Pidge and Nevar, polar opposites and best friends.

Pidge and Nevar are about as different as any two hens can be, colouration, size (Pidge is much larger), even their temperaments. Pidge is friendly to all and makes happy little noises... Nevar sounds like a banshee at the best of times and is rather selective about her acquaintances. They are the proof that opposites attract.

Update from Fort Featherly! The coop has been covered and wrapped to hopefully avert any issues with bird flu should it arrive in our area. And the newcomers have finished their month of quarantine and are now in the “intro area” of the coop so they can meet their new friends.

Pidge (Delaware hen) has her priorities, and that meant a bath before anything!

Nevar (Ayam Cemani hen) couldn’t decide where to explore first. A bath? Grass grazing? Worm digging? Other birds to watch? Nevar is a bit higher strung. :)

So far, so good. Fingers crossed.

Whose mysteriously manly silhouette is this?

It is CinderFella, with his bevy of beauties rustling about in the leaves of Fall.

These photos show the double fencing, the original cyclone fence put up to keep out the raccoons, and the deer netting over the top added after when the Avian Flu showed up. The deer netting keeps the wild birds from entering Fort Featherly and possibly infecting the flock. A temporary roof is over the coop, with a permanent one on its way when we can afford it.

We wish to introduce you to the newest Ladies of the Coop, Pidge and Nevar. They are nearing the end of their quarantine period and soon will begin their intros into their new coop. Pidge is a Delaware hen, and got her name because she coos like a pigeon. And Nevar....

Nevar is the Ayam Cemani I have always wanted but never thought I would get. So, so, so very dark. Just gorgeous. Cannot wait for her to be out in the sunlight so I can start learning how to get decent photos of her.
