Clarence Thomas secretly accepted luxury trips from a major GOP donor
Island-hopping on a superyacht. Private jet rides around the world. The undisclosed gifts to Thomas have no known precedent in the modern history of the Supreme Court. “It’s incomprehensible to me that someone would do this,” says one former judge.
IN LATE JUNE 2019, right after the U.S. Supreme Court released its final opinion of the term, Justice Clarence Thomas boarded a large private jet headed to Indonesia. He and his wife were going on vacation: nine days of island-hopping in a volcanic archipelago on a superyacht staffed by a coterie of attendants and a private chef.
If Thomas had chartered the plane and the 162-foot yacht himself, the total cost of the trip could have exceeded $500,000. Fortunately for him, that wasn’t necessary: He was on vacation with real estate magnate and Republican megadonor Harlan Crow, who owned the jet — and the yacht, too.

For more than two decades, Thomas has accepted luxury trips virtually every year from the Dallas businessman without disclosing them, documents and interviews show. A public servant who has a salary of $285,000, he has vacationed on Crow’s superyacht around the globe. He flies on Crow’s Bombardier Global 5000 jet. He has gone with Crow to the Bohemian Grove, the exclusive California all-male retreat, and to Crow’s sprawling ranch in East Texas. And Thomas typically spends about a week every summer at Crow’s private resort in the Adirondacks.
The extent and frequency of Crow’s apparent gifts to Thomas have no known precedent in the modern history of the U.S. Supreme Court.
These trips appeared nowhere on Thomas’ financial disclosures. His failure to report the flights appears to violate a law passed after Watergate that requires justices, judges, members of Congress and federal officials to disclose most gifts, two ethics law experts said. He also should have disclosed his trips on the yacht, these experts said.

Clarence Thomas and the generosity of a far-right dark-money billionaire
Tumblr media
Clarence Thomas has set some important precedents in his career as a Supreme Court justice — for example, the elevation of the unrepentant rapist Brett Kavanaugh to the bench could never have occurred but for the trail blazed by Thomas as a sexually harassing, pubic-hair distributing creep boss:
https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2021/10/01/30-years-after-her-testimony-anita-hill-still-wants-something-from-joe-biden-514884
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/06/clarence-thomas/#harlan-crow
Today, Thomas continues to steer the court into new territory — for example, he’s interested in banning same-sex marriage again:
https://www.politico.com/news/2022/06/24/thomas-constitutional-rights-00042256
And of course, he’s set precedent by hearing cases related to the attempted overthrow of the US government, despite the role his wife played in the affair:
https://www.npr.org/2022/03/30/1089595933/legal-ethics-experts-agree-justice-thomas-must-recuse-in-insurrection-cases
Thomas is not alone in furthering the right’s mission to destroy the morale of constitutional law scholars by systematically delegitimizing the court and showing it to be a vehicle for partisan politics and dark money policy laundering, but he is certainly at the vanguard:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/25/consequentialism/#dotards-in-robes
Today, Propublica published an expose on the vast fortune in secret gifts bestowed upon Thomas by the billionare GOP megadonor Harlan Crow, who is also one the most significant funders of political campaigns that put business before Thomas and the Supreme Court:
https://www.propublica.org/article/clarence-thomas-scotus-undisclosed-luxury-travel-gifts-crow
The story, reported by Joshua Kaplan, Justin Elliott and Alex Mierjeski is a masterwork of shoe-leather investigative journalism, drawing on aviation records, social media posts and other “open source” intelligence to expose the illegal, off-the-books “gifts” from a billionaire to an unaccountable Supreme Court justice with a lifetime appointment.
Here are a two of those gifts: a private jet/superyacht jaunt around Indonesia valued at $500,000; and a $500,000 gift to Ginni Thomas’s Tea Party group (which pays Ginni Thomas $120,000/year).
On top of that are gifts that are literally priceless: decades’ worth of summer vacations at Camp Topridge, Crow’s private estate, with its waterfall, great hall, private chefs, 25 fireplaces, thee boathouses, clay tennis court, batting range, 1950s-style soda fountain and full-scale reproduction of Hagrid’s hut.
Summer retreats to Topridge allow business leaders like Leonard Leo — the Federalist Society bankroller and mastermind who set Trump up to pack the Supreme Court — to coordinate in private with Thomas:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/09/29/betcha-cant-eat-just-one/#pwnage
They also allow top execs from PWC, Verizon and other corporations who may have business before the court to establish a warm, collegial relationship with a judge whose decisions can make billions for their employers. In its reporting, Propublica points out that Thomas got to hang out on Crow’s superyacht with Mark Paoletta, who was then general counsel for Trump’s OMB, and who has opposed any tightening of ethics rules for Supreme Court judges: “there is nothing wrong with ethics or recusals at the Supreme Court.”
Crow and Thomas also hobnob together at Crow’s Texas ranch, and at the Bohemian Grove, the Bay Area’s ultra-luxe retreat for rich creeps. Crow bought Thomas a private superyacht cruise through New Zealand, another through the Greek islands, and a river trip around Savannah, GA. He also traveled around the country on Crow’s private jet — even a short private jet trip is valued around $70,000.
Crow also makes many donations on Thomas’s behalf, from a $105,000 donation to Yale Law School for the “Justice Thomas Portrait Fund” to paying for a 7 foot tall, 1,800 lb bronze statue of the nun who taught Thomas in the eighth grade, which now stands in a New York Catholic cemetery.
This is without precedent. No Supreme Court justice in US history received comparable gifts during their tenure on the bench. Federal judges quoted in the story call it “incomprehensible,” noting that US judges bend over backwards not to owe anyone any favors, going so far as to book restaurant reservations without using their titles.
Virginia Canter, a former US government ethics lawyer of bipartisan experience said Thomas “seems to have completely disregarded his higher ethical obligations,” adding “it makes my heart sink.”
The Supreme Court’s own code of ethics prohibits justices from engaging in conduct that gives rise to the “appearance of impropriety,” but the code is “consultative,” and there are no penalties for violating it. But US judicial officers — including Thomas — are legally required to disclose things like private jet trips. Thomas did not. In general, justices must report any gift valued at more than $415, where a gift is “anything of value.” This includes instances in which a gift is given by a corporation whose owner is the true giver.
Crow is a Red Scare-haunted plutocrat who says his greatest fear is “Marxism.” He was a key donor to the anti-tax extremists at the Club For Growth, and has served on the board of the American Enterprise Institute — climate deniers who also claimed that smoking didn’t cause cancer — for 25 years.
Crow is a proud dark-money source, too, whose $10m in acknowledged donations to Republican causes and candidates are only the tip of the iceberg, next to the dark money he has provided to groups he declines to name, telling the New York Times, “I don’t disclose what I’m not required to disclose.”
Crow claims that the vast sums he’s lavished on Thomas — who, again, presides over the test cases that Crow is helping to put before him — are just “hospitality.” Crow called the private retreats with business leaders and top government officials “gatherings of friends,” and added that he was “unaware of any of our friends ever lobbying or seeking to influence Justice Thomas” while at his private estates or on his superyacht or private plane.
For his part, Thomas publicly maintains that he hates luxury. In a Crow-financed documentary about Thomas’s life, Thomas tells the camera, “I prefer the RV parks. I prefer the Walmart parking lots to the beaches and things like that. There’s something normal to me about it. I come from regular stock, and I prefer that — I prefer being around that.”
Judges often have to make determinations about conflicts of interest, and lawyers have an entire practice devoted to preventing conflicts from arising. I doubt whether Thomas himself would consent to have a dispute of his own tried in front of a judge who had received millions in gifts from his opponent.
The Supreme Court’s power comes from its legitimacy. The project of delegitimizing the court started with the right, and Democrats have been loathe to participate in any activity that would worsen the court’s reputation. As a result, the business lobby and authoritarian politicians have had free rein to turn the court into a weapon for attacking American workers, American women, and LGBTQ people.
It doesn’t have to be this way. When the Supreme Court blocked all of FDR’s New Deal policies — which were wildly popular — FDR responded by proposing age limits for Supreme Court judges. When the Supremes refused to contemplate this, FDR asked Congress for a law allowing him to appoint one new Supreme Court judge for every judge who should retire but wouldn’t.
As the vote on this bill grew nearer, the Supremes reversed themselves, voting to uphold the policies they’d struck down in their previous session. They knew that their legitimacy was all they had, and when a brave president stood up to their bullying, they caved.
https://theconversation.com/packing-the-court-amid-national-crises-lincoln-and-his-republicans-remade-the-supreme-court-to-fit-their-agenda-147139
The Supreme Court has moved America further away from the ideals of pluralistic democracy than we can even fathom, and they’re just getting started. They are taking a wrecking ball to the lives of anyone who isn’t a wealthy conservative, and they’re doing it while accepting a fortune in bribes from American oligarchs.
Have you ever wanted to say thank you for these posts? Here’s how you can: I’m kickstarting the audiobook for my next novel, a post-cyberpunk anti-finance finance thriller about Silicon Valley scams called Red Team Blues. Amazon’s Audible refuses to carry my audiobooks because they’re DRM free, but crowdfunding makes them possible.

Headcanon time!
Let me preface this by saying smoking is bad. We all know this. It's not an appealing habit, it smells fairly terrible and has lasting impacts on your health - and I can say this with great authority, having been a smoker myself who was fortunate enough to manage quitting many many years ago.
But! Since Cybird insists on giving us suitors that light up, I'm jumping through some mental hoops to make things more palatable, for myself and maybe others. Which is a long-winded way of saying, Jude smokes clove cigarettes. (And probably smells of clove quite strongly too)
Now hear me out, there are good reasons I propose this! It's not just because it makes things a bit less repugnant, although that's certainly one factor. I'll put behind a cut the entirely neurotic, long-winded explanation behind my thought process.
Time frame: Obviously we know we're in the Victorian era here, which stretches a long long time. 63 years in fact is how long the queen reigned. Maybe there's been other details giving us a more exact time frame but so far I feel safe saying we're not in the early part of her reign - Big Ben clearly exists in this London, which wasn't built until 1859. Referring to postal workers as 'robins' wasn't a thing until the 1860s at least. The first commercial typewriters were available circa 1874 but the QWERTY keyboard layout we see on Kate's typewriter wasn't popularized until the Remington No. 2 was sold in 1878 where it then became the de facto arrangement. THUS, we can safely assume the game takes place squarely in the 1880s, by my reckoning. And when were clove cigarettes invented? 1880.
Clove cigarettes: Clove cigarettes are made of a mixture of tobacco, dried cloves, and sometimes other spices. They have a unique flavor and spicy smell to them that isn't actually unpleasant, but it can be very strong given how the clove overpowers the tobacco scent. (Here in the USA most clove cigarettes have been banned along with other 'flavored' cigarettes for more than a decade now, but I've had my share as a Youth) Per my exhaustive research (AKA googling) the leading theory of the origin of the clove cigarette was that they were invented in 1880 by a man in Indonesia who was - wait for it - seeking something to relieve the symptoms of respiratory ailment. They were first marketed as a medicinal product for chest pain, asthma, sore throats etc, and the eugenol contained in clove oil does function as an anesthetic. After Jude's 'Secrets' story we know for certain that he suffers from some mysterious and serious disease of the lungs, and implies that he smokes for therapeutic reasons.
Availability: Even if clove cigarettes hadn't become enormously popular in the West yet by the game's point and time, I think we can safely make a case that Jude would have access to them given his very position as head of a far-flung trading company. I don't think it's a stretch to imagine that if he'd heard of some medicinal product that alleviates lung issues he wouldn't try to get his hands on it ASAP.
And there we have it, my case for the clove-scented Jude. Go forth and do what ye will with this, fic writers etc...I know I will be until proven otherwise!
...ok who am I kidding, I'll probably stick with it even IF proven otherwise, because the alternative is just blegh.

ZOOL - Shuffle Talk 2022 (Episode 3)
Tumblr media
PART 1 | PART 2 | PART 3
Please note: I am NOT a professional and my level of JP is very, very basic. I do this for practice and to share with other fans for fun. Please take my translations with a grain of salt as there may be mistakes. If you see any, please let me know and I can correct them. If anyone else has this card and wants to translate this at any time then please feel free to do so!
Haruka: Whoa! Look, look! The night illumination started!
Touma: Wow, it’s really magical compared to during the day…! The view from the suspension bridge is remarkable! (1)
Touma: Until the shoot starts back up, we’re free to walk around as we’d like, right?!
Minami: Yes. Utsugi-san will call us when it’s time.
Touma: Is it alright that Haru didn’t take a nap? He looked a little sleepy.
Minami: Yesterday after dinner we swam in the pool at Sentosa Island, and went to the night safari at night, so we stayed up late sight-seeing.
Haruka: I won’t get tired over that much. You’re exaggerating over a yawn.
Haruka: Rather, wouldn’t that be Touma? He’s been half asleep since this morning, not to mention the bedhead. It was like a chicken comb.
Minami: Fufu. He had an impressive antenna on his head. It was cute.
Torao: I took a picture of it too, I’ll put it in the group chat later.
Touma: Haha! You even took a picture! Hasn’t the amount of photos in the group chat’s album increased quite a lot the last 2 days?
Touma: It was really tough to pick out which photo to send to Utsugi-san yesterday.
Minami: Everyone took a lot of pictures. But thanks to that, we were able to get the OK from Utsugi-san who said, “A wonderful, lovely ZOOL!”
Haruka: ….. Just checking, wasn’t our original concept madness and destruction?
Touma: A lovely ZOOL is good. An idol who combines both madness and lovely, could you find it elsewhere?
Minami: Well, I suppose not. And besides, I also think it’s a lovely photo.
Torao: Yeah, I thought you were out of your mind wearing the deformed merlion headgear, but it was lovely.
Minami: Combined with the t-shirts bought from Isumi-san’s suggestion, we had the feel of happy tourists.
Haruka: Something like that shows closeness better. Plus it’ll be a memento. I also like the photo quite a bit.
Touma: I know right! That feeling of being in high spirits is nice!
Torao: That photo is nice, but I like this one. Haruka and Touma having fun on the gondola.
Touma: Woah, when did you take this?!
Haruka: We’re both sticking to the window like children. It’s too embarrassing….
Minami: Fufu. You were both so captivated by the scenery outside.
Haruka: That’s because if the weather is good, you can see as far as Indonesia….
Torao: Haha. It’s a nice photo, huh?
Touma: Then, I won’t lose either. It’s Mina and Tora looking at Merlion plushies. They were choosing so earnestly.
Torao: Oh, at the souvenir shop Minami said that if I put it in my room then it would raise my good fortune, so I wanted to choose a worthy plush.
Haruka: Huh? A plush in Torao’s room…?
Minami: Yes, but it didn’t have to be a plush, anything white would have been fine since Midou-san doesn’t have many belongings. I just thought it would be nice to have one cute item.
Touma: Haha, that’s true! Tora’s room is so clean that I get a little nervous when I go, so maybe this is just what he needs!
Torao: Minami, I thought you were seriously choosing, but that was the reason?
Torao: Well, it’s fine if it’s just one. I’ll leave it there so you guys don’t get nervous.
Minami: Fufu, thank you.
Minami: If it’s a picture taken at a souvenir shop, I recommend the one where Isumi-san is giving it his best effort to pick one, it’s very cute.
Haruka: If you say that, then it’s the one with Minami’s happy face while eating dinner!
Torao: There’s also a photo of Touma having fun on a swimming tube.
Haruka: Ahaha! The one with his duck floatie! It really suited you!
Touma: I-– I just rented the child one by mistake…!!!
          *click*
ZOOL: Huh?!
Shirou Utsugi: Oh, did I surprise you?
Shirou Utsugi: Apologies. Everyone just had such good expressions.
Touma: Ooh, you’re right! It’s a great photo!
Minami: Yes, today the 4 of us might just have the biggest smiles.
Shirou Utsugi: The staff was also very pleased with the photoshoot from earlier. They were able to take good photos since your expressions were soft and relaxed.
Haruka: That’s good, but…. ….. Now that you mention it, what about the first request? About wanting to show how close we are.
Minami: Certainly, the director didn’t say anything of the sort during the shoot earlier.
Torao: Will we shoot those situations after this?
Shirou Utsugi: Regarding today’s rehearsal… I lied.
ZOOL: You lied….?!
Minami: What do you mean?
Shirou Utsugi: Even if it’s for work, since it’s overseas I wanted everyone to enjoy their time off.
Shirou Utsugi: I wanted you to go to various places, take many photos, and leave with many memories.
Shirou Utsugi: If I didn’t say that, everyone wouldn’t have been able to take pictures together since you’re shy. (2)
Torao: It’s because we’re shy that it was a mission for us?
Shirou Utsugi: Correct. However, due to this I did such deceptive behavior. I’m very sorry.
Minami: Oh my. None of us felt deceived.
Haruka: Yeah. It was fun to take pictures, too. Actually, if Utsugi-san hadn’t told us that, then I would’ve just taken some for social media.
Touma: Rather, we’re grateful. Thanks to you, we have a lot of memories!
Torao: Yeah, if there wasn’t a mission, we wouldn’t have been to so many tourist spots.
Shirou Utsugi: I’m glad you think so. Thanks to everyone’s photos, it felt like I was traveling with you.
Touma: Then, let’s take a photo with the 5 of us!
Minami / Haruka /Torao / Shirou Utsugi: Eh?!
Touma: Utsugi-san, you haven’t taken any photos since we came here, right? We took a lot of photos, so you should take at least one too.
Shirou Utsugi: That’s true. If that’s the case, then by all means!
Shirou Utsugi: Do you have a specific pose?
Torao: What’s up? You look rather happy.
Shirou Utsugi: As a fan, a picture with the “Lovely ZOOL, Enjoy ZOOL” at its current peak could make one faint.
Haruka: What are you even saying? You’re also one of us!!
Shirou Utsugi: Hahaha, thank you very much. I’m honored. Inumaru-san, please send me the picture later.
Touma: Of course I will! Then, I’ll hold the camera, so gather up.
Haruka: Utsugi-san, only half of your face will be in the photo. Come a little closer to Touma.
Shirou Utsugi: Like this?
Touma: Oh, looks good!
Torao: So, what about the pose?
Haruka: Huh, isn’t a peace sign normally fine?
Touma: Crap, my arm is shaking. Please decide quickly.
Minami: Then, let’s do a crab pose.
Touma: Alright, let’s take it.
Touma: 3, 2, 1, crabby crab!
Shirou Utsugi: Crabby crab!
          *click*
Torao: (He went along with it….)
Minami: (Didn’t he go along with it too well….?)
Haruka: (Maybe I just don’t know, but is it actually normal to call out “crabby crab”?!)
Touma: ….Haha! Utsugi-san, your crab pose is perfect!
Shirou Utsugi: Everyone’s pictures made me happy, so I wanted to try it too. The crab pose.
Torao: Aren’t you also in high spirits…. Well, as long as you’re happy.
Shirou Utsugi: I am, thank you very much.
Shirou Utsugi: ….. Oh! Since the staff is calling, I’ll be going for a bit. I’ll give a call for you again when shooting starts back up.
ZOOL: Right.
Haruka: So, the picture? Did it have any blur?
Touma: It’s not blurry, but….
Torao: Everyone has complicated expressions.
Minami: We’re smiling, but…. It looks like the first promotional photo I took.
Touma: It’s true that we all look stiff….
Haruka: Isn’t it because we got distracted by the crab just before it?
Touma: Ahaha, there was a bit of that.
Haruka: But, we don’t often take pictures with Utsugi-san, so I might have been a bit nervous….
Minami: This is good, right? I like this photo, you know.
Minami: As Utsugi-san said, it’s a photo together that will remain a good memory.
Torao: Yeah, and this is just how it is now. We never thought in the past that we’d be such close friends.
Haruka: Mhm. If you told our past selves, they’d be surprised.
Touma: If it was like how it was back then, we might have acted separately this time too.
Minami: I agree. I don’t think I would’ve gone to the trouble of going to Sentosa Island or a night safari.
Haruka: ….I’m glad we went. I had a lot of fun…. because I got to go with everyone.
Minami: Me too. I’m happy we all went.
Touma: Ahaha, me too! I’d like to go on another trip with all of you, either in Japan or overseas.
Torao: It’s not bad to spend a trip with only men every now and then.
Haruka: It’s fine! If we get a mission like this again then we got this!
Shirou Utsugi: The friendly ZOOOOL~~! (3) The photoshoot will resuuume~!
ZOOL: Wha–?!
Minami: What is that person saying out loud…
Haruka: W-what an embarrassing guy…! It’ll be hard to go back!
Torao: I can imagine the warm looks from the staff…
Touma: Haha! A friendly ZOOL is nice!
Touma: Right now, at this moment, this is the best ZOOL. Throughout Japan… no, throughout the whole world. Let’s show it to them!
Minami / Haruka / Torao: Yeah!
[End of Rabbitv]
TL Notes:
1.  The word Touma uses here that I translated as “remarkable” is more like having an intense impact.
2. Sorry, I’m not 100% sure on this one ><
>> ああでも言わないと、 揃って写真を撮ることもないでしょう みなさん、 奥手ですし。
3. The word Shirou uses here is 仲良し which pops up a lot in this rabbittv and I normally translated it as “close” or similarly, but it’s like saying “ZOOL who are good friends”

Barong - Day 25
Race: Avatar
Alignment: Light-Neutral
April 24th, 2024
Tumblr media
I'd like to start this daily demon spotlight with an admittance of bias. Barong is my favorite demon in the series, bar none. In celebration of making it to 25 (!!) days of this series, I've decided to let the holy cat out of the bag. Barong is the demon that introduced me to Balinese mythology, has saved my hide several times throughout the series, and has an adorable and unique design to boot. He stands right next to, if not above Black Frost and Chernobog in my book. Past that, though, I would also like to say- thank you all for sticking with me for 25 days! It's been so damn fun, and I plan on continuing this series for months, if not years to come. I know it's a little early for the ivories, but the small community that has been built up over time has given me so much life and energy!
With that sappy stuff out of the way...
Today's demon of the day lies in the form of the great panther, protector of mankind, and host of all things good, Barong. Bali mythology is surprisingly easy to look through, having solid roots and foundations, as well as its origin being in a somewhat small subset of Indonesia, though this isn't to say it's not complex. Balinese mythology takes a unique form, one similar to the worship of Ame-no-Uzume, wherein several of its stories aren't plays nor grand tales, but rather, fascinatingly hypnotic dances. Barong's appearance in these dances is that of a glamorously decorated (and very ambiguous) animal that I would personally say looks somewhat, vaguely similar to a lion?
Tumblr media
However, the type of animal it is isn't that important, and admittedly just makes me confused. What is important is Barong's role in Balinese mythology, that being of a protector of humanity itself- in the mythos surrounding Barong and its eternal rival Rangda, Barong represents good health, good fortune, and has reign over all the spirits that inhabit the small province. The most prominent myth featuring the great avatar is recanted in the famous Kris dance, a dance representing Barong battling with Rangda. During the hypnotic trawl, dancers bring swords dangerously close to hurting themselves, though they emerge unscathed, watched over by two dancers in an ornate harness holding up the avatar of Barong who dances furiously behind them.
The dance begins with two monkeys and Barong engaging in dance, though quickly escalates as witches sent by Rangda attack the frolicking group. The dance-drama escalates from there as Barong tries to reign back control over the kingdom, which had found itself under siege by Rangda, eventually leading to the most iconic scene of the play, wherein two palace guards stab themselves with kali daggers in a desperate trance under Rangda's control- though they emerge unscathed as Barong comes to the rescue and engages in battle with the witch, protecting the guards with his holy magic. After a long and fraught dance between Barong and its rival, eventually, the holy avatar emerges victorious, and the kingdom is returned to peace and prosperity.
Barong is not just an artefact of the dance, though- he's an important figure in Balinese tradition, one held in reverence and good spirits, and the dance is simply held to represent the eternal struggle between good and evil, as well as celebrate the triumph of the love and goodness that Barong represents. People equipped in Barong costumes even, on occasion, parade around Balinese towns in order to ward off evil spirits and bad luck. Barong is locked in a never-ending battle against Rangda and the forces of darkness, yet never gives up hope; As a Bali volunteer in the Bali Volunteer Program puts it, "Once the trance is over, Barong and his supporters finally overthrow Rangda. But she does not die. Instead, she reincarnates and Barong must defeat her again. The fight never stops. It is symbolic of light’s eternal strife against darkness."
In the SMT series, Barong is depicted faithfully, though far more blue than red. Decorated in jewels and studded in silver, the Balinese lion dances in combat, easily connecting to the dance-dramas the beast is so frequently depicted in. Interestingly, a common series staple is that of Rangda and Barong's fusion leading to Shiva, and while unconfirmed, I have an idea as to why this may be the case. While Barong and Rangda are from completely different mythologies, they both represent opposing forces of light and dark, something that Shiva, a god of destruction who is not evil, is an inherent blend of- Shiva is both light and dark, good and evil, while Barong is good, light, and Rangda is evil, dark.
All in all, Balinese myth's hypnotic dances and beautiful performances lend to an amazingly designed demon that truly fulfills all it sets out to do, represents an underrepresented mythology, and stands out as my personal favorite demon in the series. Next to Chernobog and Black Frost, of course. And also Parvati. And Mother Harlot. Am I just edgy?

A Filipino-American artist Pacita Abad (1946-2004) was born in Batanes, Philippines, and lived in Philippines until her parents urged her to leave Manila in 1970. As a law student, Abad had begun to organize demonstrations opposing the dictatorial regime of Ferdinand Marcos. Her organizing activities led her and her family in Manila to become targets of political violence. Abad took her parents’ advice and left Philippines. She enrolled at the University of San Francisco to study Asian history while supporting herself as a seamstress and a typist.
Abad became interested in art and eventually became a global artist. She has lived in many countries, including Bangladesh, Yemen, Sudan, Papua New Guinea, and Indonesia, incorporating many different techniques and styles she encountered in her travels into her artwork. Abad would sew, stitch, and collage objects such as stones, sequins, glass, buttons, shells, and mirrors onto painted canvas to create vibrantly colorful works.
Tumblr media
Fortunate for those who can visit Harvard, Abad’s work is now being shown as a part of “Future Minded: New Works in the Collection” at the Harvard Art Museums, which is free to the public.

Beach Love: "Glasses and Missy" at Komodo Island
Tumblr media
(FCs:
Sloane Washington: Nelly Muse
Alana Kusuma: Marion Jola)
So I've always had it in my mind that in both my poly!MCs-verses esp, Sloane and Alana begin to date at some point. I really liked the vibes I got from them in canon, so it's always been on my mind to pair them up. I feel like Sloane would get together with Khaan and Alana at least in every universe of mine, but at different times and with a different set of circumstances (in two of those universes Alana is involved with my polyam!MCs - Basil and Hawthorne - as well)
I envision that for their fifth year as a couple, Alana takes Sloane to Indonesia for a holiday. It's actually part of a group trip, but Alana wanted to treat her to something special and brought her there early.
Alana's not very keen on stuff that seems to indicate commitment tbh, so her doing this for Sloane is a pretty big deal. A few small hcs I have about this holiday:
• They binge out on bakso (meatballs!) and grilled corn
• Both love collecting seashells. Alana likes the worm snail and conch type, Sloane loves the scallop style and horse conch. Also colourful helmet shells.
• Sloane has gone snorkeling with the MC before (Basil gets her a pearl, Hawthorne gets her a seashell), but this time Alana and Sloane go river rafting. It's terrifying and exhilarating at the same time - but Sloane can always trust Alana to get her to push herself without feeling unsafe.
• They love watching the sunset together.
• Sloane has phases where she loves the beach, and where she isn't at all into it (sensory issues), but this holiday fortunately happens at a point when she's absolutely down for it.
• Sloane develops a taste for Arak Bali during her stay. She takes a bottle home.
• Did they do any skinny dipping? Yes they did, though Sloane did think a thousand times before taking that plunge. Nadia was so proud 😄
Tagging @sloanewashingtonappreciationweek and @sazanes for SWAW Day 4: Happy Valentine's Day!
Tagging @choicespride for the Valentine's Day event:
Book: Perfect Match
Pairing: Sloane Washington (bi) x Alana Kusuma (pan)

Remembering March 11, 2011
On March 11, 2011, a magnitude (Mw) 9.1 earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Honshu on the Japan Trench. A tsunami that was generated by the earthquake arrived at the coast within 30 minutes, overtopping seawalls and disabling three nuclear reactors within days. The 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami event, often referred to as the Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami, resulted in over 18,000 dead, including several thousand victims who were never recovered.
The deadly earthquake was the largest magnitude ever recorded in Japan and the third-largest in the world since 1900.
How It Happened
The 2011 event resulted from thrust faulting on the subduction zone plate boundary between the Pacific and North America plates, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
This region has a high rate of seismic activity, with the potential to generate tsunamis. Past earthquakes that generated tsunamis in the region have included the deadly events of 1611, 1896, and 1933.
The March 11, 2011 earthquake generated a tsunami with a maximum wave height of almost 40 meters (130 feet) in the Iwate Prefecture. Researchers also determined that a 2,000-kilometer (1,242-mile) stretch of Japan’s Pacific coast was impacted by the tsunami.
Following the earthquake, a tsunami disabled the power supply and cooling of three Fukushima Daiichi reactors, causing a significant nuclear accident. All three nuclear cores largely melted in the first three days.
As of December 2020, the Japan National Police Agency reported 15,899 deaths, 2,527 missing and presumed deaths, and 6,157 injuries for the Great East Japan event.
High Costs
In Japan, the event resulted in the total destruction of more than 123,000 houses and damage to almost a million more. Ninety-eight percent of the damage was attributed to the tsunami. The costs resulting from the earthquake and tsunami in Japan alone were estimated at $220 billion USD. The damage makes the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami the most expensive natural disaster in history.
Although the majority of the tsunami’s impact was in Japan, the event was truly global. The tsunami was observed at coastal sea level gauges in over 25 Pacific Rim countries, in Antarctica, and on the west coast of the Atlantic Ocean in Brazil.
The tsunami caused $31 million USD damage in Hawaii and $100 million USD in damages and recovery to marine facilities in California. Additionally, damage was reported in French Polynesia, Galapagos Islands, Peru, and Chile.
Fortunately, the loss of life outside of Japan was minimal (one death in Indonesia and one death in California) due to the Pacific Tsunami Warning System and its connections to national-level warning and evacuation systems.

Hey, if you're still doing the ask game: Rantaro
Hey!! I'm always down to talk about DR chars, I'll do it as long as people ask. This one's gonna be the most challenging one of all because even after playing V3, I feel like I don't know Rantaro at all. (I have not watched any of his scenes in DRS or UTDP either.) These answers will probably be shorter than for other characters I've covered in this ask game. Let's see ...
Sexuality headcanon: He seems like the type who never turns down a chance to try something new. Doesn't mean he likes all of it, though. If asked he keeps mum, merely saying he's been around the block ... though he'll casually slip a mention of doing some exotic sex act during a lull in conversation.
Gender headcanon: Gender is a game, and Rantaro is eating the other players' pieces when they're not looking. Gender is a game, and Rantaro is achieving scorigami. Gender is a game, and Rantaro is playing Calvinball.
A ship I have with said character: I've seen some art with him and Korekiyo, an intriguing pair. Both seem deeply interested in human behavior across cultures. Both revel in being mysterious and teasing out mysteries. Both can be quite intimidating, yet generous in the right mood. There's something here.
A BroTP I have with said character: Here's an idea: Rantaro adores Nagito. They've crossed paths in several different places around the world, and every time it's chaotic. One encounter sees them making off with a fortune in Monaco and immediately squandering it, another sees them sharing a shelter in Indonesia during a typhoon that's way worse than forecasted. It's always unpredictable, which an adventurer like Rantaro craves. In the back of his mind, he's always hoping to bump into that strange boy again.
A NoTP I have with said character: Hard to say. He's a real charmer.
Random headcanon: Rantaro loves to suggest that he's not good at something, get a bet going with someone else, then absolutely nail it. No one else loves it.
General opinion: Rantaro was always the slipperiest character for me. For a long time, I just couldn't figure him out. Maybe my answers show that I still can't, but I think I understand him a little better now. He's adventurous, kind, a little shady, enigmatic. He does seem like a cool dude.

Okay we know you love Ghost but can you see ghosts? 👀
WELL. I can't see ghosts, but I can feel and hear them, if that makes sense. But I'm not afraid nor scared of them, like they just be doing their stuff it's their business, I just don't bother them LMAO.
Here's a list of ghost stories that I've encountered in my life (LET'S GO SPOOKY STORY TIME) :
(disclaimer I swear I'm not lying on any of this. Me and my fam are quite religious yes, and Indonesia is also known for the ghosts and myths, so buckle up)
I can feel a lot of ghosts in different churches. One time I saw one is at night I saw a white figure on top of the church roof. Everything else was dark, but that figure was shining bright. Super bright. Usually ghosts are pitch black figure/shadow figure, but this one is shining bright. Probably an angel idk.
I know there's a spirit that resides in my house (my house is in front of a cemetery). My dog likes to bark at a tree and that's like the telltale. One of the housekeeper that used to work for my mum (that can see ghost) said that the ghost is a kid and not harmful.
I sleep in the second floor, but the first floor is open to see from me and my sister's room. One night around 2-3 AM, me and my sis got woken up by the sound of a crowd. Yeah. A crowd, like in a party from the first floor. Sounds of people conversing and stuff but fr there's literally no one. My mum said the spirits are gathering and just having a party downstairs lol.
In me and my sis' room (the lights were turned off), I saw a 'grey' woman dressed in a mukena (Muslim women's praying garment. Usually white in color) doing her prayer literally ON our bed. I couldn't see the face, but she had glowing eyes. We still sleep on that exact bed to this day HAH (Girl that's MY bed. Go get a sajjada or smth).
We have hollow metal fences, so if you hit it, it would sound like a baseball bat, if you get what I'm saying. Some nights at 2 AM I would hear someone hitting our metal fence super hard that I can't sleep. Me and my dad are very sensitive to sounds. Any sound at all and we BOTH would wake up. But my dad apparently CANNOT hear this person hitting the fence and didn't wake up. So I assume I might be the only one to hear it. Probably the kid ghost that I mentioned above.
This is quite scary, and I sincerely am afraid of and HATE this trait of mine. Whenever I can't sleep until 3 AM, (I easily fall asleep. I'm very tired during the day, and I always sleep easy. I don't have insomnia), whenever that happens, someone I know/in my family dies. The most recent ones are on January 4th 2022 (My uncle) and on November 22nd 2022 (my grandmother). I fucking hate this trait cuz I fear it could be my parents or siblings. But yea, gotta live with that.
There're many more ghost stories in museums, churches, and stuff. Fortunately in my hostel there's no activity at all so I can relax and shit.

Another day and another realm to be exercised  ..  listen adjust comprehend and execute ..
12:19 AM
But the tragedy of life and the writing of this Blog is the slumber that much like a Beethoven Symphony drives with the intersperse of the soft fluted melody with the harsh heavy instrumental strain of music - almost like the gentle atoms of life which interpret as desire .. and the larger sound of the base and the harsh symbols clashing along with a multitudinous 100 piece orchestra that takes over and drowns the fluted melody - DESTINY ..
Your fluted life , with its softness of all that is desirable is eventually governed and mastered by the heavy thrust of destiny, that converges as an impregnable cage , not permitting or allowing desire to escape and be free ..
The eventual story of all life .. dictated by the sound of music .. the strings the instruments that when plucked , leave a plucked rose just by the stem, as the petals lie strewn on the ground .. to dry to perish, never to be born again - until another plant grows form the earth of life ..
a bit poetic in the early hors of the morning that pulls you ot of the slumber at 5  am and warns you much like those harsh orchestral bearings that many a routine needs attention - the Blog, the connect , to the waiting and exasperated, ever vigilant Ef ..
It is not a compulsion .. it is the destiny of orchestral potent intent that drives the desire to wake up and perform ..
This morning .. no not this one , the one before was a satisfactory outburst of what had collectively been accumulated within and did not get the freedom of escaping the DESTINY caged room, filled with saturated exuberant content .. not one that had  been its ‘impotency’ .. but one that had remained potent enough for a cell to cohabitate with the egg of procreation ..
the pregnancy was potent enough and the receptacle of birth occurred ... the ‘impotency of content’  gathered storm and was sufficient to break the barriers of resentful disconnect .. eventually converging on an emotional breakdown of realisation .. a realisation that who they were dealing with was not a ‘who’ but one that had deeper intent ; unfortunately of no lasting value , for the ‘pre’ had been preoccupied by the ‘others’ ..
the ➡️ moveth and the real of the reality takes precedence ..
work ..

and the wave of fortune expectations ..

to the gestures of the client that sits before thee .. in his brilliance ..

to them that make me in larger size and form .. they that make the divine God Lord Ganesh at the LalBaugh cha Raja Ganpati during the festival ..
Tumblr media
and onto the spirit of drive .. in the strength of mobility that despite the lethargic limited consumption of food , must be given attitude of normalcy .. for the show goes on ..
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
drive .. the strength of hidden power .. of the energy which unless provoked never ever emerges .. and when it does .. it breaks that caged humēn .. boundless unbridled ‘want’ .. to give all that was never conceived before ..
ending eventually with the satisfaction of interaction with them that sit for hours for our creative hours to be complete .. to meet to look to speak to discuss to confess and to .. GIVE ..
Tumblr media
the hand work of exceptional quality .. hand paintings .. that look beyond real .. that look like camera work but indeed are painted ..

... and the pride of regal wearings ..

And the DAY endeth .. for there is other responses to give to them that give so much for so little ..

NCT 127’s Jakarta Concert Ends Early After 30 Fans Faint + Event Organizer Apologizes
NCT 127’s concert in Indonesia faced more than one safety threat last night.
On November 4, NCT 127 held the first night of their “Neo City : The Link” concert in Jakarta at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition.
Things got off to a rocky start when a bomb threat was made ahead of the concert, but fortunately, the police found no evidence of any bombs or explosives after thoroughly searching the venue.
However, the night’s troubles didn’t end there. Initially, the concert proceeded without any issues, but towards the end of the night, the crowd in the standing section began to push forward towards the stage.
After noticing the dangerous situation developing in the standing section, the NCT 127 members repeatedly urged concertgoers not to push and to step back. The group even stopped performing and cut off the music in an attempt to get through to the crowd, with Doyoung saying, “Safety is what’s most important. Let’s make a promise not to push.”
Unfortunately, despite the group’s best efforts, they were unable to get the crowd under control, and they ultimately left the stage and ended the concert early due to concerns about the attendees’ safety. According to local police, at least 30 members of the crowd fainted and were subsequently taken to the hospital.
Later that night, Dyandra Global Edutainment—the organizer of NCT 127’s Jakarta concert—released a formal statement regarding the incident.
Their full English statement is as follows:
