didnât want to put this directly on lrb and derail it but I think when people reject the general idea of The Cloud thereâs an underlying anxiety about privacy & security thatâs like, totally fair. google classroom assignment generation etc. the good news is there are privacy-respecting storage options!! the bad news is that they are rarely free or foolproof. the more-good-news is that the learning curve is pretty doable with a couple days of youtube university and you can at least do like, some level of damage control with the free tiers lol
#like I havenât figured out a long term solution for my documents and photos yet so those are still in icloud & onedrive (ew)#but I use the free tier of proton for my calendar which is huge! google used to know where I was all the time and now it doesnât!#my goal is to eventually self host with nextcloud

So I know that the address of Nick Fuentes is being posted around (Iâm keeping it off of this post to prevent possible removal, but itâs all over if you look his name up on Tumblr). It appears that Google is censoring anything related to that specific address. Itâs blurred out on Google Maps (though there are pictures uploaded right next to it), and the only search results I got were real estate listings.
This is your friendly reminder that Big Tech is not your friend and they will comply with the oppressors. I know itâs not the most ideal solution, but if youâre concerned about privacy and security in the upcoming years, look into alternate services for your daily online life. Proton Mail is a great service for email, and they offer other things like VPN and cloud storage. I pay for a business account (about $15 US a month) because I use extra email addresses and personal domain names, but there are cheaper or free plans available.
You can also replace most of the online tools that Google, Apple, and Microsoft provide with third party or self-hosted services like Nextcloud. Iâm tech enough that I set up my own private server with Nextcloud, so Iâm in control of the flow and location of my data. If you have tech inclined friends, you could discuss setting up a shared server, or look into alternate solutions.
Our digital footprints are becoming a commodity which can be sold to the highest bidder or used to train data models. While it isnât always feasible, I urge you all to look into alternatives and make whatever changes fit your life the best. While itâs not always feasible to entirely get rid of Google, Microsoft, Apple, and/or Amazon from our lives, we can take steps to minimize what they can collect from us.

building an opensource collection of 'net services
hi there! im mia :) im a computer nerd with too much time on her hands.
im making this post to bring a project of mine into the world; a fully opensource and collaborative collection of online tools. this will grow over time, but for now, there is one thing active and two planned. (read on below)
CalicoDrive
a nextcloud instance! currently offering a bunch of very useful things:
50GB of free cloud storage
a Markdown notetaking tool
a shareable, open calendar
a photo gallery
web bookmark storage, and
some organisation and collaboration tools.
many of the cloud storage services we rely on are corporate, and require exorbitantly priced subscriptions. alongside that, data on them is often subject to a huge array of impenetrable terms/conditions.
what makes this different? firstly, your data is controlled by you. it is entirely encrypted on disk and can only be decrypted with your selected password. you own the data the same way you would were it on an external hard drive or flashstick.
secondly- its free! while you can pay 20$ once off or 5$ a month to upgrade storage quota and support the project, the core of it is entirely and utterly free to use.
matrix.calicocore
(full disclaimer- this service isn't online yet. it's planned to be active within the next month at the very maximum, very likely sooner.)
what's matrix? i am absolutely sure you've heard of IRC- internet relay chat. im also sure you've heard of discord.
matrix is a modern federated chat protocol- if you took the best of IRC, and you took the best of Discord, and combined them into an opensource and *free* protocol for real-time messaging? that's matrix, baby!
matrix functions similarly to the fediverse (more on that later). when you sign up, you select a homeserver, which is the infrastructure your account is hosted on. your homeserver determines who you're federated with, your most easily accessible spaces, and the little tag at the end of your name.
so what's matrix.calicocore going to be? a homeserver! the idea here is to bring communication and community into our hands, and away from the hands of big tech corporations who really don't care about us. it'll be federated with other spaces and servers, and run collectively.
fedi.calicocore
if you've ever used mastodon, fedi.calicocore will be a server compatible with it. this is still in the very very early stages as a project, so i cant detail much, but stay tuned.
things to note, disclaimers, etc
this project is in its early days. i cant guarantee perfect stability, though it has been tested and run for a few days already. please don't expect a perfect replacement for existing services YET.
secondly, in regards to calicodrive; your data is fully encrypted in two ways, both within the nextcloud instance and on the physical spinning rust. this means if you majorly forget your password, there's a possibility of losing it- but that trade-off is worth it for the security.
this all sounds great! how can i sign up?
for now, this is the link to the nextcloud:
https://drive.calicocore.space
in the very near future, there'll be a central discussion space on the matrix, too, which you're encouraged to introduce yourself on!
lastly:
who is this for?
these services and tools are made by a disabled trans woman. they will prioritise people vulnerable on the current internet, and focus on building a safe space for trans, non-binary, and queer people; as well as disabled people and people of colour.
you can sign up if you are not one of these, however you will be expected to defer to the marginalised members and be generally respectful of the purpose of the space!

Running your own infrastructure can be empowering. Whether you're managing a SaaS side project, self-hosting your favorite tools like Nextcloud or Uptime Kuma, running a game server, or just learning by doing, owning your stack gives you full control and flexibility. But it also comes with a cost. The good news? That cost doesnât have to be high. One of the core values of the LowEndBox community is getting the most out of every dollar. Many of our readers are developers, sysadmins, hobbyists, or small businesses trying to stretch limited infrastructure budgets. Thatâs why self-hosting is so popular hereâitâs customizable, private, and with the right strategy, surprisingly affordable. In this article, weâll walk through seven practical ways to reduce your self-hosting costs. Whether youâre just starting out or already managing multiple VPSes, these tactics will help you trim your expenses without sacrificing performance or reliability. These aren't just random tips, theyâre based on real-world strategies we see in action across the LowEndBox and LowEndTalk communities every day. 1. Use Spot or Preemptible Instances for Non-Critical Workloads Some providers offer deep discounts on âspotâ instances, VPSes or cloud servers that can be reclaimed at any time. These are perfect for bursty workloads, short-term batch jobs, or backup processing where uptime isnât mission-critical. Providers like Oracle Cloud and even some on the LowEndBox VPS deals page offer cost-effective servers that can be used this way. 2. Consolidate with Docker or Lightweight VMs Instead of spinning up multiple VPS instances, try consolidating services using containers or lightweight VMs (like those on Proxmox, LXC, or KVM). Youâll pay for fewer VPSes and get better performance by optimizing your resources. Tools like Docker Compose or Portainer make it easy to manage your stack efficiently. 3. Deploy to Cheaper Regions Server pricing often varies based on data center location. Consider moving your workloads to lower-cost regions like Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, or Midwest US cities. Just make sure latency still meets your needs. LowEndBox regularly features hosts offering ultra-affordable plans in these locations. 4. Pay Annually When It Makes Sense Some providers offer steep discounts for annual or multi-year plans, sometimes as much as 30â50% compared to monthly billing. If your project is long-term, this can be a great way to save. Before you commit, check if the provider is reputable. User reviews on LowEndTalk can help you make a smart call. 5. Take Advantage of Free Tiers Youâd be surprised how far you can go on free infrastructure these days. Services like: Cloudflare Tunnels (free remote access to local servers) Oracle Cloud Free Tier (includes 4 vCPUs and 24GB RAM!) GitHub Actions for automation Hetznerâs free DNS or Backblazeâs generous free storage Combined with a $3â$5 VPS, these tools can power an entire workflow on a shoestring budget. 6. Monitor Idle Resources Itâs easy to let unused servers pile up. Get into the habit of monitoring resource usage and cleaning house monthly. If a VPS is sitting idle, shut it down or consolidate it. Tools like Netdata, Grafana + Prometheus, or even htop and ncdu can help you track usage and trim the fat. 7. Watch LowEndBox for Deals (Seriously) This isnât just self-promo, itâs reality, LowEndBox has been the global market leader in broadcasting great deals for our readers for years. Our team at LowEndBox digs up exclusive discounts, coupon codes, and budget-friendly hosting options from around the world every week. Whether itâs a $15/year NAT VPS, or a powerful GPU server for AI workloads under $70/month, we help you find the right provider at the right price. Bonus: we also post guides and how-tos to help you squeeze the most out of your stack. Final Thoughts Cutting costs doesnât mean sacrificing quality. With the right mix of smart planning, efficient tooling, and a bit of deal hunting, you can run powerful, scalable infrastructure on a micro-budget. Got your own cost-saving tip? Share it with the community over at LowEndTalk! https://lowendbox.com/blog/1-vps-1-usd-vps-per-month/ https://lowendbox.com/blog/2-usd-vps-cheap-vps-under-2-month/ https://lowendbox.com/best-cheap-vps-hosting-updated-2020/ Read the full article

hi! i saw your post about downloading music and such. would be willing to talk more music players and organizers/libraries? specifically syncing between devices, such as from computer to phone?
hey there, sorry for taking so long to respond! i've been a little bit busy
for desktop
for desktop players, i mentioned dopamine in the last post. i've been using deadbeef, which is decently customizable and has last.fm support. VLC always exists
syncing
this section got kind of long, sorry! i've separated it into chunks to hopefully be more readable
there are some options depending on what you want. you could carry an old-fashioned USB around, but that's most likely not really convenient for most people.
for a lot of people, the best play is to keep the music locally on your computer (or on a hard drive) and sync it over to your phone, since computers usually have more storage
if you use android, syncthing does p2p synchronization (there are apps for ios too, but i'm not sure how good it is). i can't speak much to this, since i've never used syncthing myself
syncing over cloud services is an option. if whatever you use has a built-in music player (eg. you can play audio files on the google drive site and app), you could do that, though i wouldn't really recommend it.
there are very likely music apps that allow you to just pull music from a cloud storage account like google drive or onedrive, but i don't know any specific ones off the top of my head.
instead of using proprietary cloud services, it may be worth looking into nextcloud. there are some free-to-use instances, but you usually only get 2GB of storage, which might not be viable depending on how much music you want to sync. there's a music player "app" (extension). i'm not exactly sure if there's a music player on the nextcloud mobile app?
if you're using nextcloud or another cloud service that supports webDAV, you've got a lot more options available for music players. many music player apps support pulling from a webDAV server. just from a quick google search, here's one for ios (supports nextcloud itself too), and here's one for android. if you're on android, you'll probably find a lot more good options (take a look on github?)
i don't listen to much music from my personal collection at the moment since i have apple music (i wanna set up a server in the future), but what i did is add a synced folder in readdle's documents app, which pulls from a folder on a nextcloud instance. all of penelope scott's songs automatically download so i can listen offline, and the rest i can stream from the server.
speaking of apple music, if you're in the apple ecosystem, i'm pretty sure you can use icloud to sync your local music to your phone and listen there. here's a guide
if you're techy enough and have the time/effort, it may be worth getting a VPS, an old computer, or a raspberry pi and self-hosting a media streaming server. i've heard good things about navidrome (music-only) and jellyfin (video and audio). these have web players and pretty good mobile app integrationsâ you can find some by doing a quick search. for navidrome apps, look for "navidrome" or subsonic"
plex also seems pretty popular, but it's proprietary so i'd prefer looking into FOSS options
you could also set up a nextcloud instance if you want, but i don't really see why you'd prefer that if you have the option for a dedicated media server
i hope this covers most of what you wanted to know! this is something i'm still wrangling with myself, so there's a lot i wanted to talk about. let me know if you have any more questions [:

This is good to know, because I was definitely looking at it and assuming they were going to just do the free accounts.
I like to take any opportunity to plug open-source stuff, so for people who want to switch for free cloud storage: I'd like to recommend Nextcloud. It's a free and open-source cloud service software with a lot of the same functionalities as Google Drive! There's a few different tutorials around that help you make the switch with a minimum of pain. They have a list of providers on their site where you can sign up for a 2-5 GB free account. You can also host your own instance if you have an old but reliable computer on hand (mine runs on an old laptop with crappy battery and processing power, but that's still in solid shape), but that's a bit more technically involved. You can even use it to replace Google's photo backup!
Caveats: the word processor isn't amazing, but it works decently well. I can't speak to the collaboration aspect because I've never tried to use it, although I know it exists. Setup can also take some fiddling for the photo element because the apps you probably use are expecting Google photos, so you might have to poke around for different photo viewer apps.
This Google Drive AI scraping bullshit actually makes me want to cry. My entire life is packed into Google Drive. All of my writing over the years, all of my academic documents, everything.
Iâm just so overwhelmed with all the shit Iâm going to have to move. Iâm lucky to have Scrivener, but online data storage has been super important as Iâve had so many shitty computers, and the only reason I havenât lost work is because Google Drive has been my backup storage unit.
My partner has recommended gitlab to move my files to - it seems useful, and I can try and explain more about what it is and how it works when I get more familiar with it. Iâm unsure if itâs a text editor, or can work that way. He was explaining something about the version history that I donât quite understand right now but might later. Iâm just super overwhelmed and frustrated that this is the dystopia we live in right now.

Was ist Authinfo?

sixth reblog of this, just realized i should post a potential alternative i use.
i have an old computer in my closet that i use to host my website and some other web services on. the only expenses i have to pay for it is the url, which is $10 a year. my parents pay the internet bills, as i still live with them. and the best part is that if you do it right you don't even need a url.
one of these web services i host is called nextcloud.
it's pretty much, if set up properly, a free and open source alternative to google drive. you have to be decently tech savvy to set it up, but I'm sure you can find a tutorial on YouTube or some random website, if you don't want to use Google software at all.
it has a web interface like google drive (which can be used to edit odt/docx files if set up properly) or you can just use the official client app to sync it to your computer's file system. i don't know if there's a way to do this on chromebooks, but i do know that the web client works on them.
đšâ ïžATTENTION FELLOW WRITERSâ ïžđš
If you use Google Docs for your writing, I highly encourage you to download your work, delete it from Google Docs, and transfer it to a different program/site, unless you want AI to start leeching off your hard work!!!
I personally have switched to Libre Office, but there are many different options. I recommend checking out r/degoogle for options.
Please reblog to spread the word!!

Going FOSS: An Intro to Open-Source software for studyblr (and also some privacy related bits)
Source for Header Image
Intro & attempt at TLDR
Hey everyone! Today Iâd like to tell yâall something about Open Source Software, and also Why this should matter to you! Thisâll probably be the first post of a series I intend to do, because I believe the Studyblr community, even the non-nerd folks, could really benefit from switching some things out in their digital environment. Since this is a long post, I attempted to summarise it below, please do read on if you have the spoons tho!
TLDR?
FOSS stands for âFree and Open Source Softwareâ the âfreeâ part doesnât necessarily mean itâs free as in free pizza, but mostly means free as in freedom.
Thereâs a humongous amount of variants on this concept, but the core of FOSS specifically is the four freedoms:
1. To run the program however you want and for whatever you want
2. To study how the program works and to change it in whatever way you want
3. To be able to share it with whomever you feel like
4. To be able to share your modified version with whomever you want
Thereâs a whole host of software licenses built around these concepts, you can check those out at the Open Source Initiative website, or at Choose A License. Both have a good summary of what they all stand for.
Open Source software is used for a lot of products, nearly every single webserver is an Apache Linux server, Google chrome is built on top of their open source chromium (google is still the devil, but yâknow, itâs an example), and even deep deep down, Apple computers run on top of a Linux Kernel. Many more can be listed, but I wonât do that otherwise this isnât a TLDR anymore.
Now, Why is this important for you? The Open Source Initiative summed it up real nicely already, but heres a short paraphrase:
Control & Security. If software is open source then you can check if it really works the way it does, and to make sure itâs not spying on you. Even if you donât have the skills for it, someone else who does will be able to check. Also if you donât like how something works in a program, then youâll be able to change it or find someone elseâs changed version that you like more.
Training. People who want to learn programming can use the code to see what makes programs tick, as well as use it as a guide for their own projects.
Stability. Because everythingâs out in the open, that means someone else can take up maintaining a project or make a successor of it, in case the original developers suddenly quit working on it. This is especially important when itâs software thatâs absolutely critical for certain tasks.
Community. Itâs not just one program. Itâs a lot of people working together to make, test, use, and promote a project they really love. Lots of projects end up with a dedicated fanbase that helps support the developers in continuing to work on the software.
Iâd like to add one more tho: Privacy, which ties in a lot with the security part. Nowadays with protests going on and everything being online due to the pandemic, folks have been and will be confronted much more with the impact of privacy, and lack thereof. Open Source software means that if any company or group tries to spy on you, then you and anyone who feels like checking, will be able to know and take action on it. Hereâs the EFF page on privacy and why it should matter to you
If that got your attention then read on past the readmore button! Or, if nothing else maybe check out the Free and Open Source Software portal on Wikipedia? Or maybe the resources page of the Open Source Initiative?
Terminology: Letâs get that out of the way first
Open Source: The source code that a program is made up of is freely accessible, anyone can look at it and check whether it works well enough or to make sure it doesnât spy on you.
FOSS: Free and Open Source Software. This doesnât mean that you donât need to pay for it, itâs free as in freedom and free speech, not free pizza.
There are four freedoms associated with FOSS:
The freedom to run the program as you wish, for any purpose (freedom 0).
The freedom to study how the program works, and change it so it does your computing as you wish (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help others (freedom 2).
The freedom to distribute copies of your modified versions to others (freedom 3).
By doing this you can give the whole community a chance to benefit from your changes. Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
FLOSS: Free and Libre Open Source Software. This time it is âfreeâ as in free pizza. The âlibreâ is french for âfreeâ as in freedom.
GRATIS: Sometimes people use this word to mean âfreeâ as in free pizza. Usually alongside âFOSSâ
Licenses : A license is something that tells others what they can or cannot do with your code. Licenses also apply to art and literature, those are copyright licenses. There are many different software licenses and Iâm not going to be able to list them all.
The biggest players however are:
Apache License 2.0
The 3-Clause BSD License
GNU General Public License (also known as GPL)
MIT License
Mozilla Public License 2.0
Thereâs even more and you can find a list of them Here on the Open Source Initiative site Thereâs so many licenses that thereâs even a Choose A License site, where you can pick a license depending on what you want it to achieve
Who and/or what even uses open source software?
You donât need to be some nerd to benefit from Open Source software, in fact, youâre using open source software right now! The biggest example is the whole entire internet. Websites are stored on servers, and nearly every single webserver is a Linux server. The second biggest browser Firefox is open source, and even google chrome is built on top of âchromiumâ an open source base. If you dont use an iPhone, then youâre probably on an Android phone. Guess what? Android is part of the Android Open Source Project, which is then built upon a GNU/Linux base. All Open Source. Chromebooks? Built on top of a Linux kernel (like a non-patented engine you could put into any motor vehicle youâd like). Heck, even Apple computers are, at their core, built on top of a Linux kernel.
Neat apps you may wanna check out!
Iâve made a little list of apps that might be especially useful for studyblr folks, but depending on how well this post does Iâll probably make some more posts for specific apps.
TiddlyWiki, has a bajillion different ways to organise your thoughts, and also a lot of variant builds out there. Check out their table of contents if you feel lost! Thereâs versions available for most big browsers, as well as windows, linux, mac, android, and iOS.
AnyType, is an app that looks and almost exactly like notion, but is much more decentralised. Theyâre currently still in development but if you want to support them, sign up for early access and give them some feedback so they know what works and doesnât! Theyâre still in closed alpha, but are intending to give beta access to about 100 folks at a time throughout 2021, so please sign up if this looks interesting to you!
Trilium Notes, is slightly more like a ânotebookâ, however you can arrange your notes in nearly infinitely deep folders. You can use things like Relation Maps & Link Maps to visualise your notes and how they go together. Thereâs even more they do and I just cant list it all, so go check out their stuff for a more comprehensive overview! Works on windows, linux, and (unsupported) mac
LibreOffice and ONLYOFFICE are two office suites that function just as well as micro$oft office, often Even Better in my experience. Iâve used LibreOffice for years now and honestly? never going back. OnlyOffice is technically free (as in pizza), but itâs a slight hassle to get everything set up, cause you need to set it up on a server. They have a paid and hosted version available with educational discounts, but honestly iâd go with LibreOffice.
OnePile, is an app I havenât used myself since it only runs on Apple stuff. But Iâve heard a lot of good things about it so thatâs why itâs in here. It looks like it works similar to most general ânote taking notebookâ apps. Looks really pretty too honestly.
EtherPad, is similar to ONLYOFFICE, however this oneâs a lot more focused on specifically text documents. Works with real-time collaboration which is really neat.
Anything that FramaSoft has going on. Theyâre a non-profit organisation, dedicated to promoting digital freedom. A lot of open source cloud related things are not really useful to people who donât have the time and/or money to set up a whole-ass server. Thatâs where FramaSoft comes in, they do it for you. Just about everything they offer (hereâs a full overview) are free (as in free pizza). They also have a separate site to help you get started!
Itâs not free to run it all on their side, so if you find yourself interested in using their services please try to support them any way you monetarily can! (they even have a âminetestâ server (not minecraft, deeeefinitely not minecraft))
Joplin!! Which is also what I used to write this post so I wouldnât have to use The Tumbleâs post writing thing. Itâs good for taking notes, has a bunch of neat plug-ins, and can also sync with a variety of cloud services!
Nextcloud For if you want to go just that little bit further on the open source and the privacy. Nextcloud has honestly way too many features for me to list, but the important parts are that itâs a nigh perfect replacement for office365, and probably even GSuite. The one caveat is that you either gotta host it yourself, or get someone else to host it for you. Framasoft (mentioned above), has a nextcloud instance. It works on just about every single platform, and can integrate with an absurd amount of services. Hereâs a list of providers that work with nextcloud, and what different apps they have installed on their server.
I personally use Disroot, because theyâre a local (as in, my country) non-profit that offer about 2gb of free storage, and then for about 15 cents per GB per month you can get more storage if you want. They also have an email service which is hella neat. Their one main rule is Do Not Use For Business Purposes, because theyâre here to help the individual folks, not companies.
Neat Links you may also want to look at!
Here are some sources, and also resources that I used for this post. Thereâs also some stuff here that I think folks may be interested in in general.
General Wikipedia Article on Open Source Software
The Free and Open Source Software portal on Wikipedia
Resources page of the Open Source Initiative
Free Software Foundation definition of âfree softwareâ
itsfoss page on what FOSS means
itsfoss page on the history of FOSS
Open Source Software Foundation list of projects and apps they really like
Open Source Initiative on âthe open source wayâ, and how it goes beyond software
Check out literally anything the Electronic Frontier Foundation has going on maybe?
TED talk on privacy and why itâs important
The Surveillance Self Defense project by the EFF
This EFF page on privacy for students
ExpressVPN article on privacy (not necessarily endorsing this company, just a good article)
Whatâs next?
Iâll probably make some more posts on specific kinds of software that I think folks may like. Or maybe a general overview on the more privacy forcused reasons and solutions for doing all of this.
Future post ideas, none of these are set in stone:
Open source Note taking apps
Replacements for just about Every Single google service I can think of
My personal setup
Open source / privacy conscious social media that studyblr folks may be into
Chatting, Calling, Videocalling: Discord and whatsapp alternatives etc
??? More studyblr apps that could do with a FOSS alternative??
How to support open source when youâre not a big fudgin nerd
How to be better at digital privacy and security, while still maintaining that studyblr aesthetic
Apps, software, other stuff, for specific areas of study maybe?
Feel free to suggest other ideas! Or leave feedback! This is my first big resource post so I wanna know if/how I can do better when I make another one!

Starting Goal:
I have a Dell OptiPlex 9020, i7-4770k, 32GB RAM and an Nvidia 770 (or something like that).
I want to turn it into a home server that hosts the following:
NextCloud
Jellyfin(?)
Kodi
HomeAssistant
Bitwarden
Some sort of Knowledge Organisation tool
Some media indexing tools
Will I need like, a Reverse Proxy? or a DMZ?
This machine will be plugged into my TV (thus Kodi), and also piped into my LAN, preferably with outside access so that NextCloud, Jellyfin, HomeAssistant and Bitwarden can all be away from the home.
I suspect I will make heavy use of Docker.
Will be giving this another read, too:

PSA: Switch to Signal Today
After WhatsApp announced they would be changing their TOS, my relatives asked me, the resident computer guy, what other messaging app they could use.
My recommendation: Switch to signal.
Recommend signal to friends and relatives.
I recommend Signal (https://signal.org) wholeheartedly. It has all of the features of WhatsApp, it has encrypted messages, encrypted group chat, and encrypted voice and video calls. It uses your phone number to set up your identity and your phoneâs contacts to find other people on signal, so you should not have trouble setting up Signal as a replacement for WhatsApp.
If you have been living under a rock, hereâs what happened: Facebook will soon start using the contact data of WhatsApp users to complete their data collection for Facebook profiles. Even if you do not have a Facebook account, you and all your WhatsApp contacts will be added to the Facebook âsocial graphâ.
Signal is it is run by a well-funded American non-profit started by Moxie Marlinspike. The code is open source and has been thoroughly tested and audited. They donât collect or sell personal data, and they donât show ads.
There are other apps that may be more appropriate for certain use cases, but Signal covers all of the WhatsApp use cases. I run my own NextCloud Talk instance, which is a more than adequate replacement for Zoom, but not for WhatsApp.
Of course you can tell people to use Jabber/XMPP, matrix.org, threema.ch (open source and reasonably secure, but an account on there costs money), a DHT-based instant messenger (like Tox), a self-hosted rich internet chatroom (like Rocket.Chat), or a federated social network. You can tell people to use an onion-routed super-secret messaging system, or a completely decentralised social network, or handwritten HTML on their own personal web space.
These may all be good ideas, and they cover many different use cases.
But none of these are a drop-in replacements for WhatsApp. Signal is a drop-in replacement for WhatsApp, and it is free. If you want your whole family to switch away from WhatsApp, a paid service might be a hindrance. If your uncle uses WhatsApp to talk to his friends in his darts club, a paid app like threema might be a tough sell, because you have to convince your uncle that his friends will spend their money on that app, too.
Now is the perfect moment to switch your friends and family from WhatsApp to Signal.
And once weâre done with that, we can think about replacing Slack, Skype, Zoom, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

When stray from Google n Microsoft, what tend happen either:
The amount space can use for free much smaller than Google and Microsoft per account,
Not have all tools or features that Google n Microsoft have, or just 1 specialization.
Need "Self-host" or some other hands-on technical thing
This mean that might have to use multiple these, improvise a combination workflow, and/or invest time n energy into setting up
That in mind though ...
proton.me - Mail (1GB), Calendar (3 versions), Drive (1GB), VPN (1 connection), Password Manager (1 vault).
cozy cloud - Drive (5GB), Password Manager, Office (read), Notes - and some other features
cryptpad - Suite - Documents, Spreadsheets, and such. Drive (1GB) in official instance.
Terabox - Just Drive, but 1TB or 1000GB.
Transfernow - Just file transfers (5GB per transfer file)
fromsmash - Just file transfers ("unlimited" file size, but if file above 12gb it slow down while upload)
syncthing (selfhost but quick) - Just synchronizing files between devices
seafile (selfhost) - File transfer, sharing, and syncing (3 users)
of course there also app alternatives like Libre Office and OnlyOffice (self-host)
and main self-host full suites like filecloud and nextcloud (the pricing on those two website are for if you don't "self-host")
-
Self-hosting mean when you setup an app or service to connect to internet through your server / computer or someone else's.
Usually, the "cost" of if free, depend on what "server" use and how. So there people that try self-host on their own computers
Generally, self-host done on:
1. an old unused computer left running on.
2. a dedicated computer.
3. a cloud with a service with free tiers or cheap for app hosting. (though the ones with generous free tiers tend be big companies - like Amazon and Microsoft)
In other words, it require some technical literacy of that type if go this route...
There are tutorials though, like:
youtube
Self-hosting a whole thing with many options and can be overwhelming ("awesome selfhosted" list)
Also general "switch away from google" playlist (though most videos too broad for topic)
Is kinda complicated at moment.
-
Disclaimer: These not all options available in general, but are ones Magz can remember.
does anyone know a good FREE alternative to google docs, drive etc. i'm trying to systematically remove google from my life (side note: it is very fucking difficult) & i can't afford to buy microsoft 365 or anything
