BARBARA ROBERTS ★ DTN SERIES
series’ masterlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An old chapter is reopened, that force and distinction that drove Barbara Roberts to the top of F1 for two consecutive years, back home. Malibu Racing is a new temple, the extension of a legacy.
Barbara Roberts, Team Principal and CEO of Malibu Racing F1 Team has her origins tied to history books. A two-time world champion whose on-track abilities couldn’t be ignored. A fierce competitor who came back for more.
At the young age of four, Barbara began chasing the excitement behind the wheel, observing karting races closely, going home, and developing her talent with each lap of her uncle’s old kart. She found happiness in speed, enjoyed visiting the Phoenix Street Circuit each year, obsessed over the Indy500, and watched Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost challenge each other throughout the years. Suddenly, she began to dream about a hot-pink car, all her notebooks filled with drawings of it. She, as well as her family, then understood that racing was a fire that needed to be fueled.
Roberts made her kart racing debut at the age of eight, and after winning her first race, it was a matter of time before her name was engraved on several US-based kart championship trophies. However, further progress would require expanding horizons, which prompted the Roberts to move across the ocean in 1994, supporting Barbara for what could be a challenging career.
Europe was fast, she stayed faster. By fourteen her collection of kart titles included national, international, and world championships. Every race and practice aimed for that unattainable perfection, being aware of the judging eyes on each step she took. At 16 years old, Roberts was fearless, deciding to pursue another dream of hers, an engineering career. She used to say that the pressure was a reminder of what was yet to come.
Pieces began to fall into place, Barbara embarked on single-seaters as soon as age allowed it. Her first title in Monoposto Racing Club was followed by titles in Formula BMW ADAC, Formula Renault, and the Formula 3 Euro Series — all consecutive titles. And bound to keep the momentum, she started hunting for a seat in Formula One, closing the deal with BMW Williams in a reserve capacity for 2004 and securing a race seat for the 2005 season.
Debuting at 21, Barbara spent her year fighting at the midfield in struggling machinery, yet was able to finish 10th in the World Championship, once again pouring ink on paper for what would be BMW Sauber in 2006. An improvement in reliability for her sophomore season placed Roberts on track for her maiden Grand Prix victory in the streets of Monaco, an unbelievable, emotional, and well-remembered drive that holds her in the tracks’ spotlight to this day.
For the 2007 season, Scuderia Ferrari took the bet on two young talents: Barbara Roberts and Kimi Räikkönen, giving both drivers the exact same 3-year-contract and an opportunity to make history.
The pair held a fiery battle all season, ending in one of the most astonishing title deciders in the sport’s history, where the world championship rested on their number of wins due to a tie in the points. The crown sealed on Räikkönen, but Barbara’s own would arrive that very next year, securing it after 8 wins and 15 total podiums.
In her final year of mastery, Roberts became a double World Champion after a year-long battle against Brawn’s Jenson Button, three points separating them. And despite being contracted to race in 2010, Roberts decided to leave F1 behind at the end of the 2009 season.
After her F1 retirement, Barbara has taken on different roles and challenges throughout the years. In 2011 revealing her retirement's original reason, Roberts announced her new position as CEO of her family’s emblematic automobile manufacturer, Malibu Motors, linking nostalgia with modernity. In 2016, they held the biggest car launch in history, presenting one supercar and seven SUVs which resulted into having six of those as the bestselling cars of the year. In 2017, Malibu Motors became part of the Formula 3 engine programme, making the public think that was her only form of a comeback to motorsport. Yet, one year later, a victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans was waiting for her and former rivals, Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button. And, in for 2019, she begun sponsoring multiple young women across motorsport, mentoring those in the path to Formula One.
Important figures of the sport, old colleagues, and the public, believed Barbara would be back in the car sooner or later, but after fourteen years, she has opted for a different path. A decade-long project becomes reality in 2023, with two hot-pink cars flying on track, resembling Barbie’s old childhood drawings.

Rising Rosberg primed to emerge from old friend's slipstream
Originally written 22 March 2008 by Alan Henry for The Guardian (x)
German's podium finish last week showed he is ready to resume a decade-long rivalry.
It was the most touching moment of the Australian grand prix weekend. Lewis Hamilton was wiping away the perspiration of victory behind the podium when he spotted his old friend Nico Rosberg, similarly flushed after an impressive run to third place, his best finish in formula one.
Suddenly Hamilton leaped forward and gave Rosberg a big hug and the two of them jumped up and down in frantic delight. For a brief moment they were no longer young professionals in their early 20s, racing in big-time formula one, but the young karting drivers they had been a decade earlier.
"It's great to see Nico up here with me for the first time since our karting days," said Hamilton enthusiastically after showering his old rival with champagne. But Hamilton's memory was clearly playing tricks. "I didn't like to say it at the time," said Rosberg, "but he had forgotten the 2004 formula three Bahrain international in which Lewis and I finished first and second. I then went on to compete in GP2 the following season while he did another year in formula three before moving up into GP2 in 2006."
Rosberg has a matchless pedigree. The son of the 1982 world champion Keke Rosberg, only the second driver to take the title at the wheel of a Williams, Nico was born four days after his father won the 1985 US grand prix in Detroit in a Williams-Honda. Nico recalled that he always had a really good relationship with his father, even though Keke could be very critical "although in a constructive way…"
"But my father helped me a lot and didn't intervene when I took the decision to pass up the opportunity to come to study at Imperial College in London for a degree in aerodynamic engineering," he said. "I think he could see that by then I'd made my mind up to pursue my racing career and I realised that I couldn't do both because I'd lose too much momentum if I went to university. So my father didn't say anything and just sat back and let me make my decision for myself. I think in the end he was just pleased that I'd come to a conclusion by myself."
The younger Rosberg started competing in 1996 at the age of 11, winning the Cote d'Azur mini-kart championship. He continued racing karts to the end of 2001 then switched to cars, winning the ADAC formula BMW championship with nine race wins. Many formula one insiders now regard Rosberg as among the most promising emergent stars of what some already call "the Lewis generation".
"Nico [and] probably Sebastian Vettel are the two drivers most likely to get in Hamilton's way to prevent him winning seven straight world championships," said the pundit Martin Brundle, not altogether seriously, in the Sepang paddock yesterday. Yet the point was well made.
After Fernando Alonso left McLaren last season, Rosberg was at the top of their wanted list as a new team-mate for Hamilton. But Frank Williams was not interested, rejecting a substantial offer from McLaren to buy out Rosberg's contract and rewarding the young German driver with an extension to his existing contract to the end of 2010.
"Finishing on the rostrum for the first time is an important milestone in every driver's career," said Rosberg, reflecting on his performance in Melbourne. "It's right up there with your first front-row start, scoring your first championship points and, of course, your first win, which I have still to achieve."
The Williams management consider Rosberg to be a chip off the old block, with many of the qualities that made his father so popular. The team have not won a grand prix since Juan Pablo Montoya triumphed in Brazil in 2004, and Jacques Villeneuve won their last world championship in 1997. "It's probably a bit much to expect Nico to have anything more than an outside chance of winning a race this year," said a team insider, "but Frank has great faith in him."
Rosberg agreed: "We are under no illusions as to where we are in the overall pecking order. To be honest, I don't see this as a launch pad from which we can make a bid for race wins. Not yet, anyway. We can't get over-confident just because we got a podium. The fact is we are still the fourth best team behind McLaren, Ferrari and BMW, so the best place we can finish realistically is seventh.
"That's our reality, as bad as it sounds. So we need to be careful and not be disappointed if we're suddenly running in seventh. And we also need to be careful because the teams behind us are very close - Renault, Toyota, Red Bull. It is not an easy situation."

2021: Part-Time Drivers
(NOTE: Not all seats are confirmed for 2021 season, and part-timers may be added for additional races, especially the Indy 500)
Up to date as of 4/17/2021.
(Another long post so under the cut it goes)
Marco Andretti
Tumblr media
The grandson of Mario Andretti and the son of Michael Andretti. Previously raced in Indycar full-time, but has taken a step back, citing he wants to explore other opportunities. In his 15 seasons in Indycar, he has achieved two wins, 20 podium finishes, and six pole positions. This season he will race the 98 Andretti Herta Autosport with Marco Andretti and Curb-Ajaganian entry for the Indy 500.
Ed Carpenter
Tumblr media
Nicknamed the ‘Oval Master’ due to his performance and preference to race on ovals. The only owner/driver in the field (if you don’t count Marco Andretti’s partnership car). Used to drive full time before he made the decision to only race ovals. In his 17 years in Indycar, he has achieved three wins, nine podium finishes, and four pole positions. This season he will race only the oval races in the 20 entry for Ed Carpenter Racing.
Helio Castroneves
Tumblr media
A who needs no introduction, is one of only 10 drivers to have ever won the Indy 500 three times. Has competed on Dancing with the Stars and also raced in IMSA for Team Penske. In his 20 years in Indycar, he has had 24 wins, 83 podium finishes, and 47 pole positions. This season will be his first away from Team Penske, and he will race the 6 entry for Meyer Shank Racing for six races, including the Indy 500.
Max Chilton
Tumblr media
Former F1 driver, made 35 starts for Marussia. Made his way to Indycar in 2016 with Chip Ganassi, and has since been helping Carlin develop their Indycar program. This season will be his sixth in Indycar. He will race the road and street courses for Carlin in the 59 entry.
Conor Daly
Tumblr media
Recently spotted showing off his (horrible) mullet, cited this as the reason he can’t run both Indycar and Nascar at the double-header weekend in Indy. Has raced in many forms of motorsports, including Indy Lights, GP3, GP2 and the Nascar Xfinity Series. In his 7 years in Indycar he has one podium finish and one pole position. This season he will race the road and street courses in the 20 entry for Ed Carpenter Racing, and possibly the Indy 500 in a car yet to be announced.
Santino Ferrucci
Tumblr media
After being kicked out of F2, he was signed by Dale Coyne for two years full-time. He now races in the Nascar Xfinity Series, but will be returning to race the Indy 500 (unfortunately). In his two years in Indycar, he achieved no wins, podiums, or poles, but gained the ire of Josef Newgarden (repeatedly).
Pietro Fittipaldi
Tumblr media
Was signed in 2018 to race part time with Dale Coyne Racing, but broke both legs in a crash racing in the World Endurance Championship. Recently named a reserve driver for Haas F1 Team and raced in place of Romain Grosjean while Romain recovered from his injuries. This season will be his first in Indycar, and he will drive ovals in the 51 entry for Dale Coyne Racing with Rick Ware Racing.
Romain Grosjean
Tumblr media
Former F1 driver, most recently drove for Haas F1 team and also appeared on the Netflix documentary series Drive to Survive. Had 10 podium finishes in his F1 career. This will be his first season in Indycar, and he will drive the road and street courses in the 51 entry for Dale Coyne Racing with Rick Ware Racing.
JR Hildebrand
Tumblr media
Former full-time Indycar driver and almost an Indy 500 winner, now races just the 500 each year. The real owner of the best hair in Indycar. Appears on The Race’s Indycar Podcast. In his 11 years in Indycar, he has achieved three podium finishes. This year, he will race the Indy 500 in the 1 entry (borrowed from Scott Dixon and Chip Ganassi Racing) for AJ Foyt Racing.
Jimmie Johnson
Tumblr media
A Nascar legend, has seven Cup Series Championships to his name. Recently retired from Nascar, citing a desire to try other forms of motorsports, including Indycar. Last season he raced in the Cup Series for Hendrick Motorsports. This will be his first season in Indycar of a two-year deal, and he will race the road and street courses in the 48 entry for Chip Ganassi Racing.
Tony Kanaan
Tumblr media
A fan favorite driver, the 2004 series Champion, and the 2013 Indy 500 Champion. Most prominent feature is (of course) his nose. He announced his retirement from Indycar and that the 2020 season would be “TK’s Last Lap”, but he has returned for another “Last Last Lap”. In his 19 years in Indycar, he has achieved 16 wins, 72 podium finishes, and 10 pole positions. This season he will race ovals in the 48 entry for Chip Ganassi Racing.
Charlie Kimball
Tumblr media
One of two drivers in the grid to race with Diabetes (the other being Conor Daly), and the first officially licensed driver to drive with Diabetes in Indycar. Had his wedding officiated by James Hinchcliffe. In his 10 years in Indycar, he has achieved one win, six podiums, and one pole position. This season he will race the Indy GP and the Indy 500 in the 11 entry for AJ Foyt Enterprises.
Juan Pablo Montoya
Tumblr media
A man of many talents, and all of those talents are in racing. A two-time Indy 500 champion, the 2019 IMSA Champion, 2017 Race of Champions Champion of Champions (try saying that five times fast...), raced in F1 for BMW Williams and McLaren Mercedes, and in the Nascar Xfinity and Cup Series for Chip Ganassi Racing and Team Penske. In his five year Indycar career (not including the two years he spent in ChampCar prior to the merge), he achieved five wins, 13 podiums, and three poles. This season he will race the Indy 500 in the 66 entry for Arrow McLaren SP.
Simona de Silvestro
Tumblr media
A former full-time Indycar driver, she has also raced in Formula E and in V8 Supercars. Last season she raced in ADAC GT Masters. Her last Indycar race was in 2015. This season, she will race the Indy 500 in the 16 entry for Paretta Autosport.
Cody Ware
Tumblr media
I don’t know much about him but from my impressions based on his twitter profile: a weeb, one of those car guys, definitely has a million stickers on his car, maybe even a Miku car wrap. Currently races in the Nascar Cup Series and will be racing the Indy 500 this season. Will drive the 52 entry for Dale Coyne/Rick Ware racing.

Nico Rosberg and Maro Engel: a non-exhaustive compilation of their friendship over the years
Tumblr media
"My friends are all Italian, I grew up with their mentality and get along with it best. But my best friend at school was Maro Engel, who now drives in the DTM. He, his family and another family friend were the only Germans I really had contact with." (2008)
Tumblr media
Question: "Nico Rosberg also grew up in Monaco. Did you have much contact? Two German teenagers in a foreign country with the same passion, racing…" Engel: "It was through Nico that I got into racing in the first place. We were in the same class together at school, became best friends very quickly and then also went on vacation together. There, his father Keke bought Nico a go-kart for his birthday and asked my father if he wouldn't like to buy me one, too. That's how the whole thing started." Question: "When was that exactly?" Engel: "That was in 1991." (2008)
Tumblr media
What happened subsequently? Maro Engel: After that, we used to have fun, messing around in the mini karts. We then took them back home to Monaco, where I would practise with Nico at weekends. Our parents eventually started up a kart team together, and we contested our first races with the team at around ten years of age. We then went our separate ways from a racing point of view. I competed in junior kart races in Germany and Nico in Italy. (2017)
Tumblr media
Becoming a racing driver in Monaco seems to have come naturally. My parents had nothing at all to do with motorsport, my father found it quite interesting and watched it in front of the TV from time to time. I got into it through my friend Nico Rosberg. His father Keke said it would be cool if the boys played kart together. Nico Rosberg is your childhood friend? I was in kindergarten with him. We became close friends very quickly from then on and started karting together. We started on his father's track in Ibiza. Keke had a property there with its own kart track. We were on vacation there together, and Keke gave Nico a kart for his birthday. We are two months apart, Nico's birthday is June 27 and mine is August 27. We were turning six at the time. So your father was under pressure? Yes. Keke asked him if he wouldn't like to give me a vehicle like that, so the kids could do something together - and the parents could enjoy their vacation. That's how it turned out. Nico and I also went to school together in Monaco and later to the English school in Nice. Our friendship lasts until today. My fiancée Steffi gets along excellently with Nico's wife Vivian. (2017)

Who also cheered loudly was Nico Rosberg. The Formula 1 world champion is currently on an inspirational trip to the USA and was hugely happy for his kindergarten buddy. "I'm very pleased that Maro's perseverance and ambition prevailed. I know these qualities only too well from many backgammon games," Rosberg told Auto Bild Motorsport. "It's great to see that Maro never gave up after his DTM debut in 2008 and has now been rewarded for it. Hopefully many more victories will follow," he said. (2017)

Tourenwagen Classics
DTM 082
Juli), Lausitzring (23.–25. August) und Nürburgring (13.–15. September) stehen bereits seit Langem fest.

BMW M Motorsport attends three-day DTM Young Driver Test at Jerez
The DTM Young Driver Test at Jerez de la Frontera (ESP) allowed BMW M Motorsport to offer four drivers the opportunity to gain valuable experience at the wheel of the BMW M4 DTM – and possibly to stake their claim for a BMW DTM seat for the 2019 season. The drivers in action were former BMW Motorsport Junior and future BMW works driver Mikkel Jensen (DEN), BMW works driver Nick Catsburg (NED), Britain’s Nick Yelloly, and South African Sheldon van der Linde. The three-day test took place from Monday to Wednesday.
Jensen completed his second year of training as a BMW Motorsport Junior in 2018. The 23-year-old was a regular driver in the ADAC GT Masters, in which he shared the cockpit of the BMW M6 GT3 with Timo Scheider (GER). Catsburg is a permanent member of the team in the BMW M8 GTE in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), and also makes regular appearances at the wheel of the BMW M6 GT3.
Yelloly is another familiar face in the BMW family. The 28-year-old Brit drove the BMW M6 GT3 for ROWE Racing in this season’s Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup. Yelloly’s Formula racing has taken him right up to GP2, and he has been successful in one-make cups for several years. 19-year-old van der Linde caught the eye on the GT scene last year. He finished runner-up in the ADAC GT Masters and came home third to claim a spot on the podium at the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps (BEL).
The four drivers took to the track at Jerez de la Frontera in the 2018 DEUTSCHE POST BMW M4 DTM. BMW DTM driver Philipp Eng (AUT) took the car out for its reference laps.
BMW M Motorsport also used the three-day test to continue development work on the BMW M4 DTM for the 2019 season, which has been modified in line with Class 1 regulations. BMW DTM drivers Marco Wittmann (GER) and Bruno Spengler (CAN) alternated at the wheel of the car, which is powered by a newly-developed turbo engine.
Mikkel Jensen: “I know the BMW M4 DTM as a race taxi, but to drive the real race car in a test on the track is something different. You think you could use you experience from the taxi but you have to put the car on the limit in a different way. You have to really fine-tune your driving style to be fast and there is always something you can find in every corner. That was really interesting. The carbon brakes are amazing, as they bite really hard. It was fantastic to feel how the car was stopping. And the high-speed corners: when you are used to GT cars, you think you sit in the same type of car. But the BMW M4 DTM just goes so much faster in the corner.”
Nick Catsburg: “It was definitely a lot of fun. The big difference to the BMW M8 GTE and the BMW M6 GT3 I usually drive is the high-speed cornering. The downforce level is much higher and the braking was something I had to get used to. The BMW M4 DTM is a very impressive car, pretty much as I expected as I had already heard that it’s really cool car – and that’s honestly true. A very cool car to drive.”
Nick Yelloly: “It was great fun to drive the BMW M4 DTM, I really enjoyed it. A big thank you to BMW for giving me the opportunity. Considering the weight of the car, the high-speed in the corners is really fantastic. As I have driven high downforce cars before I knew what to expect but the BMW M4 DTM still impressed me a lot.“
Sheldon van der Linde: “It was an amazing experience. It’s so different to what I am used to. I have only driven in GT3 before so it was a really big step in the beginning, but the engineers and everyone helped me a lot and Philipp also gave quite a few tips. What I liked most about the BMW M4 DTM is the downforce. It’s incredible and the speed you can enter the corners with is amazing.”
Marco Wittmann: “Our job at the tests was to make progress with the development of the new car. One focus was on the new turbo engine: it is important to understand this better, and to fine tune it, from test to test. The engineers, teams and us drivers obviously still have a lot of work ahead of us, to be well prepared going into the new season. After all, this is the start of a new era in the DTM. However, we are all excited and very much looking forward to it. More power is always cool for us drivers. The test at Jerez was another important step towards the new season and we have now all – drivers, mechanics, engineers – earned our Christmas. I would like to wish the fans, who can look forward to an exciting DTM season in 2019, a very merry Christmas.”
Bruno Spengler: “We are progressing well with our work on the BMW M4 DTM for the coming season. The conditions have been consistent, we completed a lot of laps, and made good progress through our planned programme. That is very important, as we only have a certain number of test days. It was a productive test and I am now looking forward to a few quiet days ‘between the seasons’ with my family. I would like to wish the whole team and all the fans, who support us all year round, a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.”

W SERIES 2021 DRIVER INTRODUCTIONS: #95 Beitske Visser
Born 10 March 1995 in Dronten, The Netherlands, Beitske began karting at the age of 12. In 2010 she was a champion in the KZ2 class in the WSK Master Series and in 2011 she finished 3th in the KZ1 class in the WSK Master Series. In her first car race she won despite a 25-second longer pitstop and a drive-through penalty. She joined the Red Bull Junior Team in 2013 but was dropped again after the season. In 2017 she joined the BMW Junior Team.
“When I was 12 I’d started racing internationally and some boys couldn’t handle being slower than a girl. They started smashing me off the track so I had to learn to be quite hard. If some guy hit me off I’d hit him off harder to get respect. I couldn’t let them mess with me. I always had the speed to be in front but I had to learn the mindset too. W Series is changing perceptions – we have more respect as drivers now and it is spurring me on.”
