Tamil Nadu’s New U-19 Speedster R D Pranav Ragavendra Clocks 147 kmph, Eyes Accuracy Over Hype

In a cricketing nation always hungry for raw pace, Tamil Nadu’s 17-year-old R D Pranav Ragavendra has burst onto the scene with a fiery delivery that touched 147.3 kmph—the fastest recorded by an Indian U-19 bowler at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence.

But Pranav’s focus goes beyond the speed gun.

“I don’t want to be just about pace,” says the soft-spoken teenager from Chennai, who is part of India’s U-19 squad for the upcoming England tour starting June 27, where the team will play two Tests and five ODIs.

From Sprinter to Speedster

Interestingly, Pranav didn’t start out on a cricket pitch. His first love was sprinting, having clocked an impressive 13.76 seconds over 100 metres before turning 13. The shift to cricket came through unexpected circumstances.

“After we had our second child, Pranav became withdrawn,” says his father E Rajendran. “A doctor suggested we introduce him to team sports to help him adjust emotionally—and that’s how cricket entered his life.”

What began as therapy soon evolved into a passion. Once he picked up the red cherry, Pranav never looked back.

Rapid Rise Through the Ranks

At just 16, under the guidance of Australian great Glenn McGrath at the MRF Pace Foundation, Pranav had already touched 139 kmph. His progression since has been remarkable, and Tamil Nadu selectors took note, drafting him into the Ranji Trophy squad, where he played two matches last season.

“Speed comes naturally to him,” says M Senthilnathan, Head Coach of MRF Pace Foundation. “Now it’s about control, consistency, and injury prevention.”

Alongside Pranav, another Tamil Nadu quick, D Deepesh, is also showing promise with speeds above 140 kmph—offering the state hope for a revitalized pace attack.

Fast, But Focused on the Bigger Picture

Despite his blistering pace, Pranav remains grounded.

“I love speed and the thrill of bowling bouncers. But to keep doing it at the top level, I need accuracy. That’s why I don’t obsess over the speed gun,” he says.

With a smooth, open-chested action and an in-dipper as his stock delivery, Pranav is not just brute force—he’s also a student of the art of fast bowling.

The Cautionary Tale of Young Speedsters

India has seen several U-19 fast bowlers flame out due to injuries—Shivam Mavi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Umran Malik, and Mayank Yadav among them. That’s why experts are urging caution.

“We don’t want to repeat past mistakes,” says Ramji Srinivasan, India’s former strength and conditioning coach, who now oversees Pranav’s fitness regime. “He’s still growing. His core strength, diet, and recovery need careful planning.”

Taking cues from Australia’s management of Pat Cummins, Ramji says Pranav is being guided through a long-term athlete development program to ensure he peaks at the right time—and stays injury-free.

Tamil Nadu’s Fast-Bowling Future Looks Bright

In a state traditionally known for producing quality spinners, Pranav Ragavendra is refreshing change, injecting raw pace and ambition into Tamil Nadu’s cricketing narrative.

With the England tour on the horizon and his ability to rattle batters already proven, all eyes will be on the young Chennai lad as he aims not just to break the 150 kmph barrier—but to do so with discipline and durability.
