Hi, Fannibals!! Everyone who saw me at @fannibalfest-toronto probably also saw me with my camera. That said, here’s a gdocs folder of all the photographs I took while I was at the con, primarily from the bus tours. Please feel free to spread it around!! Some locations from the tours include:
Thursday:
The Cliff House from TWoTL
Will’s House
The Tree of the Beloved
Exterior of the Observatory (where Bev was displayed)
Monday:
The Moter Inn from Aperitif
Exterior of the Parkwood (Verger) Estate
The road with the police van scene from TWoTL
MindWarp FX Studio’s props from the show (CW: BLOOD & GORE)
And also general group photos where applicable, random photos of whatever the heck I saw, as well as some assorted snaps from panels, including pics of Janice Poon, Annabelle De Vetten, Team Sassy Science: Hettienne Park, Aaron Abrams, & Scott Thompson, etc.
Thank you all for a wonderful weekend. I could absolutely not have hoped for better. I met so many people I knew online, and made so many new friends!! It was an incredible experience and I hope to see everyone again next year (hopefully with a smaller camera that I can bring to more panels... I volunteer as tribute to do whatever y’all need to make it a great time)!! 💖

Claims have been made that some fannibals were comped tickets to FannibalFest. People on certain panels like @docnickie (who was definitely on the fan fiction panel) interesting.

Maneater: Hunger (yeah, that crazy girl with the Jaws AU is back)
Hi everyone! As some of you may have noticed, I dropped off the face of the planet for a few months last year. I
First, I want to thank everyone who stood by me during a particularly trying time and literally everyone at @fannibalfest-toronto. It was only in October that I made peace with the clusterfuck formerly known as 2018 and began writing again. So of course, where else does one begin than with the multi-chapter monster that is my pride and joy??? That’s right….IT’S STILL NOT SAFE TO GO INTO THE WATER!
This sequel fic is a gift for @thenecronon who won last year’s *hides in shame* @freshmeatfriday contest. I’m so sorry it took so long to complete, but I hope you enjoy it! (@pka42 your Reba fic is next!)
Tumblr media
Summary:
After wrapping up their latest case, Hannibal and Will are stranded in Atlanta on their way home to Baltimore. To kill time, the two men take a trip to the Georgia Aquarium. This is a sequel to my Jaws AU, Maneater, and I recommended that you start there as this timestamp spoils everything. Beta’ed by @wolftrapqueen27.
Ratings: Explicit

New to the series? Read Part 1 first.

My commission for the Memory Palace theme, available to buy exclusively at @fannibalfest-toronto 2018 :D
I gave a print to Mads and he was extremely fucking brilliant about the whole thing. I wrote ‘gold pen’ on my note but they didn’t have one a the desk - why would they??? why wouldn’t I bring one?? Mads was asking round trying to sort it out when the guy next in line produced one like a magician :D (this seems significant somehow)
He welcomes you into his aura of joy like crossing into some kind of new dimension - totally focused on each person and so soft and warm and engaged - and juuuust the right amount of lingering.
thank you friends for your first-rate W.I.P. feedback: @shoegazerx  @pangaeastarseed @weconqueratdawn @thecountessolivia @zigzag-wanderer @nephila-clavipes @beatricenius @miasmatik

I’ve been doing this every year since 2015, and it’s a good way of kind of charting for myself what I’ve managed to do over the course of the previous year… although I’m a bit hard-pressed to remember exactly what it all was, tbh. So we can start with:
ongoing peri-menopause, which continues to be an unequivocal pain in the ass, and I am so. ready. to. be. done.
Professionally, I did some stuff:
attended the first Fan Scholar Salon at USC, where I talked about the politics of pleasure and how I don’t understand why AO3 can’t manage a proper warning for “slavery”
had several publications come out this year, which cumulatively suggest that I need to be a bit more original in my essay titles:
“The ‘Totoro Meme’ and the Politics of Transfandom Pleasure” (East Asian Journal of Popular Culture)
“Ontological Security and the Politics of Transcultural Fandom” (Companion to Media Fandom and Fan Studies)
“From Imagined Communities to Contact Zones: American Monoculture in Transatlantic Fandoms” (Transatlantic Television Drama: Industries, Programs and Fans)
co-edited with Louisa Stein an issue of Transformative Works and Cultures on Tumblr and Fandom (just prior to Tumblr’s fandom breakdown)
was invited (and paid!) to participate in the featured roundtable of the 2018 Flow Conference on “Praxis in Practice“
was invited (and paid!) to give a talk on Hannibal at McGill University in Montreal by Lynn Kozak, which was a completely unexpected and welcome pleasure
was a co-organizer for the – very successful, IMO – first annual Fan Studies Network North America conference
gave a paper on transcultural Yuri!!! on Ice fandom at the annual SCMS conference, which has since been turned into a paper for publication in early (I think) 2019
and last, but not least
I took a group of fellow academics to Japan for 10 days on the (first?) Japan Fan Studies Tour, which seems by all accounts to have been more successful than I’d hoped it would be. My own impetus for doing it was mainly to help give the participants a sense of Japan and Japanese popular culture enough that they might feel more confident talking about it in their classrooms, and maybe even engaging with it more in their own scholarship. If I could change one thing – and it’s pretty much just the one thing – it would be to take my own goddamned advice and wear comfortable shoes, dammit (I did not). I’ve been really thrilled to see people talking about what they got out of it, what it’s spurred them on to do, and I’m really hoping to be able to do it again, if there are enough participants.
I did a few other things for the first time this year:
traveled to an on-campus job interview in the UK, which was both entirely unique and also convinced me that not getting the job was probably best for all concerned
compiled a book index for Suzanne Scott’s upcoming book, Fake Geek Girls, which was surprisingly enjoyable to do
appeared in episodes 44 and 45 of the Aca-Media podcast
‘spoke’ with Sangita Shresthova about fan studies as part of a series on Henry Jenkins’s blog
reviewed a book manuscript for the first time
Personally, I was pretty heavily into fandom this year, which mostly meant a lot of Hannibal-related activity, including
helping to organize the second FannibalFest Toronto convention, which for me included
helping to organize fan-run panels (although I was substantially helped in this by two other fans who made it very easy work)
creating the promotional video for the con
writing/designing a couple of games as part of our fundraising activities: the second Hannibal trivia game, and “Mizumono: the Game,” which I’m still kind of tickled about and need to play with my family at some point
manning our vendor table during the con (which I weirdly enjoy, as a rule)
and having the exceedingly good fortune to be able to do a Q&A with Hannibal director Vincenzo Natali and editor Michael Doherty
I think that’s pretty much all of it. Life-wise, I’ve become more comfortable with being independent (although how much of that is seasonal is hard to say at this point), and I’ve even made a bit of money doing freelance work. The kids continue to grow, they have the appearance of being happy and (reasonably) well-adjusted (although #2 has been a bit of an asshole for about half a year now… but I think it’s more age than personality), and (knock on wood) healthy, so I can’t complain there. Except about their bedrooms, which deserve ALL the complaining. Spouse has had more than a few trials and tribulations this year, and for him more than anyone else, I’m hoping 2019 will be a good one.
Here’s some of my favorite pictures from the recent Japan trip – enjoy, and have a happy new year! 🙂
Year in Review: 2018 I've been doing this every year since 2015, and it's a good way of kind of charting for myself what I've managed to do over the course of the previous year...

HANNIBAL Stunts with Ken Quinn and Tommy Chang Panel Transcript (Fannibalfest 2018)
Last one for today! I also have notes on the Sassy Science panels that I’m planning on typing up, and I did take notes during the episode commentaries too, but there’s already a much better transcript of those online on twitter, so I think I’ll probably leave off on those.
I’ll probably come back and edit these again at some point as well, referencing some twitter posts people made during the event and such to see if I can plug any holes in my notetaking that way.
More: Hair and Makeup, Set and Food Design
DISCLAIMER: THIS WAS TYPED UP OVER 2 WEEKS AFTER THE EVENT FROM VERY SHORTHAND NOTES. NONE OF THIS WILL BE DIRECT QUOTED, NOT EVERYTHING SAID WAS INCLUDED (due to my writing speed) AND THE SENTENCES MAY BE SLIGHTLY SKEWED FROM ORIGINAL INTENTION (I am aware that some of the answers that I was able to write down do not exactly answer the questions, but I can only fill in what my notes covered).
If anyone has their own notes that fill in blanks or contradict anything that I noted, please correct me! I extrapolated a little based on the context of the questions to make my noted less caveman and more full sentences, so some of the answers may have veered off in the wrong direction. I would love to be corrected to make this as full and complete as possible!
PANEL:
Ken Quinn (K)
Tommy Chang (T)
Question from Moderator/Audience (Q)
Q: How did you get into the business?
T: I was offered a job. My role was to get shot and fall down stairs. I didn't realize you needed pads for that and did it without them. It was 1984, so all the stunt work was done really cheaply. I had to pretend I was shot and walk down a live street [with real pedestrians].
K: I wanted to be a motorcycle driver, but went into marketing instead. I coordinated stunts, including myself, and was elevated from a regular stunt man to a stunt coordinator.
Q: How has the industry changed?
K: Color film was big. It's also much safer now. The tech used is different, we have wires and green screen.
T: Fights have evolved. In the 1980s it was a lot of Karate Kid, and in the 90s you got a lot more females fighting. Then there was a period of mixed martial arts, and now what's popular is what feels "real."
Q: How did you become involved in Hannibal?
K: I was called in by the production manager. Hannibal was on a tight budget, and some stunt equipment wouldn't work in the cold. We had to keep bringing it into the tent and warm it up, then do another take. But Mads never complained.
T: I was hired by Ken, so. Why did you hire me?
K: We had worked together before. Tommy was brought in for the kitchen fight. The flip over the back was Tommy's idea. I can do all around stunts, but Tommy's a fight specialist. He's done a lot of work in fight choreography.
T: Ken is one of the most respected stunt coordinators in the world. He takes jobs no one else will.
K: I once did a stunt where I fell 14 stories off a building, on fire. It took 3 takes.
Q: What fight took the most time, and who was the best actor to work with?
K: The kitchen fight took the longest. Mads is one of the most athletic actors from his background in dance.
T: I liked working with both Mads and Lawrence. You really try to bring the script to the real world. I'd brake down the fight, block the moves, show Ken, train the doubles, showed Bryan Fuller and so on. The actors all trained really hard. Bryan Fuller called me back for the other fight because he liked my work on the kitchen scene.
K: It was funny, because Bryan would say things to me like "I want an organic knife fight." So I'd make a knife fight. And then when I showed it to Bryan, he'd say, "this looks too much like a knife fight." And I'd tell him "that's what you said!" And Bryan would just go, "okay, le'ts not do a knife fight."
Q: Jack and Hannibal have very different fight styles. Jack is a boxer. How does the physicality of the actor factor into the fights?
K: Lawrence Fishburne was just back from a hernia surgery, so that factored in. Both actors had their own ideas about the scene. They would change the styles to fit their character. Slamming the fridge door was Lawrence's idea.
T: I'd bring in a template, and the actors would take the choreography and fit it into their characters.
K: Both actors are gifted and trained. We were lucky. They knew the right fighting distance. Lawrence Fishburne is like a bear of a man, very strong.
T: Both are in good shape. Other shows might take 3-5 months of training to deliver 1-2 good fight scenes, but the kitchen fight for Hannibal was done in 5 rehearsals. 3 with stunt doubles, 2 with the actors.
K: Tommy can put a fight together in minutes, but it took a lot to please Bryan Fuller and the network and everyone else.
Q: Does Hannibal have special abilities, or is he fully human?
K: Just his intelligence. Bryan Fuller was very involved in character development.
Q: Did Mads' background [as a dancer] come into play in the Tobias fight? The choreography looks like a dance.
T: I wasn't involved in that scene.
K: The issue with that scene was that there was a lot of distance to cover in the office. Bryan Fuller really wanted the ladder involved, but the ladder didn't originally move, so we had to edit the ladder to move. But Mads knows how to cover space. Demore was not so good at moving.
Q: What qualifies as a stunt?
K: A stunt is any physical action. For insurance purposes, it's required to hire a stunt coordinator to supervise a stunt. This could be for anything from grabbing, tripping, anything physical. Even those little stunts use spine protectors and pads to keep the actors from getting majorly hurt. The police can get involved in stunt accidents. Lots of actors don't want to do stunts. With Mads, it was the opposite. He wanted to do all the stunts. We had to tone down some of the stunts to make sure he wouldn't get hurt.
Q: Demore said he swung the piano wire into his crotch. Were there any stunt accidents or bloopers?
T: Mads wanted to spin kick Mason in the pig barn scene. That took 15 takes, and he'd hit the stunt man at the same place each time. The stunt guy actually really hurt in the stomach, but to tease him, I kept telling Mads to kick him harder to make it look better.
K: Fights take so long, I think car chases are much more fun. Fights require much closer choreography and more safety measures.
Q: For the cliff fall, how did they not hurt each other while falling intertwined like that onto a pad?
K: Luck. Things like that are often messed up. It's easier to keep them in position with wires.
Q: In the Tobias fight, we heard that the piano wire kept breaking. How did that impact the scene?
K: The prop department built that. It was constantly being repaired on set, they had no replacement for it. There was a time restraint, so it wasn't built properly.
Q: Was there an actor you wanted to work with but couldn't?
T: I wish the show wasn't cancelled. The actors were all great to work with. We could have done so much. I had a lot of ideas, because I had to keep topping my own work.
K: Bryan Fuller asked me what I wanted to do, and I said a car chase. I wanted to see more action in Hannibal. We could have had more and different action than on other shows.
Q: As a stunt coordinator, is there any stunt or fight you just wouldn't do because of the danger level?
T: Air ram.
K: An air ram is a piece of equipment that launches people like from a bomb explosion.
T: I did a scene where I was hit with a dragonball z type strike, and landed wrong. That was the worst experience. People didn't know the danger of these things and would just build them in their garages.
K: One scene, Mads was on the bucket? The bucket was built to be stable, but Mads said it wouldn't be realistic, he wanted it to be unstable. Then he wanted to look like he was straining on the rope. He was on that bucket for 12-14 hours that day, and it was really cold in the studio. He got sick. And his neck was raw from the pressure of the cable for days.
Q: Anything you remember from the small, intimate fight scenes?
K: Honestly, I forget a lot. It's been a while since I worked on Hannibal. I remember the window scene, with Abigail and Alana. We were really far behind then, and had to build part of the house. The director wanted sparkles in the shot, but Bryan didn't like that, so we had to remove the sparkles in a reshoot. We had a stunt girl for Alana. The window was scored so it would break. We usually used tempered or breakaway glass for scenes like that. We did 2-3 takes. Also, the hand under the bed scene was a disaster. When they built the bed for that scene, they forgot that someone had to fit under the bed. Because the set wasn't built right, we had to saw the wall out.

FannibalFest 2017 Recap 3/3
Tour #2- Pic Heavy!
I wasn’t sure  @fannibalfest-toronto  could live up to how awesome their first tour was, with Will’s house and the TWOTL house (see it in my previous tour post), especially considering I live in downtown Toronto, but this tour was AMAZING!!!! :D So many great sites to be seen and the fannibal vibe was super fun :)
Tumblr media
First stop was the barn where Hannibal kept Miriam Lass (or at least where he put her for Jack to find).  Even though we couldn’t get inside, it felt super cool and creepy. This is one of the oldest barns in Ontario apparently, which (as a local) I thought was really cool!
Tumblr media
Next up was the BHSCI and the Observatory!  They happen to be REALLY close together...like, turn to the left from this pic and the telescope is right there ;P It’s the David Dunlop Observatory which, although it isn’t open anymore, it’s been given heritage status to protect it from developers ( a big problem around Toronto).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hehe, the funniest thing about the two locations being so close to each other is imagining how far Will really needed to be taken to go see Bev’s body...seems like a lot of bondage effort when they could just walk him over there (Not that I blame them) ;P
Tumblr media
AAAAAAAND We arrive at Hannibal’s office!  I pass by hear all the time, but I have to say how amazing it was to experience it with a group of other Fannibals! I loved being able to squee with them and speculate how his office could be laid out inside :)
Lots more pics after the cut!
Tumblr media
The front :)
Tumblr media
Bonus pic from my archives so you can see it at night :)
Tumblr media
Bonsoir! A Toronto hotel that doubled as a Paris Hotel that a leather clad Hannibal on a motorcycle pulled up in front of.
Tumblr media
At Roy Thompson Hall... site of Tobias’s cello tableaux and the infamous Garret Jacob Hobbs slow clap.  We recreated it to tweet at Vlad, and he retweeted it with happy comments :) Sorry for so few pics, we couldn’t take them of the stage.
Tumblr media
The fountain that eventually caught burning Chilton... poor bastard #ChiltonDiesHard.
Tumblr media
HANNIBAL’S HOUSE! Again, another one I go by fairly often, but so nice to flail around with fellow Fannibals!
Tumblr media
Honey, we’re home! :)
Tumblr media
Although the lighting is much different, Hannibal and Matthew Brown were here in some very tiny bathing suits! I can imagine Hannibal demanding the mood lighting or he wouldn’t swim there ;)
Tumblr media
On to another Toronto landmark used as the Verger Estate...Casa Loma!  These are the stables if you can believe it.
Tumblr media
The birthplace of Marlana!!! <33333
Tumblr media
Perhaps Mason just got finished wheeling Hannibal and Will upstairs!
Tumblr media
The carriage house in the stables were where the pigs were in the show, and where Hannibal covered Will in his bodily fluids in will’s mind ;P (I told you I was a trash fire)
Tumblr media
The conservatory ballroom where Hannibal and Bedelia danced in Italy! Also in Casa Loma. I wish Hannidoll could have dipped us all :P
Tumblr media
Can you believe these chandeliers?! Antlers everywhere!
Tumblr media
Bonus pics I took before the tour...the ballroom in the Royal York hotel is where Hannibal worked in Italy (and where Jack kicked his ass a second time)
Tumblr media
And one more...Knox College is where Will displayed Randal Tyre’s body.  Although the majority of stuff with Randall was shot at The Royal Ontario Museum, they wouldn’t allow the body display, so the production moved it to the front hall a college nearby.
OK!  That’s it!  I’m still totally overwhelmed by the stuff I haven’t mentioned, so if you have any other questions about the fest, feel free to send me an ask :) I have lots of stories.
Congratulations @fannibalfest-toronto on a truly amazing Convention! Here’s to one in 2018!

HFoH Ep20: Decoding All The God Talk
Tumblr media
We are sliding in just under the wire for 2017 with one last episode for the year! This time we are joined by @melythemac of Fannibal Fest, and she gives us details about her entry into the fandom, how she got involved with @fannibalfest-toronto , and behind-the scenes info about the convention and the locations tours. She showed up with an amazing selection of charcuterie, so warning, there are some light eating noises in the first half.
Amy appreciates Melanie and Jenn’s excellent explanations about all of Sakizuke’s God talk, and we take several moments to contemplate naked Hugh Dancy.  Melanie also gives a good argument for a well written fic that is out of our comfort zone, and let us know about her own work in progress.
So Fannibals, we wish you a happy new year, and we are looking forward to many podcasting adventures and to meeting more of you in 2018! Until then, you can listen to Ep20: Decoding All The God Talk on our website, iTunes, or your favorite podcast platform.

Hannibal had a (afaik) fan-organised con called Fannibalfest. They also had actors appear at their cons. Here's a link to their website. If anyone seriously wants to do this, maybe try contacting them? But they haven't had a con since 2018 so idk if you would get an answer. I assume there's other fan-organised cons too.
How realistic would it be to create something like Conventions by the fans for the fans? In terms of getting actors, writers, etc to actually be able to and want to participate? I mean getting funds, sorting out all the contracts, legal stuff etc. It could be/start as as online thing...

A wealthy benefactor who is also a Fannibal has decided to donate 5 tickets to giveaway to people who otherwise can't afford it. No, seriously like, don't enter if you can pay for tickets. Oh you also have to have a tumblr blog which they don't tell you is the case if you enter ONLY via their website at FannibalFest.com and there are only 5 tickets. Also, despite all of this, it seems NO ONE IS INTERESTED in even attempting to get free tickets. Imagine that.
