lol, lemme preface this by telling you what i know about the show from my out-of-context insta-viewing:

kabir sends his gf riddhima in to spy on vansh RAISINGHANIA (naam ka wazan check karein ji. kaafi hi bhaari-bharkam, just like the fake baritone the actor playing the character is being forced to put on.) vansh is some kinda shady, but idk WHAT SPECIFIC KIND of shady..... like is he just your garden-variety-evil-capitalist-ala-ambani-bezos, or is he into shit like drug smuggling and human/organ trafficking???? no one knows. maybe a little bit of both. but kabir’s a COP, and we all know that those fuckers are the shadiest shits around (#ACAB) so yeah, true to type, kabir shadyyyyyyyy. he’s actually the secret illegitimate son of vansh’s stepmom and together they wanna ruin vansh and take all his monies. so anyway, kabir sends in riddhima, who’s just a whole special brand of dumbass, but also extraordinarily determined in the way only tellywood heroines are. so she’s basically sticking her nose everywhere that doesn’t belong and being a pain in the ass of literally everyone in the show, including her own (coz she seems to get injured in novel and entertaining ways in every second episode.) kabir ultimately manipulates her into marrying vansh, while vansh has apparently married her KNOWING that she’s a spy and is probably playing the long game to see who her puppet-master is. long story short, heterosexuality is too potent a force and the Stupid Spy Girl and Gangsta Guy are currently slowly giving in to the Feelz™, despite missing that one-little-teensy-weensy-who-even-needs-it-in-a-real-relationship thing. y’know, that little thing called, idk, i think it’s called “TRUST” or some such strange unheard-of concept.

oh, in between all this there’s also some bizarre plot about some ex of vansh’s called ragini, who’s dead??? missing? idk. kabir is real interested in that and wants to jail vansh for it, but we’ve long forgotten about ragini by this point #RIPSis anyway, there’s some kinda statue of her’s in the attic or some shit, coz vansh is some kinda modern day gender-reversed medusa who turns women who cross him into statues??? idk man, idk. so riddhima is pretty much in constant danger of being statue-d.

also vansh has a requisite irritating famiy in tow, that he’s burdened with being in charge of (coz no rest for the unfortunate eldest son who lives in this godforksaken mansion, be that an oberoi or a raisinghania) feat: a dadi who is well-meaning, but as annoying as the one in IB was, constantly spouting platitudes about how vansh and Spy Girl trooooooly lurrrrrrrrrrve each other *kissy noises*; some chachi/chacha who are all “HEY WHY DOES HE GET TO BE THE BOSS, WE WANT CONTROL OF THE CRORE-ON KA BIJNESS TOO”, some very fake kanji-eyed siblings/cousins who are supreme bitches, and ofc one (1) normal sibling who is sweet but really does nothing around here. oh and there’s his right hand man/bff too, who seems to be not 100% (maybe just 83%?) incompetent like everyone else. that poor sod just got suckered into marrying Kanji Aankhon Waali Bitch Sister, who is pregnant with some total rando’s baby, and is just an all-round asshole to Riddhima/Right Hand Man, because “ugh, yeh do kaudi ke middle class naukar log, cheeeeee.”

Following an infructuous spell of looking east, India’s Act East Policy (AEP) is hobbled by snags in connectivity, continuing insurgencies, agitations, blockades and extortion in the North-east and replication of some of these very problems, especially insurgencies and snarls, in decision-making in Myanmar, the launchpad and fulcrum of AEP. Last month, the visit of Myanmar President, U Win Myint, to India reminded us of AEP anew.

The open-door policy is intended to usher in development in the North-east, which could in turn facilitate the closure of insurgencies. For the Look East Policy to work, it was necessary to press the “pause” button on democracy and, instead, support the ruling military junta. Reversion to democracy, albeit partial, has been achieved as I discovered last month in Yangon through a joint civil military leadership, with the Army having the last word.

At the core of AEP is connectivity — by road, rail, sea, inland waterways and air. The strategic geography in the North-east channelises this outreach through the narrow and sensitive Siliguri corridor, the vulnerable chicken’s neck of the region. Choices for bypassing the Siliguri constriction were to transit through Bangladesh and/or use the sea route to reach insurgency-free Mizoram on the Myanmar border — from Kolkata to Sittwe Port in Myanmar and upto Mizoram.

Earlier, Bangladesh had rejected Indian requests to connect Myanmar through the Port of Chittagong upto Agartala and thence to the Myanmar border. What is being operationalised now is the costly and delayed Kaladan multi-modal access from Sittwe to Myanmar/Mizoram through Rakhine and Chin States, currently beset with insurgencies by the Arakam Army. Therefore, instead of working this project south-north, it has been reversed, starting from Mizoram to Sittwe, which will have a 1,000 km special economic zone (SEZ) and a gas land pipeline from its gasfields to Gaya in Bihar. A number of roads to and through Myanmar to the east are under construction and completion, thus enhancing the AEP connectivity grid.

Unique to Myanmar is the civil-Army joint leadership arrangement under an Army-dictated constitution of 2011, which ensures that 25 per cent of the elected seats in Parliament is reserved for the Army. As the Constitution forbids Myanmar’s popular leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi of the National League of Democracy (NLD) from holding office, she is a State Councillor in the improvised system, which allows her the number three position in the State hierarchy after the President and Vice President; whereas the “C” in C Senior General Aung Hlaing, who calls the shots, is at number five. The Constitution reserves the posts of defence, home and border affairs Ministers for the Army.

The NLD wants to change the Constitution, which requires an unachievable two-thirds majority in Parliament. Last week, State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi unsuccessfully tried to pass the Constitutional amendment. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing is in his second term, which will end in April 2021, and efforts are on to accommodate him as the Vice President. This may introduce a modicum of civilian control over the military. While the Army is popular in the countryside, it is disliked by the urban elite. It disapproves of the overwhelming Chinese presence and meddling in Myanmar’s internal affairs. But others don’t mind them as they have the money to invest and develop the country.

Another historical challenge facing Myanmar is its myriad insurgencies, which like the cluster on the Indian side, is a hurdle for AEP. At the time of independence, many States in the erstwhile Burma had sought self-determination and separation but the Panglong Agreement of 1947 promised to settle Centre-State relations even as the Communists and Karens favoured independence. Today, there are more than two dozen active and dormant insurgencies, the active ones in border States like Shan, Kachin, Chin and Rakhine. The world’s most complex but elaborate peace process is in Myanmar and it consists of unilateral, bilateral and a nationwide cease fire agreements, prone to violations and formal and informal dialogues backed by the international community, prominently by China.

The year 2019 was bad for the peace process. The 21st century Panglong Union Peace Conference with 10 nation-wide ceasefire signatories and the high-level Joint Implementation Coordination Meeting could not be held, though the Union Peace Dialogue took place in July. Both the failed meetings are likely to be held after the national elections later this year, which the Lady — reference to NLD leader Daw Suu Kyi — is expected to win but with a reduced majority. For various reasons, her popularity has waned but there is no alternative leader.

Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Myanmar this January and signed 33 agreements, of which the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (like the economic corridors with Pakistan and Nepal) was the centre piece. All three strategic corridors seek access to markets but two have an eye on warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Surpassing India’s port potential at Sittwe is Kyakpyu, the deep-water port coupled with SEZ and ultimately road, rail, oil and gas pipelines radiating through Myanmar north of China’s Yunnan province. China’s footprint is enormous: There are hordes of Chinese in the north. Though the controversial $3.6 billion hydel dam at Myitsone has been put on hold, bilateral trade stands at $17 billion and China holds 40 per cent of Myanmar’s foreign debt of $5 billion. Xi signed separate agreements with the Senior General and State Councillor while hailing the new blueprint for comprehensive strategic cooperation and the new 2+2 strategic dialogue, Myanmar’s first with any country.

India, though with good intentions and now sizeable civil and defence cooperation, is no match for China’s deep pockets and outreach to play the role of a regional equaliser. Still, its impressive infrastructure and capacity-building programmes have been appreciated.

Japan will team up in improving quality and quick delivery of projects. While the two million, mostly Indian Tamil, diaspora is no asset, the Buddhism connect has not been tested even as Indian tourists are thronging Myanmar. India has transferred a Russian kilo-class diesel-electric attack submarine and may soon sell Brahmos missiles against the $1.5 billion line of credit, of which $300 million is left. Border trade — within 16 km — is a paltry $25 million, though overall trade is around $2.5 billion, far below potential.

The flowering of bilateral relations is stalled in part by the complexity of joint leadership and the unstoppable rise of China. Tidak berlebih tapi jangan sampai meninggalkan barang yang benar-benar penting. Pas susunya, eh maksud saya pas packingnya. Praktis, nyaman, dan penuh gaya.

Baju yang masih bersih ga usa tiap hari ganti, cukup diangin-anginin biar ba mambu. Lagian dingin ga terlalu berkeringat. Semprot perfume bila perlu. Sendal Jepit buat keluar masuk kamar hotel. Kaos Kaki dan Sepatu Ultraboost yang nyaman dipakai berjalan jauh.

Toiletries

Sabun, Shampoo, Sikat Gigi, Odol, Deodorant, Perfume, Tissue Basah. Satukan perlengkapan mandi kedalam satu wadah, biar gampang nyarinya. Musim semi di Melbourne masih lumayan dingin berkisar antara 9-17° C bawa Lip Balm dan Body Lotion biar kulit ga kering. Terutama bibir dan tubuh jomblo yang jarang merasakan sentuhan, tingkat kekeringannya akan bertambah parah. Masukkan peralatan mandi dan beberapa bahan yang mengandung cairan kedalam kantong plastik transparan, atau ziplock bags transparan. Kalo ga pake bagasi, bahan cair yang boleh masuk ke kabin per wadahnya nya tidak boleh lebih dari 100ml.

Gadget

Camera, Tripod, Charger iPhone, Universal Travel adaptor – Colokan listrik di Australia memiliki dua pin logam pipih yang berbentuk huruf ‘V’ dan beberapa ada ground nya alias pin datar ketiga di tengah. Lebih baik beli travel adaptor di Indonesia. Di Aussie saya lihat harganya mahal-mahal sampe Rp. 100,000. Sementara beli di negara kita cuma sekitar Rp. 40,000.

Obat-obatan

3 obat penting yang selalu saya bawa adalah Obat flu – Stop Cold, Obat mabok – Antimo, Obat Mencret – Huang Lian Su. Tak lupa Multivitamin dan Tolak angin agar tetap sehat dan setrooongg. Pasak bumi bila perlu, kalo kamu sedang honeymoon.

Di pagi yang setengah melek, saya sudah nangkring di Flinders Street Station untuk naik kereta ke Brighton Beach. Pantai ikonik di Melbourne yang dapat dicapai dalam 40 menit perjalanan. Letaknya yang ga jauh dari pusat kota, membuat pantai ini selalu padat dikunjungi turis.

Beruntung saya tiba di pagi hari, di tengah pantai yang masih sangat sepi pi pi! Saya pun bisa bebas foto-foto dan menikmati suasana dengan tenang layaknya pemilik pantai. Mungkin juga karena saat itu masih musim semi, banyak orang yang males ke pantai karena cuaca nya masih sangat dingin. Berjemur di atas pasir dengan bikini di tengah suhu 10 derajat Celcius, bukanlah ide yang bagus. Lain cerita kalo kamu beruang kutub.

Annyeong, Beach! Sesampainya disini, saya berjalan santai di sepanjang garis pantai. Berjalan cool layaknya Rangga di film AADC. Setelah cuma bisa lihat di Instagram, akhirnya saya menyaksikan sendiri pemandangan dramatis dari rumah-rumah kecil warna-warni berjejer di hamparan pasir putih. Langit pagi itu terlihat begitu sempurna. Saya berdiri diterpa angin laut, menghadap pantai berlatarkan bukit hijau yang bersih dan tenang. Air laut nya yang berwarna biru dan tidak berombak seakan menyatu dengan langit. Hanya dengan memandangnya, saya merasakan kedamaian jiwa. Sepoi-sepoi bahagia. Mungkin ini yang dinamakan Vitamin Sea!

Sesuai dengan namanya, rumah yang terbuat dari kayu dan papan beratapkan seng ini dulunya berfungsi sebagai kamar buat mandi dan ganti baju bagi pengunjung. Rumah dengan desain Victoria Klasik ini sekarang beralih fungsi menjadi tempat menyimpan peralatan pantai seperti papan surf. Dan tentunya, menjadi tempat berteduh dan foto narsis buat kita para pencari love di Instagram.

Dalam perjalanan kembali ke stasiun, saya melihat rumah-rumah mewah di pinggir jalan. Tak heran, Brighton merupakan kawasan perumahan bagi orang-orang kaya di Melbourne. Rumahnya yang cantik nan asri sukses bikin saya iri. Tamannya yang dihiasi bunga-bunga cantik, garasi berisikan Lamborghini, ah rumah impian banget. Keluar dari stasiun, jalan setapak yang indah mengantarkan saya ke Bossy Boots Cafe. Tempat favorit warga lokal nongki ini tidak terlalu besar, seperti ruang tamu keluarga yang berisi sofa panjang, kursi kayu dan meja-meja kecil yang tertata rapi. Jendela kacanya yang besar membuat matahari masuk ke dalam ruangan. Pencahayaan alami ditambah lampu warm white dan desain chic minimalis membuat suasananya terasa nyaman. Di halaman nya terdapat kursi untuk kamu duduk menikmati pemandangan dan udara segar Brighton.

Saya pun memesan Lasagna seharga 14.50 AUD | Rp. 155,000 dan Chai Latte 4.3 AUD | Rp. 46,000. Tuna Nicoise dan Moroccan Cous Cous Salad juga santapan favorit warga lokal. Minumannya ada banyak, mulai dari coffee and tea, juice and smoothies, also wine and beer.

Tuh kan bener, dia baru kerja disini. Sambil liatin pelayan tadi minta maaf dan membereskan pecahan cangkir, saya memasukkan sesendok Lasagna ke mulut. Nom nom nom, rasanya begitu cheesy and soft, melt in your mouth! Bener-bener beda sama Lasagna beli di Pizza Hut.

Setelah puas ngecas baterai jiwa di pantai, saya kembali ke pusat kota dan berjalan-jalan di sekitar Southbank Promenade. Kawasan ini penuh dengan gedung pencakar langit, hotel, mol, museum, restoran, bar-bar elit, dan taman cantik untuk duduk-duduk santai menikmati pemandangan sungai Yarra. Tempat yang asyik untuk merasakan local vibe, people watching sekaligus foto-foto, street photography all the way!

Southbank always feels alive day and night. This street is full with street performers, artists and bars and restaurants packed with people. It’s a nice spot for your travel photography, enjoying the the local vibe and people watching

Atraksi yang bikin saya terpukau adalah street dance battle ala koprol ga karuan. Mereka joget meliuk-liuk mengikuti irama lagu hip hop yang menghentak. Random dance dengan gerakan yang sangat sulit bikin mulut menganga ‘whoaaaa….!’ tanpa sadar tangan saya pun ikut bertepuk tangan. Ga gampang melakukan breakdance seperti mereka, salah-salah bisa patah tulang, encok, pegel linu. Mungkin kalo bikin soundtrack, mereka akan menari sambil bernyanyi ‘i believe i can roll, i believe i can touch the floor’

Berada di ketinggian menjadi salah satu aktivitas favorit saya saat traveling. Ga ngapa-ngapain, cuma menikmati pemandangan bangunan kota yang tadinya harus mendongak keatas ngeliatnya, dari sini kita mendongak kebawah. Dari Ant view menjadi Bird view. Seperti melihat hidup dengan perspektif yang berbeda. Melihat keatas ala semut membuat saya termotivasi, sementara melihat kebawah ala burung membuat saya bersyukur.

Walaupun bukan gedung pencakar langit tertinggi di dunia, Eureka Sky deck tetap asyik dikunjungi. Gedung yang tingginya 297,3 meter ini ga ada apa-apanya jika dibandingkan dengan Burj Khalifa, Dubai yang mencapai 828 meter. Setidaknya, Eureka Skydeck merupakan gedung tertinggi di belahan bumi bagian selatan, bersanding dengan Q1 Building Queensland.

Dari atas, kamu bisa melihat berbagai landmark keren kota Melbourne. Flemington Racecourse, Port Melbourne, Melbourne Aquarium, Docklands, Williamstown, Government House, Shrine of Remembrance, dan Dandenong Mountain. Sisi yang paling saya suka ada di panorama Federation Square dan Flinders Street Station. Dari atas sini St. Paul Cathedral dan Melbourne CBD terlihat seperti miniatur. Disetiap sisi kaca ada teropong gratis buat kamu meneropong Shizuka lagi mandi.

Ga ada batasan waktu saat kamu berada di Eureka Skydeck. Tapi kalo dah keluar, kamu ga boleh masuk lagi. Jangan ngeres. Disini juga ada kafe kecil, sofa, area teras tanpa kaca dimana kamu bisa menikmati hembusan angin dan kotak pos buat kirim kartu pos ke kekasih khayalan. Cafe nya sih biasa aja, ga ada menu istimewa. Jadi, saya lebih memilih nyemil sore di cafe-cafe keren sekitaran Southbank.

Ada juga area kecil yang disebut dengan ‘The Edge Experience’. Area kubus kaca yang memanjang keluar 3 meter dari bangunan, jadi kita seperti dibuat melayang di langit. Karena harus bayar lagi 12 AUD, saya jadi ga niat nyobain. Mana kamera dan handphone ga boleh dibawa masuk lagi, mungkin karena takut kamera nya bisa jatuh dan bikin kacanya retak.

This is what you called steak! Dry aged black angus sirloin. Angus Beef is known for its finely marbled meat, which means that the fat is dispersed evenly against the actual cut of meat. Dari riset kecil saya, Dry-aged berarti pelayuan daging dengan cara digantung selama 1-2 bulan, di mesin khusus yang disebut dry aging fridge. Dengan suhu udara 1-2 derajat Celcius dan kontrol kelembaban sekitar 80%. Proses ini membuat bagian dalam daging mengering dan warna daging jadi lebih tua. Tujuannya biar daging nya jadi lebih tender – empuk, beraroma dan bikin kita juicy steak-gasm.

Sementara Angus Beef dikenal dengan daging beef kualitas terbaik yang lemaknya menyebar secara merata di tiap bagian daging. Lebih tebel, lembut, juicy dan beraroma dibanding ras lainnya. Straight Dope! Saat itu saya memesan tingkat kematangan daging yang Medium. Matang bagian luar, sedikit mentah di bagian tengah. Slurrpppp… lidah pun bergoyang. Daging nya yang tebel bikin cape ngunyah. Cape keenakan. Kimochi!

Sanjivani - Week 6

Overall Plot

Holy shit, what a fucking week. Lots of interpersonal developments (read: dhamakas!) Shashank ousted Juhi all those years ago (on the request of Rahul) because he was in love with her?!?!? Shashank is also possibly Sid's father, or somehow personally associated with him?????? Rishabh's background is revealed too!!!!! Phew. I am dizzy.

The Medical Stuff

Not that much focus on the medical stuff this week. Neil's dad is quickly diagnosed with Legionnaire's disease and I assume cured (since we didn't see him after that, and Neil happily went along to Sid's for Ganpati.) There's an old friend of Shashank's whose wife had a nasty fall and is showing some pretty bad effects of concussion. Sid's injuries seem to be the priority right now.

The Acting

Dude. Sayantani, what a stellar actress. I could not take my eyes off her in the the scenes where she's at Juhi's house. Her eyes glittering with a strange sort of determination, almost like a suicide bomber, as she presses the button to detonate life as Shashank and Juhi know it. Fucking amazing. She blew (pun unintended!) even Mohnish outta the water, with her ice-cool, unperturbed performance, standing up to him so ably! Gurdeep too, had a nice couple of scenes, alternating between Juhi being disturbed at what she found out, as well as having to take charge of one crisis after the other, and she played it with such grace and poise. Surbhi had a more toned-down week (other than the scenes when Sid gets injured.) I particularly liked the apology scene and the scene where she's praying for Sid. I'm watching YPNTKH rn, and find Namit to be waaaay more polished in that than he is here? How did his dialogue delivery and acting regress a level or two, when he’s so damn steady there? Now I'm legit suspicious of the director(s) of this show, coz if they're not extracting the best out of their two leads, who have proven to be much better performers than they’re exhibiting in this show.... What are they even there for?

The Characters

Sid: Watching YPNTKH has given me a new appreciation for Sanjivani!Sid (he's called Siddhant in that show too!) because he's a much better character here. He's a soft boi who isn't hyped up on ego and toxic masculinity, and I really really love and appreciate that. His admonishment of Ishani (during her apology) underscores his true character; he glossed over her poor behaviour towards him in public and even the fact that she slapped him, to focus on how she was ready to blow up her own career and throw it all away over a past she had nothing to do with. He's an excellent mentor who truly cares for his team and wants to make them the best doctors that they can be. Also, I'm so, so heartened to see how accommodating he is of Ishani's germophobia. Everyone else treats it as a quirk or inconvenience, but he truly takes it into consideration, asking for consent before coming in contact with her (at almost every instance they're close by - not just once for effect and done - I hope they maintain this aspect for good), or protecting her from unwanted contact from others. His crush on her is just so adorable - checking if she’s okay while he’s carrying her, remarking he’s glad that he didn’t punish her for her insubordination because he likes seeing her all soft and contrite; his bashful glee when she gives him a flower, the (mischievously) proud grin as he watches Ishani walk off to give Rishabh what he deserves; gently guiding her to where the best views of the Ganpati fest are, all the while shielding her from unwanted contact from strangers; semi-consciously dragging himself on top of her, to protect her from the gunde!!!!!! What a good, good bean he is. He's truly so beloved that seeing him brought in injured paralyses the whole hospital in shock, and they all unite in both dawa-and-dua ways to ensure he pulls through. Please show, I am fucking begging you; do not ever ruin this character by making him a typical Tellywood hero. Keep him soft and respectful and lovable forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I deserve a male character like this after all the fuckery I’ve been through the years!

Ishani: Ishani finally comes around to seeing Sid for what he is. Even before she learns that he wasn’t the one to blame for the poster drama, she opens up about her emotional issues to him, perhaps the first person she's let in for over 20 years now. Not only him, we see she lets in his mom as well; letting her smear colours on her face, hug her, and feed her sweets from her hand, even asking for more. Really sweet and shows the willingness to make progress on her part, for people who really matter. We also see the side of Ishani that's fiercely protective of those she considers her own; lambasting Rishabh for trying to play with Asha's career, and taking on a whole group of rowdy men who were harassing her, but as per usual, her impulsive side creates more problems than she ever accounts for. Couple that with her tendency to self-blame to a destructive degree, and our girl has a lottttt of work to do, mentally. I really liked the scene where she's praying for Sid, and she says that Sid is her friend, he's everyone's friend here, and they all really need him in Sanjivani. That's all the emotional development that's appropriate for now; what the fuck is this sudden realization of "love" that's coming outta nowhere acc. to the promo for next week???? Please! It's too fucking early for love and all. Friendship, maybe a confusing infatuation of sorts because he’s been her saviour multiple times now, that's it. Not CAPITAL L waala LOVE and all. Also not a fan of how she was just paralyzed and clutching at Sid and weeping after he got injured, instead of doing something helpful. Like, it's hard to believe she's a good doctor when she reacts so emotionally in scenarios like these. I think her skills extend only to diagnosis and she should maybe focus on that, instead of the surgical part.

Asha & Aman: Asha's woes against the patriarchy continue. First with Rishabh threatening to derail her career by bringing her family into the picture, and then those random drunkards at Ganpati. She does pull together nicely though while Ishani is panicking tf out, and manages to insert a chest tube for Sid to alleviate the internal bleeding. I’m glad that she finally opened up to Ishani about why she’s so competitive and bullheaded at work, which in turn leads Ishani standing up for her against Rishabh. A solid girl!love bond growing there and I am thrilled! Aman toh... Lol, continues being Aman. He offers to beat Rishabh up for Asha, roams around the hospital like an errant 10 year old, just generally having a gala time, unlike the others who are there to focus on work. I really cannot read the vibe between these two; are they just really good bro-sis type friends, or is there a romantic undercurrent? I can't tell. Either way, they're good together, and I don't mind whichever way it develops.

Dialogue(s) of the Week:

Asha [when Ishani freaks out that she threw away the literal white flag she was carrying to make up with Sid]: Ab ke ho gaya???? Wapas se teri overacting; dekh, sahi dustbin mein daala hai (iss baar.)

Aman [literally rolling into the scene on a razor scooter, seeing the yellow rose that Asha suggests Ishani give Sid]: Chee, chee, chee chee; itni gareebi aa gayi, ki yo peela phool dene laage tum log? Arre, manne bol diya hota, english waala phool mangwa deta, phoren se. Lekin [scoffs disdainfully] tumhari marzi... [scoots away]

Rishabh: We finally conclusively know who the worst fucking person in this show is so far. Ding ding ding! Winner winner, chicken dinner! This dude is just something fucking else. He threatens to fuck up Asha’s career if she tells anyone about the poster drama. He is a classist fucker who puts down Asha’s background to Ishani, saying she has “gaon waali harkatein.” He doesn’t give a shit if Sid dies of his injuries, to the point that even Vardhan is taken aback with how vitriolic he is. A truly vile creature, this one. We finally find out that he’s the son of the canteen waale chachaji, which explains the confrontation on the day Sid was called in for his investigation (Sid says that only he knows Rishabh’s “asli aukaat”, before Rishabh rudely pushes past him and the canteen chacha who came to offer them both chai.) All his LV belts and fancy car and show-shaa is just to hide his actual economic background and as such, he prevents his father from interacting with him while in Sanjivani. He’s terribly rude and dismissive of him, to the point where the dad wishes it was Rishabh who was battling for his life instead of Sid, who’s always been more of a son to him. Yiiiiikes. Anyway for all his bluster, I am happy that he’s properly terrified of Ishani, who threatened to fuck. him. up. if he steps out of line as far as she and her friends are concerned.

Neil: I was hoping we’d see more of the Neil-struggles-with-medicine-and-his-father’s-expectations plot, but it was done away with for this Ganpati wala track. Maybe next week? Shout out to him for his adorable wardrobe filled with cartoon characters, even a Tweety Bird waala kurta that he wore to Ganpati!

Rahil: Ride or die for Sid, and I’m so glad these two soft boys are best bros. They deserve each other. He seems to be pretty close with Sid’s mom too, which makes me wonder what his family situation is? It was nice to finally see Rahil integrated into the group of residents, teaming up with Asha and Aman to get the truth out of Rishabh. I also like that despite his own terrible injuries, he takes charge of the situation when Sid is injured and gets him the first aid he requires at the moment by instructing Asha/Aman/Neil what to do. Nice progress from that first case where he was panicking and Ishani had to step in. He’s inconsolable when they reach the hospital though, and unwilling to leave Sid’s side to get his own injuries looked at. Best boy, all the love for him!!!!!!!!

Shashank: Lord above, what a week for poor Dr. Shashank. All his children are spontaneously combusting and giving this poor man the worst week of his life (probably.) Anjali unrepentantly blew up his personal and professional relationship with Juhi, Juhi is freezing him the fuck out (I refuse to believe that he has any romantic feelings for her unless he says so himself, out loud), Sid has been brought in at the brink of death, and Ishani is on the verge of a breakdown blaming herself for what happened with Sid. For godssake, this poor man is still recovering from a VERY MAJOR BRAIN SURGERY! Could y’all cut him some damn slack, you terrible little brats!?! He’s trying his best to manage; diplomatically addressing the issue with Anjali, trying to engage in conversation with Juhi, comforting Ishani and friends about Sid, but gosh, he’s really struggling to keep his head above water. Also, the overwrought reaction about Sid......... We’re supposed to think he’s Sid’s father right? But would they really do that to this character???? Make him romantically involved with Juhi AND have an illegitimate child with another woman? Very unlikely that they’d make him such a horndog. So one of these plotlines has to give up, and I really hope that it’s the Juhi one. I can begrudgingly tolerate him being Sid’s dad, but being in romantic love with a woman who was canonically a daughter-figure to him for all these years? Un-fucking-acceptable.

Sid’s mom: We don’t have a name yet, but Aarti Bahl (aka Ekta Sohini) also played Nurse Padma Bansal Gupta (Shashank’s second wife) in DMG after Shilpa Tulaskar left. So is she Padma here too, or a whole new character with the same face? As for why the previous actress was replaced, I have a feeling it was because she didn’t look age-appropriate and/or conventionally “attractive” to be paired against Mohnish for this “is Shashank Sid’s father?” plotline. I’m not sure what to make of Aarti’s acting, she seemed very stiff with that forced smile throughout the Ganpati function; and wasn’t too impressive in the scenes where she was panicking and hiding from Shashank either. The scenes I really liked her in were when she was lovingly fussing over Ishani, and later in the hospital when she remarked how proud she was of Sid for standing up to protect the honour of a woman. She has a very soft and calming voice, and her dialogue delivery is really pleasant and soothing, so I’m hoping I grow to like her in this character.

Juhi: Juhi’s not really having a great week either, but she’s a boss bitch who has everything (mostly) in control and I am so fucking happy to see that. I’m glad she didn’t fall apart over the “truth” or try to leave Sanjivani over it - curtly stating to Shashank that she’s signed a contract and intends to honour it, unless he fires her again. She has a brief confusing moment with him while conducting a motor function assessment to determine his fitness to do surgery again, but other than that, she’s all pulled together. She’s mostly brusque with Shashank, trying to prove that she deserves to be here because of her capabilities, and trying to break out from under his shadow to be a proficient COS in her own right; but she’s also gently firm with him when he emotionally barges in trying to help with Sid, insisting that she has it under control and assuring that she will not let anything happen to him. It’s so great to see her balance both her medical/admin skills as well as the firm-yet-empathizing demeanor so ably.

Anjali: Oh Anjali. I love you but you have some serious daddy issues that you need heavy-duty therapy for. On one hand, I understand why she is so resentful and passive-aggressive the way she is (Sayantani’s portrayal compels us to peek beneath the layers!) but on the other, she really had no right to throw Shashank under the bus like that. But I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the way she did it - so bloody spectacularly; unfazed at getting slapped by her father in front of her “rival”, chugging down a whole glass of wine and insulting Juhi’s cooking before she left for the night. So tragic, yet so fucking hilarious. On a professional front, I’m predicting that she’s gonna tire of this Luxury Ward COS post real soon, since it only seems to have her stand around kowtowing to rich assholes like a receptionist of some sort. I can only hope that she wises up to Vardhan’s BS soon enough, instead of serving as collateral damage and falling into the quagmire he’s planning with Rahul to target Shashank/Juhi.

Vardhan: Not much of Vardhan this week other than him entering that secret room he’s built for Rahul in the Luxury Ward. Good. I prefer him in small, controlled doses. And at least we have some clarification that even with all his shady crap, he’s not as horrible a human being as Rishabh - stating that even though he doesn’t like the way Sid operates within Sanjivani, he hopes he pulls through in surgery.

As we celebrate Earth Day, this April 22, learn about 10 famous trees - both live and dead - that witnessed history and played vital roles in shaping the major world events.

10. Bodhi Tree (Bodh Gaya, India)

The Bodhi Tree or the Bo Tree - meaning - ‘the tree of awakening’ - is the tree under which Siddharta Gautama attained enlightnment after 49 days of concentrated meditation. To the Botanists, the Bodhi Tree is Ficus religiosa or the Fig tree. It is a species of fig in the Moraceae family. The Bodhi tree that exsits today is not exactly the one that shaded the meditation of Buddha 2,500 year ago, but it may well be a direct descentant. At Bodhgaya, the Bodhi tree is the favorite spot for pilgrims to meditate and contemplate the Buddha teachings.

9. General Sherman Tree (Sequoia National Park, California)

By volume, the General Sherman Tree is the largest living single stem tree on Earth. It is believed to be 2,300 to 2,700 years old, and is named for Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. According to the National Park Service, the tree is 274.9 feet tall with a 102.6 foot circumference at its base.

8. Emancipation Oak (Hampton, Virginia)

The Emancipation Oak is a historic tree on the campus of Hampton University, Virginia. This largest spawling tree is 98 feet in diameter, with branches that extend upward and laterally. The Emancipation Oak is a southern live oak (Quercus Virginiana). During the American Civil War (1861 - 1865) the oak became the shelter for the escaped African-American slaves seeking asylum.

7. Japanese Cherry Trees (Washington, D.C.)

The flowering Cherry trees in Washington D.C. is the living symbols of peace between the United States and Japan. You can find this mesmerizing view lining the Tidal Basin. The first shipment of the Cherry trees from Japan was infected with insects and parasitic worms, and was ordered to be destroyed by President William Taft. The second shipment of more than 3,000 cherry trees arrived at March, 1912 and was planted on the parkland reclaimed from the Potomac River’s mud flats.

6. September 11 Survivor Tree (New York City, New York)

It was weeks after the September 11 World Trade Center attack, the recovery workers at the Ground Zero found a lone life among the rumbles of World Trade Center. It was a Callery Pear tree, scorched and crushed, yet somehow managed to be alive. The tree was then taken to the Bronx nursery to be nursed back tto health. The tree was replanted at the site in 2010 and is now a part of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum as a symbol of survival and resilience.

5. Issac Newton’s Apple Tree (Woolsthorpe, England)

According to the tale told by Sir Issac Newton to his friends and biographers, he was sitting in his garden of his birthplace, Woolsthorpe Manor, he noticed an apple fall from one of his trees, which later led to the discovery of the law of univaersal gravitation.

4. Anne Frank’s Tree (Amstredam, Netherlands)

The two years Anne Frank remained hidden in the secret annex of her father’s workplace, the only glimpse she had of the ourside world was that of a chestnut tree in the coutyard and longed for the freedom of the birds that perched on its branches. “As long as this exists”, Anne wrote in her diary, “how can I be sad?” On February 23, 1944, she recorded her friendship with Peter and the peace she found by looking outside her window. “ The two of us looked out at the blue sky, the bare chestnut tree glistening with dew, the seagulls and other birds glinting with silver as they swooped through the air, and we were so moved and entranced that we couldn’t speak.”

3. Liberty Tree (Boston, Massachusetts)

It was during August, 1765, a defidant group of American colonists proclaiming themselves to be the Sons of Liberty gathered beneath the century-old elm tree to protest the enactment of the highly unpopular Stamp Act. Over the next decade, the patriots gathered around the tree for meetings and celebrations. Later, the tree was chopped down to firewoods by the British soldiers and loyalists during the summer of 1775.

2. Charter Oak (Hartford, Connecticut)

England’s King James II, after taking over the throne sought to revoke the royal charter issued to Connecticut in 1662 by his predecessor and late brother, King Charles II. But, the colonists of Connecticut had no intrest to turn over the document. According to the legend, the King’s royal governor, Sir Edmund Andros, met with the colonial leaders in Hartford meeting house in 1687. After the Governor demanded the Charter, the candles in the room went out. Once the light was restored, the parchment had vanished. Caption Joseph Wadsworth supposedly squirreled the document away in the trunk of a nearby white Oak tree. The Chater remained in Colonial custody and was used to rule Conecticut till 1818. The century-old Oak tree was blow down in a storm in 1856. The remains of the tree is still treasured as a state symbol.

Legends has it that the hollow trunk of this massive oak tree situated in the heart of Nottinghamshire’s Sherwood forest was used by Robin Hood and his band of merry men as a hideout. The sparwling limbs of the oak is now supported by steel poles.
