I cried so much at today's episode of frieren. It's not even the most emotional or sad episode, but for some reason it just resonated a lot. The fact that a simple spell, not meant to show power or to be used in a fight, a spell to create a field of flowers, that was loved by flamme and passed down to frieren, that simple spell brought frieren and himmel together and for that reason it remains frieren's favorite spell. Frieren is a mage of peaceful times and no matter how strong and powerful we've seen her be in the past few episodes, the anime makes sure to remind us that this story is not about that, this story is about connection and kindness and an act as simple as creating a field of flowers is shown as a greater feat than defeating the Demon King.

Sousou no frieren spends quite a bit of time making a point of explaining why frieren's favorite spell is the flower spell and juxtaposing it with serie's contempt for it. It's a very telling moment for each character. Frieren's love of flowers is both simple and complex; she loves them because it makes people feel better.
The flower spell was passed onto Frieren by Flamme the legendary mage, who loved the flowers for their beauty. Out of the countless legendary spells Flamme knew, she loved the seemingly trivial spell to make a field of flowers. Despite her hatred of demons. Despite her life's work being dedicated to war and eradication. The most important spell she passed in wasn't a combat spell, it was flowers. Frieren adopted this spell to honor her memory, and wherever she goes she carries a piece of her old mentor with her, even as Flame fades into myth. It's safe to say Frieren would not have been the same mage without it.
Frieren carried this spell for a thousand years, and used it again when she met Himmel. It was surely a formative experience for him. Here he was, a scared little boy alone in a dark forest meeting a beautiful elven woman, and her highest priority first and foremost was comforting him. Of all the things she could have done, the first is comforting him with a field of flowers. It was clearly an impactful moment for him because he remembered it so vividly years later. One may think that Himmel, whose top priority is always the happiness of the villages he visits, wouldn't have been the same hero without it. Not only that, it was the one reason why he had chosen frieren to join his party.
The flower spell is responsible for half the members of the hero's party, and the hero's party is responsible for killing the demon king, which was surely a fraught, desperate battle. Who knows if any other group was capable of what Himmel and his party achieved, but regardless, it was the flower spell that brought them together. It was the flower spell that made them who they are. The flowers are shown to have real, tangible utility. What does Serie think of all this? The flower spell is useless. It's meaningless. She simply doesn't understand.
Serie is similarly baffled and enraged when Fern, who is very much Frieren's student, asks Serie for a laundry spell of all things. Serie could never understand the utility and comfort of a cleaning spell. But how much of Fern's life has spent on laundry? How time and happiness has Fern gained from learning a laundry spell? How could someone as detached from earthly needs such as Serie understand? It really begs the question of what Serie does consider to be a useful spell. What is her most "useful" spell? It's a not a question the anime answers directly, but I doubt Serie would have batted an eye of Fern asked for a combat spell. The Continental Magic Association, the organization that Serie founded, only allows the deadliest mages in the highest ranks. We've seen how dangerous the first class rank tests were, and we've seen that every first class mage before that point had been a master of killing. Serie's idea of a useful spell is one that can kill. And that is why Frieren and Serie hate each other so much.
Serie is a mage of war, and Frieren is a mage of peace. They could never understand each other. Could Serie have defeated the demon king? Surely. But she wouldn't have stopped to tend to the needs of the people she found along the way; she wouldn't have been Himmel. Every day those people would wear smelly clothes and come home to gardens of mud, and Serie could never understand.
