Fires destroys historic Toronto church known for Group of Seven murals, June 9, 2024
Fire has destroyed a historic church in downtown Toronto that contained murals painted by three members of the Group of Seven. Dozens of firetrucks were dispatched to St. Anne’s Anglican Church on Sunday morning, where they were met with heavy flame and smoke, Toronto Fire Services deputy chief Jim Jessop said. Jessop said the doors of the church were locked when crews arrived and it is not believed anyone was inside the building. According to the church’s website, it was built in 1907-08 in the Byzantine Revival style and was declared a historic site in 1996. Three members of the Group of 7 – J.E.H Macdonald, Fred Varley and Frank Carmichael – were part of a group that were commissioned to paint and decorate the church. Global News

St. Anne's Anglican Church - J.E.H. MacDonald, Jan 14, 2021
J.E.H. MacDonald, founding member of the Group of Seven, and Head Designer for the artworks in St. Anne's Anglican Church in Toronto. Tour Leader Robin Sewell tells how that came about and how MacDonald's vision was carried out by the other artists, including two other members of the Group of Seven. Robin Sewell introduces MacDonald's three murals in St. Anne's: The Tempest, the Transfiguration and The Crucifixion. Special thanks for this collaboration between St. Anne's and the McMichael Collection of Canadian Art. This video also includes a segment by Sam Cheung of the McMichael Collection of Canadian Art linking MacDonald's works in St. Anne's with his more famous Group of Seven paintings. Sam Cheung focuses our attention on the 1921 painting Forest Wilderness, for the red colour palette it shares with MacDonald's works in St. Anne's. St. Anne's and McMichael will be collaborating over the next two videos in this series - featuring paintings by Franklin Carmichael and Frederick Varley at McMichael and at St. Anne's.
