Sona - First Five 2001 House / Progressive House

Well I'm back on my grind in these early 2000s Montréal club music mines and I managed to uncover this nifty, little anonymous mix that celebrates the five-year anniversary of a popular venue called Sona.

Here's some glowing liner notes about both the club and this particular mix's purpose:

Sona opened in February of 1996 as the first legal bar / after-hours club in Montreal. Its purpose has always been to offer the very best in music emerging from an ever-evolving club scene. Sona has managed to cruise through the fad phase, relentlessly striving to live up to its hard-earned legendary landmark status. It would be impossible to try and pinpoint a specific perfect Sona moment, for everyone seems to have his or her own favourite. We wouldn't dare claim that any compilation CD could ever achieve such a task. We just thought these few anthem tracks would bring back sweet memories to anyone who has been a part of this amazing ongoing party. If you were among us anytime during this crazy ride, you know it's true : the sun always shines at Sona. Here's to five more sunny years !

So, this CD's got some real house bangers from the late 90s and early 2000s, folks. It takes some time to get going, but it really starts finding its groove after the first third. French-sounding funky stuff from a duo called the Skeudymen that consisted of the prolific Frédéric De Backer; back-to-back cuts from Edinburgh's George Thomson, performing as both The Plastic Avengers and The Shutter Bug, with something sci-fi and futuristic and then something self-descriptively perfect called "Real Deal Party Feel;" and then a lovely trio at the end, with Chicago's DJ Sneak doing probably my favorite type of house music there is—that stringy and filtered disco-type shit—France's Didier Sinclair laying a passionate vocal sample over stabbing flute synths and a Euro-beachy bassline, and François Kevorkian going buckwild jazzy on his synthesizer to end the whole shebang.

Surprised there's no mention of who actually made this mix anywhere in this release's liner notes, but whoever it was ended up doing a pretty bang-up job of it; the transitions are solid and the selection's dope. Seems like they definitely did right by Sona here.

HOTEL DU GLOBE Revisits Their Post-punk Roots with new single ‘Back to the Past’

We originally wrote this song in 1987. At that time we were inspired by "Severina" by The Mission. In 2021, the song resurfaced at a party with friends. Our new guitarist, Jo, noticed and liked it. Flattered, we decided to record it with Louise's smooth voice on vocals.

Hotel du Globe is a Belgian rock band, formed in the early 80s by singer Pierre Melchior and bassist Frédéric Floss. The third member was Dimitri Koutcheriw on drums and keyboards. Later, guitarist Philippe Verstraeten and drummer Eric Bayens were recruited.

"We were largely influenced by the bands that emerged after the punk movement. Among others Joy Divison, Human League, The Cure, B-Movie, Simple Minds, etc... "

We composed several "New Wave" songs with metaphysical lyrics, corresponding to our "No Future" generation.

Due to a lack of artistic perspective and despite good feedback on the music and the concerts, the band decided to take a break after their last concert in 1987. This should have been the end ...

The covid-19 pandemic led us to an existential impasse but we were able to exploit the confinement. Our ideas and thoughts were able to escape from this virtual prison... "We caught a window to the sky"... Watching new TV series with 80's music in the background was a trigger!

More than three decades later, the idea of relaunching the band was born in our minds. We decided to record and revisit our most popular song, called "Eyes of the shadow", an energetic and melodic post-punk rock song.

This song has already caught the attention of the Bath-based British label Glasstone Records. They signed us for the distribution and mastering of this track which officially became our first single.

In the meantime, we also recorded "Posthumous Decoration". Both of these songs were written in 1981.

For these recording sessions, we were pleased to welcome the talented musician Geoffrey Lesire who added guitars and backing vocals. Marc De Meersman - who has been with the band since 1985 - on drums. He has played with several bands such as "Vaya Con Dios", Isabelle Antena, The Domino's.

And on top of it all, the young and charismatic Louise joined us and put her sweet and warm voice on our second single "Back to the Past". A melancholic ballad written in 1987.

To complete the project Didier, a close friend, and also a talented and creative keyboard player joined us as well.

We are currently finishing the recording of our first 5 songs EP "INTROSPECTION". The common thread is melancholy. It will be available in spring 2023 and will be mastered by Greg Brookers Glasstone Records. And finally ... We are working on new material. We look forward to share them with you.

HOMMAGE À CHRISTIAN ESCOUDÉ 1947-2024

Né le 23 septembre 1947 à Angoulême, en France, Christian Escoudé était d’origine tsigane par son père. La famille Escoudé, qui était d’origine espagnole, s’était installée en Charente lorsque les troupes nazies avaient envahi la France en juin 1940. La mère de Christian était d’origine charentaise.

Également guitariste, le père de Christian avait été très influencé par Django Reinhardt. Christian avait commencé à apprendre la guitare avec son père et son oncle à l’âge de dix ans. Après avoir joué dans différents bals de la région, Christian a été engagé en 1969, à l’âge de vingt et un ans, par l’orchestre d’Aimé Barelli à Monte-Carlo, dont il fera partie jusqu’en 1971.

DÉBUTS DE CARRIÈRE

Au début des années 1970, Escoudé s’installe à Paris et travaille comme musicien de studio avec des vedettes de la musique pop comme Jean Ferrat, Michel Fugain et Nicole Croisille.

Escoudé a amorcé sa carrière professionnelle en 1972 en se produisant avec le trio du batteur Aldo Romano, qui comprenait également Eddy Louis à l’orgue et Bernard Lubat à la batterie. Plus tard, Escoudé s’était joint au Swing String System de Didier Levallet et au Michel Portal Unit. Après avoir remporté le Prix Django Reinhardt décerné par l'Académie du Jazz en décembre 1975 (il est un des seuls guitaristes de jazz à avoir remporté cet honneur), Escoudé avait formé un quartet avec le pianiste Michel Graillier, le batteur Aldo Romano et le contrebassiste Alby Cullaz (qui fut bientôt remplacé par Jean-François Jenny-Clark). Escoudé avait travaillé par la suite avec Michel Portal, Slide Hampton, Martial Solal et Jean-Claude Fohrenbach.

En 1978, Escoudé s’était produit au Festival de jazz de Nice aux côtés de John Lewis, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Freddie Hubbard, Philly Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, Lee Konitz et Shelly Manne. La même année, Escoudé avait joué pour la première fois au Festival de Samois dans le cadre d’un hommage à son idole Django Reinhardt. Il a aussi enregistré avec le contrebassiste Charlie Haden. L’année suivante, Escoudé s’était produit au Festival de Dakar avec un trio composé du pianiste René Urtreger, du contrebassiste Pierre Michelot et du batteur et compositeur d’origine suisse Daniel Humair.

À l’été 1980, Escoudé avait obtenu une des grandes chances de sa carrière lorsqu’il avait été invité à jouer en duo avec le guitariste de fusion John McLaughlin, avec qui il avait fait une tournée aux États-Unis, au Brésil et au Japon. L’année suivante, Escoudé s’était joint au big band de Martial Solal. Après avoir joué aux États-Unis avec le quartet du batteur Shelly Manne en 1982, Escoudé a formé son propre quartet avec  Olivier Hutman aux claviers, Nicolas Fitzman à la contrebasse et Jean My Truong aux percussions. Ces deux derniers avaient été remplacés par la suite par Jean-Marc Jafet et Tony Rabeson.

En 1983, Escoudé forme un duo avec le violoniste Didier Lockwood. Le groupe s’était par la suite transformé en trio après l’ajout du guitariste belge Philip Catherine. Après avoir formé un trio avec le violoncelliste Jean-Charles Capon et le contrebassiste Ron Carter en 1985, Escoudé avait formé le Trio Gitan avec Boulou Ferré (le fils de Matelo Ferret) et Babik Reinhardt, le fils de Django. En 1987, il se produit en duo avec le pianiste Michel Graillier.

En 1988, Escoudé s’était joint à un quartet composé de Jean-Michel Pilc, François Moutin et Louis Moutin. L’année suivante, Escoudé avait fondé un octet avec les guitaristes Paul Challain Ferret, Jimmy Gourley et Frédéric Sylvestre, l’accordéoniste Marcel Azzola, le violoncelliste Vincent Courtois, le contrebassiste Alby Cullaz et le batteur Billy Hart.

DERNIÈRES ANNÉES

En 1990, Escoudé s’était produit au légendaire Village Vanguard de New York avec le pianiste Hank Jones, le contrebassiste Pierre Michelot et le batteur Kenny Washington. L’année suivante, Escoudé avait enregistré un album entièrement consacré à des compositions de Django Reinhardt. L’album avait été enregistré avec avec un orchestre à cordes. En 1993, Escoudé enregistre à Los Angeles avec Lou Levy, Bob Magnusson et Billy Higgins.

En 1998, Escoudé avait enchaîné avec ‘’A Suite for Gypsies’’, un album de jazz-fusion destiné à honorer les enfants gitans morts dans les camps de concentration nazis. Deux ans plus tard, Escoudé remporte le Grand Prix de la SACEM.

À l’occasion du 50e anniversaire de la mort de Django en 2003, Escoudé avait formé un big band de dix-sept musiciens dans lequel il explorait l’héritage musical de Reinhardt tout en y incorporant ses  propres idées harmoniques et rythmiques. L’année suivante, Escoudé avait créé le  New Gypsy Trio avec David Reinhardt (un autre parent de Django) et Martin Taylor (aussi connu sous le nom de Jean-Baptiste Laya). Après avoir publié l’album Ma Ya en 2005, Escoudé avait formé le Progressive Sextet avec Marcel Azzola, Jean-Baptiste Laya, Sylvain Guillaume, Jean-Marc Jafet et Yoann Serra.

En 2012, Escoudé avait rendu hommage à l’auteur-compositeur Georges Brassens dans le cadre de l’album ‘’Christian Escoudé joue Brassens: Au bois de mon cœur.’’ Participaient également à l’album le contrebassiste Pierre Boussaguet et la batteuse Anne Paceo, ainsi que des artistes invités comprenant la violoniste Fiona Monbet, le clarinettiste  Andre Villeger, le guitariste Biréli Lagrène et le guitariste manouche de onze ans Swan Berger.

En 2019, Escoudé avait surpris tout le monde en lançant à l’abbaye de Saint-Amant-de-Boixe un second album en hommage à son idole Django Reinhardt.

Christian Escoudé est mort d’un cancer le matin du 13 mai 2024 à Saint-Amant-de-Boixe (Charente), près d’Angoulême, à l’âge de soixante-seize ans. La mort d’Escoudé avait été annoncée par Max Robin, le directeur artistique de la compagnie Label Ouest qui avait publié son dernier album intitulé ‘’Ancrage.’’ Décrivant Escoudé comme un grand musicien, compositeur et improvisateur, Robin avait souligné son engagement dans la musique.

Escoudé avait été victime d’un cancer particulièrement foudroyant. Jean Ledroit, un ami et voisin d’Escoudé à Saint-Amant-de-Boix ‘’On devait jouer avec lui il y a trois semaines à Mansle mais il était déjà malade. C’est brutal {...}. On a perdu un monstre sacré du jazz, le digne successeur de Django Reinhardt ’’.

François Ducharme, l’ancien président de l'Académie du jazz et un des programmateurs de l'émission de radio "Club Jazzafip", avait ajouté: "Un musicien intuitif avec cette poésie au bout des doigts. Un enfant de la balle, comme on dit, à qui on a mis une guitare dans les mains et qui en a fait son métier très jeune, jouant dans les bals, localement, avant de monter à Paris".

Caractérisé par un style très mélodique et très chaud, Escoudé avait participé à l’enregistrement de plus de 50 albums au cours de sa carrière. Le style d’Escoudé était un mélange de bebop et de musique gypsy. Passionné par le jazz, Escoudé s’intéressait également à la musique de chambre. Comme compositeur, Escoudé avait été très influencé par Gil Evans, Claus Ogerman et Antonio Carlos Jobim. En 2022, Escoudé avait vu sa carrière être couronnée par la remise d’un prix Victoire d'honneur du Jazz.

Reconnu pour sa modestie et son sens de l’humour, Escoudé ne s’était jamais enflé la tête avec ses réalisations. Françoise Giroux-Mallot, la mairesse de Saint-Amant-de-Boixe, avait commenté: ‘’C’était quelqu’un d’accessible, modeste et bienveillant.’’ Au cours d’une de ses dernières entrevues, Escoudé était d’ailleurs demeuré très terre-à-terre. Il avait précisé: ‘’On les perd forcément {nos illusions} à un moment mais je pense avoir respecté mon intégrité. Je n’ai jamais été très loin dans les excès, ce n’est pas dans ma nature.’’

Synopsis : Lagardère a été élevé par Cocardasse et Passepoil, deux maîtres d’armes qui lui ont appris à manier l’épée. Lagardère a beaucoup d’admiration pour le duc de Nevers dont il veut percer le secret de la célèbre botte. Sa provocation et son assurance finissent par convaincre Nevers qui l’engage à son service. Nevers est amoureux de la belle Inès, mais Caylus, le père de celle-ci, à l’intention de la marier au prince de Gonzague, cousin de Nevers. Nevers et Inès se marient en secret et de leur union nait une petite Aurore. Mais lorsque Gonzague apprend la nouvelle, il fait assassiner le duc. Mais avant de mourir, Neverss confie le secret de sa botte à Lagardère, ainsi sur sa fille.

Plaisir de Visionnage : Un téléfilm en deux parties assez sympathique, malgré quelques travers. Des duels plutôt bien foutus.

Il évite plus ou moins le sujet tendu de la relation Lagardère/Aurore, mais une femme est toujours la récompense à la fin.

  "En 2022, 56 % de la population mondiale, soit environ 4,4 milliards d’habitants, vivaient en milieu urbain. Cette tendance, si elle se maintenait, ferait que d’ici 2050, 7 personnes sur 10 seront citadines.

  Cette concentration humaine est source de richesse économique et culturelle, mais induit évidemment des risques, des fragilités, des inégalités parfois extrêmes. Elle est aussi génératrice d’effets environnementaux indésirables. La Banque mondiale estime que les villes représentent actuellement près des 2/3 de la consommation mondiale d’énergie et 70 % des émissions planétaires de gaz à effet de serre. Responsable certes, mais aussi victime de l’accélération des changements environnementaux, en particulier climatiques, caractéristiques de l’anthropocène.

  Ainsi s’impose la nécessité d’adapter les grands ensembles urbains à ces défis environnementaux. Certaines métropoles sont menacées par la montée des eaux océaniques. D’autres – parfois les mêmes – sont menacées par les accidents climatiques extrêmes, précipitations massives génératrices d’inondations brutales, canicules, voire simplement augmentation soutenue des températures moyennes impactant violemment populations et infrastructures urbaines. À ces défis vient s’ajouter la gestion du risque sanitaire : qualité et disponibilité de l’eau, risque épidémique, maladies liées à la pollution. L’« exposome urbain » reste à appréhender dans sa globalité, sans parler des altérations de la biodiversité microbienne, animale et végétale."

La bomba al Wow di Milano

Fino al 28 gennaio 2024 al Wow di Milano con la mostra La bomba il protagonista è il fascino dell’apocalisse nucleare, tra fumetto, illustrazione e cartoons. Fin dal 1945, la bomba atomica è entrata nell’immaginario, infatti tantissime opere, dal fumetto al cinema, hanno raccontato cosa succederebbe in un conflitto nucleare, oltre a un futuro in cui l’energia atomica avrebbe potuto migliorare la vita di tutti o hanno rivelato i retroscena di alcuni episodi fondamentali della storia del secolo scorso. Il percorso espositivo è scandito da pannelli di approfondimento sulle tappe storiche fondamentali dell’energia nucleare e della bomba atomica, seguite da approfondimenti tra  tavole originali, pagine a fumetti, manifesti cinematografici, riviste, giornali e oggettistica. L’atomo e l’energia nucleare sono al centro di due importanti storie a fumetti statunitensi, Nel mondo degli atomi con Brick Bradford, in cui l’eroe e i suoi amici vengono miniaturizzati per un viaggio all’interno della struttura della materia, e Il mistero dell’Uomo Nuvola, un’avventura di Topolino dove uno scienziato in grado di imbrigliare la potenza dell’atomo decide di distaccarsi dal resto dell’umanità, spaventato dagli utilizzi della sua scoperta. Il contributo italiano alle scoperte fondamentali della fisica nucleare viene raccontato nel film I ragazzi di via Panisperna (1988), alla mostra con il manifesto cinematografico, che prende il nome dalla via in cui si trovava l’Istituto di Fisica a Roma, coordinato da Enrico Fermi e di cui faceva parte anche  Ettore Majorana, che scompare misteriosamente nel 1938, la cui vita è raccontata nel volume a fumetti Il segreto di Majorana di Francesca Riccioni e Silvia Rocchi, in mostra con alcune tavole. Il Progetto Manhattan è narrato con grande attenzione ai dettagli nel volume a fumetti La bomba di Didier Alcante, Laurent-Frédéric Bollée e Denis Rodier de lo scoppio di Hiroshima dal punto di vista giapponese si trovano nel manga Gen di Hiroshima di Keiji Nakazawa, accanto a importanti testimonianze d’epoca, come il numero della rivista Time edito dopo la resa del Giappone e i numeri di Oggi  su Hiroshima e gli esperimenti di Bikini. La tragedia di Hiroshima è lo spunto anche di una storia di Martin Mystère, Le mille gru di Hiroshima  di Andrea Cavaletto e Fabio Piacentini, con una selezione di tavole digitali. Nel lungo periodo della Guerra Fredda l’energia nucleare e la bomba atomica sono raccontate nei fumetti, sia ipotizzando cosa succederebbe in caso di una guerra atomica sia mostrando un atomo amico e umanizzato. Da questo punto di vista sono emblematici Atomino Bip Bip, amico di Topolino creato da Romano Scarpa nel 1959, in mostra con illustrazioni, studi e una tavola della celebre storia Topolino e il Bip Bip-15  (1960), e Atomino, creato nel 1963 da Marcello Argilli e Vinicio Berti per il settimanale a fumetti Il Pioniere, oltre a molti popolari protagonisti alle prese con armi nucleari, come il tarzanide Akim, la perfida Satanik e il simpatico Kolosso. Uno spazio particolare è dedicato a due personaggi che prendono vita proprio da una bomba,  Godzilla e l’Incredibile Hulk. Godzilla, che nel 2024 festeggia 70 anni, è in mostra alcune tavole realizzate dal disegnatore Alberto Ponticelli per la miniserie Godzilla: Gangsters & Goliaths e per l’Incredibile Hulk sono esposti i più bei poster e gadget d’epoca insieme a spettacolari tavole dei grandi autori del personaggio, come Mark Bagley, Rick Leonardi, Alan Kupperberg. In mostra c’è anche una tavola di Watchmen, il capolavoro di Alan Moore e Dave Gibbons che vede tra i protagonisti Dottor Manhattan, un fisico nucleare che acquisisce immensi poteri dopo un esperimento di fisica subatomica. Il tema dei rischi che comportano le armi atomiche e l’energia nucleare è al centro anche di due storie di Diabolik, La luce del male (1998), in cui il Re del terrore aiuta un vecchio amico colpito dalle radiazioni degli esperimenti atomici su un’isola tropicale, e Incubo atomico (2007), dove Diabolik sventa la minaccia di un gruppo di terroristi. Il fiorente filone post-atomico vede gli autori immaginare come sarebbe il mondo dopo la catastrofe, come nel giapponese Ken il guerriero, serie manga molto amata, che nel 2023 festeggia quarant’anni di pubblicazioni. Tra supereroi atomici e dopobomba comici e tragici, la Bomba è una costante narrativa e la satira ha avuto un ruolo prezioso dove, oltre agli ipotetici effetti di una bomba atomica su Milano o altre città, contrasta i sogni di militari e dittatori con il dito sul bottone rosso. Giornali e documenti d’epoca completano la visione storica dalla percezione collettiva della Bomba, oltre che nella musica e nelle altre arti, modificando il costume. Read the full article
