Jimmy didn't think he needed to be saved. He thought all he needed was himself. But this blonde british kid just kept popping up no matter how many times Jimmy chased him away, and he was getting tired of wasting the effort. He let Curly hang around him because he knew there wasn't a point in chasing him away, and eventually he let Curly convince him to let him help. The two have been nigh inseparable ever since, and would go on to found Pony Express. But Curly's support and the company of the rest of the crew wasn't enough to make the anger festering within Jimmy go away, nor was it enough to quell his hatred and disgust for himself and his stand, and he refused to get therapy despite Curly's insistence, causing his mental health to deteriorate over time. In doing so. Horner reinforced a narrative that Checo had failed. When in truth, the team had failed him by not listening.

Checo never stopped fighting. For a moment, it seemed as though his resilience had finally paid off, with Red Bull announcing a contract initially extended to the end of 2026. Even this can now later be taken as another example of Red Bull not believing in their driver. The comeback we hoped for was ripped away by Red Bull cancelling the contract at the end of the 2024 season, leaving him not only seatless but out of the sport for the 2025 season.

Sergio Perez's journey is a case study in the power of words. How they can be misused to cause damage; how, when spoken without care, they echo far behind just a catchy news headline. I got into the sport because of Checo, and in my eyes, he's the misunderstood underdog. Something I heavily relate to. Assuming the role of Mag Launcher, who's dreamt all his life of becoming a skilled adventurer on the same path as his parents. A month after his parents mysteriously disappear during an adventure, a lone girl appears at the doorstep of the Launcher home. Carrying along with a cryptic note from Mag's father, the message reads: "You must protect this girl, Linear, until I return..." From this point forward, Mag and Linear have tagged along together in search of rare treasures throughout the ruins of the Pannaman continent.

Right, so the story isn't exactly moving, but again, it's the execution in which this game presents itself that is exceptionally entertaining for anyone looking for a varied aspect from the typical RPG. For starters, all of the characters are splendidly portrayed with crisp, bright textures. There is a significant degree of animation that can be seen in abundance during battle sequences. In addition to a variety of voice samples that initiate when characters unleash critical hits, spells, or inflict damage, giving Mag and the supporting characters some added appeal, to the point that it gave the impression I was playing an interactive anime. The combat system is built on a command input-style setup...which allows for more strategy features that users would be familiar with. As a result, Evolution has created a unique approach to the overused system depicted in many RPGs (select character, select opponent, attack...select spell, select opponent, attack; been there, done that).

The factor that will most likely divert many gamers' attention from Evolution is the nature of 'exploring'. Each ruin requires you to climb (or descend) through a monster-filled dungeon. Although the degree of monsters, traps, and additional elements within the dungeons is randomized, it's an aspect that may dishearten those used to 'random encounters' and the wider environment as seen in titles such as Lunar or the acclaimed Final Fantasy series. Looking past this particular aspect, the randomizing feature warrants a unique experience each time the game is played.

At this point, I've reached a climax in the game's story, which denotes that I am halfway through the game. Warning to those looking to spend tons of hours on this one, the game is relatively short, and I am sure the upcoming sequel is not only much longer, but also more challenging in presentation and overall playability. Save for the full comprehensive review, Evolution is a game that upholds enthusiasm, passion, and individualism, elements sadly lacking in RPGs looking to follow the norm. It's for this reason alone that I fondly embraced Evolution for its endeavor to be different and extend beyond the technical and aesthetic of the typical titles of today.

The Arisen Amaury made pawn Lane to resemble their brother who had passed away prematurely due to a sickness. For a while the pretending came easy but with time Amaury understood that the pawn couldn't fill the role a human sibling could.

Lane did a great job following the Arisen's orders even when they seemed ridiculous by human standards. Amaury was rarely seen with the pawn by their side for they opted to send the pawn out on errands alone. This Arisen was entirely selfish and uninterested in slaying their dragon but believed people would come after them for it. Eventually this paranoia extended towards their Pawn despite the fact that pawns are technically neutral and unable to betray their masters.

A role model was a role model. With flaws and all. The Arisen had left a significant emotional imprint on the pawn, and it spread as time went on. The bestowal of the spirit had begun it's course. As Lane took upon more and more of Amaury's traits, he also inherited the same paranoia and fear that the Arisen had.

Lane became unpredictable at times. This eventually led to a lethal outcome for the Arisen. Amaury's pawn acted out of fear and self-preservation and took the life of his own master.

After this incident the pawn still follows the orders his master had given him, to protect Amaury in every sense. Amaury's identity and fate is unknown to the world. Even as the bile rises in his throat the more Lane starts to understand the abuse he'd put up with.

Lane avoided returning to the rift and took to the streets to look for work instead. But with fear getting in the way he ended up fleeing from a number of Arisen who attempted to enlist him as a support pawn. He wanted to be useful but he couldn't help himself. He was not like a pawn but definitely not human either. He could think for himself somewhat but it was easier not to. It felt wrong. Confusing.

"What kind of demons have you slain to have yourself covered in grime like that?" were the first words he'd heard from his new master, Rau. For some reason this Arisen wanted him as their main sidekick. Rau didn't want to create a pawn of his own in case of bias. Lane accepted the offer and was back on the road. Not alone this time.

The second Arisen was the polar opposite of what Amaury was. Lane felt a sense of gratefulness for every bit of kindness and trust the new master showed him. Rau would make sure the pawn was comfortable, and would quip at anyone pointing out how unfit for anything Lane was as a pawn. HE'S JUST A LITTLE MAN WITH TOOTHPICKS FOR KNIVES, GIVE HIM A BREAK. And it seemed silly. Pawns don't care about such things, do they. They're just there to do their work. Lane was too, right? He thought he was. He thought. Should he be thinking? Questioning motives?

Unlike Lane's original master, Rau was very driven to right the wrongs and was aiming for the dragon who took his heart. Out of fear and greed Lane became a nuisance and did what he could to stall the Arisen's progress. It was what he was made for - to protect the arisen. But on some deeper level he suspected it was his own selfishness that he'd taken from Amaury. He didn't want this one to die in a difficult battle, and he didn't want to go back to being nothing himself.

And even though his wrinkles of toxicity are being smoothed out the more the Arisen works with him, Lane is definitely feeling threatened by other pawns aksdghka being a support pawn in Rau's setup is suffering. Pawn on pawn violence imminent.

I think in the end, there will be an end for one of them. The Arisen will fail to slay the dragon. And Lane will go back to being just another pawn in the streets. Maybe with a designated spot this time. Rau's favorite place maybe. He'd cope, seethe, mald and continue to emotionally struggle with the traumatic experience.

INTERVIEW: Sarah Goldstone On Touring With Boygenius, Books, and Boston Octobers

[…] Since her graduation from Boston University in 2009, Goldstone really has gone everywhere. Her talents on the keyboard, violin, and vocals have taken her across the globe in the past two years, touring internationally with indie artist Lucy Dacus, and now Boygenius—the indie rock supergroup composed of Dacus, Julien Baker, and Phoebe Bridgers.

Sitting in an East Boston café on June 18, just hours before performing with Boygenius at the Stage at Suffolk Downs, Goldstone describes how it felt finding out that she would be joining Boygenius on their tour while she was in Dacus’ band.

“Oh, I was really pumped,” she says. “Lucy had said that she wanted to have me there. Her manager called me and we chatted about it. It was exciting. I just love them as a group and separately.

“Boygenius: The Tour” began its United States run in early June and will be extending overseas to Europe in mid-August. Several of the tour dates, including the Boston show, are a part of the Re:SET Concert Series, featuring supporting acts like Bartees Strange, Dijon, and Clairo, with Boygenius as a headliner.

Although the tour didn’t begin until the summer of 2023, Boygenius’ first full-length studio album, titled “The Record,” was in the works much earlier. Goldstone recalls being told about the album at least a year before its March 2023 release—a powerful secret to have been keeping, given the album’s critical acclaim. “There was definitely a, you know, ‘Don’t put this on the internet’ kind of thing,” she says.

Goldstone’s first time hearing “The Record” took place at a listening party with Dacus’ touring crew in a Northern California AirBnB. With the knowledge that she would be touring with Boygenius, Goldstone approached her first listen to “The Record” from a largely practical angle.

“When you take a record that was recorded with all these different instruments, and you’re trying to squash it down to, ‘Okay, what’s a setup where I can do all of that?,’ there’s a lot of different ways you can do it,” she says. “So when I was listening through, that’s where my brain was going.”

Goldstone’s primary focus while listening was the keyboard. There is more to the instrument than meets the typical listener’s ear, she explains. “I feel like a lot of times people don’t know what keyboard’s role does because people know what piano sounds like, but maybe not the other stuff,” she says. “But there’s a lot of synth parts, there’s organ, there’s something called a Mellotron…all those weird sounds where people that come to hear it are like, ‘I don’t know what that is.’”

“My first reaction was really technical, but then I started listening for real and, you know, some of the songs make me cry as soon as I hear them,” says Goldstone of the 12 tracks that make up “The Record.” “Some of them are so funny, and, like, mean, and you know, that’s fun, too. But it took a minute for me to experience it that way,” she says.

As Goldstone began touring with Boygenius, a few tracks emerged as her favorites to perform live. “I love ‘Not Strong Enough.’ I mean, that’s like, ‘the one,’ right?” she says. “I love ‘Letter To An Old Poet’— not just because it’s the piano song! One way in which the group has grown closer, says Goldstone, is through books. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given her philosophy major during her BU days, Goldstone says she always finds time to read while on tour, and exchanges titles with the other band members as well. “We’re all trading books,” says Goldstone.

“So, yeah, there’s some exchange,” says Goldstone. “Lucy and I will exchange books a lot. See, as I think I mentioned on Friday, I got asked to put together a Standard Operating Procedure document describing SOP for the typing, and put it together in Word with some screenshots demonstrating what I'm talking about in each bullet point. Thing is, my work laptop doesn't have Word because no one's going to pay for the license for something I hardly ever use. So I agreed to put the damn thing together on my home PC. Because OpenOffice. Thing is, while I emailed myself the screenshots, I forgot to email myself the text. So I quickly logged into my work laptop yesterday just to send that over to myself.

Thing is ... Scruffman had sent me another email earlier in the day. This one asking me to do some fiddly bullshit involving finding lab numbers for various reports (which ... got lost in the system ... somehow?) and putting them together with the other details in a list from oldest to newest. Apparently this is for costings or something. Now, that presented a whole bunch of problems. Like, they still haven't got around to getting me a USB monitor so I still use the dinky laptop screen, and it doesn't support the kind of split-screen I'd need to make that kind of task anything but the most inefficient bunch of bullshit. Also, if I wanted to do this, it'd have to be in Excel, and my work laptop doesn't run Excel. It doesn't run anything on the Windows suite, because no one wants to pay a license for something I only use maybe once or twice a year. So I ignored it, since I wasn't technically "at work", and instead just spent fifteen minutes on the SOP document (figuring I could take it as time off in lieu at some stage in the week) and tried to forget about the bullshit that was going to face me this morning.

So I replied to that email with the attached SOP document, saying, "Yeah, I actually did that already - I figure I can take the 15 minutes I spent on it as extra time when we're not so busy. On the subject, though, does this extended deadline apply to the costings document list you wanted? Because that one's going to take awhile for me to put together, given my small monitor and having to manually arrange the list from oldest to most recent because of a lack of Excel on this computer."

I never said I couldn't do it. I never said I didn't want to do it. I simply asked for clarification on the timeframe owing to the circumstances, and laid out all of the circumstances. Politely.

His response? "Thanks for the SOP document. Don't worry about the other thing; I'll work out something else".

So I got out of at least one bit of fiddly bullshit that I am not actually equipped to do, all on account of my quick thinking. I am proud of me.

I do have to wonder why it is that Scruffman always asks me to do this stuff. I'm limited by the work-from-home setup they gave me, and I don't even do as many hours as most of the rest of the staff. I mean, if it's that I'm the only one he trusts to do it right and in a timely manner? I want to hear that shit! I would actually be very grateful to know my worth! And honestly, if it's just because I'm the only one that doesn't bitch, moan, whine, or sigh too loud when he gives me this kind of work? I want to hear that too! I want him to admit to my face that he bombards me with stuff I struggle to do with the limitations of my setup because he's so afraid of confrontation that he doesn't want to ask anyone who might moan even a little where he has to hear it.

Anyway, never mind; at least I don't have to do spend at least an hour digging through our electronic patient record by various bits of information and look at all their records to find the ones they're after.
