Dash seemed ready to keep yelling, but stumbled back in fear when the other three stood up, but all they did was take their lunch and leave.

Now alone in the front-yard, the mutants went back to their two remaining options.

“I mean we know that Magneto is right.” Sam said, getting assent from her friends. “But, like, he’s very quick to sacrifice his own people.”

“Xavier does tend to send teens to the battlefield too, though…”

“So we’re just going with the least worst option.” Tucker concluded, resting his chin in the palm of his hand. “If this backfires on us, we gotta remember that.”

Following the FA Cup, it is the second oldest competition in association football.

The Scottish FA imposed new rules for these competitive games, helping to raise standards and putting the foundations in place for the professional game in Scotland.

The first tournament began in October 1873 and a total of 16 teams entered the competition. The final was held on 21 March 1874 at the original Hampden Park with Queen’s Park emerging victorious against Clydesdale. It was a tournament that Queen’s Park would dominate during that early period.

Iran has for the first time reported that more than 300 people have died in over two months of protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in morality police custody.

The Islamic republic has deployed state security forces against what it labels "riots" that broke out after the 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian died on September 16, three days after her arrest for allegedly breaching Iran's dress code for women.

"Everyone in the country has been affected by the death of this lady," said Brigadier General Amirali Hajizadeh of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in a video published by the Mehr news agency.

"I don't have the latest figures, but I think we have had perhaps more than 300 martyrs and people killed," among them some of "the best sons of the country", said Hajizadeh, head of the Guards' aerospace division.

The toll includes those who have taken to the streets as well as dozens of police, troops and IRGC militia who have died in clashes with demonstrators or who were killed elsewhere.

The latest official death toll is much closer to the figure of at least 416 people "killed in the suppression of protests in Iran" published by the Oslo-based non-government group Iran Human Rights.

The group says its toll includes those killed in violence related to the Amini protests and in distinct unrest in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, near the borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Thousands of Iranians and around 40 foreigners have been arrested and more than 2,000 people have been charged, according to judicial authorities.

Pride Cup footballer Jason Ball gets King's Birthday honour

Jason Ball, the footballer who came out as gay and introduced Pride Cup events to hundreds of sporting clubs, has made the King’s Birthday Honours List.

After the amateur Aussie Rules player came out in 2012, he became an “accidental activist” and founded the Pride Cup organisation.

Jason’s club Yarra Glen in regional Victoria held the first Pride Cup. Since then, more than 800 sporting clubs across Australia have hosted the inclusive events.

On Monday, Jason Ball was appointed a Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia for his work on social inclusion initiatives.

“I dedicate this award to our sponsors, supporters, and the 800+ sporting clubs promoting inclusivity through Pride Cup events,” Jason said.

“This King’s Birthday honour reflects the collective effort and commitment of the entire Pride Cup initiative.

“I’m deeply thankful to our sponsors and every club that has hosted a Pride Cup event. Your dedication is the heartbeat of our progress.”

Shift in attitudes in sport since 2012

Jason Ball said footy has come “a long way” since 2012. He said it was disappointing to see two AFL players – Port Adelaide’s Jeremy Finlayson and Gold Coast’s Wil Powell – cop match bans for using homophobic slurs.

However, Jason added the AFL’s response shows that “these days people are getting it.”

“There are signs that culture and attitudes are changing because the players owned up to it,” he told AAP.

“They were very quick in apologising. They were willing to apologise to the LGBTQIA+ community who are impacted by this kind of language.

“The AFL coming down [on the players] is going to have an impact on the culture. That’s the leadership that we need to see.”

Two Equality Australia advocates receive honours

Meanwhile, national LGBTIQ+ group Equality Australia has cheered its co-chair Leonard Vary and board member Ryan Phillips also making the 2024 King’s Birthday Honours List.

Equality Australia co-chair Leonard Vary, who is CEO of The Myer Foundation and Sidney Myer Fund, was appointed Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the philanthropic sector, to the LGBTQIA+ community and to the arts.

Leonard was closely involved with the Australian Marriage Equality campaign. In 2016, Leonard was named as one of Australia’s 50 outstanding LGBTI role models.

“I am personally delighted but in a real way this is a recognition of the groundbreaking work undertaken by Equality Australia in its ongoing efforts to secure equality for our communities,” Leonard said.

Ryan Phillips, who has been on Equality Australia’s board since 2019, received a Public Service Medal for outstanding service during his 14-year career.

The proud WA trans man was promoted to Associate Secretary at the Department of Justice in October 2023.

“I’m delighted to receive a Public Service Medal which recognises my efforts to foster a safe and equitable justice system,” he said.

“It is a privilege to contribute to the tireless work of the Victorian Public Service on delivering outcomes for our most vulnerable populations, including LGBTIQ+ people. This work sits at the heart of a just and equal society”.

Equality Australia CEO Anna Brown said the King’s Birthday honours were well-deserved recognition for both of the advocates.

“They are exemplary and inspiring leaders and role model for our communities. It’s wonderful to see their impressive contributions and commitment recognised.”
