Note
I know pterodactyls are technically not dinosaurs, nor are they a species. What's the difference between pterosaurs and pteranodons?
(Does people calling them pterodactyl bother you at all?)
Pterosauria: the large category that contains all "pterodactyls". doesn't contain all flying reptiles thanks to, well, dinosaurs, but all flying reptiles that AREN'T dinosaurs are in this group (iirc). Can be referred to as Pterosaurs
Pterodactyloidea: the vast majority of pterosaurs, which can all be called "pterodactyls". usually have short tails, as opposed to long tailed pterosaurs outside of this group. Includes Pteranodon.
Pterodactylus: the original Pterodactyl, this pterosaur was discovered early and given this name. Even if you don't call other pterosaurs pterodactyls, you can call this one that, because it's literally its name
Pteranodon: a specific genus of derived pterosaur, so within pterodactyloidea (in fact, its in the sub group Eupterodactyloidea)
people calling them pterodactyls only bothers me a little bit, because by all accounts, the name of the group should have been "Pterodactylia" to begin with. the fact that it's pterosauria is extremely annoying for scicomm because it really didn't have to be
