Lesser Known Facts About India’s Role In The Cold War !!
Lesser Known Facts About India’s Role In The Cold War !!
Tumblr media
Cold War: April 1961, a period when the leaders of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics ( USSR) were concerned that the United States of America would invade communist-ruled Cuba and overthrow its president, Fidel Castro.Cuba was a supporter of the Soviet Union and received both financial and diplomatic aid from the Soviet Union. The then-leader of the Soviet Union, Nikita Khrushchev, decided to make Cuba as Russia’s base.In 1992, Nikita Khrushchev placed a nuclear missile in Cuba. The Americans became aware of it. John F. Kennedy, the USA President, was hesitant to do anything which could lead to full-scale nuclear war.
Tumblr media
Kennedy was determined to remove the missiles and nuclear weapons from Cuba. This gave emergence to the clash between USA and USSR. The clash came to be known as the Cuban Missile. The Cuban Missile Crisis was the central reason for the Cold War.Also Read : Indian Economic Development (1950-1990) : How Indian Economy Progressed After IndependenceWhat was Cold War Exactly?
The Cold War was more of a competition between the two superpowers USA and the USSR. Fortunately, it never got escalated into a full-scale war. There was an ideological difference between the USA and the USSR.
The Western alliance which was headed by the USA represented capitalist ideology while the Eastern alliance, headed by the USSR followed the socialistic ideology.

Two Power Blocs
Tumblr media
The world was sharply divided between the two power blocs, that is, the USA and the USSR. The USA and the Soviet Union were linked to their respective allies. The smaller States used to link to these two superpowers for their benefits and purposes. These smaller states got the promise of financial aid, weapons, and protection. Countries of Western Europe sided with the US and eastern Europe was with the Soviet Union. That’s why the two alliances were called the Eastern and the Western alliances.
The organization formed by the western alliance was known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). NATO came into existence in April 1949.
The eastern alliance was known as the Warsaw Pact, led by the Soviet Union. It was formed in 1955.
Non-Aligned Movement
Cold War: Countries outside the two superpower blocs, known as the non-aligned countries played a crucial role in reducing the Cold War conflicts. Jawaharlal Nehru was one of the key leaders of the Non-Aligned Movement.
The three leaders – India’s Jawaharlal Nehru, Yugoslavia’s leader Josip Broz and Egypt’s leader Gamal Abdel Naseer held a meeting in 1956. Sukarno, leader of Indonesia and Ghana’s chief Kwame Nkrumah strongly supported the above three leaders. These five leaders were the founders of NAM.
The first Non-Aligned summit was held in 1961 in Belgrade and was attended by 25 member states. Non-Alignment Movement grew into a popular International movement.

New International Economic Order
Most of the non-aligned countries were the Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Economic Development was necessary for the independence of the new countries. Without economic development and growth, these countries would have not been truly free. Therefore, the idea of a New International Economic Order (NIEO) originated.
The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) put forth a report, entitled “Towards a New Trade Policy for Development”. This report was submitted in 1972. The report proposed reform in the global trading system. The proposals were:-
Give LDC control over their natural resources which were earlier exploited by the developed Western countries.
Obtain access to LDCs in Western markets so that they could sell their products without any kind of restrictions
Reduce the costs of technology acquisition from Western countries.
Provide a greater role to LDCs in International economic institutions
Gradually, NAM became an economic pressure group.
India and the Cold War
India’s stand on the ongoing Cold War was two-fold
To stay away from the two alliances
To raise a voice against the newly independent country to join any of these alliances.
Jawaharlal Nehru’s non-aligned stance helped India in two ways
First, it allowed India to take International decisions for itself that served its interests.
Second, India could keep the balance between both superpowers. If India felt unduly pressured by one superpower then it could tilt towards the other. Neither of the alliance systems could take India for granted.
In the context of the Cold War, NAM contained some essence. It came out as the core of India’s effective foreign policy. NAM also encouraged the newly decolonized countries to pursue their independent foreign and geo-economic policy.

Dalam sesi bertajuk How to Adopt Growth Mindset and Revolutionize Your Business, Salman membagikan pengalaman Paragon melewati krisis demi krisis.

[Reposted from the KESENNUMA - BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE facebook page] “To us, March 11 is a day of great sadness. At the same time, it is a day to remember all the warmth, support, love, and encouragement you have given us in various ways. Thank you, world! Here’s how Kesennuma is doing nine years after the disaster. First, the bad news. Our biggest issue is the problem of population decline, which many cities share in Japan. The population of Kesennuma, which was about 75,000 before the earthquake, dropped to 62,000 by the end of January this year, a loss of about 13,000 residents. In the fishing industry, which is our key industry, the landing of fish has slowed from about 130,000 tons before the earthquake to 65,000 tons last year, and that has greatly affected the city’s economy. The number of tourists has also decreased, from 2.54 million visits before the disaster to 1.5 million last year. But here’s the good news: In the Land Readjustment Programs to elevate the land by 1.3 to 5.5 meters above sea level, Shishiori District completed this construction work in September of last year. This is the area where the large ship, No. 18 Shotokumaru, was swept inland by the tsunami. The ship was dismantled and removed in 2013, reflecting the residents’ vote against preservation. As for the three remaining Land Readjustment Programs in the areas MInami-Kesennuma, Sakanamachi/Minamimachi, and Matsuzaki-Katahama, the construction work and handing the land over to the owners will be finished by the end of March next year. All house-rebuilding for those who lost their homes to the tsunami will be completed by March 2021 as well. The city is determined to support the house-rebuilding to the very last person. The temporary housing that remains in two locations will then be disassembled and removed. The city will continue to support community building efforts and provide consultation and support services for those trying to adjust to new neighborhoods and ways of life. Our fish market has been renewed, and has operated under top-quality hygiene standards since last May. An innovative shipbuilding facility, created by the merger of four tsunami-stricken shipyards, was also completed last May. We remain the number one port for bonito catches for 23 years in a row—a piece of good news amid the worrisome record-low catches of saury and salmon. On our Oshima Island, the long-awaited Oshima Bridge opened last April to connect the island to the mainland, and a welcome terminal has just been completed on March 8 to serve as a new tourist information center and local specialty store. The adjacent restaurant-and-shop zone has been operating since last July. The access to the top of Mt. Kameyama is still under discussion. Before the disaster, a chair lift took visitors for a ride to the beautiful view from the top. This will not be easy to rebuild, due to funding and maintenance problems. In the meantime, occasional shuttle bus service takes passengers to the stunning panorama at the summit. We celebrated the reopening of Koizumi Beach last summer. Come and join us this July as we celebrate the opening of Oisehama Beach in Hashikami District! All four of these gorgeous beaches had been named among the 100 cleanest beaches in Japan, including Kodanohama Beach on Oshima Island, which reopened one year after the disaster, and Oya Beach, whose restoration is set for completion within the 2021 fiscal year. As for Oya Beach, a drivers' rest area called Michi-no-Eki, like others found throughout Japan, will be relocated in March 2021 on an ocean-view elevated Route 45, welcoming visitors with a local specialty store and eat-ins. The opening of the beach and the Michi-no-Eki will mean so much to us, and especially to the Oya residents who worked so hard in changing the original seawall plan to the present one to preserve the beautiful white-sand beach. The Memorial Park overlooking Kesennuma Bay will be completed this fall with a monument called Sail of Prayers, thanks to support given through crowd funding. For people to understand a tsunami and be prepared for any that may come, we opened a Memorial Museum last March, with a part of former Koyo High School preserved as it was right after the disaster. An impressive and extensive record of tsunamis is also found in our Rias Ark Museum. You have already seen on this Facebook page our entries about the opening of the Sanriku Expressway between Kesennuma Central and Kesennuma Port. The remaining Sanriku Expressway sections in Motoyoshi are planned for completion this December, bringing Sendai to a one-and-a-half-hour drive from us. The Karakuwa section including the Kesennuma Bay Bridge (its temporary name) will be completed by March 2021. The whole 360km between Sendai and Hachinohe in the northern part of Japan (Aomori) will be connected by the completion of the bridge. City Hall is scheduled to move from the inner bay area to the Tanakamae area where the city hospital used to stand. This was just announced in February; the timing has is yet to be determined. A BRT bus station may be built at the present city hall site, to allow easier access to the inner bay area where a new shopping zone opened last year near one already opened in 2017. Beer lovers, we now have a beer brewery in the area! We are participating in 2020 Tokyo Olympics as the Miyagi starting point for the torch relay in June. We are proud to be the host town for our friend, Indonesia. Well, that was pretty long to read, right? Although our struggle continues, we are happy that we have so much to report to you, and so fortunate to have people who care for us to read this all the way through. So let us repeat again loud and clear: THANK YOU, WORLD! This will be the last year of the city’s 10-year reconstruction plan. The city of Kesennuma will move forward so that we can proudly say, "Thanks to you all, we have become again the wonderful town you knew and loved ten years ago—and even better!!" Copernicus Sentinel-1 reveals shared plumbing led to Agung awakening
ESA - Sentinel-1 Mission logo. 22 February 2019 When Mount Agung in Indonesia erupted in 2017, the search was on to find out why it had stirred. Thanks to information on ground deformation from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission, scientists now have more insight into the volcano’s hidden secrets that caused it to reawaken. After lying dormant for more than 50 years, Mount Agung on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali rumbled back to life in November 2017, with smoke and ash causing airport closures and stranding thousands of visitors.
Volcanic uplift
Fortunately, it was preceded by a wave of small earthquakes, signalling the imminent eruption and giving the authorities time to evacuate around 100 000 people to safety. The prior event in 1963, however, claimed almost 2000 lives and was one of the deadliest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century. Knowing Agung’s potential for devastation, scientists have gone to great lengths to understand this volcano’s reawakening. And, Agung has remained active, slowly erupting on and off since 2017. Bali is home to two active stratovolcanoes, Agung and Batur, but relatively little is known of their underlying magma plumbing systems. A clue came from the fact that Agung’s 1963 eruption was followed by a small eruption at its neighbouring volcano, Batur, 16 km away.
Sentinel-1
A paper published recently in Nature Communications describes how a team of scientists, led by the University of Bristol in the UK, used radar data from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission to monitor the ground deformation around Agung. Their findings may have important implications for forecasting future eruptions in the area, and indeed further afield. They used the remote sensing technique of interferometric synthetic aperture radar, or InSAR, where two or more radar images over the same area are combined to detect slight surface changes. Tiny changes on the ground cause differences in the radar signal and lead to rainbow-coloured interference patterns in the combined image, known as a SAR interferogram. These interferograms can show how land is uplifting or subsiding. Juliet Biggs from Bristol University’s School of Earth Sciences, said, “Using radar data from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 radar mission and the technique of InSAR, we are able to map any ground motion, which may indicate that fresh magma is moving beneath the volcano.” In study, which was carried out in collaboration with the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation in Indonesia, the team detected uplift of about 8–10 cm on Agung’s northern flank during the period of intense earthquake activity prior to the eruption.
Radar vision
Fabien Albino, also from Bristol's School of Earth Sciences and who led the research, added, “Surprisingly, we noticed that both the earthquake activity and the ground deformation signal were five kilometres away from the summit, which means that magma must be moving sideways as well as vertically upwards. “Our study provides the first geophysical evidence that Agung and Batur volcanoes may have a connected plumbing system. “This has important implications for eruption forecasting and could explain the occurrence of simultaneous eruptions such as in 1963.” Part of European Union’s fleet of Copernicus missions, Sentinel-1 is a two-satellite constellation that can provide interferometric information every six days – important for monitoring rapid change. Each satellite carries an advanced radar instrument that can image Earth’s surface through cloud and rain and regardless of whether it is day or night. ESA’s Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission manager, Pierre Potin, noted, “We see the mission is being used for a multitude of practical applications, from mapping floods to charting changes in ice.
Agung from Copernicus Sentinel-2
“Understanding processes that are going on below the ground’s surface – as demonstrated by this new research – is clearly important, especially when these natural processes can put people’s lives and property at risk.” There are four Copernicus Sentinel missions in orbit so far, each carries state-of-the-art technology to deliver a stream of complementary imagery and data to monitor and manage the environment. Importantly, the data are free and open to users worldwide. The image on the right, for example, is from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, offering a ‘camera-like’ view of the Agung and Batur volcanoes. While the European Union is at the helm of Copernicus, ESA develops, builds and launches the dedicated Sentinel satellites. It also operates some of the missions and ensures the availability of data from third party missions contributing to the Copernicus programme. the industry’s biggest impact is on the DVD industry, which effectively met its destruction by mass popularizing online content. The emergence of streaming media has caused the fall of y DVD rental companies such as Blockbuster. In July 2020, an article from the New York Times published an article about Netflix DVD, No ches Frida 2s. It was stated that Netflix was continuing their DVD No. No Frida 2s with 5.3 million customers, which was a significant decrease from the previous year. On the other hand, their streaming, No ches Frida 2s, has 65 million members. In a March 2020 study that assessed “The Impact of movies of Streaming on Traditional DVD Movie Rentals” it was found that respondents did not buy DVD movies nearly as much, if ever, because streaming had taken over the market.
So we get more space adventures, more original story material and more about what will make this 21st MCU movie different from the previous 20 MCU films.
Watch Final Space Season 2 — Movie 6, viewers don’t consider the quality of movies to differ significantly between DVDs and online streaming. Problems that according to respondents need to be improved by streaming movies including fast forwarding or rewinding functions, and search functions. This article highlights that streaming quality movies as an industry will only increase in time, because advertising revenues continue to soar on an annual basis across industries, providing incentives for the production of quality content.

Watch  365 Days  The BD / BRRip Movie in DVDRip resolution looks better, however, because the encoding is from a higher quality source.
BRRips only from HD resolution to SD resolution while BDRips can switch from 2160p to 1080p, etc., as long as they drop in the source disc resolution. Watch  365 Days  Movie Full BDRip is not transcode and can move down for encryption, but BRRip can only go down to SD resolution because they are transcribed.
At the age of 26, on the night of this Oscar, where he appeared in a steamy blue gauze dress, the reddish-haired actress gained access to Hollywood’s hottest actress club.
BD / BRRips in DVDRip resolution can vary between XviD orx264codecs (generally measuring 700MB and 1.5GB and the size of DVD5 or DVD9: 4.5GB or 8.4GB) which is larger, the size fluctuates depending on the length and quality of release, but increasingly the higher the size, the more likely they are to use the x264 codec.
With its classic and secret beauty, this Californian from Sacramento has won the Summit. He was seen on “21 Jump Street” with Channing Tatum, and “Crazy Amy” by Judd Apatow. And against more prominent actresses like Jennifer Lawrence, Gal Gadot or Scarlett Johansson, Brie Larson signed a seven-contract deal with Marvel.
There is nothing like that with Watch The Curse of La Llorona Free Online, which is signed mainly by women. And it feels. When he’s not in a combination of full-featured superheroes, Carol Danvers runs Nirvana as greedy anti-erotic as possible and proves to be very independent. This is even the key to his strength: if the super hero is so unique, we are told, it is thanks to his ability since childhood, despite being ridiculed masculine, to stand alone. Too bad it’s not enough to make a film that stands up completely … Errors in scenarios and realization are complicated and impossible to be inspired.
There is no sequence of actions that are truly shocking and actress Brie Larson failed to make her character charming. Spending his time displaying scorn and ridicule, his courageous attitude continually weakens empathy and prevents the audience from shuddering at the danger and changes facing the hero. Too bad, because the tape offers very good things to the person including the red cat and young Nick Fury and both eyes (the film took place in the 1990s). In this case, if Samuel Jackson’s rejuvenation by digital technology is impressive, the illusion is only for his face. Once the actor moves or starts the sequence of actions, the stiffness of his movements is clear and reminds of his true age. Details but it shows that digital is fortunately still at a limit. As for Goose, the cat, we will not say more about his role not to “express”.
Already the 21st film for stable Marvel Cinema was launched 10 years ago, and while waiting for the sequel to The 100 Season 6 Movie war infinity (The 100 Season 6 Movie, released April 24 home), this new work is a suitable drink but struggles to hold back for the body and to be really refreshing. Let’s hope that following the adventures of the strongest heroes, Marvel aged to increase levels and prove better.

Unrecorded Memories and Missing Taiwan #1
Tumblr media
The Last Day of My Creativity and Entrepreneurship Class With Friends, Mainly from Indonesia and Thailand.
I remembered I went to Taiwan on July 2018 for a four weeks or one month summer exchange program in Asia University (1st July to 27th July). It was a very memorable journey even if it’s just for one month and I try to make the most out of it. I was really grateful that my roommates are outgoing so they would ask me out when they went out during the weekends. So, there were a lot of places I’ve visited thanks to them.
What I regretted most of my time in Taiwan is not jotting down the details of my excursion and the overall experience, although I did have pictures in exchange of that. But, honestly, I can’t believe I didn’t write down all of the key experience in Taiwan and only did one entry in my diary since my diary run out of pages for me to write on. I also only did one post about my time in Taiwan, which isn’t much since it’s just the beginning. It’s really such a shame since I forgot most of the details by now. It’s two years already.
So, for the sake of revisiting the memory lane back in 2018, I will try my best to write the times I spent there. Just because I wanted to and this memory is by far the most memorable one for me and really, I love writing about my experience regarding something. It’s a way for me to keep track of what I had done in my life.
1) I’ll start from the very beginning then; a way for me to refresh my memories. I’ll start by saying that I came this far to be able to fly to Taiwan because I’ve been taking care of the requirements, financial aid and visa alone. Also, I don’t have any friends that I knew who also participate in Asia University summer exchange program back in 2018. My close friend tried signing up but she was not accepted and contacted for the program, so I proceed alone at that time. Worried that I would be going alone to a faraway country for the very first time, my parents tagged along. Coincidentally, they had been to Japan around that year so they still can use their visa in Taiwan.
Tumblr media
Me, My Dad, My Mom and My Uncle in Taiwan’s Train Station
I was really glad that my parents decided to tagged along because it turns out I was not ready to go there alone. I turned out to be unprepared for a long journey and I was basically exhausted when we arrived there in the morning. I hadn’t bathe and I was feeling edgy but we still need to get going. Since we were in Taipei, the capital city, and my uncle works there, we decided to visit him for a short period of time for breakfast or lunch.
During our visit, aside from eating together, my uncle also help me set up the local SIM card so I will be able to phone and use the internet while I’m there. My dad wanted to explore Taipei when my uncle told him there were museums and whatnot near the place my uncle is staying, but when my dad asked me if I wanted to go, I refused. I was too tired and even fell asleep (I think) when my family were hanging out in a cafe. It’s a pity that I can’t spend more time exploring Taipei with my parents at that time.
After our short visit, we say our goodbyes, and headed to Taichung where my parents and I would be staying and also the city where my summer program would be held in.
2) My parents sent me off to Asia University, I think two or three days after staying together with me and then they went on to enjoy their holiday together. I think it was really nice. I stayed in the dorm in Asia University and moving in to new place is always strange. I don’t know why but the dorm in Taiwan normally don’t provide mattress, so I had to sleep at hard wood. The campus provided blankets and pillows although not for free so I only had one blanket and pillow during the first couple days I was there. I was really irritated at that time but fortunately a few days later my parents bought me extra sheets for me so I could sleep more comfortably.
Tumblr media
Behold, My Bed!
Okay, enough about my bed and the fact that I slept on the floor instead of the wooden bed for a few days before my roommates moved in. Yes, I was living alone in a dorm made for four people and it was really lonely since most of my friends from class were in different dorm than I am. I vaguely remembered that Asia University’s dorm building’s had names and I think mine was “Summit Hall” if I’m not wrong.
3) I apply for two course during the summer exchange and my first class was “Artificial Intelligence”. The students who signed up for this course were consists of mainly Indian students, some Thailand students and only one Singaporean and Indonesian student (which is me!). The first day was really awkward for me, since the AI course were the first summer course to start so they did some sort of opening speech from the International Student’s Affairs director. It was awkward for me because the director met my parents and I when they drop me off in Asia University, so he was asking how I was coping with the new environment in which I can’t really be honest with him (that I was actually uncomfortable).
Tumblr media
The First Day of AI course
We also did a little bit of orientation like introducing ourselves and trying to warm up with each other. I was always very anxious when I’m in a new environment but I was glad that the classmates sitting besides me were friendly. I think I was very lucky that I get to sit with them when we just randomly choose our sitting arrangements which later kinda become our permanent seating since everyone’s comfortable with that. I still remember vividly that the one who sat to my right side was a Singaporean student from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) named Xin Feng. While the one who sat on my left side was a Thai student who was called Guy (he’s name is very long and almost all Thai student have nickname). Xin Feng and I hit off pretty well because we’re both girls and she came from Singapore which is a country I often frequent so talking to her was much more easier for me. Guy on the other hand strike the first conversation with me which made it easier for me to converse with both seatmates.
Tumblr media
The Learning Atmosphere during The AI Course
I don’t know about the other students, but I remembered having both of them sitting beside me for the entire course. While the other Thailand students always sit the opposite sides of ours. I think Guy can hit off well with others since he have good English skills and because of that he sometimes helps his Thai friends in translating Thai to English and vice versa when they have difficulty with the language. Xin Feng on the other hand are good with Chinese so she could converse well with the professor in their mother tongue. Sometimes, I would tag along when Xin have questions for the professors and when he explained it in Chinese, I understood it better than when the professor explained it in English.
Taking AI course when I’m in my second year of studies are quite challenging. Most of the students in the AI course were computer science undergraduate and they understood more or less what the professor said in class while me and the other students who didn’t major in that field were struggling. It was the first time for me to learn how to use Python language and we also dived into topics such as machine learning, deep learning, etc which is very complicated for me since it’s the first time I’ve heard of that. I think I could only remembered bits of it and through this course I was able to learn Python much earlier than my friends who are from the same major as I am, since we only learned Python much later in the semester. I also learned to utilize tools like Google Colab from the course which I think is very useful and simple since we didn’t have to set up anything unlike when we code in our computers, and I still used it from time to time.
Catching up with the course for only two weeks are very hard, but the AI course weren’t all about studying especially since we’re in Taiwan. We also had our share of fun and activities in the city, and I’ll tell more about it in the next part, so stay tune!
(to be continued...)
-Reina
PS. I don’t always make a part by part post but this is going to be long because I intend to retell a lot of details and share a lot of pictures. And its morning already!

Sanctuaries
Tumblr media
My favorite refuge: The view from the summit of my backyard park
I’ve been thinking a lot about sanctuaries lately.  Defined as “a place of refuge or safety; a nature reserve; or a holy place,” the meaning of the word is entirely interpretable by each individual.
Recently, the term has proliferated in reference to US cities who claim they will protect migrants from a certain unnameable leader’s xenophobic policies.  Unthinkably, this same buffoon has even threathened to withhold coronavirus relief funding to such cities if they continue to harbor “unwanted” residents.
It seems, for every sanctuary, there exist forces who want to threaten them.  This is as true of religious persecution around the world, as it is with safe houses for women escaping violence.
In our Lullaby Project, Instruments of Change works quite intimately with this population.  Through this time, we’ve been fortunate to continue supporting single mothers to write original songs about their hopes and dreams for their children.  What we’ve learned from them is that, ironically, while many of us have struggled to self-isolate at home, these women have never felt safer, with the prospect of being found, or of unwelcomed visits from their abusers temporarily lifted.
In Women Rock, another program that we’ve shifted to digital engagement through Google Classroom, our participants have written a secular choral hymn identifying nature as the sanctuary that has provided them the most solace during this time.   A verse from their song, Hidden Symphonies is below.
Listen to the silence
Morning bird calls at play
Soul refreshing music
Through isolation days
It is interesting that more and more evidence suggests people rarely catch the virus while outdoors (https://globalnews.ca/news/6906508/coronavirus-outdoors-parks-closed/).  Intuitively, this resonates with me, as someone who has always found sanctuary staying active outdoors. So, while experts stress that social distancing in public parks is still necessary, simply sharing these wild places six feet away from strangers has been a blessing.
Art has always been another refuge for many.   And it’s no wonder some artists have been turning to nature as their canvas.  The Swiss artist, Saype’s work is perhaps the most ambitious example.  His stunning ephemeral piece, Beyond Crisis, made with biodegradable spray paint, is designed to fade naturally as the grass grows, in much the same way we all hope this virus will eventually disappear once nature takes its course (with ample cooperation from humans).

And finally, another creative community, in Sag Harbour, NY, has found an inventive way to share their work while galleries are closed.  Barns, front yards, and back gardens have become museum walls for dozens of installations that locals are welcome to view, as safely distant drive-bys.  https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/11/arts/design/drive-by-art-long-island.html?action=click&module=Well&pgtype=Homepage&section=Art%20%20Design

Daily Delights
Tumblr media
I have also been trying to hone my lens for finding a different kind of art in nature.  With time to slow down and stay close to home, I have paid much closer attention to the little wonders that surround me.  I began the practice of doing this shortly before self-isolation, when I learned about Ross Gay’s poetic essays collected in his book Daily Delights. https://www.amazon.ca/Book-Delights-Essays-Ross-Gay/dp/1616207922
As if prophetically, NPR featured him on my favorite podcast This American Life, in late January.  https://www.thisamericanlife.org/692/the-show-of-delights
And this reminder, to savor life’s small pleasures was exactly the armor I needed for this period.  Since February, I’ve kept my own daily delights journal.  And here are just a few snapshots that have made the cut since quarantine began.

Radio Days
While so much has changed about my daily rhythms, of late, there are a few pillars that I’ve kept in place to give my life some necessary scaffolding, in order to maintain a sense of familiarity and grounding.
One of these is the ritual that my partner and I have had for years, of listening to This American Life every weekend.  Ira Glass’s strangely pleasing-though-nasally drone has accompanied hundreds of our road trips to mountains, lakes and forests, as we’ve sought weekend adventure. But for now, living room listenting has had to suffice.
On May 4th, the show just happened to be honored with the first ever Pulitzer Prize for audio journalism.  So, that’s a well-earned feather in a podcast’s cap.  But, awards or not, their carefully curated slices of life never fail to amuse and inspire.
Interestingly, I think more and more people are turning to podcasts, perhaps as an antidote to screen fatigue, and also because it seems to align with the nostalgia for days past that is so alive right now.  So, I wanted to suggest a few podcasts that might particularly resonate at the moment.
If it’s a longing for “other” that’s calling you, there is an incredible website called Radio Garden that lets you travel anywhere in the world, to sonically “drop-in” to whatever environment intrigues you (http://radio.garden/listen/alpha-boys-school-radio/ijKUlByg). For a real time sense of what moves people across the globe, you can experience the music, stories, and language of cultures from Antanarivo to Zagreb, with just a spin of their online globe and a simple click.  Here, you can access literally thousands of radio stations.  However, in my experience, their interface works best on a Chrome rather than Safari browser.
Early in quarantine, when I was in sorest need of a good laugh, This American Life put together an episode on fiascos that really helped bring levity at a time when we all began to feel our world fall apart.  https://www.thisamericanlife.org/699/fiasco
Tumblr media
And speaking of when things fall apart, Buddhist nun Pema Chodron’s book of the same name has served as a sort of bible for many westerners, as they’ve turned to the ancient Tibetan tradition in which she was ordained.  Another podcast favorite of mine is Krista Tippet’s On Being.  And her most recent May 7thepisode featured herself and musician/meditator Devandra Banhart alternatively reading passages from this sage book, while reflecting on its relevance for the times.

Finding Bliss
Tumblr media
Ai Weiwei’s 2010 “Grapes”, with a coincidental resemblance to the coronavirus
Interviewed about how he’s responding to the virus, Ai Weiwei replied, “I never create anything.  I just try to cope with the situation at hand.” We all need coping tools and strategies for those times when things fall apart.  Ai Weiwei’s plainspoken answer sounds almost religious, the way he describes art as his salve.  And this makes sense to me.  But for many years, faith in an actual religion never did.  Raised as a half-Catholic, half-Jewish Unitarian, I only attended services until I was about 11, when Sunday youth orchestra rehearsals took their place.  So, I never fully understood the role of weekly church service until we travelled to India, for 10-days of Dalai Lama teachings.  This annual offering, which he made for 30 years, was an even greater gift than we expected, given that these Kalichakra teachings ceased just after our 2007 trip, unbeknowst to us.   Every day, for 5 hours, 1,000s of seekers flocked to the grounds of his Dharamsala temple, and listened by radio simulcast, in 1 of 17 native tongues, to his special blend of humor and clarity.  Each day, we all left bubbling to the rim with reaffirmed intention to be our best selves.  The coffeeshops, all over town, were a twitter with armchair philosophy between strangers trying to understand and integrate his words.   Uncanny kindnesses abounded.  And you could feel our resolve get ever more reinforced with each return to his daily talks. However, it’s only once we left Dharmasala, with equally grand intentions to “remember”,  that I recognized the role of these daily infusions. Because with each passing day, best behaviors, careful speech, and pure thoughts deterioritated, if only a little at a time.
Tumblr media
Note the curly-haired, golden-sweatered sore thumb in this sea of burgundy-robed monks...
So, while that did not instill in me a renewed church-going tradition, I have found my own ways to be “reminded.”  They’ve just come in different forms.
For Geoff, it’s long runs and bike rides that serve as his spiritual medicine.  And for me, it’s a panoply of things.  Sometimes its communion with nature.  Other times yoga.  Writing. Handstand therapy.  Or even what my favorite yoga teacher likes to call “Hammock Enlightenment.”
Eoin Finn is an artist of the highest order.   Good living is his canvas.  The body is his brush.  And bliss is his paint.  He calls his teaching Blissology, and spreads his backbends, heart-openers, and ocean loving vibes from Indonesia to Byron Bay.
Tumblr media
He and his family have been quarantining in Bali, since they were leading teacher trainings there, just before global travel nearly shut down. And fortunately, he continues to extend his generous spirit through free weekly livestream Stay Om yoga classes, on Facebook.  If you happen to miss his 5 pm Sunday classes, the videos remain online to follow any time. So, I hope some of you take the opportunity to worship the DUDE (Delight in Universal Divine Energy) with him some time. I promise there will be plenty more acronymns and puns where that one came from.  Plus, a good dose of deep stretches for your limbs and soul.

Birthday Bash
Those who know me are aware of the special challenges birthdays pose for my creativity.  I relish the quest for the perfect homemade card, surprise gift, Bitmoji or GIF for a friend or family member.  And I love throwing a good bash.   I am also aware of the undue pressure this has caused my partner, over the years, to come up with a reciprocal gesture or party idea.  But given the added constraints of a quarantine, Geoff went over and above the call of duty this year to produce!
While the novelty of Zoom parties had already worn off, he still managed to find a brilliant way for my loved ones to send serial video messages throughout the day, with the bonus of a clever twist.  I’m not quite sure how he found the time, in his manic 70-hour work weeks, to put this together.  But, 43 clues later, I was delivered a personalized crossword puzzle, with each hint related to the messenger.  He really outdid himself this time, and I could not feel more grateful.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meanwhile, unsure if he had anything up his sleeve, I got up to my own fun messying my hands to make this Covid Pinata.  I confess, I borrowed the idea from an article I saw online, but just couldn’t resist.
And last night, of course with proper social distancing, we took great delight in beating the crap out of this brutal virus with a couple of friends.

Defending champion PV Sindhu eyes turnaround at World Tour Finals - other sports
Tumblr media
Enduring a rough patch since claiming the world championship gold, ace Indian shuttler P V Sindhu would be eager to turnaround her fortunes when she begins her title defence at the season-ending BWF World Tour Finals here on Wednesday.Sindhu registered her career’s biggest triumph at the World Championship in Basel, Switzerland in August, but since then the Indian looked awfully out of form. The Olympic silver medallist, who had reached the finals of Indonesia Open Super 750 tournament in July, made two first-round exits at Korea Open and Fuzhou China Open and went down in the second round in three events -- China Open Super 1000, Denmark Open Super 750 and Hong Kong Open Super 500.Her only quarterfinal finish was at the USD 750,000 French Open.Only the top 8 on the BWF Race to Guangzhou Rankings qualifies for the World Tour Finals and Sindhu ended the year at the 15th spot but still made it to the women’s singles field by virtue of being the world champion.Despite the recent dip in form, all eyes will be on Sindhu as she has the reputation of producing her best in major events. The Indian had taken a break after the Hong Kong Open to be in the best shape for the World Finals, where she has twice reached the summit clash in 2017 and 2018.This time, Sindhu has been placed in group A alongside Chinese duo of Chen Yu Fei and He Bing Jiao and Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi, while Group B consists of the rest four shuttlers -- Taiwanese Tai Tzu Ying, Thai duo of Ratchanok Intanon and Busanan Ongbamrungphan and Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara.Sindhu will open her campaign against Akane Yamaguchi, who has claimed two titles at Indonesia and Japan before a hip problem saw her make four straight first round exits. However, the Japanese showed signs of regaining her form with semifinal finishes at French Open, Hong Kong Open and Korea Masters. The world no 6 Indian has a healthy 10-6 head-to-head record against Yamaguchi but she lost to the Japanese in the last two meetings.Against Chen Yu Fei too, Sindhu enjoys a 6-3 record but the Chinese has been in rampaging form this season, having won all six of her finals, including the All England Championships.Sindhu, however, lost nine times to He Bing Jiao with four of them coming in their last four encounters. The Chinese won the Korea Open, besides finishing runner-ups at India Open and Badminton Asia Championships. Source link Read the full article

Hima Das: the Story of India’s Golden Girl
Hima Das, otherwise called the "Dhing Express", is an Indian run sprinter from Assam. The 19-year-old holds the present Indian national record in 400 meters with planning of 50.79 seconds that she timed at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, Indonesia. Das is likewise the primary Indian competitor to ever win a gold medal in a track occasion at the IAAF World U20 Championships.
Hima Das Early Life
Tumblr media
Hima Das was conceived in a poor family close Kandhulimari town in Assam's Nagaon area on 9 January. Her folks, Ronjit and Jonali Das have a place with the indigenous Kaibarta people group. Them two do cultivating to help the family.
She did her place of graduation at the Dhing Public High School. There Das was keen on playing football, a game she would play with the young men. Despite the fact that she wished to keep playing football, Hima was encouraged to change her inclination to dashing.
It was Shamshul Sheik, an instructor at the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, who gave the most significant snippet of data to the youth subsequent to watching her mind boggling speed while playing football. What pursued is history.
Hima Das Early Success
Hima 's accomplishment is considerably increasingly astounding in the event that we think about that she began utilizing spikes just a few years back. The oldest of the six kin, Hima's better ability previously came than light at a between region meet in 2016.
Because of the inaccessibility of an expert running track, she needed to rehearse on a sloppy football field.
Be that as it may, regardless of the absence of preparing offices and hardware accessible, the strong sprinter scalped a bronze award in the state meet. Soon thereafter, she arrived at the 100m last at the lesser nationals.
In the end, Das qualified for the ladies' 200m occasion at the Asian Youth Championships, Bangkok. She proceeded to complete seventh in the competition.
In any case, her season of 24.52 seconds was fortunately enough to meet all requirements for the World Youth Championships to be held in Nairobi. There, Das in the long run completed at the fifth spot with a general time of 24.31 seconds.
How Hima Das rose to progress
Tumblr media
After the underlying improvement, Hima Das based on that accomplishment to contend well in the 2018 Commonwealth Games at Gold coast, Australia in April 2018.
She was contending in the 400 meters just as the 4×400 meters hand-off. In the previous, Das arrived at the last. In any case, she needed to do the trick herself with a 6th spot complete that arrived in a period of 51.32 seconds.
Her planning was simply 1.17 seconds more than Botswana's gold medalist Amantle Montsho. The 4×400 meters transfer was likewise baffling since the Indian group could just complete seventh in the last. They had a planning of 3 minutes and 33.61 seconds.
At that point On 12 July 2018, Das tasted her first-since forever win. Her lady achievement came in the 400m last at the World U-20 Championships 2018 held at Tampere in Finland. She had timed 51.46 seconds to arrive at the summit.
In addition, she had turned into the main Indian sprinter to ever win a gold award at a global track occasion. In the match, her run was more slow in the main half. Be that as it may, she auspicious quickened in the last 100-meter extend. Das won the challenge in sensational style, surpassing upwards of three contenders to get the top distinctions.
Hima Das at Asian Games
Tumblr media
The 2018 Asian Games was a comparative story. Das qualified for the 400m last, checking 51.00 in warmth 1 and setting another Indian national record. On 26 August 2018, she bettered the national record to 50.79 seconds in the 400m last.
All the more significantly, she won the silver award. After four days, Das, in relationship with M. R. Poovamma, Sarita Gayakwad and V. K. Vismaya scripted history. The group of four won the ladies' 4 × 400 meters transfer by timing a mind blowing time of 3:28.72.
This was a fitting remuneration for Hima, who had neglected to meet all requirements for the last of the 200 meters race prior around the same time. It was a bogus begin in the elimination round that had let her down in those days.
Hima likewise won a silver award in the 4×400 m blended transfer to finish a record-breaking pull at the mainland event.
It was the first occasion when that such a blended occasion was held at the Asian Games.
Deal With Adidas
Tumblr media
When she returned back home in September, a shock was sitting tight for her. As though a reward for her enormous achievement in Jakarta, sportswear organization Adidas India marked Hima Das for an underwriting bargain. The
organization, in an announcement, said that the competitor would be furnished with the best items that Adidas brings to the table for Das' hustling and athletic needs. Besides, she was given a specially crafted shoe.
Further Accolades
Matured just 18, Hima Das was consulted with the Arjuna Award by President, Shri Ram Nath Kovind in 2018 for brilliance in Athletics, in a sparkling service, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on September 25, 2018.
The Government of Assam further delegated her as the state's image diplomat for games.
Soon thereafter, UNICEF-India delegated the Asian Games gold-medalist sprinter as India's first since forever youth minister.
Moreover, the Indian government would give Hima Das 'start to finish' financing until the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Hima Das was conceived in a joint group of 17 in the Kandhulimari town close Dhing in Assam to Ranjit and Jonali Das. Her folks have a place with the indigenous Kaibarta people group. Them two do cultivate to help the family.
As Ranjit was a quick sprinter himself, he saw no motivation to deny Hima from seeking after the run. He saw "genuine enthusiasm" in Hima, as indicated by him. Be that as it may, it was Jonali who had certain reservations with her choice to run. This was common, considering Hima's calling expected her to head out to far away puts, all alone. Awards and achievements.

Hong Kong, China - Part 2
Day 67 – Hong Kong
Waking up to an overcast morning, Christie and I pulled on our gym clothes and running shoes to begin the ascent up Victoria Peak. Starting at HKU and climbing to the summit, we followed the Lung Fu Shan Fitness Trail, winding up the 552-metre mountain. After far too much time on overnight trains and in transit over recent weeks – it was nice to stretch our legs and get some exercise in! (And not to mention…work off a bit of our dim sum consumption! ☺)
Tumblr media
Victoria Peak
As we arrived at Victoria Peak, we were quickly joined by swarms of tourists emerging from the tram – and were very happy about our decision to hike! Stopping for a quick matcha break, we strolled around the walkways near the peak, taking in the impressive skyline and harbour below.
Using Christie’s MapsMe app (our trusty guide throughout China – showing trails as well as roads!), we began to hike down the mountain, rapidly leaving the buzzing crowds behind. As we descended, we wound along Old Peak Road through the forest, passing a series of lavish properties– with sky-high prices to match the equally stunning views! Although the descent was a bit of a kneeknacker for us, walking provided us with a fascinating glimpse into this prestigious, secluded neighbourhood.
Nearing the Mid-Levels, we decided to “off road” it a bit more, taking a hard left onto one of the tiny trails shown on MapsMe. This narrow, overgrown footpath was unusual, located in the forest directly above a block of pastel apartments hugging the base of the mountain. We followed the path along a crumbling channel, leading to a landslide of rocks, and up steep steps hewn from bare rocks. Long chains lined the vertical ascent, providing much needed stabilization. The trail seemed a bit mysterious to us at the time – with very little traffic, many technical sections and overgrown fences. I later Googled this trail – and with the limited info I could find, it appears that this was a section of the Cheung Po Tsai Ancient Trail – a secret path used by an infamous pirate (of the same name) several centuries ago!
Tumblr media
Mid-Levels
Taking a break the afternoon, I amped myself up to wash my clothes for the first time since Greece, as I had gotten pretty creative with “acceptable” outfits over the previous days – the definition of “clean” becoming more and more loosely interpreted. Having passed 2 months of travel at this point, my makeup routine had been pared down to sunscreen and mascara, my hair was usually in a braid, and I was repeating outfits constantly. Low maintenance was taking on a new meaning for me, and I was beginning to relish the minimalism and simplicity of long-term travel. There was something incredibly freeing about knowing exactly what belongings I had with me (down to the number of socks!), and exactly what purpose they served. Any new item to be added had to be carefully considered, as I would ultimately be carrying it.
I also began to notice a few other inner changes as I moved beyond the trip’s two-month mark. The nervous anticipation I often experienced when arriving in a new country or city began to wane. In the past, I would usually deal with this by hyper-planning an itinerary, knowing exactly how I would spend my few weeks off, and mapping out every step I would take to get from point A to B to C. Although my organized, planning personality never switched off, around this time I noticed that my threshold for dealing with uncertainty and unpredictable situations had significantly increased. As I become more at ease in the new and wonderful places I was discovering, I also noticed a change in my ability to be present – something I have always struggled with. The combined simplicity and novelty that comes with long-term travel felt like its own kind of medicine, encouraging a lifestyle where I could “stop and smell the flowers” (or in Hong-Kong’s case, incense and dim-sum!) and really appreciate the current moment. In my trip journal, I promised myself that I would bring elements of this lifestyle back to Canada with me.
As the evening fell, Christie and I walked over to Central Pier, where we boarded one of the historic Star Ferries to cross the harbour to Kowloon. Chatting with our parents earlier in the afternoon, they told us that they also took the same ferry on their world trip – over 30 years earlier! Turning back while we traversed the busy waterway, the sparkling skyline of Hong Kong rose behind us, framed by the dark silhouette of Victoria Peak. Massive neon billboards and light displays were mounted on many of the skyscrapers, their vivid colours reflected in the rippling water of the harbour.
Tumblr media
Symphony of Lights
Disembarking at the pier, we walked along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront on time to catch the Symphony of Lights, Hong Kong’s nightly light, music and laser show. Almost 50 buildings on both sides of Victoria Harbour are involved with this nightly show, setting the city and water ablaze with sparkling light displays, choreographed to music from the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Incorporating traditional Chinese flutes and strings, and Mandarin singers, the Symphony of Lights was completely mesmerizing.
Following the light show, Christie and I began to explore the neighbourhood of Tsim Sha Sui, meandering along wide, modern boulevards packed with luxury retailers, navigating through a scramble of shoppers hurrying in every direction. One of the main shopping areas of Hong Kong, this neighbourhood is home to many high-end flagship stores, often with long lines trailing outside their entrances. Hong Kong’s reputation as being a “city that never sleeps” was perfectly exemplified in this neighbourhood, as the crowds only seemed to grow as the evening went on. Wandering away from the large shopping crowds, Christie and I stopped for our final dinner together in Hong Kong, before she returned to Canada the next morning!
Tumblr media
Tsim Sha Tsui
Day 68-69 – Hong Kong
After a glamorous breakfast of microwave noodles (our umpteenth of the trip!) Christie boarded the metro to the airport. I missed her almost immediately. The two of us had travelled together many times before, but nowhere as big or as different as China. It was pretty amazing having her around for this part of my trip – and aside from our not-so-occasional bickering (as sisters do!) we make pretty good travel buddies. Christie always challenges me to think outside of the box, and no conversation or topic is ever off the table. I’m very thankful to have her as my sister, and know for a fact that having her around makes me a better person. This trip was no exception.
Fortunately, I had blocked most of my remaining 3 days in Hong Kong for a bit of R&R and trip planning – which I quickly realized how much I needed. Scanning through the news after Christie left, stories had begun to pour in about Mount Agung, an active volcano in Bali - which was erupting! A large plume of volcanic ash had risen several kilometres into the air around the volcano, disrupting hundreds of flights in the region. Somewhat problematic, as I was set to fly to Bali, Indonesia in less than 72 hours! Given that the airports in both Bali and Lombok looked set to close, I jumped into action - brainstorming alternative plans, and crowd-sourcing other suggestions for diving destinations between China and Australia.
I ended up re-routing my flights to Cairns, Australia, skipping over Indonesia completely. I was very keen to do my open-water diving certification at this point in my trip, and was thrilled to be returning to the reef. The Campbell family had taken a trip there over a decade earlier, where we spent a few days snorkelling in some of the most spectacular waters I have ever seen. Fortunately I was able to find last minute accommodation in Cairns, and crossed my fingers that I would be able to enrol in a dive school once I arrived.
Day 70 – Lantau Island
Well rested for my final day in China, I ventured down to the Central Pier in the morning to board a high-speed ferry to Lantau Island, the largest outlying island of Hong Kong. A mountainous area scattered with fishing villages along its shores, Lantau Island has a much lower population density than the rest of Hong Kong – and was a welcome reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the city. Travelling to Lantau Island by Ferry was equally enjoyable – the weather was mild enough to sit above deck and admire the city’s skyline as it got progressively smaller.
Tumblr media
Star Ferries
Arriving at Mui Wo Ferry Pier, I boarded a local bus to the fishing village of Tai O. Winding through the luscious forest around Lanteau Peak, we passed by the beautiful sandy beaches of Pui O and Tong Fuk along our route. After a scenic 20-minute journey across the island, our bus arrived at the picturesque fishing community. An incredible example of a traditional Southern Chinese fishing village, stilt homes lined a narrow ocean inlet, built to withstand the rise and fall of the tide. Framed by a backdrop of mountains, Buddhist temples and shrines could be seen in the distance, nestled into the surrounding hillside.
Tumblr media
Tai O Fishing Village
My strongest memory of Tai O was the smell – as it was indeed a very active fishing port. As one vendor joked with me, “good for the eyes, not so much the nose!” Meandering through the narrow stilted streets and rickety bridges, I took in all the harbour activity, with small boats putting in and out of the channel, packed full with nets and rigging. Tai O continues to operate a traditional seafood market, with massive quantities of fresh and dried seafood for sale (from a full-size, dried shark, to pufferfish that have been blown up and turned into decorative items!). Small boat tours are also frequent, taking visitors out into the nearby ocean to search for the rare pink dolphins that inhabit the waters.
I walked through the length of the seafood market to the footbridges entering the stilted neighbourhoods. Leaving the tourism hub behind, I spent the next half hour wandering the footpaths and bridges lining the channel, circling back around to my starting point. I appreciated getting to see the community that has been built around this one industry of fishing. Even away from the main market, fish were everywhere – drying on corrugated tin roofs, being hauled out of boats, and being cleaned and filleted in people’s homes, their doors wide open to the footpaths outside.
Tumblr media
Dried Fish and Seafood for Sale in Tai O
Returning to the main village, I boarded another bus, which began to wind up the mountains to visit the highlands of Ngong Ping, located near Lantau Peak. Most famously known for being home to the Tian Tan Buddha, or “Giant Buddha”, this sacred site was easily visible long before we arrived – with the bronze Buddha standing at 34-metres tall!
Walking through Ngong Ping Village towards the Giant Buddha, and through the gates of Po Lin Monastery, I was surprised to immediately notice cows – everywhere. Grazing next to the landscaped walkways of the monastery, the cows were thoroughly unperturbed by the passing groups of people. In Buddhist Culture, cattle are considered to be sacred, and it was clear in Ngong Ping that they had the run of the place!
Tumblr media
Tian Tan Buddha
I arrived at the base of the stone stairs leading to the Giant Buddha, and began to climb the 268 steps to the top. Altars filled with smoking incense lined the stairs, with Buddhists stopping every few steps to bow and pray. Facing North, this Buddha is pointed towards China, intended to act as a guardian for the mainland. Arriving at the top of the stairs to the Tian Tan Buddha, the scale was more impressive than ever. With an incredible view over the lush landscape of Lantau Island and the nearby Po Lin Monastery, the Giant Buddha is sitting cross-legged on a lotus throne, circled by six smaller bronze statues, facing the Buddha to provide offerings. Meandering the walkways and grounds of the monastery for some time, I caught a bus back to Mui Wo, boarding a ferry back into the city just as evening fell.

For my final evening in Hong Kong, I headed out to Causeway Bay, one of the busiest neighbourhoods on the island – and centered around one thing: SHOPPING. I hopped off the MTR in Causeway Bay and first headed to Hong Kong’s Times Square. Although much smaller than its NYC counterpart, seeing this neon-lit square at night was impressive, packed with high-rises filled with thousands of shops and boutiques, multi-storied shiny billboards, and a blur of video screens in every direction. “Overwhelming” would be an understatement when describing this neighbourhood! The massive, vertical malls in this compact area had everything one could possible want to buy – from high-end fashion, electronics, skin products, novelty snacks, vintage finds – the list goes on and on. I spent the next few hours going up and down on elevators in different buildings, getting thoroughly lost in the consumer chaos around me. Amidst Hong Kong’s shopping pandemonium, I was thrilled to stumble across Triple O’s – a favourite Vancouver burger joint, and a welcome taste of home after almost three months on the road. Not a bad way to end the China leg of my trip!

The Largest Cat
When a man wants to murder a tiger, he calls it sport; when a tiger wants to murder him, he calls it ferocity.
-George Bernard Shaw.
George Bernard Shaw died in 1950, but his words remain true today. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), poaching is the biggest threat to the diminishing tiger population. In 2014, the IUCN estimated there were between 2,154 to 3,159 tigers left in the wild.In 2015, Animal Planet estimated there were about 2,500 tigers left in the wild. In 2018, BBC news reported there were approximately 3,890 tigers living in the wild. Thanks to conservation efforts, wild tiger population numbers are slowly rising. But we cannot pat ourselves on the back yet. We must continue to protect our wild tigers from poachers and other threats they face.
Poachers have found ways to capture and mass produce tigers to the point where it is more tigers in captivity than in the wild. Tigers are caught in the wild and bred on “tiger farms.” The first tiger farm was established in 1986 and now there are hundreds of them. On these farms, baby tigers are taken from their mothers at birth. In the wild, baby tigers remain with their mothers for at least 2 years to learn how to be a tiger. The farms rob the babies of their natural upbringing. The babies are raised in a cruel world of being forced to participate in tourist traps. Once the babies reach maturity, they are murdered for their parts. Poachers treat tigers as if they are inanimate objects or products to be sold instead of living breathing mammals we are supposed to share the earth with.
Fortunately, I am not the only one who sees poaching as a major issue for tigers. Steps have been and still are being taken to conserve the earth’s tigers. In 2010, a Tiger Summit was held in St. Petersburg, Russia. At the summit, 13 countries where tigers remain in the wild (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailand, and Vietnam) came together and pledged to double the tiger population by 2022. The following goals were also established at the summit:
-Effectively preserve, manage, enhance, and protect tiger habitats
-Eradicate poaching, smuggling, and illegal trade of tigers, their parts, and derivatives
-Cooperate in transboundary landscape management and in combating illegal trade
-Engage with indigenous local communities
-Increase the effectiveness of tiger and habitat management
-Restore tigers to their former range
Since the summit, wild tiger populations have slowly increased. India and Nepal reported population recoveries around 2014. It is good news that conservation efforts are proving to be effective. However, that is not enough. The tiger farms are inhumane and we must figure out a way to get all of them shut down. The tiger population will never naturally flourish if poachers are still out there and tiger products are still in high demand. Tigers don’t deserve to be hunted for sport, manufactured on farms, and/or killed for trophies, accessories, mythological medicinal practices, or luxury goods. No living breathing entity deserves that fate.
