Setting up for the Hole in the Wall scene in Casino, 1994
The location was 750 Fremont, dressed up as a fictional location of The Jewelers of Las Vegas. Across the street is Flick Theatre, 719 Fremont St. Buildings on both sides of the street were demolished in 2008.

memories.
Sight.
Just like the bright lights
That shone on my face that one friday night
When nothing in the world seemed more important
Than the simple joy of being with my family as a family
All of fremont street was entirely dormant
But, wow, was it incredible, how there was no sign of anyone driving or walking frantically
Smiles are so contagious that a smile can make any other person, including yourself, just a little bit happier
“It could make a person’s day less crappier”
Is what I was raised being told
It might even make a person less cold
I have moved from family to family
So I never got used to having a family to call my own
But when I looked far out into the crowd
of my 8th grade graduation and saw her waving and smiling at me with such pride
I lit up immediately and knew for the first time
I was somewhere good.
Hearing.
[Oh my God, how desperately I want him to hear me.]
Babies crying. The first miracle in a person’s life.
Horrible scraping on a chalkboard like it’s from a knife.
“I love you”
“I miss you”
“I want to be with you.”
Very few words.
Yet Very powerful sentences.
Quite coincidental how sentimental and consequential
These statements are to each other.
You cannot have one without the other.
Breaking.
Screaming.
Crashing.
Banging.
Thrashing.
All horrible sounds that can make a person turn in a rush.
When you look at your sister and gently tell her, shush.
You need to seem like you are not scared
So that she feels safe and prepared
For whatever could happen next
Because when your whole life is undetermined, you tend to feel like you may be hexed.
Touch
A gentle caress on the back of the neck.
The soft or passionate rhythm of a kiss.
The safety and connection from an embrace.
The bond that comes with and from sex.
All of them are something I reminisce.
His touch.
Oh how I love his touch.
Oh how I miss his touch.
Felt so infinite
Now feels so indefinite.
I miss when I used to be able to touch him whenever.
It just felt like my forever.
I wish to make it clear that touch is so sacred.
It can make you feel so naked.
Even more so when you are in love with the person.
Although You never know if tomorrow is for certain.
Smell.
Such a strong way to remember.
For example Turkey is associated with November
And spruce for December
Nose blindness is such an intriguing thing to me
The fact a human can get so comfortable and used to a scent
Their brain defines the smell as “nothing”
I do not want to be nose blind to anything
(Even though I know this is entirely impossible)
I want to remember each time I smell my home that I am home.
I want to know what I smell like.
Do I smell like the artificially created smell of linen?
Or do I smell like the artificially created smell of vanilla?
When I say artificially created, I mean candles.
Candles never get the smell right
I can not smell “cherry blossom” PINK lotion the same again
Because all I remember is when I was thirteen
And who wants to remember when they were thirteen.
I still get scared to this day whenever I smell a musty, wet type of smell.
Because all I can pinpoint it to is a man who did not make my childhood years well.
He wore a big large green coat.
I avoid the memories that are associated with every time he put on this coat.
It is just rote.
Taste.
Smell and taste are intertwined with each other.
If you cannot smell you cannot taste.
I kind of want a relationship like taste and smell have.
Where we are so brilliant as individuals
And we always work together to be our best selves
I feel like I am more taste and he is smell in this scenario.
I can not be without him.
Call it codependency if you want, but it is more than that.
It is more intimate than that.
I crave him like a man who has been stranded on an island for a month would crave a hamburger.
I just want to be like how we were.
There it is.
Sight.
Hearing.
Touch.
Smell.
Taste.
The five senses of a human.
The five inputs of memories.

Dead Motels of Fremont Street, Las Vegas, Nevada, May 8th, 2022
10 - 15 years ago, many of these motels were in bad shape, but still renting their rooms. Now at a glance, they look better - signs restored/rebuilt and motels repainted - but are closed. All of them were bought by Tony Hsieh of Zappos and the “Downtown Project” development group years ago but a definite plan is unclear.

Huge fan of yours Brian. Just made a tumblr account solely because I learned that you had one. This is random as hell but I was wondering if you had any interest in Salsa music or Latin music in general. I've been diving through the Fania records catalogue over the past two years and was curious if you've ever had any relationship to that scene, especially as a former resident of New York City where it all happened.
Apologies... I have really slacked on getting to my inbox here and it's so backed up I may never get to all of the messages.
To answer your question, I'm not super knowledgable about salsa or latin music. Been listening to a fair amount of the Okute album that came out this summer though. Most of my recent exposure to latin music has come from Russian Circles' tour manager Luis Mota, who DJs all kinds of modern latin music as a side gig.
Speaking of which, Seattleites... come dance your ass off to some latin beats at Bar House in Fremont with DJ Mota Vation on October 8th.

Places to avoid in Portland during (and let’s be honest, even after) we beat this thing:
These are venues that have decided that even though it’s not required by law, they would like to get an early jump on enforcing at least two covid-19 vaccinations from their staff and patrons (ignoring of course natural immunity from those who have had it, the fact that none of the current gene therapies on the market prevent the spread or stop the vaccinated from catching covid, or the fact that it’s an experimental treatment with some alarming side effects and not a real vaccine at all).

“The Washington Post keeps track of all the victims of police shootings. Let’s look at some of the tragedies of the last 3 years.
In 2017, Police shot and killed 223 black men.
Most of the victims were armed. 131 had a gun. 35 had a knife. 21 were unarmed.
Many of the victims were fleeing the scene of the crime, on foot or by car.
Let’s focus on the most brutal cases, where police killed an unarmed victim who was not fleeing the scene of a crime.
There were 9 unarmed people who were shot. You can Google the names of each one to see what happened.
The first name on that list was Jean Pedro Pierre. You can watch the video of the encounter here:
https://youtu.be/4y9s0jRajdc
In short, Jean punches one cop, gets tased ineffectively, drags the cop around by his feet for about a minute, charges towards a second cop, then gets shot.
The second is Brian Easley, who took hostages in a bank:
https://www.mdjonline.com/news/cobb-officer-who-killed-man-in-bank-standoff-cleared/article_6eabd398-b607-11e7-879a-27eff6a5c746.html
The 3rd is Dejuan Guillory. Circumstances are unclear, it sounds like he got in a verbal and then physical altercation with a cop, then walked away, then the cop got him on the ground and shot him. At some point, Dejuan’s girlfriend jumped on the cop’s back and bit his neck. This one’s totally not obvious to me, the victim was needlessly aggressive, but it could also be that the cop lost his temper and murdered Dejuan, in which case the cop should definitely be in jail.
https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/death-dejuan-guillory-article-1.3315102
4th, Marc Brandon Davis, I can’t find enough information to comment on.
5th is Ricco Devante Holden. Sounds like he was drunk, got in a fight with a cop, got tased, fought his way into a police car, and then got shot.
https://www.ktbs.com/news/man-killed-in-altercation-with-police-chief-has-criminal-record/article_ebb7aba0-3f2e-11e7-b3a0-fb770fb2376c.html
6th is Jordan Edwards, a 15 year old victim. You can watch the video here:
https://youtu.be/l2M75moIXFY
It’s kind of chaotic — the cops are breaking up a party, someone starts firing gunshots outside, people are fleeing, one car ignores multiple police demands to stop and keeps driving, one officer shoots. He says that he was worried that the car would hit him or his partner, it looks like he made the wrong call. The officer got a 15 year sentence for the shooting.
7th is Alteria Woods, a 21 year old pregnant woman hit in the crossfire during a SWAT raid. Cops claim that her boyfriend used her as a human shield. There are not a lot of other details available:
GIFFORD, Fla. - A 21-year-old pregnant woman was killed during a Sunday morning shootout amid a SWAT raid at Florida…www.cbsnews.com
8th is Nana Adomako, who went into a Verizon store, grabbed a phone from an employee, hit him, and threatened to kill him. The officer found Nana outside, got into a fight with him, couldn’t win the fight even with the help of his police dog, and shot the suspect:
FREMONT, Calif. (KGO) -- The brother of a man Fremont Police shot and killed last week is talking with ABC7 News about…abc7news.com
9th is Darrion Barnhill. Officers approached him after being called for someone beating on a door, they found he had multiple outstanding warrants for assault (and his girlfriend had filed for protection from him). He assaulted the officers, threw one on the ground. Officers tazed him and shot him, it’s not clear whether they could have simply tazed him.
CLOSE A 23-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday night by Henderson County deputies after officers responded to a…www.commercialappeal.com
These are just the unarmed victims of 2017.
Maybe I just picked a bad year?
In 2019, the number of similar victims (unarmed, not fleeing from a crime) dropped to 4.
We have Atatiana Jefferson, who died from some very bad police work, the cop acted like a prowler outside her house, and then shot her through her window:
https://youtu.be/UHFpP8Vma_0
But we also have Channara Tom Pheap, who assaulted a cop. He choked the cop, grabbed the cop’s taser, and used it on him:
Knoxville Police Department Officer Dylan Williams was justified in fatally shooting Channara "Philly" Pheap in August…www.knoxnews.com
We have Melvin Watkins, who came to a party, had a few drinks and got into a fight. Other partygoers called the cops, hoping they could escort him away. For unclear reasons, the officer shot Melvin instead. This looks like an unnecessary homicide:
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The wife of a man killed by an East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office (EBRSO) deputy Saturday…www.wafb.com
And we have Kevin Bruce Mason, who threatened to kill a cop and later got shot. He’d shot a cop earlier in his life.
A man was found dead inside a Northwest Baltimore home after a Baltimore police officer fired shots at him during an…www.baltimoresun.com
When we talk about lots of unarmed black victims, murdered by police, it’s rare. It’s often people that are assaulting cops. It is sometimes cops that have lost control of a violent situation, after having already tried using a taser.
It’s not always George Floyd or Philando Castile or the other, most tragic events you see on the news. These tragedies do happen. Innocent black men are killed by the police. Several people get killed for holding a toy weapon, every year. Those cases are fucking tragic, as well. But the average black man killed by police is armed with a gun, fleeing the scene of a crime, or assaulting an officer.
Are you surprised by this? Does this sound different than the news you read?
As riots begin to sweep the nation, NPR writes about police brutality.
They give examples of how black people have died:
We wanted to learn more about each person’s final moments before the police ended their lives. Here’s some of what we learned:
Eric Garner had just broken up a fight, according to witness testimony.
Walter Scott was going to an auto-parts store.
Philando Castile was driving home from dinner with his girlfriend.
Eric Reason was pulling into a parking spot at a local chicken and fish shop.
Dominique Clayton was sleeping in her bed.
Breonna Taylor was also asleep in her bed.
I recognized some of the names. Eric Garner. Philando Castile. Breonna Taylor.
And I didn’t recognize some of the other names.
“Dominique Clayton was sleeping in her bed.”
That sounds horrible. A cop murdered a woman sleeping in her own bed. Why would a cop do that? Google the name:
A Mississippi officer has been taken into custody for the murder of a 32-year-old woman who was reportedly his…meaww.com
The cop was having an affair with the murdered woman. But he didn’t want his wife to find out. NPR is billing it as racist police brutality, when it’s a love affair between a white man and a black woman. He’d bought her a car and was buying her a house. I don’t know what to call it. A tragedy? Domestic violence? Not police brutality. It appears that he’s still under trial for her murder.
Or, NPR says,
“Eric Reason was pulling into a parking spot at a local chicken and fish shop.”
You can watch the video of what happened:
VALLEJO - The city of Vallejo has released four videos showing a resident pulling a gun on an off-duty cop as the two…www.mercurynews.com
Eric Reason and an off duty cop got in a fight over a parking spot. Eric went to his car, got a gun and shows it to the cop, threatening him. The cop got his own gun out and killed the man. The cop shot him as he was running away. A fucked up incident in many ways! Also, both men are black!
A lot of the cases are ambiguous. Walter Scott got stopped in traffic, ran from a cop, got in a fight, got tased, kept running. Cop shot him in the back. Pretty awful, sounds like incorrect police behavior. But NPR only reports that Scott was driving to the store.
NPR gives the impression that if you’re black, you’re not even safe in your own bed. You can’t even pull into a parking lot safely.
The reality is that you’re usually safe, as long as you do not wave a gun at cops or assault them.
The number of unarmed police shooting victims has declined since 2015:
Tumblr media
The news publicizes the shit out of the worst cases, because that’s what gets clicks. And it has consequences. The riots right now are one consequence. And people are dying.
As of June 2, 2020, eleven deaths have been confirmed during the George Floyd demonstrations.
In today’s social media dystopia, you can watch the people dying. Here’s one black man who was killed by looters.
https://twitter.com/stillgray/status/1267945466357927936
And violence has generally risen in some cities. In Chicago, shootings soared over the weekend, 92 people were shot, 27 were killed:
27 people were killed and at least 92 were wounded by gun violence in Chicago’s most violent weekend of the year so…www.wifr.com
And, if you’ve forgotten, we’re still in the middle of a pandemic. People of color have been disproportionately represented among the 100,000 Americans that have died so far. We’ll have to wait and see if these mass gatherings accelerate the spread of the virus.
The sad reality in all this is that blacks in America really are struggling. But police brutality is only one of their worries. Black people are unemployed and impoverished at high rates. Many live in violent communities. The murder rate in Black America is 6 times what it is in White America. About 8,000 black lives are lost to murder every year, mostly young black men in big cities shooting each other.
And the murder rate has gone up, as of late. After 2 decades of declining, America’s murder rate went up in 2015 and 2016:
Tumblr media
Some people think the increase in murders is because of less policing that started after the Ferguson protests. Others say that it’s because black people are afraid to call the police, because they think that the police will murder them, now more than ever.
Regardless of the cause, black people need safer communities.
This is not a struggle between good guys (BLM, antifa, white liberals) and bad guys (cops, Republicans, the alt right). But I see people on Facebook saying that, every day.
This is a very complicated discussion about how to make black neighborhoods safer, how to reduce criminal behavior in black neighborhoods, how to help with poverty, how to help with mental health, and how to improve policing.
Let me be clear. None of these protests will help black communities. People have lost lives. They have lost apartment buildings that have been burned down. They have lost the stores they need to shop at and work at.
This will trigger even more white flight to the suburbs, leaving poorly funded, segregated schools, and less jobs and opportunities for the people left behind.
And this will likely empower the Republicans. If the Democratic mayors and governors can’t provide law and order, voters will turn to the alternative.
I don’t have the answers to fixing our world. I think this event is ultimately driven by high unemployment and inequality. It’s driven by tribalism and dehumanizing the other side. I think police brutality is just the catalyst. Once this is over, I think we’ll have to work on improving all of these things. But, at the moment, all I can say is:
Stop the fucking riots.
Keep the protests peaceful. It’s the only way to win.

Used cars, 800 Fremont St, 1978 – aka The Empty Club.
Utilitarian Moderne ... Although Las Vegas is very much an automobile town dominated by street traffic and transportation related facilities, very few examples of early gas stations remain. Gas station architecture has generally been dominated by corporate designers and select company themes. Such buildings were available in prefabricated form along with a distributorship. This design used a small concrete enclosure and mouldings very much in the then current streamlined Moderne style. The second more square canopy has crisp squared corners and was added slightly later in a commercial style closer to International than Moderne.

SONITA ALIZADEH // have you seen LAYLA KARZAI around town? We’re trying to make sure they’re still in town, especially with everything that’s been happening lately. SHE is a 20 year old CIS FEMALE. currently residing in Perfection Valley, but they’re originally from FREMONT, CALIFORNIA. they are best known for being an UP-AND-COMING AUTHOR, and i hear they’re pretty BRIGHT-EYED yet also INTRUSIVE at times; i hope they continue to survive.
ABOUT LAYLA.
Layla was born on March 8th, 1999.
Her parents had both come from Afghanistan as children, their parents taking them with them as they escaped the Soviet-Afghan War. Her mom and her family was originally from Khost and settled in Washington, DC. Her dad and his family were originally from Herat and settled in Los Angeles, California. They met at the University of California at Berkeley, where her mother studied Political Science and her father studied Biology and instantly hit it off. They married while still attending school, and a few years after graduation, they had Layla.
She has one younger brother, who is two years younger than her.
She knows fluent Dari, but she always loved the English language. The way that her parents would build her vocabulary before she got to school was she would wake up to a stack of ten notecards with a word written on it and would have to find what she believed to be the matching definition to each somewhere in the house.
Her love of creative writing started when she was in the first grade. Everyone in the class wrote a short, ten-page, story. And she couldn’t have loved it more. In the fifth grade, she had to write a mystery short story, thirty-pages. One could just see how her eyes lit up.
In high school, she took AP classes for English. In her free time, she would write her novel, writing what she knew. Writing her story. Sure, the protagonist had a different name, Khalida Zahir, and sure Khalida was from rural Kentucky instead of a Californian city. But everything else was her. It was about an Afghan American teen growing up in a post-9/11 world, never feeling truly American because of how people around her would treat her. Never feeling truly Afghan because her parents had left during the Soviet-Afghan War, nearly two decades before she was born. Learning to love herself.
When she started her novel at 14 years old, she never planned to publish it. It was solely therapeutic, for her to express something about herself that she did not know how to otherwise bring to the attention of others. To understand what her identity meant. To cope. To survive. At the time she had started, she wasn’t even telling her parents that she was writing this.
On her 16th birthday, she did tell them, however. She had decided that she wanted to take creative writing more seriously, maybe even major in it in college. Her parents had also, for her 16th birthday, gotten her a new computer, and she felt she needed to rise to their attention her novel, as she was unsure how to transfer the file. Her parents read it and loved it, insisting to their daughter that she had a real talent.
She finished her novel at 17 and submitted her work to different agents. Eventually, she got one to click. Got her novel professionally edited, and then published by HarperCollins when she was 18 years old.
She still wasn’t going to let being a published author stop her education though and started at the University of California at Riverside majoring in Creative Writing in the Fall 2017 semester.
However, she felt more drained of any creativity attending university than anything else. After the Fall 2018 semester ended, with only three semesters under her belt, she dropped out. In January 2019, she moved to Perfection Valley, hoping the relocation helps as she works on her new novel, which is a mystery novel.
For the record, she is bisexual.
She is a Sunni Muslim.
I’ll eventually get a real, proper biography up but that could take months so have this in the meantime. If there’s anything you want to know about her, just shoot me an IM on here or discord.
ABOUT THE MUN (NATALIE).
Heyy, I’m Natalie! I’m a 22 year old (who sometimes forgets she’s 22 and keeps writing 21 oops). I use she/her/her’s pronouns and live in Pennsylvania, so that’s EST! I’m mixed Aamsskáápipikani, Lenape, and White (mostly Irish, Scottish, and German with some Sardinian, Russian, and Scandinavian). I used to watch a lot of the SyFy channel (before I lost it on my TV because we went down to a bare minimum plan), shamefully at one point thought A Christmas Twister was a good movie?? I haven’t roleplayed in almost three years (will be three years in June) so please ignore anything rusty from me. I also play Bridgit Thomas!

LOS ANGELES, CA, Nov. 16, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Foothills Exploration, Inc. (OTC: FTXP) ("Foothills" or the "Company"), an oil and gas exploration and development company focused on delivering the energy needs of today and tomorrow is pleased to announce a corporate update.
Wind River Basin Project
The Company has acquired an additional 2,500 acres in the Wind River Prospect, bringing the total project area up to approximately 18,887 acres.
After receiving encouraging results for Phase 1 of its soil geochemical survey on a portion of the Company’s acreage in the Beaver Creek East (“BCE”) project in Fremont County, Wyoming, Phase 2 has commenced and will further analyze 95 of the 194 soil samples collected using the Synchronous Scanned Fluorescence (“SSF”) method to reveal crude oil concentrations down to one part per million and the composition of leaking hydrocarbon source (i.e., condensate vs. high gravity vs. low gravity oil). Phase 2 should be completed within the next 7-10 business days.
Licensed preliminary 2D seismic interpretation on the BCE project has confirmed the “Sand Draw Anticline” nose believed to exist on project from well data, mapping, references and published Wyoming Geological Survey cross-section. The promising structural features expected are clearly identified and bounding east and west by locally mapped faults, which help confirm the proposed initial Unit development well pad surveying and proposed Unit outlined “resource play.” Deeper pay structures have been identified and are being examined by the Company’s technical team.
The Company will look to increase its acreage position in the project area based on its most recent analysis and geological model.
Illinois Operations
Work-over operations on the Sears-Houser #4 well have commenced with the objective of producing from the Aux Vases Sand (2,719-2,730) formation. The Company is scheduled to close on its recently announced acquisition of 20 oil wells and 4 Class II salt water disposal injection wells in the Illinois basin by the end of November. The agreement between the parties has an effective date of October 1, 2021. The plan is to begin a field wide optimization program once the transaction closes.
Husky Prospect
The Company leased 640 acres in the Hallville field and is currently developing a shallow drilling project. The development prospect is located in Sweetwater, Wyoming, and is currently undergoing a thorough geological analysis.
Drone Joint Venturewith Perspectum Drone Inspection Services Ltd.
The project has been financed and the name of the joint venture is HHE Exploration Technologies, Ltd., a corporation duly organized in the Province of Alberta, Canada. The joint venture seeks to develop and commercialize a drone-based hydrogen and helium detection technology and other intellectual property to provide services to those who explore for natural hydrogen and helium. The delivery of its first full function drone is expected in December 2021. This technology is a pivotal part of the Foothills hydrogen exploration program targeting identified areas of interest in North and South America. Natural hydrogen exploration has the potential to deliver the most inexpensive, reliable carbon-free hydrogen to power the hydrogen economy.
The field of natural (or “white”) hydrogen exploration has recently emerged on the international stage as a potentially viable alternative production method with costs projected to be significantly lower than steam methane reforming (“grey hydrogen”) and electrolysis using renewable energy (“green hydrogen”). Natural hydrogen is clean and carbon-free with production costs estimated to be about $0.75 per kilogram, which is about 1/8th the current cost of producing green hydrogen.
