HFoH Ep 40: Hannibal has a big sad.

We also have a sad, in that this is not our favorite episode of the show, but that’s okay because we still have a lot to say about it. It has one of Amy’s least favorite murders in the show (so gross!), and we agree that the firefly man just doesn’t work for us as a tableau. But we do like Chiyo, and that’s a bonus! Plus we are inching towards Jenn’s favorite episode, the one at the Verger estate.
So whether or not Hannibal sadly washing Bedelia’s hair and jauntily hosting dinner parties for insufferable academics while Will pines and lurks in the misty forests of Lithuania is your thing, you can hear all about it on Ep 40: Hannibal has a big sad at our website or your favorite podcast platform.

HFoH Ep39: This is our Great Be-Comeback

We had planned on jumping back into regular Hannibal content this spring, but soon after recording this episode life got busier than expected. It included a shadow puppet rock opera, a puppy, and a new job. Now things have calmed down and we are back with our take on Season Three Episode Two, Primavera.
Ep39: This is our Great Be-Comeback can be found on our website or your favorite podcast platform. You can reach us through Twitter or email us at [email protected] if you want to talk about Hannibal or anything we mentioned in the episode, or want to bring any related content to our attention.
Amy takes all the credit and blame for the episode title.

HFoH Ep38: The Untamed Edition, or, Trash Boyfriends Assemble!

In a slight deviation from our usual Hannibal-centric content we decided to use our platform for purposes both good and demonic evil and invite some equally-obsessed friends to join us for 2+ hours of getting all up in our feelings about The Untamed.
We’ve brought up series several times, and must thank our past guest Slippy for introducing us to the show. Slippy did an excellent summary about it when she joined us for Ep35: A bittersweet initiation, which is awesome because only after recording did we realize we never actually summed up the plot of The Untamed in any way, shape, or form. Jenn did lay out a number of reasons why Fannibals might want to check out the show, though, so we did keep you all in mind.
So this episode is not a recap or even all that coherent at times, and spoilers abound, but if you like listening to people talk enthusiastically about something they love please join us! Ep38: The Untamed Edition, or, Trash Boyfriends Assemble! can be found on our website or your favorite podcast platform. You can reach us through Twitter or email us at [email protected] if you too have feelings to get out about The Untamed (or anything, really).
Next episode we plan on getting back to our usual programming, so Hannibal feelings will resume soon!

HFoH Ep37: I am a serial obsessionist.

Folks, it has been a minute. Like so many others, 2020 hit us hard and dragged us down. Even though we knew we weren’t giving up the podcast, it was tough fighting against the inertia that set in over the year.
Luckily with Hannibal getting a Netflix release this past summer we’ve seen a lot of new blood, which has really motivated us back into action. An old friend is a new Fannibal, so we asked Kim to join us one afternoon for a semi-structured session to talk about the show and what it’s like coming into the fandom. This is a long one because we were having so much fun being back together while chatting with someone who is in the murder husbands honeymoon stage. We have another slightly format-divergent episode coming up after this one, then we’re back to our usual business because we are finishing the damn show, we swear!
You can find Ep 37: I am a serial obsessionist. on our website or your favorite podcast platform. Fannibals new and old can contact us at [email protected] or on Twitter if you want to catch up after the unexpected hiatus, or tell us about your Hannibal obsession.

2020 sapped our podcasting energy, but we’re currently working on a new episode and plan on being more active in 2021. In the meantime, here’s a pic of Amy and Producer Justin’s 2nd holiday cheese and meat plate. At least we’ve been eating well!

Fan from China says hi!I have just recently found out your podcast, and what a treasure! For several years I have almost no one to talk to about Hannibal and Hannigram, though there is a medium-sized devoted fannibal community in China, but aside from my friends whom I forced to watch Hannibal with me, I almost never meet anyone in real life as into Hannibal as me. And I have never got to any comic con to meet up anyone.
Wow! All the way from China! It’s so great to hear that you enjoy our podcast. I (Jenn) have been leaning on podcasts more lately to feel connected to the outside world. And fannibals are a special group. (keep forcing people to watch it :) Maybe we will get our season 4). Thank you so much for the message - it really feels good to know there are people out there enjoying it!

HFoH Ep36: Hello sexy predator!

It’s been a few weeks since we recorded this episode, and honestly it feels more like a few lifetimes. For the foreseeable future we’ll record remotely, which will be a big change. Sitting down at the recording table together and getting the chance to go on and on about Hannibal is one of our favorite things, and we’re sure it’ll work out fine even if we do miss our in-person dates. And going out for meat and cheese platters afterwards, the one from last month was pretty damn sweet.
But onward, to Season 3! Though Will Graham is missing, we’re happily distracted by a leather-clad Hannibal, who, when not moping about his sad boy, is toying with the imposter to Will’s throne, Thirsty Scarf Dad. We’re also reminded that we really want to do a Bedelia focused episode sometime, because she is such a fascinating character.
Beyond Hannibal, Amy yells some more about The Untamed, and recommends the poetry of Richard Siken, who has popped up in six fics she’s read in as many months. Jenn liked the psychologically complicated filk Horse Girl, and Producer Justin pointed out the nuanced true crime podcast Dark Poutine for anyone looking to explore the genre (or who, like Amy, doesn’t jibe with My Favorite Murder).
You can find Ep 36: Hello sexy predator! on our website, Apple Music, Spotify, or your favorite podcast platform; and you can contact us at [email protected] or on Twitter if you too want to chat about the finer points of Mads in riding leathers.

HFoH Ep35: A Bittersweet Initiation

We have finally made it to Mizumono! And we have a guest! It just so happened that @damnslippyplanet was in Baltimore over the holidays, so we managed to carve out (hah!) an afternoon for drinks, snacks, podcasting. For anyone who is not familiar, you can find her on Twitter and over at AO3, where she wrote one of Amy’s favorite Hannibal fics.
Thank you Slippy for hanging out with us, you were so well prepared and a podcasting natural! Besides, nothing says winter fun like talking about a lot of angst, blood, and repressed feelings, right?
This episode we also give a bunch of holiday fic recs, which can still feel appropriate if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere and not, like Baltimore, currently experiencing unseasonably warm temperatures due to climate change. Check our website for all the links! We also do some yelling about The Untamed, which Slippy helpfully summarizes because boy is it a lot, and we mourn the wasted potential of American Gods.
So join us as we get all up in our Mizumono feels! You can find Ep 35: A Bittersweet Initiation on our website, iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite podcast platform, and feel free to contact us though email or social media if you too want to yell about any of the things we discussed today.

HFoH Ep34: Superhero Origin Story

We’re still trying to coordinate the busy schedule of several adults, and well into the winter holiday season, so until we can get to our Mizumono throwdown scheduled we decided to explore some of the Hannibal film canon.
That means this episode we are talking about Hannibal and Hannibal Rising. For the first one, Amy found it so boring that she forgot the ending in the 12 hours between watching the movie and talking about it. For the second, Jenn pointed out that it really is an origin story. This means that Hannibal, the best cook, medical illustrator, medical student, tracker, killer, etc. must be a superhero. We watched it with drinks, snacks, and snarky commentary, which made the process, if not the movie itself, enjoyable. Ranger gives it two paws down for Too Many Dogs.
You can find Ep 34: Superhero Origin Story on our website, iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite podcast platform, and feel free to send us your comments, criticism, or suggestions of other Hannibal-TV-adjacent media we should check out.

HFoH Ep 33: 30-50 Feral Verger Hogs

Ok, we made the obvious joke with the episode title, but it was just too good to pass up. This time around we’re discussing Tome Wan, and serving up some bonus pig-related ASMR content at the very end. In between we have a lot of fun things we dug up recently, including Benito Skinner’s Hannibal-esque take on dating a Virgo, the brilliant “Hannibal as Instagram influencer” AU, and Alexandra Rowland’s two brilliant rants about keeping fics creatively sexy.
We must also point out that since we recorded this episode, @thirstaidkitpodcast is back! Please check them out, because they are funny, sexy, and smart.
You can find Ep 33: 30-50 Feral Verger Hogs on our website, iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite podcast platform, and feel free to send us your comments, criticism, or cries of irritation that we impulsively dipped our toes into (crappy) ASMR production!

AO3 won the 2019 Hugo Award for Best Related Work!
Here’s the speech given by Naomi Novik when the award was accepted:
All fanwork, from fanfic to vids to fanart to podfic, centers the idea that art happens not in isolation but in community. And that is true of the AO3 itself. We’re up here accepting, but only on behalf of literally thousands of volunteers and millions of users, all of whom have come together and built this thriving home for fandom, a nonprofit and non-commercial community space built entirely by volunteer labor and user donations, on the principle that we needed a place of our own that was not out to exploit its users but to serve them.
Even if I listed every founder, every builder, every tireless support staff member and translator and tag wrangler, if I named every last donor, all our hard work and contributions would mean nothing without the work of the fan creators who share their work freely with other fans, and the fans who read their stories and view their art and comment and share bookmarks and give kudos to encourage them and nourish the community in their turn.
This Hugo will be joining the traveling exhibition that goes to each Worldcon, because it belongs to all of us. I would like to ask that we raise the lights and for all of you who feel a part of our community stand up for a moment and share in this with us.

I shot this portrait of Mads back in 2000 when he was starting out out as an actor. He was very dedicated and willing to experiment with different techniques that I suggested. I wanted a dramatic concept that illustrated Mads’ wild and intense spirit. My idea was to have the branches behind him moving vigorously to create a storm like effect. Mads’ 7 year old daughter helped out by pulling strings we had attached to branches behind him which gave the image a very intense atmosphere! I love when you can create a lot with very little! HFoH Ep32: Dickmotized By Dr Lecter

Nestled in the middle of this episode we talk about Hannibal S2 Ep11, but warning, around that we go on a lot of tangents. Join us as we talk about other things we’ve been watching, including “Always Be My Maybe” and, like the rest of the world it seems, “Good Omens”. If you want some more angels in your fic, Amy recommends “Knowing Exactly What You Are Is Not for the Faint of Heart” by HigherMagic, though this is definitely Hannibal-style celestial beings. Also, there’s a side conversation about our love of the mizmar (also known as the zurna) and the West Coast Whistle, and we talk about a snippet of local history and issue a (partial) retraction on our “There are no tunnels under Baltimore at all, WTH Bryan?” stance.
You can find Ep 32: Dickmotized by Dr Lecter on our website, iTunes, Spotify, or your favorite podcast platform, and feel free to send us your comments, criticism, or thoughts about how exactly you’d like to deal with Mason “the worst person in this entire series” Verger.
