I keep seeing takes indicating T/G would have been living together for 2 years prior to their marriage. This has always bugged me because it would have been a social suicide at the time, a respectable women living with her lover? No way they would have risked it as Tommy was trying to climb the social ladder plus he would not have risked tarnishing Graces reputation? Her family would have disowned her and no one would have turned up for the wedding. Grace was fronting the "single mother and a grieving widow" until it was socially appropriate to remarry? Tommy also looked to set everything up for them to start living together - his trip to NY to bring her and baby back, the wedding, the new house - it just seem to fit that they would have stayed in touch but would have only got together maybe a few months prior to the confirmed wedding.

This was my take watching the show or maybe I'm missing something here. I remembered you addressed this vaguely in one of your fic. I know you do tons of research and I would love to hear your thoughts/facts on this subject :)

I had it in my head that Tommy didn’t see Charlie until Charlie was 6 months old, which was a 15 month duration from conception to Tommy going to New York to collect Grace and Charlie.  This would mean he and Grace only really had, let’s say 1 month pre-wedding honeymoon in New York together, and 6-ish months in Arrow House together prior to the marriage.  (6 months is long enough to float a new charitable institution...)

But, this time gap for me was motivated more by headcanon/thematic desire rather than well researched. I mean, thematically, I just *really liked* the idea that Tommy never saw any of his women pregnant with his children or their early lives (Zelda (Duke-17y), Grace (Charlie-6m), Lizzie (Ruby-3m)). 

There were a few other factors which might lead to the lag between conception and Charlie being 6 months old, but these are more floater thoughts or first perceptions than anything I've double/triple checked:

The biggest one: I assumed Grace went back to America with Clive the morning after Derby Day, because Tommy didn't get back to her in time.  Because she was probably a *minimum* of 6 weeks pregnant at that point, possibly 8 (had to miss two periods minimum; no pregnancy tests back then and cervix takes 6 weeks before it looks different to a gyno), she told Clive the baby was his on the steamer to protect herself on the assumption Tommy didn't want to proceed with her. (If this doesn't happen, and Tommy manages to catch her before she leaves, it's possible she could have physically left Clive then and lived the full two years or so with Tommy and just weathered the scandal.)

The simplest possible divorce (Grace accepts fault for committing infidelity) would be 6 months, however I assumed with an investment banker for a husband, that divorce would be very complicated, so let’s say an 18 month process.

Once Clive died, with no word of divorce mentioned, an uncomplicated estate settlement can also be around 9 to 18 months. (if Clive committed suicide on his own in America without a divorce processed, and Grace was in England, she would have had to travel back to America for settlement)

Back in the day, pregnancy was still fairly high risk, and medical advice cautioned against extensive travel during pregnancy, especially in the later stages, due to the potential discomfort, risks associated with the journey, and limited medical facilities on board steamers.  Given my assumption she went back to America, Grace was probably four months pregnant by the time she and Tommy agreed (via remote correspondence! every letter taking 10 days! phone calls with terrible lag and disconnections!) they would get married and worked out a disentanglement strategy with Clive, they decided to wait until the baby was born before starting any of these proceedings.

The risk of travelling with a newborn was similar, and recommendations in the day suggested waiting until they were older to deal with all the foreign bugs. So whatever kept Grace in America until Charlie was born, meant she had to stay until he was older anyway.

In terms of what did keep Grace in America until Charlie was born, rather than simply getting on the next steamer back to England at 4 months pregnant and dealing with all divorce etc remotely, I headcanon that:

Grace’s strategy was to wait until Charlie was three months old (so she could be fully supported in America) then admit the infidelity and process the divorce

Tommy agreed with her at face value, then promptly executed his own secret strategy, which was to find dirt on Clive and blackmail him into saying he committed the infidelity, and Tommy tried to push this as fast as he could; the quicker the divorce was processed the better, and as far as he was concerned, Grace could get on that ship at whatever point and he’d throw a bunch of doctors on with her if needed to get her there

Whatever Tommy found, whether he tabled it with Clive, whether Grace got emotional and told Clive everything, whatever it was: Clive committed suicide before Charlie was born.  This threw a spanner in Tommy’s ASAP-timeline because Grace then had additional reasons to wait in New York (until Clive’s estate settlement was dealt with, as well as Charlie being old enough to travel safely). In the meantime she was able to be supported by Clive’s money as a widow.  My irony headcanon: inadvertently, this pre-birth/pre-divorce suicide also left her with Clive’s fortune, and after her death, left Tommy with her fortune *gasp*.  For me this fortune-transfer headcanon is also thematically relevant – that whole “everyone Tommy touches” curse, but even as people die around him, all the time his net worth and assets increase. 

So yes – mostly headcanon and themes rather than anything concrete! I don’t think fear of scandal would have bothered Grace all that much. BUT, given how supportive her family actually were – they only picked on Tommy’s corrupt reputation with mild concern -- I can assume there was no hint of pre-marital infidelity or divorce.  Tommy was a dubious match, but there was no suggestion he and Grace committed infidelity, and no one seemed to blink twice about Charlie so would assume the family thought he was Clive’s and Tommy adopted him.  I also had the undercurrent Grace's family thought Tommy was marrying Grace (as another man’s widow/seconds, and taking on another man’s child) to socially advance himself, and they could reluctantly understand that coming from a man like him; they were satisfied enough with the match because he had his military record, he was firmly new money by then, and Grace was, after all, widowed and had a child, had no parents or sibs to support her (they were all uncles and cousins), was very happy with Tommy, and would have been difficult to convince to a different pathway/marry off again. So they acquiesed.

(On scandal -- Grace's whole profession seemed scandalous for a woman (?) -- I just don't think she would've cared all that much about a reputation for infidelity given she was basically prepared to sleep with men (Campbell's orders) as a spy. Society/family might have different opinions but I just didn't see it too much as Grace's motivational concern. In my head, Tommy was probably more concerned about that reputation landing on Grace (hence his scheme to have Clive take the fall) than she was.)

You nod and grab two different packets from your bag. “Butter or kettle? I couldn’t decide.”

It’s always been odd seeing him in public after the two of you broke up, but every time you have seen him, you’ve been able to hide yourself immediately. Thankfully Sero was there when you were discovered and you recovered from your mental paralysis as soon as he swung the two of you out and away from him.

Sero has really been a special kind of hero towards you since your breakup. He’s been nothing but supportive of you— there for you whether you needed a shoulder to cry on or someone to bring a smile to your face. Sero is your guy. Sometimes both! You recall an instance where you were done crying but had said something along the lines of “my heart might be broken,” and without hesitating, Sero clicked out a piece of his tape and placed it over your chest, telling you that he’d be there to fix it. That’s when you first realized that maybe your heart could change fall into a new direction. He has really become something very… special to you. You find your heart skipping a beat during certain instances. If his hand lingers on your waist for a second longer than you’re used to, your mind goes haywire. It’s funny— you know you have feelings for him, and you’re pretty positive he might reciprocate those feelings, but the two of you avoid saying anything about it like the plague. You’re completely comfortable with him, but sometimes when you’re alone, when you’re close, the air grows thick with tension and the two of you sit in silence until one of you inevitable break the silence by making some lame joke. But god, sometimes you just want to hold the boy down and smooch his face!!

You pause in the hallway to check yourself in the mirror, pursing your lips as you turn to inspect your teal blue pajama bottoms. You sigh, embarrassed to have been in public with your lounge wear: slippers and all. If you had been expecting to see anybody, you would’ve done your makeup, maybe put on a skirt and some cute boots, but he saw you looking like a slob with a shit ton of candy in your hands.

After you pop your corn, you return to Sero’s living room, amazed at how quickly he made the fort transformation. Blankets hang from the walls and ceiling, cascading down with nice curves centering on an arena of fluffy pillows with Sero sprawled out in the middle, languidly pushing chocolate covered cookie dough into his mouth while he bats at the controls to get the movie started. You pause at the doorway, shifting your weight from one leg to another nervously until he looks at you, lifting a brow when you bite your lip.

“I know,” he says with a grin, “I’m absolutely brilliant.”

“You’re just alright.” You take you seat next to the boy, and burrow your cold feet under his legs. He gives you a funny grin, but you shrug it off. “I’m cold!”

“I think I-“ Sero presses his lips together, a worried look crawling over his face “-I’m certain I spared a blanket or two for us to actually use.”

He takes a moment to look around and after he finds nothing, he gives you a wide eyed stare. “Oh no.”

“See, this is why you're just alright.”

Sero hops up. “No, no, no— I’m not just alright. I’m the king of this here fort.” Sero raises his hands to feel around for a blanket used for the roof that’s unnecessary for the structure. “Do forts usually have kings?”

“Then one could say that the princess owes the king a lot for saving her life…”

SAU Taller d'Arquitectura opens up narrow interior during Spanish home renovation

A double-height living area crossed by a small wooden bridge sits at the centre of this home in Girona, Spain, renovated and extended by SAU Taller d'Arquitectura.

The Sant Daniel House is just 3.5 metres wide and sandwiched between party walls, so the Barcelona-based practice wanted to open up its interior as much as possible. The aim was to create continuous views along its 12.5-metre length and making the circulation areas "almost disappear".

A central axis on both floors cuts lengthways through the two-storey home, aligning the entrance with a door out to a long garden at the rear.

"Emptying the initial volume...permits new visuals between areas, providing natural light to all the rooms and guaranteeing a good climatic behaviour and cross-ventilation," said the studio.

A log burner was placed in the double-height living space

On the ground floor, the entrance leads through a study area into a large, double-height living area, with simple finishes including a log burner with an exposed flue.

Continuing along this central route, the staircase is tucked alongside a bathroom to one side of the home, hiding it from view on the main longitudinal axis.

The kitchen was fitted with green tiles and wooden surfaces

At the back of the home is a kitchen-dining space, where a simple run of countertops with a green tile splash back sit opposite a large central table, alongside doors leading out to the garden.

The rear elevation has been finished with pale green render, with iron gates over the openings allowing for the building's cross-ventilation strategy while still providing security.

On the first floor, the main bedroom and bathroom block sits at the rear of the home while the children's bedroom is towards the front. This is accessed via a wooden walkway that crosses above the living room.

Mirroring the alignment of the doors along the building's ground floor axis, the long upstairs corridor frames square windows at either end, with the rear bedroom also opening onto a small balcony.

A ladders leads to a small extension under the roof

Opposite the main stair on the first floor, a set of ladder-style steps lead up to a small extension tucked under the exposed wood of the roof.

Pine and fir timber fittings and window frames along with white walls create a simple material palette, punctuated by areas of green and yellow. Skylights help to draw additional light into the long, narrow space.

"The result is raw architecture, neutral and well-suited for the place, letting the user, the objects and the time give their own character," said the studio.

In 2015, SAU Taller d'Arquitectura completed a house in Spain with a triple-layered sliding facade to allow for varying degrees of light and privacy.

Back to the Lab: Essential Teambuilding Tools

Howzit! It’s the human Volcanion himself, Aero, and we’re back in the lab again to deliver some heat. Yes, I’ll be dropping some knowledge bombs as I continue my ongoing discussion about competitive team building. This time we’re going to be taking a look at the visual resources competitive players have used when brainstorming, particularly check lists, compendiums, and coverage charts. Along with the metagame knowledge you bring to the table, these resources are simple ways to cross your I’s and dots your T’s, and makes the whole process of putting your team together a lot smoother. Let’s start with the coverage charts

Charts for Maximum Coverage 

  This is a helpful tool for visually representing what types your team is vulnerable too, and what types they’re strong against offensively. This becomes especially valuable with the knowledge of the tier you’re playing in, and naturally following the series I’ve been doing we’ll continue with an example in OU. Let’s take a quick look at this rain team via the chart.

I use the website Pokemon Team Builder, but you can use whichever one you prefer, provided it is updated to Sun/Moon and has access to type weaknesses, resistance, and coverage. Generally speaking, I make sure to have a 1 to 1 ratio of weaknesses to a resistances. So if I have at least one fairy weakness on, say, Kingdra, I expect a Pokemon like Magearna to compensate for that vulnerability.

  Type coverage will show you what your team deals super effective damage to based on the moves you filled in. In my case, although we don’t have any coverage for bug types, that isn’t a huge concern since there are a grand total of 4 bug types in the tier, and they all don’t appreciate taking stealth rock damage. This is a great compliment to the team building process, but should be used best in combination with what you already know about the tier, and what a type chart can’t tell you.

  Competitive Compendium to Compete with the Competitors

  To be completely honest, this is a resource that has really already been fleshed out for us eager theorycrafters. The compendiums provided by Smogon’s subforums host a plethora of helpful information, from OU’s speed tiers to check-and-counter resources. To take merely one example, let’s say you’re making a team that has a nice balanced core to it, but your lack of damage output means you’re struggling against stall teams, especially with Mega-Sableye on them. Perusing the stallbreakers available in OU, courtesy of the Role Compendium, we can see plenty of options:

  Since Mega-Sableye’s magic bounce ability deflects taunt, a more set-up based sweeper like Zygarde can be especially good here. Blocking status with Substitute and setting up a Coil or Dragon Dance can easily tear through most of what stall brings to the table. What ingredients are missing for you may differ,  so I encourage you to search through the role compendium to get a firmer grasp on how best to spice up your squad.

  Make a List and Checking it Twice 

  Arguably the most essential tool, checklists are a way to prepare your future concoctions based on all the metagame knowledge you’ve accumulated in your testing. It’s a way to centralize what you’ve learned from playing with previous teams, distilling it into a reminder of what you should be aware of with every team you make going forward. Let’s take a look at one I made.

Now I want to emphasize this list is far from complete (In fact I’ll drop a link to a much more extensive list too). But a list such as this is a very simple way to recall all of the major threats/common strategies in the tier, possibly including common ways to stop said threats as well. Coupled with the type charts and compendium resources I’ve shown you earlier, in combination this is a surefire way to double and triple check your teams, really allowing you to feel prepared before you ever bring your team into its first battle. Checklists tend to be very fluid, so what is prevalent and what is still considered a threat can vary with progression. But getting into the routine of making one can be a great way to test your knowledge of not only team building but the tier you’re working within.

  Hopefully you guys have appreciated this more visually oriented article, as I’ve wanted to make a general catchall source for a lot of the helpful projects many Pokemon faithful have worked on to make this whole competitive endeavor a lot more streamlined. I also want to give a special recognition to a discord user by the name of LL, who created the original OU checklist and flowchart that inspired this idea, as well as council member p2, who is largely in charge of the compendiums you see on the subforum. Trump Reports Income Of $594 Million, Net Worth Of At Least $1.1 Billion

Late on Friday, the U.S. Office of Government Ethics released a 98-page financial disclosure form according to which President Trump reported income of at least $ 594 million for the period from 2016 and through April 2017 and assets worth at least $ 1.4 billion; he also had personal liabilities of at least $ 315.6 million to German, U.S. and other lenders as of mid-2017 implying a net worth of just over $ 1.1 billion. The disclosure form was Trump’s first since taking office.

“President Trump welcomed the opportunity to voluntarily file his personal financial disclosure form,” the White House said in a statement, adding that the form was “certified by the Office of Government Ethics pursuant to its normal procedures.”

On the income side, the largest component was $ 115.9 million listed as golf-resort related revenues from Trump National Doral in Miami, down from $ 132 million a year ago. Income from his other hotels and resorts largely held steady according to Reuters. Revenue from Trump Corporation, his real-estate management company, nearly tripled, to $ 18 million, and revenue from Mar-a-Lago grew by 25%, to $ 37.25 million helped perhaps by the doulbing of the club’s initiation fee to $ 200,000 after Trump’s election.

While royalties for his book “Art of the Deal” at least doubled, revenues for condo sales in his properties decreased. At Trump Park Avenue, for example, condo sales in 2015 totaled $ 44.3 million. Last year, those sales only reached $ 29.9 million, a 33% drop.

Trump had roughly $ 20 million in income from his new marquee Washington hotel, which opened just down the street from the White House last September. The president also earned $ 11 million from the Miss Universe pageant, after selling the beauty contest back in 2015, while revenue from television shows like “The Apprentice” tumbled to $ 1.1 million, down from $ 6 million a year earlier.

The disclosure reflects income of between $ 2.5 million and $ 15.5 million from stocks, bonds and mutual funds. Trump sold all of his stocks in June 2016, a spokesman said in December.

In 2015, Trump’s airline — Tag Air — which leases a 757 from one of his businesses, earned $ 3.7 million in revenue. The next year, it reported earning $ 7.7 million in revenue and travel reimbursements. Trump used Tag Air to travel during the campaign, according to The Hill. The president also disclosed $ 10.8 million from two entities affiliated with the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, which he co-owns with entrepreneur Phil Ruffin. The figures, described as development fees and a sponsor fee, are attributed to companies for which the previous disclosures show no income. There has been an uptick in hotel condo purchases at the tower by limited liability corporations during the past year, where Trump and Ruffin still own more than 300 units.

On the liability side, Trump reported debt of at least $ 130 million to Deutsche Bank Trust Company Americas, a unit of German-based Deutsche Bank AG. Of this, Trump disclosed a liability to Deutsche exceeding $ 50 million for the Old Post Office, a historic Washington property where he has opened a hotel. Trump also reported liabilities of at least $ 110 million to Ladder Capital Corp , a commercial real estate lender with offices in New York, Los Angeles and Boca Raton, Florida. In total, Trump has five liabilities worth $ 50 million or more, such as the lease on his Washington D.C. hotel.

His assets were reported to exceed $ 1.4 billion because the disclosure form provided ranges of values. Last May, Trump released a disclosure form that his campaign at the time said showed his net worth was $ 10 billion, a number many said was overblown. Trump also disclosed three checking and savings accounts holding a total of at least $ 57 million.

Furthermore, The document showed Trump held officer positions in 565 corporations or other entities before becoming U.S. president. His tenure in most of those posts ended on Jan. 19, the day before his inauguration, and in others in 2015 and 2016. According to a Reuters breakdown, most of the entities involved were based in the United States, with a handful in Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Brazil, Bermuda and elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Trump has refused to release his tax returns, which would give a much clearer indication of his wealth and business interests; they would likely also indicate his extensive use of NOLs to minimize his tax liability. Trump has, however, submitted federal forms disclosing the ranges of his and his family’s income, assets and liabilities.
