DM me for donations or use my askbox to request donations and I'm blocking you immediately, I have no 100% credible way of knowing whether you're a real, actual person or not at this point and being "vetted" doesn't even mean anything anymore because some fraudsters/scammers have managed to get themselves "vetted" in the past.
It sucks that bad people are trying to take advantage of innocent peoples's suffering by pretending to be victims of the war in Gaza when they aren't, but the existence of these scammers is an unfortunate reality and they've made it singlehandedly impossible to know whether I'm actually helping war victims with my money or simply funding a fraud operation by donating to anyone.
I am creating this post for the benefit of those select few Gazan Tumblr accounts which are legitimate, because if they've put effort into messaging me then I want them to know why I keep ignoring all messages related to donation requests.
PLEASE seek help from a known and properly funded charity organization instead of wasting valuable time and energy here, and please do so on a more secure website. Tumblr was never a good place to look for donations in the first place due to its high crime rate (we have so many scammers and bots, it's not even funny).
Q&A and FAQ:
Having a GoFundMe doesn't mean much and does nothing to prove legitimacy on it's own, several GoFundMes have been shut down in the past due to them being run by fraudsters. The fraudsters are BAD, guys. They really suck.
No, I do not run any charity campaigns myself, I've been DMed by someone asking about that in the past.

Internet scams are evolving every day. Criminals are looking for the mobile and computer market across the globe right now. Here are a few of the most well-known internet scams, and ways you can guard your wallet and personal information.

There are a variety of common types of COVID-19 frauds:
youtube
Fake health institutions. Fake health organizations are often used by scammers to claim to be experts, such as the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control(CDC) to make it possible for them offer treatments and tests or other COVID-19-related information.
Fake products are offered on websites. These websites sell fake items like hand sanitizers disinfectant wipes and facial masks. They don't provide. Purchase products from reputable manufacturers only.

Cybersecurity - Top Scams In 2020
Tumblr media
With the strength of cybersecurity nowadays, many scams and illegitimate online operations are stopped or blocked by our browsers. However, there are still some online scams out there that succeed in fooling the best cybersecurity measures. Such scams are very notorious and have the potential to steal any personal information or money by impersonating some huge firm.
For example, IRS and Techsupport scams have been booming for a long time and have no intention to stop anytime soon. They keep finding new ways to get past cybersecurity measures and dupe people. In such situations, it becomes very important to spread awareness so that people know what tactics are being used by the most notorious scams on the internet.
So, here are the top 3 most notorious scams in 2020:
The Covid-19 Scams
Of course, the only thing in a scammer’s mind even in the times of a pandemic is making money via illegal methods. From sending fake offers to asking for fake donations, scammers have yet again found a lot of ways to play with people’s minds and emotions to steal their money and private information.
You might receive emails, calls, or texts claiming to be from the government. They would be talking about Covid-19 checkups and alerts and will ask for your crucial information such as the SSN (Social Security Number). DON’T RESPOND TO SUCH THINGS.
You might receive information or offers about vaccinations or test kits. Ignore them as there is no official vaccination for Covid-19. Plus, only people with visible and repetitive symptoms are tested.
You might receive robocalls offering free Covid-19 tests
 avoid them at all costs.
You might receive emails from people impersonating WHO (World Health Organization) and spreading false or unconfirmed information about the virus. Please ignore such emails and only refer to WHO’s official website for any updates about the virus.
You might come across various pages asking for donations for many different causes during this pandemic. Don’t make any transactions on the pages that ask for donations via gift cards or wire transfer. Also, always research the information about a charity organization and make donations on official charity websites.
Most of these Covid-19 scams are focussed on stealing money and others are just focussed on spreading false information to mislead people. Beware of all of these scams in the time of this Covid-19 pandemic.
Tech Support Scams
Tech Support scams are one of the longest-running scams in the world. They mostly operate out of eastern countries and target people in countries such as the USA, Canada, UK, etc. The only thing they are after is money, for which they provide no legitimate services or support. One such scam operates under two names, “SNS Professional” and “ZNS Associates”. SNS Professional or ZNS Associates sends people fake virus alert messages and urges them to call on their number.
One victim stated “I am trying to find out if I have been scammed out of $399.99. The company name is "SNS Professionals or ZnS Associates". At the bottom of the receipt emailed to me is "Malwaribytes Corp, Microsoft Computer Software, Windows Defender, Lifetime Support $399.99". I feel I may be a victim of something I never thought I could be. I would appreciate if you would respond, Thank you in advance for your time”.
Sending robocalls to people saying that their Microsoft services have been expired and that they need to call on their number is another tactic used by many tech support scams including SNS Professional or ZNS Associates.
Ignore any pop-ups or robocalls claiming to be from Microsoft or any other reputed organization and repost those numbers as reputed organizations never call or send pop-ups to their customers.
Payroll Scams
Payroll Scams have boomed in recent times when more and more businesses require payroll software to keep track of their employees and their payouts. They pretend to be a legitimate payroll service providing company and they do provide payroll services, however, they do a little extra that helps only them. A fact that I came across was shocking. SNS Professional aka ZNS Associates don’t only run a tech support scam, they also operate a payroll scam.
ZNS Associates aka SNS Professional offers to provide payroll services to companies at reasonable rates. They do this as a cover-up for their payroll scam operation. The payroll scam process starts when people from SNS Professional and similar organizations receive a business’s employee information such as email IDs, names, salaries, etc.
They then send spoof emails (of employees) to the owners of the businesses and request for some change in their payroll information (bank account details, etc.). Moreover, ZNS Associates aka SNS Professional seems to be the biggest player in this game
just read what BBB alerts about ZNS Associates.
Beware of organizations that provide payroll services at attractive rates
they might be looking for something more and you might end up paying more than you need to without even knowing about it. It is advised to always refer to the official support line of the payroll software you use instead of consulting a third-party.

The Latest Mobile Scams & How To Stay Safe
Tumblr media
If the challenges of working from home, connecting with family, and keeping on top of the news have you grabbing your phone more than ever, you’re not alone. Unfortunately, scammers are capitalizing on this opportunity. From fake apps, and dangerous text messages to phishing phone calls, mobile scams are multiplying, potentially putting your personal data and devices at risk.
In fact, the Federal Trade Commission recently warned that they received a spike in user complaints as fraudsters look to take advantage of the current state of affairs. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to protect your privacy and security.
But first, here are a few things to watch out for:
Fake Apps
Looking for apps to help you track health information and find supplies? The scammers have you covered. They’ve released a number of malicious health-related apps designed to track you instead. These phoney apps may ask for access to your photos, files, and location, or use spyware that can remotely turn on your camera or microphone.
One dodgy app offers to help you locate N-95 masks, but don’t download it. If you do, the app locks your device and demands a ransom to unlock it. This just shows how common forms of attack, like ransomware, evolve with current events.
Another handful of phoney apps making the rounds appear to be for popular video conferencing platform Zoom, which has seen exponential growth as more people work from home. But installing these phoney apps can download malware instead, so make sure you go to the official company’s app.
Risky Text Messages
Phishing by text message, or “smishing,” continues to be a popular way to hook mobile users. The scammers are usually trying to get you to click on a link, which sends you to a risky website or downloads malware onto your device. We’ve seen recent smishing attempts asking to verify personal and banking information in order to “release” government stimulus funds or consolidate debt. Others attempt to sell you in-demand medical supplies at a discount, such as surgical masks, or fake health insurance.
Sometimes the senders will “spoof” a government or business phone number, so it appears to come from an official entity. Just remember that governments and banks will never contact you directly, asking for personal information or money.
Phishing Calls
With voice-over-internet technology making robocalls cheap and easy, the scammers can’t help but inundate us with new topical scams. We’ve seen reports of robocalls offering phony medical treatments or free test kits if you respond with your information. Others like
charity requests, such as one that appears to come from the World Health Organization, asking for a donation to an emergency relief fund.
How to Stay Safe
Scammers always try to take advantage of uncertainty and big news events that capture our attention. Here’s how to stay safe:
Be hyperaware when receiving any type of call or message
Always be suspicious of unsolicited calls, texts, social media messages, and e-mails. If you question the identity of the person, it is best not to interact at all. If a suspicious message appears to come from a friend, call them directly to see if their phone was hacked. Do not click on links or open attachments from anyone unless you’re sure the communication is authentic.
Never share your personal or financial data
Never give your personal and financial information over the phone or via text. If you are pressured to do so, go directly to the source.  Call the supposed institution asking for your information directly.
Be careful about which apps you download
Only download apps from reputable app stores and check the app’s reviews before purchasing.
Look into a spam blocker
Many phone carriers offer a service or app that helps identify and filter out spam calls. This can help greatly minimize those phishing calls.
Practice safe surfing & shopping through Mcafee Activate When surfing or shopping on your mobile device, go directly to the legitimate website or reputable app instead of clicking on links in messages. You can also avoid risky websites by having the Safe Web (safe browsing tool) turned on in McAfee Mobile Security.
Keep your devices secure and protected by Mcafee Activate
Keep your device protected with mobile security software. Products like McAfee Mobile Security perform regular scans to help protect you from malware and ensure that your apps are safe.

Donate to Charity Websites Safely
Charities can use charity websites either for building awareness to their cause, raising funds or both. Charity websites that accept online donations provide donors a quick and easy way to contribute to a cause. You can give directly to the website of a charity or through a third party that supports the cause of a charity.
When giving to charity websites, make sure to do some research first about the organization. Look for charity websites that state the charity’s mission and give specific details about its programs and achievements. In addition, check when was the last update on the site to ensure you are getting accurate and current information on charity websites.
You can also check if the organization has a charitable status or is a registered charity through the websites of the Internal Revenue Services, Better Business Bureau and other sites of charity watchdogs.
Avoid charity websites that do not post their contact information. You should have a way to contact the charity whether online or offline. If an organization is trustworthy, it will not hesitate to provide basic information such as physical address, email address, and phone number.
Online security is always a concern. Reputable charity websites realize the seriousness of the matter and make great efforts to protect the security of donors who give online. Charity websites utilize a technology that encrypts data before transmitting it into a secured server. Secure charity websites will either carry the logo of Verisign, the recognized leader in Internet Security or display a padlock icon at the bottom of their web pages. In addition, charity websites that starts with “https” instead of “http” are secure sites.
Another way to make sure charity websites will protect your personal information is to read their privacy policy. Find out how the charity will use your information or if they sell or share it with a third party.
Once you have made your donation, the charity will provide you with a notice to confirm their receipt of your donation. If they do not, you should contact them. Usually, the screen will display a confirmation message right after you have completed your online contribution. You may also receive an email notice from the charity. You can obtain a hard copy of this confirmation by printing the onscreen notice or email notice.
Charity websites are essential tools for charities today, saving money in fundraising and sending out their message to millions of Internet users. So, how do you give online with confidence? Choose reputable charity websites that utilize safety measures and use your common sense.

The Washington Shutdown, the Bible and Faithfulness
Tumblr media
Unlike Trump and the Government, the One True God Never Shuts Down
by Pastor Paul J. Bern
For a website view, click here :-)
It has happened again. Usually when the federal government shuts down, it's because Congress and the president can't pass a federal budget on time. This time around the shutdown is all about money all right, but never before has there been a shutdown inside the Beltway over a single item within the overall federal budget like there has been over president Trump's border wall. I have seen photos of the 4 “sample walls” president Trump has had constructed along side one another in the southern Arizona desert. You can't even see through them! Some drug cartel could be building a ramp or a ladder on the other side, and the Border Patrol wouldn't be able to see that until people were already coming over the top. This is idiotic!
OK, so let's all visualize this for a minute. Two Border Patrol agents of the USDHS hypothetically spot several men climbing over the top of president Trump's 'wall'. But when they apprehend them, 25 or 50 more come over the top right behind them. The only sure way to stop all those people at once would be to shoot to wound a few, in the hopes of causing the rest to stop where they are out of pure fear of being shot themselves. Unfortunately for the Border Patrol, not to mention any Christian worth his or her salt, they're not allowed to do that unless they are fired on first by one of the migrants. As you may know, that rarely if ever happens.
Moreover, if I were a Border Patrol agent, I wouldn't be able to hold on to that job for very long, because I simply refuse to shoot anyone who presents no danger to myself, nor to anyone else. And I sure as hell couldn't shoot at children, nor could I allow a single one to die while in my custody like ICE and the Border Patrol have. And yet this is exactly what our government is doing. They're murdering children, and this has either got to stop or the American people will be forced to rise up against their own government. In that event, anyone who refuses to rise up against such evil make themselves complicit in these crimes against humanity.
The other aspect to Trump's government shutdown has been the 800,000 US government employees who have been left without a paycheck. Worse yet, some of them are compelled by law to work without pay in such circumstances as this. Imagine what this means to these federal workers! Employees are required by law to work without pay during a government shutdown. That means they can be arrested for not showing up to work unexcused, and the same goes for even trying to quit. So, it is quite evident based on these rather ugly facts that the federal government is not a very nice employer at all. On further thought, it makes me wonder why anyone else would want to work there in the first place. For the “benefits”? I find no 'benefit' whatsoever in being potentially complicit in the slaughter of innocent children who pose no threat to me.
What this means from the employees' point of view is their own government – their employer – can't be trusted to pay them on time because Uncle Sam can't keep his house in order. And, it's all because the government (allegedly) doesn't have enough money to go around. Maybe if the Pentagon wasn't spending all those trillions of dollars in all those clandestine wars being fought overseas, there would be money for a border wall. And even then, we don't want a wall, all we really need is a tall fence. We need border security, granted, but a $5 billion solid concrete wall really is way over the top. A fence made of aluminum bars 16 to 20 feet tall with razor wire at the top could be built for a fraction of the $5 billion president Trump is currently demanding, and I'm sure Trump knows that. He's holding out to see how much he can squeeze out of Congress, but I doubt that the Lord approves of the way the president is going about it.
By laying off 800,000 people, while causing another 400,000 to work uncompensated, Trump has essentially taken the country's workers and management hostage in an effort to gain a political advantage. To sum this up, then, president Trump is being unfaithful to those the government employs, and by extension to the rest of America. The Bible has a lot to say about unfaithfulness. Faithfulness is considered to be a virtue, as the prophet and Psalmist David wrote in Psalms 117:2 – “For great is his love toward us, and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever.” In comparison, president Trump's faithfulness to pay his workers on time is conditional to his political demands being met. Now that it's been established that Mexico isn't going to pay for the wall at America's southern border, Trump is trying to force his employees to cover the tab instead. This has got to be the ultimate in unfairness in the workplace. Don't get me wrong, president Trump, I admire and respect some of the things you've done or are doing, such as your recent decision to pull out of Syria. But engineering a mass layoff for political advantage really is way too much.
Contrast the government shutdown to what God has said through his prophet David regarding this matter: “Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does.” (Psalm 145:13) Unlike president Trump, who has to run again in 2020 if he wants 4 more years – and if he wins at the ballot box – God never has to run for reelection. He has ruled and reigned for all eternity, and always will. Only once did 1/3 of the angels challenge his authority, everyone knows what happened to them. Moreover, God remains faithful to each one of us on a personal basis, as the apostle Paul wrote, “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.” (1 Corinth. 10:13) The word 'you' in this context meant the entire church at Corinth, but it was also meant individually to each member as well.
Again it is written in 1st Thessalonians 5:23-24, “23) May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24) The one who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.” As of this writing, with the partial federal shutdown firmly in place, Donald Trump is the last man on the face of the earth who could be called blameless at this point. Not only is he being unfaithful to his employees first, and his constituency second, he has put the entirety of his trustworthiness as Chief Executive into question. What has the Bible said about this? The apostle Paul wrote, “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” (1 Cor. 4:2) In its original context, the apostle Paul was writing about those in charge of churches being trustworthy people of good repute. These words were intended for what Paul called “bishops and overseers”. Interestingly enough, the titles 'pope', 'father' and 'pastor' aren't in the Bible anywhere, but that's another topic for another time.
Although I would be quick to agree that running a country's government is nothing at all like running a nonprofit, the person in charge of that charity – be it a church, a battered women's shelter, or whatever needs to be a faithful and trustworthy individual. This clearly extends to governments, which are supposed to be nonprofit entities but obviously are not (such as $21 trillion missing from the Pentagon, etc). One of the things that define faithfulness is those in charge being faithful to the positions they have been entrusted with by the electorate. This means, among other things, paying your employees on time. So this part of my weekly message is primarily directed at president Trump, but the shutdown in Washington is not all Trump's fault. The rest of the blame lands squarely in the laps of Congress, who have yet to show any willingness whatsoever to negotiate with president Trump in good faith. As of this writing, no such thing has happened, and the government will probably remain shuttered until after the first of the year. While resolve abounds in Washington DC, faithfulness is sorely lacking. Let everyone involved from the president on down get this country running again ASAP, and let's put an end to all this pointless posturing – on both sides!

SearchLove Boston 2018: The Great Big Round Up
On June 7th and 8th, we made our annual return to Boston for our east coast edition of SearchLove. This year’s conference moved to a brand new venue, the newly refurbished Revere hotel, situated in the heart of downtown Boston, just a stone throw from Boston Common. 200 attendees, 15 speakers from across the globe, an endless amount of coffee consumed, all on a single track stage.
2 days of SEO full immersion ⁊@mocainteractive⁩ ⁊@distilled⁩ #searchlove pic.twitter.com/TIRdnyq8kH
— Caterina Girbu (@Caterina_girbu) June 7, 2018
This post is a quick-fire summary of the knowledge our speakers had to share plus their slides. Their whole sessions will be available with a DistilledU membership in a couple of weeks' time. And if you enjoyed all of that you can sign up for reminders to join us next year!
Will Critchlow - ‘From the Horse’s Mouth: What We Can Learn from Google’s Own Words’
Early web spam was fine as long as it didn’t make Google look stupid by flooding the SERPs with low-quality sites. As this spiralled out of control, this forced Google to produce more complex algorithms to protect their reputation.
Adsense is one of the most underrated things Google has ever done. It incentivised the creation of a vast amount of long-tail content, but it also created the monster that eventually required Panda to fix it.
Where is Google going next? Given their recent purchases, Google is (most likely) coming for the cloud computing space.
Facebook is going through many of the learning curves that Google has already experienced, e.g. content spam/fake news.

Ruth Burr Reedy - ‘Scaling JSON-LD Using Google Tag Manager’
Google doesn’t always pull knowledge panel information from your website.
Both Google and Bing have a very clear understanding of markup implemented using JSON-LD, and it is now their preferred method of implementation.
Structured data is a massive driver of voice search.
The best part about doing schema markup with JSON-LD is that you can do it with Google Tag Manager and NEVER BOTHER A DEVELOPER@ruthburr #searchlove

Samantha Noble - ‘Beyond the Reach of Keyword Targeting: The Evolution of Paid Media’
Organic clicks are continuing to shift to paid ads.
The number of ad extensions has increased significantly, and they can be used in combination with each other improving CTR, quality score and taking up more space in the SERPs. Naming a few we now have:
site links
structured snippets
call/message
location
affiliate location
price (even if it's free you can put $0)
app
review
promotion
previous visits
seller/consumer ratings
Most search queries now contain four ads at the top of the SERP. But we are now beginning to see four ads at the foot of the SERP as well.
We should be thinking about what Google will monetise next. Google Shopping was previously free; now it is only pay to play.
79% of adults online use Facebook. The amount of data Facebook has on us is incredible and allows impressive levels of targeting.
Facebook made $40.5 billion in 2017.

Ryan Charles - ‘Newsjacking: How To Add to the Story and Earn Big Links in Real Time’

8 in 10 Americans Are Concerned about the Ability of Businesses to Safeguard Their Financial and Personal Information: AICPA Survey
Check out the latest post https://thenewsrabbit.com/8-in-10-americans-are-concerned-about-the-ability-of-businesses-to-safeguard-their-financial-and-personal-information-aicpa-survey/
NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Another day, another data breach. Recent news about cybercriminals obtaining more than 5 million credit card numbers from high-end U.S. retailers joined a series of major hacks and online data breaches. In 2017 alone, roughly 143 million U.S. adults, were hit by some form of malware, virus, spyware or phishing scam. Unfortunately, the frequency of attacks on Americans’ personal information has fostered a feeling of inevitability. In fact, according to results released today from a telephone survey conducted by The Harris Poll for the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) of 1,006 Americans adults in the fall of 2017, nearly half of U.S. adults (48 percent) think it is at least somewhat likely identity theft will cause them financial loss in the next year.
“Protecting your information is an ongoing process that requires you to be vigilant, identify where you can improve and take action to firm up your safeguards,” said Gregory Anton, CPA, CGMA, chair of the AICPA’s National CPA Financial Literacy Commission. “This means regularly monitoring your credit card and bank statement and periodically checking your credit report for anything that looks out of the ordinary.”
While the survey finds that three out of five Americans (61 percent) have at least looked at their credit report, more than a third (35 percent) have never once checked. This is particularly alarming, as a majority of those who have checked their credit (66 percent) had to take steps with a credit reporting agency to correct inaccuracies, with the average being 13 specific corrections among those who have taken steps at least once. More distressing, those with a household income of less than $35K were found to be more likely to never have looked at their credit report than those with a household income of $100K+ (44 percent vs. 30 percent).
“Having a good credit score and access to favorable interest rates is something that benefits people of all income brackets, but it is particularly important for those who are in a financial situation where a few percentage points in interest would make a big impact on their financial wellbeing,” added Anton. “Everyone should check their credit score for free with one of the three major credit reporting agencies at least once a year and not wait until suspicious activity occurs.”
The frequency and scope of these cyber-attacks has many Americans questioning the effectiveness of cybersecurity practices businesses currently have in place. In fact, eight in ten Americans (81 percent) said they are at least somewhat concerned about the ability of businesses to safeguard their financial and personal information, with two in five (40 percent) reporting that they are extremely or very concerned.
With security breaches costing U.S. consumers $19.4 billion of their own money, this may be a cause for action. The survey found four in five Americans (81 percent) said they’ve changed their behavior based on the threat of cyber breaches affecting credit card and debit card processing systems. Those changes include a majority increasing self-monitoring of credit and debit card accounts for fraudulent activity (56 percent), while about 4 in 10 are either using cash and/or checks more often (43 percent) or choosing to shop at locally owned stores more often instead of national retailers (40 percent).
“While it’s positive that American are taking steps to mitigate the risk from cyber breaches, each time there is a new breach in the headlines there is the risk that the public becomes numb,” added Anton. “Identity theft may seem like it’s inevitable, but our message is that it doesn’t have to be.”
A quarter of Americans (26 percent) said they have reduced their online presence, either turning off social media or visiting fewer websites because of concerns about data security. One in five (20 percent) have signed up for additional fraud detection or credit monitoring. Roughly 1 in 10 report they are switching their shopping to different national stores because of concern about data breaches (11 percent), placing a freeze on their credit (11 percent), or shopping online more often, because they feel like it is safer (11 percent). Five percent said they use alternative forms of currency.
Additional Findings – Victims of Scams:
The survey found that three in five U.S. adults (60 percent) report that they or an immediate family member have ever been the victim of a scheme to defraud them, including:
34 percent — A letter, email or phone call from someone impersonating the IRS
28 percent — Theft of an existing credit card number
26 percent — A fraudulent email phishing scam
18 percent — Solicited for donations for a fraudulent disaster relief charity
11 percent — Opening a new line of credit in your or their name
10 percent — A ponzi or pyramid scheme
6 percent — Someone obtaining a tax refund in your or their name
The AICPA’s National CPA Financial Literacy Commission offers the following tips to help Americans prevent and mitigate the effects of identity theft:
Monitor your credit report & set protections. You can request a free credit report from all three major credit reporting agencies once a year, including TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. Additionally, some monitoring services allow you unlimited access to your credit information year-round. These services are there to help you spot inaccuracies, potential fraud and more on your credit report. This should also be done for children. Theft of a child’s ID may go undetected for many years such that by the time they are adults, the damage has already been done.
Don’t provide your Social Security number unless it’s necessary. A space for it on a form doesn’t necessarily mean that it is required. For example, your doctor’s office may use a unique number issued by your insurance company to enter your claim but their form may have a space for SSN anyway. Don’t be afraid to ask if they really need it.
Make sure your Wi-Fi network at home is secured with a password. A skilled data thief can access information on an unsecured network. Additionally, when away from home, avoid providing credit card or other personal information on unsecured Wi-Fi networks like those in airports or coffee shops.
Don’t provide personal information in response to any unsolicited communication. Even if the caller, text or email claims to be from a bank or credit card company needing to “verify” your account to “prevent fraud.” If in doubt, call the number on your bank statement or the back of your credit card.
What to do if it happens? Act quickly to limit the damage. Call your credit card company and report it to them. They will close your card and issue a new one. File a police report to ensure that you are covered for any damages that you may incur. If your Federal return is affected, call the IRS 800-908-4490 and file Form 14039 Identity Theft Affidavit.
For more information about what to do in the event of identity theft, 360 Degrees of Financial Literacy offers tips here.
Survey Methodology
This survey was conducted by The Harris Poll by telephone within the United States between October 12 and 15, 2017, among 1,006 adults (503 men and 503 women aged 18 and over) including 506 interviews from the landline sample and 500 interviews from the cell phone sample. Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region and household income were weighted (using data from the Current Population Survey) where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population.

Practice safe surfing & shopping through Mcafee ActivateWhen surfing or shopping on your mobile device, go directly to the legitimate website or reputable app instead of clicking on links in messages.
