🔹Test Design: Four large, fully charged battery enclosures are arranged back-to-back and side-by-side, closely mimicking real site layouts.
🔹Extreme Conditions: In recent tests, a single unit was intentionally ignited and burned at over 1000°C for more than 48 hours-without fire spreading to adjacent units.
🔹Active Fire Protection: Systems like CLOU’s Aqua C2.5 employ active cell sensing and electric shutter explosion suppression, which can isolate thermal runaway to within 140mm, even in worst-case scenarios.
🔹Thermal Barriers & Structural Integrity: Enhanced fire-resistant materials and compartmentalization kept neighboring units below 40°C, and structural integrity was maintained throughout the burn.

On 5 September 2023, teams from France’s space agency CNES and Arianegroup under the lead of ESA carried out a complete Ariane 6 launch sequence on its launch pad at Europe’s spaceport in French Guiana. The test ended with a hot-fire of the launcher’s core stage and startup of the Vulcain 2.1 engine. This is a key step in the test campaign. It follows from initial integration of the Ariane 6 launcher on its launch pad, electrical and fluid system tests and the first launch sequence test run on 18 July 2023. This test involved a launch sequence and final countdown representative of a launch, including removal of the Ariane 6 mobile gantry and filling the launcher’s upper and core stage tanks with liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. The test ended with the ignition and the startup of the core stage’s Vulcain 2.1 engine, followed by four seconds of firing. The next milestone is to complete a core stage long hot-fire test, where the Vulcain 2.1 engine will operate for about 8 minutes. Ariane 6 is an all-new design, created to succeed Ariane 5 as Europe's heavy-lift launch system. With Ariane 6's upper stage and its reignitable Vinci engine, Europe's launch capability will be tailored to the needs of multiple payloads, for example to orbit satellite constellations. This autonomous capability to reach Earth orbit and deep space supports Europe's navigation, Earth observation, scientific and security programmes. Throughout the test, the test specimen is exposed to flame, and the combustion chamber effectively traps most of the smoke. Under active flame circumstances, a specimen of 25 mm x 25 mm x 6 mm is burned in the test chamber using a propane burner that is running at a pressure of 276 kPa (40 psi). A light source, photoelectric cell, and metre are installed in the 300mm x 300mm x 790mm test chamber to evaluate light absorption horizontally across the flammability.
Furniture and Mattresses' Flammability
Testing the flammability of mattresses and furniture is crucial for assuring consumer fire safety. The measurement of heat release, smoke release and opacity, combustive gas release, and total mass loss during these flammability tests is done in a burn room. In this kind of flammability test, mattresses or furniture are set ablaze using a lighted cigarette or a sizable open flame to see how they would do in both accidental and deliberate flames.Any flame front that forms after lighting is observed, and the movement of the flame front horizontally along the length of the specimen is recorded in terms of how long it takes to reach different lengths.
• The findings are presented in terms of the flame spread history in terms of distance and time, the flame front velocity in terms of heat flux, the critical heat flux at extinguishment, and the average heat for prolonged burning.
Reports of flammability testing carried out by independent third parties in flammability testing labs are typically used to demonstrate compliance with these criteria. The intended purpose of a product must also be clearly stated on any warning labels that are prescribed by jurisdictions. If these conditions are not met, market access may be denied or regulatory authorities may take enforcement action.
