Only recently has manufacturing techniques advanced enough to make them cost-efficient to routinely install in production consumer vehicles. 
Superchargers/turbochargers are complex arrangements of step-up gears that drive air compression fan(s) at high speeds. Gears require very precise machining, especially at the speeds superchargers run at, and that also requires them to be very strong and durable - and aircraft applications also prefer if they’re light, too.
