Remembering Camaligan River Park Before Pandemic

A lot of things changed since pandemic happened. We are like this for a year now and coped up with the new normal. I happen to visit Camaligan River Park just recently because of fieldwork. It is actually currently temprarily closed in complaiance with the MIATF (Municipal Interagency Task Force) Guidelines since there was an increase in COVID-19 cases not just in the municipality but also in Naga City, a neighboring city so close to Camaligan.  

Recently, Camaligan River Park is looking quiet, empty and sad. I missed how it used to be here. It used to be lively even in the afternoon. Seeing this and I am just nostalgic. I sat down and started to reminsce. Looking back at the last time I was there, it was in 2019 also because of fieldwork. It felt like a long time ago since my last visit. I can remember going there at around 4pm and you could already see how people are flocking to the river park as they waited for the sunset and the floating restaurant to pass by the river. 

I can also remember the smell and taste of various street foods being cooked there too. Locals in the municipality might have been there for a stop by to meet up with family or friends or a lover. It was park for all walks of life. No hanging bridge by that time yet. The floating restaurant which is part of the Camaligan River Cruise, was the main attraction at the river park.

Now that the hanging bridge connecting Camaligan and Gainza was constructed, (more of reconstructed since the first one got washed away because of Super Typhoon Rolly), it became another attraction especially for the millennials hungry for an Instagram worthy photo op. I also heard that new attraction will be added soon like a romantic boat ride river cruise. Furthermore, I remember the live bands serenading people at the wharf and how romantic the night is because of the lights.  

We all have different reasons for visiting and probably stories to tell because of the memories we created at the river park but one thing is for sure, we all yearn to go back to normal to be able to visit here and bring life to it.

Camaligan is the smallest municipality yet the densest in Camarines Sur. It is also among the municipalities that is very rich in history. It is one of its characteristics why it is such a good place for cultural heritage tourism. It is known as Bicol Region’s oldest known pre-colonial archaeological site and it being located near the Bicol River, the people of Camaligan has gained their socio-cultural identity as river people and traders during pre-colonialism. Perhaps when this pandemic is over, we can further explore what the municipality can offer for tourism development. For the meantime, let’s all stay safe at home and be healthy. Travel responsibly if you are going to visit and always follow the health safety protocols.

The La Grande Hermine.. Looking like some crashed and forgotten pirate’s galleon, Ontario’s wreck of the Grande Hermine floating restaurant is actually a dilapidated replica of an earlier ship.  The original Grande Hermine was a three-masted sailing vessel from the 1500s. While the original did not survive into the modern day, a replica was built for Montreal’s 1967 Expo event. This version of the ship was not meant for transportation, but rather it was built as a gimmicky floating restaurant. Once the fair ended, the floating eatery was put on permanent display in an Ontario City park.
