Starting Over Chapter 21 ~The Obstacle Is The Way~
He turned onto his stomach and reached out to the other side of his bed. Realising Claire had gone, he mushed his face into the pillow and groaned. Jamie inhaled the scent of their lovemaking, absorbing it into his bloodstream. She must have gone to work and hadn't bothered waking him up even though he'd insisted on making her breakfast. Stubborn woman!  What did he say about wanting a morning cuddle before getting up from bed, the first time they had made love? He made a mental note to emphasise that matter on her later on.
Suddenly invigorated, he got up, had a quick shower and threw on a rugby hoody sweatshirt and a pair of jeans. He went to the kitchen and started the coffee, pausing to watch the street below him rouse in the early morning light. His lips curled as he remembered last night's bedroom romp.
He considered their relationship official, whether Claire still needed to slow things down a notch or not.
Jamie dragged a hand over the back of his neck and mused. He liked having her in his apartment, and after just one night, there were already reminders of her presence. Like her sweet, floral scent that still lingered in the air, the toilet seat was down, and the dishes from dinner were already washed and dried. Surprise flitted through him at the realisation. Deep down, even if he didn't realise it back then, he'd always known Claire was different from all the women he'd met, and her stayover last night proved why. Everything felt natural with her, just like the way their bodies fitted perfectly together. He loved their honest and uninhibited lovemaking. He loved the way she had clung onto him while she screamed his name. They had reached out for each other many times through the night, their desire insatiable. No one had ever surrendered everything to him as thoroughly as Claire had. At first, he'd been humbled by her trust. Then he'd simply lost himself in her. Although the physical experience was mind-blowing and depleted him to the point, he could barely stand, it was their mind and soul connection that had the most profound impression. The last thing he'd expected was her reaching inside his chest and rearranging everything. She made him feel things he'd never felt before and crave for more.
Jamie poured a flask of the steaming coffee and took a moment in the kitchen to gather his thoughts. With the awards event tomorrow night coming and the possibility of work in London, they needed to have a serious talk. It might be too soon and happening too fast for Claire, but the fact of the matter is that their relationship had reached a fork in the road. After realising what he felt for her and having spent time together, he didn't know if he could turn back to the way it was.
There was really no option but to persuade her to come with him if he gets the job. Scotland might be her home, and leaving everything behind would mean giving up a lot, but there was the two of them now, and he vowed to make it work. But first, he needed to convince her he was here for the long haul. Jamie knew Claire wasn't dubbed the Runaway Bride by the papers for nothing having endured her proneness to disappear first hand. He just had to make sure she knew she had no reason or cause to run.
Satisfied with his reasoning and logic, he packed the flask of coffee into a backpack, grabbed his car keys and headed out of the apartment to drop off her brew and most importantly, collect his morning kiss from Claire. And after that, he needed to see Ned Gowan and find out what was happening with Frank's case. He wanted Frank out of Claire's life once and for all.
..........
He loves me!  Smiling, Claire stood up from her chair and stretched, but she flinched the moment she felt the residual effects of Jamie. She had whisker burns on her cheeks and neck, sore hips where he'd gripped and yanked her body, and a sensitivity between her legs that wouldn't wane.
After making love last night, they'd bonded over dinner and made love some more, something, which she believed, his previous flings could never boast. Knowing that relationships were a novelty to Jamie, she'd decided not to get carried away in case she send him running for the commitment-free hills. Her course of action was to take things gradually, even if it meant living separately for a while if he got the job at the network. If he truly loved her like she loved him, a long-distance relationship should be fine, until they worked out a permanent solution.
She'd just put on her white coat and was about to grab a patient's file when a murmur of female voices swelled outside her office door. She frowned, wondering what was going on. Clinic waiting rooms were never quiet, but this unusual disturbance had a strange tone. The high-pitched giggles and chairs scraping back caused her to still and listen more intently.
Then she heard Jamie talking to the head receptionist.
"Ach, Mary. Have ye done something to yer hair? Ye look absolutely gorgeous. And who is this working with ye? This must be where all the pretty lasses of Edinburgh work."
There were shameless cackling, followed by a lot of brazen innuendos and suggestive propositions.
"Beautiful as ye all are, I'm afraid I'm already spoken for," Jamie flirted, making Claire's eyes roll in disbelief.  Bloody unbelievable!  His admission resulted in a string of tittering and gushing. "If ye dinnae mind I'm actually here to drop Dr Beauchamp's coffee, and I promise I won't take much of her time. I know ye're all verra busy. But I brought something sweet for yer break later. Cupcakes, ladies?"
Claire opened the door and popped her head out. Immediately, Jamie straightened up, and their gazes collided, giving her a look that told her he only had eyes for her. Oh sweet Mother of God!  Although dressed down, he looked effortlessly good with his sweatshirt and jeans outlining his athletic body and accentuating the sculpted muscles beneath. He looked like he'd just stepped out of her fantasies to seduce her at work and scramble her brain. He flashed her a crooked grin, and she felt a tug at her heartstrings. She sensed he had the same effect on the rest of the women in the room and wondered if he was aware of it.
"Ach, there's the woman I came to see," he announced without taking his eyes off her. The female staff and patients fell back into their seats and sighed as they followed the direction of his gaze, making the men grunt and snort in disgust. Oblivious to the reactions, Jamie left the box of cupcakes on the reception counter and started towards her, not bothering to wait to be authorised.
Bloody hell!?!  Claire opened her mouth to say something, but no words formed as she slowly backed into her office. Her buttocks collided into the desk, and she clutched the edge to remain upright. As soon as he made it through the door, he kicked it shut. She watched him advance with a mixture of awe, confusion and shock.
"J-Jamie, what the hell do you think you are doing? I have patients waiting to be attended out there."
Jamie propped his hands on either side of her and stared into her eyes. An appreciative sound vibrated from his throat as he leaned in and buried his nose against her neck. He took a deep breath and hummed. "I think ye forgot something this morning when ye left my apartment for work."
"I did?" She racked her brain, thinking.
"Uh-huh." She watched him lick his lips. "Ye forgot this." His eyelids fell to half-mast, and then he kissed her, brushing his lips tantalisingly on her own.
"Jamie!" she gasped. "Dr Grey could walk in any minute."
"This won't take a minute," he whispered, ignoring her fret.
The creasing at the corners of his eyes made Claire smile despite herself.  Damn!  Caught in a swirl of shower gel scent, all she could do was give in and try to relax. She relented, slipped her arms around Jamie's neck and kissed him back. He smiled against her mouth, warm and wet, mint and coffee on his tongue.
"That's better," he whispered, drawing away. "That wasn't difficult, was it?"
"Is that what you came here for?"
He ignored her question as he slid off the backpack from behind him. He pulled out a flask of coffee and a wrapped sandwich and placed them on her desk. "Ye didnae have breakfast. I thought ye might want this later."
Her surprise was eclipsed by gratitude. She hadn't had time to eat earlier when she left Jamie's apartment. She'd driven to her cottage, showered and went straight to work forgoing even a cup of coffee. "Thank you."
"Ye're welcome." He pulled into his jean's pocket, took her hand and planted something on her palm. "I'm cooking dinner tonight, and ye'll probably need this." Claire looked down and realised he'd given her keys. "Dinnae bother ringing the bell. And attach it to yer keychain, so ye dinnae lose it."
What?  Bewildered, she stared at the keys like it was some foreign object and held her breath. "What's the meaning of this, Jamie?" She raised her eyes to his. "You want to give me your keys?"
Jamie winked and shrugged like it was no big deal. "I'll be busy preparing food. I thought ye should just let yersel' in when ye come over. Saves me running to open the door in case I burn something." Then his face went a touch serious. "Ye can keep it. And umm, ... before I forget, I'll be seeing Ned today, and we'll try and get yer things from Frank."
She narrowed her eyes at him. "Whoa! Back-pedal a bit. You want me to keep your keys?"
"Weel, it does make sense if we're going to be spending a lot of time together," he reasoned.
She snorted. "What makes you think the time we'll be spending together will be a lot?"
He grinned. "Unwavering, unrelenting persistence?"
She shook her head in wonder. Lately, Jamie had been full of surprises, and she could hardly keep up. Part of her wanted to slow everything down a smidge. But he seemed happy enough doing things for her and took his boyfriend role like a duck to water. If he wasn't making a big deal out it, she wouldn't either. She gave him a small smile. "Can we have dinner at my place instead? I have things to do at home, like laundry and stuff."
"Fine with me. I'll stop by the shop on the way," he said. "Ye need me to bring anything in particular while I'm out?"
She beamed. "You realise that repeatedly bringing me food and cooking for me is comparable to feeding a stray cat, right? You might never get rid of me now."
"Good," he said, pulling her in for a hug. "That was the plan." He tilted her chin and looked down at her. "Make space for my tuxedo in your wardrobe. I'll be bringing it with me for the award event tomorrow. Do ye have a dress for tomorrow night?"
Make space for Jamie's stuff?  She swallowed. She hadn't recovered from receiving his apartment keys yet, and now he wanted her to make room for him in her wardrobe. Unease warred with amusement. "Umm, yeah ...Geillis is lending me a dress."
"Good, that's sorted then."
She masked her mounting confusion and gave him an apologetic smile. "I um ...I best get back to work."
"Aye, of course ..."
She made a move, but he stopped her and pulled her in again.
"Yes?"
He stared at her for a moment, something soft playing around the edges of his smile. Then he leaned over and kissed her. It was a short but gentle kiss, and when it was over, he stroked her cheek with his thumb. "I love ye, Sassenach."
"Oh ..."
Jamie arched an eyebrow. "Oh?"
She was not yet used to the idea of being with him. She was still months away or maybe even years from getting used to the idea that he was James Fraser. The man she'd been crushing for years. The only way she dealt with this fact was by not focusing on his semi-celebrity status. He was just a man like any other with insecurities and flaws.
He's my boyfriend, and he loves me.  She said it over and over again in her head.
She felt flattered and lucky. Then she felt nervous and uncertain. She ran through a gamut of emotions as Jamie looked at her and waited for some reaction. He seemed happy to be with her and didn't mind her seeing this side of him. This was not the James Fraser from the articles written for the tabloids nor from the stories spoken in social media. She reminded herself this was her Jamie, the real and authentic, James Fraser the public never saw.
With a sigh, she stood on her tip-toes and nuzzled her nose to his. "I love you too, Jamie."
She was rewarded with a heart-stopping smile and a slap on the bum before he turned and left.  Unbelievable!
..........
"For crying out, Claire, will ye stop fidgeting. I cannae send ye out to the award's night with a crooked hem."
Claire looked down at Geillis, wielding a needle and thread like a weapon. Her friend knelt at her feet, furiously repairing the hem that had come undone.
The moment Geillis had heard about the British Sport's Award date, she'd insisted on lending the gown and had come prepared to dress Claire for battle, so she called it.
"You must be tired after working all day with all those children," Claire sympathised. "You didn't have to do this. I can afford to buy a dress, you know."
She finished repairing and grabbed the steamer. "I've been looking forward to getting ye into this dress for a while, so it worked out fine. I bought this on the whim a while ago and realised too late it doesnae suit me because of my hair colour." She leaned back on her heels and inspected the material for any more creases. "This looks bonnie on ye and shows off yer beautiful skin. Now all ye need to do is channel the old Hollywood glamour."
Claire laughed. "It's a sports' award ceremony, not a red carpet event."
Geillis waved a hand in the air. "Aye, I ken. But the cameras will be on Jamie, and ye'll be by his side. Both of ye'd be like the Beckhams of rugby. Now go and check yersel' in the mirror and tell me what ye think."
She stepped in front of the full-length mirror and caught her breath.
The bold scarlet dress dropped low in the front, clinging just below her shoulders, and hugging her body before sweeping down in folds of glimmering material. Her hair was fastened high on her head, with corkscrew curls cascading around her ears and the back of her neck, and her red toenails poked out of her strappy nude sandals encased feet. Her lips were generously applied with cherry red lipstick and her eyes, dramatic and smokey.
Claire turned to her friend. "Geillis! I can hardly recognise myself. And my boobs! They look like they're about to pop out!"
"Yer boobs are fine, and they aren't going anywhere," Geillis pointed out. "And ye look bloody gorgeous. Now, quit worrying while I go over the rules with ye."
Huh? Claire narrowed her gaze. "What rules?"
Rolling her eyes, Geillis got up on her feet and gripped her by the shoulders. "First things first. The problem with ye is, ye're too good. I dinnae ken much the type of people who will be at the awards, but if they're anything like the people in Frank's circle, ye need to keep yer wits about ye. Are ye with me?" Geillis gave Claire a long look and waited until she nodded. "Good. Now, there will be plenty of women out there who are gonnae hate ye because ye're with Jamie. So don't be too nice. Be a little mean but not too much that ye'd look like a bitch."
Claire's lips quirked in amusement.
"I'm serious, Claire. Ye have to start believing ye're worthy. Because ye are. I hated it when Frank made ye feel otherwise. And there are a lot of Franks out there. Not to mention backbiting women who will have their claws out ready to take a swipe at ye. When that happens, connect with that surgeon in ye and be clinical about it. It willnae be personal."
Claire sighed and gave her friend a hug. "Don't worry, Geillis. I'll be fine. And thank you so much for doing this for me."
Geillis sniffed and fussed with her dress some more. "I ken, ye'll be fine. I just want ye to be on yer guard."
"Jamie will be with me," Claire softly reminded.
"Ach, speaking of Jamie. He is like seriously into ye. It's all o'er his face. I ken the look when someone's in love."
Claire smiled. "Well, he's cooked for me and brought coffee and snacks to work."
"Aye," Geillis nodded in approval. "That's one of the signs when a lad's into ye."
"And he gave me the keys to his apartment."
Geillis stilled and looked at her like she'd grown a second head. "No fucking way! Really?"
She grinned. "Yes, way."
Geillis' lips formed an O, and she shook her head. "Weel, weel, I never thought I'd see the day when the mighty James Fraser falls for a lass."
"Early days yet. And Jamie's new to this relationship thing. We don't know how it's going to pan out."
"So, have ye had sex with him?"
"Geillis! Keep your voice down!" Claire hissed, launching a look at the door. Jamie was in the living room, making some calls to his lawyer and agent. "You forget the walls are thin in this house."
"Weel?" Geillis asked, giving her crazy eyes.
Claire blanched. "Yes, a few times."
"Oh my God! And here I thought ye're making him wait and work hard for it. Ye and Jamie are certainly making history here."
"I didn't plan it. It just happened," Claire shrugged, attempting to push her breast into the dress.
"Hmmm. Is it true what they say about guys with big feet? Ye ken what they say ...the size of a man's feet can tell ye something about the size of his ..."
"I'm not telling you that!"
"I was gonnae say, heart."
Claire glared at her friend. "Yeah, right!"
"I like him," Geillis declared, all of a sudden.
Claire looked at her friend with new eyes and grinned. "Aww, now who's making history here?"
"He's good to ye. And ye're happy. And I like seeing that."
Claire took a deep breath. "I am happy, Geillis."
Geillis eyes went soft. "Good. Now hold on tight to yer lad and keep fighting for that happiness ye both deserve. I have a feeling it's gonnae be a wild ride. And make fucking sure that the world knows, no one can put Claire Elizabeth Beauchamp down and not come out unscathed." She took a step back, looked at Claire's dress with critical eyes and then plumped her breast. "Now go smash the Brit's award and show them what ye're made of."
..........
Tugging at the bowtie of his tuxedo, Jamie paced Claire's living room and glanced at his watch. Still plenty of time. He heard Geillis' high pitched chatter and Claire's softer low voice in the bedroom. Restless, he peered out the window and saw the chauffeur-driven Bentley waiting outside. To his amusement, the neighbours were slowly coming out of their houses to have a nosey.
He'd hired a chauffeur for the occasion so that he could hold Claire's hand on their way to the British Sports Awards in case she panicked. He couldn't blame her if she did as the paparazzi and the crowd could be intimidating and overwhelming. After all these years he still wasn't used to the media circus and loathed it.
The bedroom door opened, and he turned around and waited for the girls to come in from the hallway. A grinning Geillis came in first, and when Claire appeared, his jaw almost hit the floor. She looked insanely breathtaking, and he knew immediately she would stand out in her red dress, among the sea of blacks and whites favoured by the celebrated attendees. Her shoulders were completely bare, and his eyes were immediately drawn to the creamy swell of her breast.
Tits!
Eyes fixed on Claire, he hadn't noticed Geillis approach and place a hand under his chin to close his mouth. She laughed. "Is that all ye can say ...tits!"
Ah, fuck, did I just say that out loud?!
Geillis fixed his bowtie. "By the looks of it, I think my job is done here."
"Huh?" He just about managed to tear his gaze away from Claire and glance down at Geillis. "Sorry?"
Geillis' cheeks dimpled as she smoothed out his lapels. "I asked what yer shoe size is."
He was confused. "Shoe size?"
"Don't answer that," Claire intervened to his relief. Geillis almost always gave him a headache, and she seemed to get a kick out of putting someone in an uncomfortable situation or confusing them with her crazy humour.
Jamie waited as the girls said their goodbyes, and as soon as Geillis shut the door after her, he let out a huge sigh.
"Sorry about that," Claire apologised, as she came closer to him. "She's mad, and she likes messing with me." Her eyes gave him a head to toe sweep, and she smiled. "You look dashing and very handsome in your tux."
Jamie's heart and body responded intensely to the vision of her that he could only stand there and breathe through it. He wished he was whisking her away to Paris right now instead of some event full of arse-kissers.
"You don't like the dress," she whispered, her dainty fingers tugging the top part of her gown in a futile attempt to cover her breast. "Geillis left me another dress to wear. I actually prefer it to this one. It's more conservative and fitting for where we're going."
"Sassenach ..."
"Geillis could be quite persuasive and pushy at times. It won't take me a minute to change. If you could just ..."
"Sassenach, ye look perfect. Ye are perfect in every way."
The worry in her eyes evaporated, and he felt like kicking himself for placing it there in the first place. "Thank you. Shall we go?"
"Not yet." He took her hand and pulled her in, his lips brushing her cheeks, careful not to ruin her makeup. "Did ye remember to pack extra clothes? We're staying overnight in Glasgow, remember?"
"Yes," she breathed, her arms sliding around his neck. "It will be like our first mini getaway together."
"Aye, it will be that." He looked down at her and had to restrain himself from kissing her. "Listen up. Ye stick by me all night, okay?"
"Of course." Her fingers caressed the nape of his neck, causing his chest to feel tight. "Are you nervous? Because I am."
"No." Jamie dipped his head and caught her earlobe between his teeth. When her head fell back, he couldn't help gliding his lips down her throat. "I wasnae sure what I was thinking. This plan of showing you off as my girlfriend ..." His thumb stroked the hollows of her cheekbones. "I dinnae like it. I dinnae think this far ahead."
Her eyes closed, and her lips parted.  Christ, she's gorgeous.  "You don't want people to know I'm your girlfriend?" she asked.
"Jesus! I want to shout out to the world ye're mine but ..."
Her amber eyes popped open. "I don't understand."
Jamie searched for the right words, but Claire's mouth kept distracting him. He shifted his focus to her eyes. "I-I dinnae want ye on display. I dinnae want us on display for the world to pick apart. Articles might be written about us, and sometimes the words are hurtful. I dinnae mind if they write horrible things about me, but I dinnnae wish that for ye."
Claire cupped his face with both of her hands and forced him to look at her. "Jamie. I'm made of sturdier stuff. I'm not going to break apart because of other people's opinion. Besides, I've been through worse ..."
He let out a humourless laugh. "Och, aye? What's that?"
"If you insist on hearing it ..." She wrinkled her nose. "Spurting blood on the operating table, disembowelled...
"Fine, I get it." He pressed his face on the side of her neck for the final time. "Just stand by me and stay close. That's all I ask. If it gets too much, ye let me know, and we'll go. Promise me that."
"I promise."
"Good lass." He started to pull away to get their bags.
"Jamie?"
"Aye?"
"We can do this, and it will be fine."
The last few weeks came back to him in a rush of colour and sound. Claire was forefront and centre of every memory. Calling him out for being too cocky when they first met in Lallybroch, catching her fall from the church window, agreeing to run away with him to Cullen, suggesting to be his fake girlfriend so he could get the job at the network, playing rugby in the middle of a rainstorm, sitting in her kitchen table and telling him he was more than the sport. Somewhere along the line, he'd started to see her strength and resilience and believe in her.
Of course, they could do this. And it would be fine. If not, Jamie would do everything in his power to make it more than fine. And bugger with the network.
He smiled. "Aye, with ye beside me, it will be fine."

An Offer I Can't Refuse. Part 5a
Cowritten with @fairheads.
-x-
After a surprisingly good night with only two wake ups Charlie and Duffy were awoken the next morning by a loud knocking on the door which started Peter crying.
"Urgh, it's probably the postman. Can you get Peter and bring him down?" Duffy yawned.
“Sure, I’ll be right down.” Charlie confirmed, watching Duffy as she tried to scramble for her clothes as the door bell rang again.
Letting out a sigh she gave up and settled for throwing on a vest top and shorts before heading to the door. Pulling open the door she was shocked to see her mum stood on the doorstep.
"Mum! I... Erm... I didn't think you were back til tomorrow..!"
“I came back early. You’d think you have something to hide!” Kate raised her eyebrows at her daughter.
"Um, not at all!" Duffy giggled awkwardly, trying to hide herself behind the door without it seeming too obvious what she was doing.
“What are you doing!? You could help me with my bags!”
"Oh... Yeh... Sure..." Duffy stammered as she moved to grab the bags and turn around as fast as she could.
Kate was looking at her, trying to figure out what was different... “Where’s my lovely grandson?”
"He's..." Duffy's words were cut off as Charlie appeared at the top of the stairs, clad in just his boxers, holding Peter who was giggling and wriggling.
Kate turned from Duffy to Charlie and back again. “Would you care to tell me what is going on?”
"He... Erm... Charlie needed a place to crash last night. He's... Um... He's having work done at his place..." Duffy babbled in a panic, wrapping her arms around herself in an attempt to hide her swollen belly.
“Building work? At this time of year? Do you think I’m an idiot Lisa?” Kate responded.
Charlie had decided it best he take Peter and get some clothes on before venturing downstairs!
"I... Erm... I should probably get dressed... Then we can have a cuppa..."
Just as Duffy started to walk away, Kate noticed her tummy. “Lisa Duffin, you turn back round now.”
Duffy sighed and turned around.
“Your tummy!” Kate was genuinely shocked. “Please in God’s name, tell me you’re not pregnant again...”
"I... Er..." Duffy stuttered.
Charlie decided it was the perfect moment to enter the conversation. He wrapped his arms around Duffy’s shoulders, “We're having a baby, Kate.”
Duffy pulled away awkwardly. "I... Er... I need to get dressed!" She turned and dashed up the stairs.
Charlie was left downstairs with Kate. Unsure what to say and still holding Peter.
"I thought I could trust you around my daughter!"
“Oh you can Mrs Duffin, I care for your daughter greatly.”
"Clearly not enough to be a bit more careful." Kate retorted.
“I will support her and the baby and Peter.”
"I suppose that's a step up from the last idiot she got pregnant by."
Charlie was lost for words. He was wondering where Duffy had got to.
Kate reached out to take Peter from Charlie. "I think you should probably be leaving now."
“Can I just go and see her?” Charlie asked, passing Peter over to Kate.
"Two minutes."
“Thanks.” Charlie raced up the stairs and found Duffy in her bedroom.
"Let me guess, she's thrown you out?" Duffy sighed from where she sat in the middle of the bed.
She looked tiny, sitting in the middle of the bed, her legs pulled up to her chest. Charlie nodded. “But I’ll be back!” He tried to remain positive. She looked so sad.
"The appointment is at 1.30pm. Might be easier to just meet you there. She'll just get worse if you come back here." Duffy sighed.
Charlie sat down next to Duffy and reached for her hand. He intertwined his fingers with hers. “I just need to show her she can trust me. I’ll leave now, but I hope you know I’m not going anywhere. I’ll see you just before 1:30.”
"I'll sit her down and explain the situation." Duffy replied softly as she stared at their intertwined hands.
“Okay.” Charlie stood up to leave, their fingers still connected until the last minute. He couldn’t get over how vulnerable she looked. “It’ll be okay.” He reassured her, bending down to kiss her tenderly.
She wanted to pull away but she found herself in need of his comfort.
“I’ve got to go...” He tried to pull away.
"I know... I'll see you later." She attempted a smile to reassure him.
“I l... I’ll see you later,” Charlie had almost whispered the words I love you, but settled for the see you later at last minute. It almost physically hurt leaving her. Something seemed to be shifting between them, was she finally letting him in?
A few minutes after Charlie had left Duffy trudged back downstairs to face her mum.
Kate had put Peter in his high chair and was busy washing up the remnants of the previous night. She heard Duffy enter the kitchen but refused to turn around.
"Look at you messy pup!" Duffy chuckled at her son who seemed to be wearing most of his breakfast!
Peter smiled at his mother, reaching to touch her with his grubby fingers. Kate continued to ignore her.
Duffy scooped some of the cereal onto the spoon Peter had discarded in favour of his hands. "Mummy help you?"
Peter let his mother feed him the remainder of the cereal, babbling softly. Kate finished the washing up and turned around. “I can’t believe you’ve been so stupid Lisa.”
"I can explain..." Duffy began.
“I’m listening,” Her mother replied, crossing her arms and leaning back against the sink.
"Me and Charlie... We're just friends..."
“Friends don’t need to have children together.”
"We got talking and it just kind of happened. It seemed like the perfect solution. Charlie would get to be a dad and Peter wouldn't be stuck as an only child."
Kate was exasperated and started ranting at Duffy. “What kind of fantasy land do you live in Lisa? Do you honestly expect Charlie to be interested in being a father when he’s down the pub with young, attractive girls throwing themselves at him? He’s a handsome chap, he’ll soon get bored with nights looking after two children. You’re deluded Lisa, you’ve agreed to be surrogate for someone who isn’t even interested in you or a baby. How stupid can you be? You’re really gone and done it this time, haven’t you - you’ll be a single parent to two babies.” Her voice was getting more and more irate as she went on.
"He's a good man..!" Duffy argued.
“We’ll see about that won’t we!?” Kate sneered.
"We both knew what we were getting into from the start mum. We are friends, best friends, and we will raise this baby between us."
“You make it sounds so simple! Let’s see if he still wants to be best friends when reality hits!”
"What do you mean by that?" Duffy ran one hand through her hair whilst attempting to clean Peter up with a wipe in the other.
“We’ll see if he’s here when the baby is screaming, when you’re tired and trying to juggle two under two shall we? Let’s hope he’s not shagging some other girl when it’s late and you’re struggling. I hope your ‘best friendship’ stands up to this test.” Kate snapped viciously.
"You haven't seen how great he is with Peter. He'll be a wonderful dad."
“Because he only sees him for five minutes, anyone is wonderful with him for that amount of time. You’re in denial if you think that makes him a wonderful father.”
"Its not just that. He's already started buying things for the baby and is coming along to the scan later." Duffy retorted, folding her arms across her chest.
“Good luck to you, I have nothing else to say on the matter.” Kate abruptly ended the conversation and walked out of the room.
Duffy picked up Peter from his highchair and followed her mum, balancing the tot on her hip.
Kate was back to ignoring Duffy, she was struggling to carry her cases up the stairs.
"Look mum... Oh for goodness sake, let me do that! You take Peter."
“It’s fine!” Kate was her mother after all and had her daughter’s stubbornness!
"You're going to hurt your back again mum." Duffy sighed.
“Well you shouldn’t be lifting in your condition either should you?” Kate said pointedly.
"Oh for goodness sakes, not you as well!" Duffy rolled her eyes and huffed.
Kate ignored her and hauled the cases up the stairs. Duffy looked on incredulously.
"Fine! Be that way!" Duffy called up the stairs after her mum before taking Peter through to the lounge to play on the rug.
It took most of the morning but Duffy finally convinced her mum to watch Peter whilst she attended her scan. Her mother was still barely speaking to her so by the time she arrived at the hospital she was stressed and anxious.
Charlie was waiting outside the building for her, he noticed she looked stressed as she walked from her car.
"Don't ask." She sighed as she reached him, running a hand through her hair.
“Would you like a hug?” Charlie offered, he always seemed to know what she needed.
She smiled sadly and nodded.
“Come here you,” He enveloped her in his strong arms and just held her.
After a few moments she pulled back. "Apparently I'm a deluded idiot." She sighed.
“Well we both know that’s not true. Was it awful?”
"I had to beg her to look after Peter this afternoon and she says I can whistle if I think she's gunna look after both of them once the baby's here."
“That good hey?” He looked at her, she looked so tired and drawn. “We’ll prove her wrong.”
Duffy sighed. "Maybe she's right..."
“Look at me kid,” He pulled her chin up. “I’m not going anywhere, we’re in this together.”
"So you're not going to get bored of being a dad when a pretty girl takes your fancy?"
“There’s only one pretty girl I’ve got my eye on,” He winked at her.
"Oh ha ha!" She rolled her eyes but couldn't help giggling. "Come on, before we're late."
“Hey I’m serious!” He pretended to rugby tackle her into a hug, before she could move away. They both laughed. “Come on then, let’s go see this little one!” He said, walking with his arm around her shoulders.
"Are you determined to set the rumour mill on fire?"
“Yes!” He said laughing.
"You are terrible, you know that?"
He nodded and grinned at her.
They arrived at the reception of the clinic, and Duffy went to check in. Charlie meanwhile sat, looking a little nervous, waiting for her to return.
Charlie was starting to think she'd gotten lost when she finally rejoined him.
"Sorry, they had to wait for my blood pressure to come back down." She grumbled.
He turned to her, with concern in his eyes and desperately tried not to worry.
"Not a massive shock after I spent the morning arguing with my mother."
That made sense, he thought and hoped she was right. “What else did you have to do? Is the scan in a separate room?”
"Yeh, they'll call us through shortly. I hope it's soon coz I'm bursting for the toilet!"
“Uncomfortable?” He grimaced in sympathy.
She nodded. "Next time will be worse."
They waited for what seemed like ages, Duffy shifted uncomfortably in the chair next to him and Charlie trying hard not to hold her hand. Finally they called her name.
"I bet the whole hospital knows we're here by now." She muttered as she strode over to the scanning room.
“Probably! Am I that bad to be seen with?” He joked, following her into the room.
She made a big show of pondering his question as she attempted to make herself comfortable on the bed.
Charlie looked at her, expecting a reply. He sat in the chair next to the bed.
"Hmm... I think I've been seen out with worse..!"
“Hey!” He took mock offence. The sonographer soon interrupted their banter.
She explained the procedure and then waited for Duffy to tuck some tissue into her slightly lowered leggings and lift her top up out the way. Duffy gasped slightly even though she knew that the gel would be cold.
“Made you jump!” Charlie was leaning close to her, watching her every move.
"Its cold!" She pouted at him.
Charlie resisted saying anything about warming her up and instead, placed his hands right next to hers, leaning into her. He didn’t know if she would want him to hold her hand, but he wanted to be close.
It took a few moments but then the screen crackled into life.
Charlie and Duffy held their breath, they were used to working a scanner in the ED, but it was very different when it was their own child on the screen.
Duffy smiled as the screen settled, her trained eye quickly assessing the image.
Charlie nervously linked his fingers with hers.
Duffy giggled as the baby moved its arm. "I think he or she is trying to wave hello."
Charlie was choked up, he hadn’t expected the rush of emotion he experienced seeing their child on the screen. He couldn’t speak, just waved back with his free hand.
"You realise the baby can't see you right?" She giggled softly.
“Is everything okay? Are they okay?” He covered his mouth with his hand, tears springing - the emotion palpable.
The sonographer had been busy studying the scan and nodded. "All is as it should be for twelve weeks. All limbs are growing well, head is a good size and developing on track, placenta is working well and the baby has a good strong heartbeat."
Charlie let out a large sigh of relief. “That’s good Duffy, that’s good!”

Driveways, canyons, pools: NFL players create clever workouts
A farm. A field. A canyon. A pool. Even a driveway. As NFL players wait for a return to normalcy before the 2020 regular season begins, they have had to get creative with how and where they train.
The ripple effects of these unprecedented times -- nationwide social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic and an unknown timetable for a vaccine --have altered the professional sports landscape, and the NFL is no exception.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell authorized the reopening of all team facilities this week, in accordance with state and local regulations, although coaches and players who are not undergoing rehabilitation are prohibited from entering team buildings. While a handful of clubs took advantage of this allowance, states such as New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Virginia, Michigan, Illinois, Washington and California are still imposing heavier restrictions that affect a dozen team facilities.

How college football is looking to answer its coronavirus testing question
Could your smartwatch detect the coronavirus?
These inconsistent regulations have also changed the responsibilities of NFL strength trainers, who have spent time remotely assessing the workout needs of players, including their access to resources, as well as acting as liaisons for online equipment purchases. NFL teams were permitted to provide each player with up to $1,500 worth of workout equipment. Nevertheless, players have had to find inventive ways to stay in shape.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins uses his parents' driveway as his outdoor gym. New York Giants wide receiver Golden Tate mowed a track into a steep canyon near his home. Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver James Washington designed a training regimen on his Texas farm. New Orleans Saintslinebacker Demario Davis has his personal trainers living with him. Giants linebacker Blake Martinez became the beneficiary of a state-of-the-art gym. And Cleveland Browns punter Jamie Gillan grabbed some beers and built a "grubby" garage gym.
Even though players' locations, living situations and resources differ, there's a lesson shared by all: There are no excuses.
Big-money quarterback staying with parents
The playful jab is uttered without warning, hurled from the driver's side of a passing vehicle.
"Go Pack, go!"
And in that moment of lighthearted jest, Kirk Cousins can only ignore it. He knows the stop sign in front of the house makes him a sitting duck every morning.
Four times a week, starting promptly at 9 a.m., the Vikings quarterback gathers equipment from the garage and arranges it neatly on the long, curved pavement leading from his parents' house to the sidewalk. Resting on a wooden chair is his laptop, connected by videoconference to his longtime personal trainer, Chad Cook, who is 450 miles away in Atlanta. This is a glimpse into what constitutes the 2020 NFL offseason.

"I like my privacy, so being out in the driveway, on display for the whole neighborhood to see is probably less than ideal. But desperate times call for desperate measures," Cousins said with a smile during a recent ESPN interview. "If it means a guy drives by in a truck and yells, 'Go Pack, go!' at me while we're working out, then so be it."
The manicured lawns of this Orlando, Florida, suburb serve as a backdrop to Cousins' regimen and his attempt at normalcy in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
It's not a "home gym" by any means, Cousins concedes, but he insists he has everything he needs: a medicine ball, jump-rope, foam rollers, free weights and a football. And, the most essential tool of all: the laptop he uses to connect with Cook.
"[Every car will] see me doing my shuffles across the driveway, or my cariocas, or doing the jump-rope or different plank exercises, core work, medicine ball, lunges -- whatever it may be. And different people honk or wave, so it's kind of fun," said Cousins, who signed a two-year, $66 million extension with the Vikings in March.
Spotty Wi-Fi is a challenge when working out outdoors, but sheltering in place with his parents was by design: The nine-year veteran and his wife, Julie, now have plenty of reinforcements when it comes to taking care of their sons, Cooper, 2½, and Turner, 1.
"I kind of laugh when I talk about having two like I have 10," Cousins joked, "because compared to other guys in the league who have three, four, five, six kids, having two is not a big deal."
Dealing with this adversity has reaffirmed his commitment to his craft. It also taught him that the Public Broadcasting Service can be a football player's, as well as a father's, best friend: "'Daniel Tiger['s Neighborhood]' on PBS can be a lifesaver."
'Strict training mode' means living with trainers
The plan was to be in Nashville, Tennessee, for a month, but Demario Davis' offseason residence has become his permanent dwelling during the pandemic. His 7,500-square-foot house, purchased last offseason, is a saving grace of sorts, equipped with enough room for his wife, Tamela, and their four children under the age of 6.
And his two personal trainers.
Davis' trainers, Jose Tienda and Piankhi Gibson, typically work with him in two-to-three-week "strict training mode" spurts before heading back to their respective homes. They'll return to Nashville soon for another extended stay with Davis.
Peyton's Places
To celebrate 100 years of pro football, Peyton Manning travels the country to see the people and places that made the NFL the NFL. Watch on ESPN+ » More »
As the 31-year-old enters his ninth NFL season -- and the final year of his contract -- he is determined not to lose ground to a youngster who might be aiming for his spot.
Mid-morning acupuncture and soft tissue work with Tienda give way to afternoon aqua training in a neighbor's pool with Gibson. Davis pauses for dinner and to help put the kids to bed. But before long, he's headed back for more body work. He crawls into bed around 12:30 or 1 a.m. on those rigorous training days.
With Louisiana still reeling from 35,316 confirmed COVID-19 cases (and 2,485 reported deaths) as of Thursday, Davis wasn't surprised Saints coach Sean Payton -- who was the first known NFL figure to test positive for the coronavirus -- announced there would not be virtual workouts, meetings or workout sessions at the team facility.
"The virtual offseason really wouldn't have fit the flow of how we operate down there," the veteran linebacker said of the Saints, who have one of the oldest rosters in the NFL. "We don't have a young team. ... He knew with our experience level, the strong leaders we have at each position, that we'd get it done as far as training."
While Davis is eager to play, he said he won't waste time guessing when the season will start.
"The pandemic don't know nothing about football season. The virus ain't just like, 'Oh, football season's coming, let me chill out,'" he said with a laugh. "So I'm going to train and stay in shape because that's just a philosophy of mine -- you stay ready at all times. But I think it's a discredit to people who are on the front lines working, and the people who are being affected by it, when we're just thinking about how fast we can get back to sports."
'Grubby little gym' becomes labor of love
The police officers approached without warning.
Jamie Gillan had been punting on a turf field almost an hour away from his Tremont, Ohio, residence, completely unaware of the state's shelter-in-place orders. With nonessential businesses closed, the Browns punter -- nicknamed "The Scottish Hammer" -- had used local fields to practice his kicking drills. That is, until he was no longer allowed.
"[The officers] were like, 'Yeah man, we want to let you punt. We love the Browns and everything, but it's just the rules,'" the Scotland-born special-teamer explained in his thick brogue.
Faced with the prospect of quarantining alone, Gillan chose to go be with family.
He made trips to the liquor store and the supermarket -- packing his truck with several bottles of bourbon for his father, "120 eggs and 16 racks of bacon" -- and then he and his German shepherd named Bear traveled seven hours to southern Maryland to stay with his parents and 19-year-old sister.
Best of NFL Nation
• Darnold will benefit from Flacco and Gore • Cards lineman mentoring at ASU • Pats' CB adding safety to his skill set • Gilbert poised to emerge for Steelers • Ravens' Queen a hit despite inexperience
The rural area around his parents' house affords him space to practice his booming kicks, and there's a "massive" field, owned by a friend, which Gillan uses, too. But the self-described "workout junkie" had to get creative with strength training. Soon his parents' garage became his gym.
Unable to buy equipment online because of limited inventory and "skyrocketing" prices, Gillan purchased old equipment from a local high school: barbells, bumper plates, 40-, 80- and 100-pound dumbbells and bands. He purchased rubber matting from a local tractor store.
He searched Facebook Marketplace for a squat rack, but he and his father, Colin, who is a former rugby player and member of the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force, came up with a better solution -- they would construct their own.
"We came back [from Lowe's], cracked open some beers and just started building it," Gillan said with a chuckle. Even with old, rusty weights, his "grubby little gym" was everything he needed.
Gillan said his resourcefulness was forged during four years playing at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, a historically black university. During offseasons when he and his teammates didn't have access to the gym, their surroundings became their workout room. They bench-pressed and squatted logs, they did dips and pullups on metal bars at local parks, and Gillan hopped fences to punt on neighboring fields when access to their football field was prohibited.
"One thing I notice about a lot of historically black colleges is they're very underfunded," Gillan said, stressing that he and other student-athletes had to be creative. "Maybe it got me prepared for this weird period."
State-of-the-art amenities ease the transition
Blake Martinez's father, Marc, had a master plan: purchase a plot of land 15 minutes from the family home in Tucson, Arizona, and build a facility for his son to train and live. It didn't take long for the idea to become Martinez's reality.
The linebacker thanks his father every day for his ingenuity, as well as his construction company.
The 18,000-square-foot facility -- conceptualized and built last year -- "has everything a football player would need," said Martinez, a 2016 fourth-round draft pick by the Green Bay Packers who signed a three-year, $30 million free-agent contract with the Giants in March.

The warehouse-looking steel structure contains "a miniature version of a college weight room," a full-length basketball court, a 30-by-15-yard turf field and an outdoor sand volleyball court. It also doubles as a residence, with three bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen on the second level for him, his wife, Kristy, and their young daughter.
"It kept getting better and better as it kept getting built," Martinez said. He works out for two hours in person with his longtime trainer, Glenn Howell, four times a week.
But familiarity with his new franchise is a luxury Martinez, 26, doesn't have.
With New York and New Jersey being one of the epicenters of the coronavirus outbreak in the United States, Martinez doesn't know when he'll be able to travel to the facility or even meet members of the Giants organization for the first time.
"It's not like I've been on the team for a while and I know the guys already. So, it's been tough in that aspect, connecting with guys," he said.
Martinez said the pandemic has taught him "I literally have zero excuses not to show up the first day and make sure I'm 100 percent ready to go and help push all of the younger guys to that level if they haven't gotten there yet."
Making use of California canyons
Golden Tate's stunning San Diego views come at a price.
"I've just got to watch out for rattlesnakes," the Giants wide receiver said with a laugh.
When stay-at-home orders were issued in California in mid-March, Tate took advantage of his surroundings -- namely, the canyon his house is built on.
"It's not the best condition to be running in," admitted the 11-year NFL player, who mowed a 7-by-40-yard patch of grass on a steep incline. "But it'll suffice right now. It's better than doing nothing."
Team work makes the dream work! Uncle @tatethagreat & LoLo helping me get my daily catches in. Hope everyone has a great Friday! #FamilyFriday
20 people are talking about this
Tate, a married father of two small kids, purchased PowerBlock dumbbells and a Jugs machine from which he catches about 100 balls a day. He bikes at home on his Peloton and uses mountain bike trails for his aerobic conditioning. But finding a flat surface for route running has been a challenge. So, too, is self-discipline.
"Over my career, I'm so used to having someone -- an instructor or the guys around me -- push me. And right now, I'm forced to push myself," said Tate, who turns 32 on Aug. 2.
The veteran receiver played through the 2011 NFL lockout, but he said the coronavirus pandemic is unlike anything he has experienced.
"I feel bad for the first-, second-, third- and fourth-round guys who are expected to come in and help the team right away, but they're not having the same opportunity to grow as a player, not getting those reps on the field," he said.
"The offseason is when you have the time to really focus on the fundamentals of the game, the bigger picture and the details of the game. And it looks like right now we're going to show up for camp -- if we show up for camp -- in the middle of the fire of trying to figure out who's going to make the team and trying to get ready for a season. That can be overwhelming."
Strengths trainers turned investigators
With their players scattered across the country, NFL strength and conditioning coaches feel more like part-time sleuths and office managers than in-person trainers.
"We kind of went more into equipment sales and trying to be a liaison to help guys get set up and make sure they're doing the right thing," said Justus Galac, now in his seventh year as the New York Jets' head strength and conditioning coach. "What we found was, guys in the Southern states and more into the Midwest had more access than our guys in the Northeast and West Coast."
Amendola shows off his backyard workout
Danny Amendola impresses with some nifty, one-handed catches while working out with a helmet on in his backyard.
Strength trainers have been tasked with identifying what their players need from a performance standpoint to achieve their fitness goals, regardless of where they live and what resources they have access to. "Even though they might have access to a Steak 'n Shake parking lot or they might be in a third floor of an apartment," said Justin Lovett, the Los Angeles Rams' new head strength and conditioning coach.
Lovett was hired in the midst of California's coronavirus shutdown, but unlike during the 2011 lockout year, when he was on the Denver Broncos' staff, communication is permitted and has proved paramount. But there have been challenges.
"The biggest problem with the rookie class is they don't have the money that some of the older guys do," Galac said. "Not saying millions of dollars, but able to go buy equipment, pay for a trainer to take care of them, buying more food that you may normally not have to buy because the facility provides it. All those little things are adding up for these guys. And the rookies, they have no idea. And it's not their fault."
This time of year is crucial for strength staffs, not only for getting players in shape but also for getting new players up to speed with their programs. "And we've lost that," Galac said.
In fact, the Jets' weight room underwent a face-lift this offseason, complete with a new floor, turf accents and equipment. "And nobody's using it," Galac said. "It's sitting empty. The players haven't even seen it yet."
Finding space and serenity in the countryside
James Washington misses football. And, occasionally, his farm.
The 26-acre property the Steelers wide receiver purchased near his hometown of Abilene, Texas, made it easy for him to comply with social distancing rules. It also afforded him space to work out and keep in shape by way of chores. Washington, who was an agribusiness major with a concentration in farm and ranch management at Oklahoma State, finds the countryside calming. He enjoys the views of passing cars, wheat fields and cattle pastures during his eight- to 12-mile rides on his recently purchased bicycle.
His workout setup, which included an assortment of resistance bands sent by the Steelers and his high school dumbbells retrieved from his parents' house, was complete with the arrival of a Jugs machine, which he kept in the barn and carried to a flat area in one of the pastures.

However, staving off boredom is a challenge whenever he's in Pittsburgh, a more crowded city with fewer options for keeping busy.
"When I was in Texas, I'd work out, do my virtual [team] meetings and then I'd have to find something to do cause I can't just sit in the house," Washington said last week, after he, JuJu Smith-Schuster and fellow receiver Ryan Switzer worked out in quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's home weight room. "Being on the farm really helped me a lot, because there was always something that could have been done."
Washington loves his farm so much his recent stay in Pittsburgh was short-lived. He returned to Texas on Wednesday to celebrate Memorial Day weekend with family and tend to his most recent purchase: cattle. The time away from the Steelers' facility has also given Washington time to think.
"It just doesn't feel right," he said. "Everybody feels like we should be at the facility, doing physical stuff, getting ready to go. ... Even if there's no fans, we still have to go out there and just go 110 percent, even if it would feel weird. Fans help make the game. It's really crazy to think about.
"Just being away from things, you really find out how much you miss the sport. It sucks. That's really what I figured out. That I love football." Source - ESPN
