Miles’ Clone Saga is different than Peter’s

When Marvel announced Miles having a Clone Saga, it was met with a mix of derision and uncertainty because the Clone Saga is one of the worst Spider-Man story arcs in the comic’s history. And Spider-Man has a lot of shitty stories so that’s bad folks. But the idea that this is going to be a one to one retelling or rehash of Peter’s arc fundamentally is a complaint of someone who has never read Miles Morales.

1. This story was thought out over two years ago

Back in Miles Morales: Spider-Man #8, Miles was kidnapped.

This is the Assessor. He is one of the most unsettling New Spider-Man villains I’ve seen in that he does what his name entails, he assesses. Why? We didn’t know why he was essentially torturing Miles. And yes, it was torture.

#8 is probably one of the most brutal Spider-Man stories and one of Miles best issues in that it fundamentally, from the art style in the panel sizes to the story, gives weight to this hopelessness and unsettling feeling as if you were watching an Abu Graib torture session. Throughout MM:SM, Miles thought blurbs were represented in writings in his journal. As in, they were not on the spot thoughts of a hero in action that typically occupy Spider-Man but someone who was thinking about what they did ahead of the present. So this took away any peril for the hero because the blurbs indicated that the hero was going to be okay. In MM:SM #8, you don’t know if Miles survives this because they are gone. Not to mention, the panel size is all squares or rectangles which is a far cry from Garron’s more fluid style in his panel making replacing the white borders with a cold and distilled black. #8 wasn’t Miles story anymore. It was the Assessor’s and he spent it torturing Miles.

There is no moment of triumph for the hero as he is rescued by his parents and Uncle as he is pleading and crying to his mother. And the Assessor gets away with it. No one knows why he tortured Miles and what was his goal. In fact, Miles understandably too terrified to even attempt to figure out what happened to him which gives credence to his character flaw: he hesitates and abstains from doing the hard thing until the last minute to do something and by the time he does, the problem grows into a crisis. He is timid. That’s his flaw. So allowing the Assessor to get away with what he did out if fear leads to this.

Miles meets his first clone attacking him at his home.

There is a huge scuffle and Miles had to fight for his life. He loses and he finds himself in a familiar situation.

The Assessor captured Miles again. But this time we get some explanation...ten issues after he captured him the first time. The Assessor is part of this criminal organization that creates burner clones in which they cellularly breakdown after an allotted time. He provides services to clientele who pay for services to use and buy Spider-Man clones as quick and powerful super thugs. Miles was targeted because...well he is Spider-Man.

2. The Assessor is not the Jackal

I hate the Jackal. Arguably the worst villain ever. There are fun villains. There are intimidating villains. Then there are outright creepy as fuck villains that serve no purpose by live out the author’s fetishistic fantasies and the last one fits the Jackal to a tee. The Jackal pervasion of Peter’s life is one of the most unnecessary and annoying things. He is a low rent Green Goblin.

The Assessor is nowhere as obsessive and creepily patriarchal as the Jackal. The Assessor is clinical and his uneasiness is to weaponize clones of an unassuming black teen who hates fighting. Due to being burner clones, I doubt we will have a Ben Reilly or Kaine Parker situation where Clones will seek autonomy or there is confusion on which Peter is the real Peter.

In other words, Miles’ Clone Saga isn’t about identity but the assessibility that people have on your identity. Miles has to watch representations of himself commit violent crimes and deteriorate over and over again.

What Mashima Could Have Done To Improve Nalu (And What He Should Do With Nalu Now)

What could Mashima have done to make Nalu work for someone like me? 

Wait, this isn't the rewrite...

I've wanted to make this post for a while. More accurately, I've wanted to make a post about this topic for years. Recently, I've gone through several different drafts of this post with drastically different types of approaches to this topic. However, I feel like this is the right direction to go about this topic.

Obviously, the vast majority of fans like this ship already and are counting the proverbial days until it becomes canon. But I know I'm not the only one who thinks the ship could have made more sense. And, it doesn't seem like Mashima isn't against playing around with the idea of this ship. (I'm not talking about specific spoilers here.)

So, I've decided to point out a few different ways Mashima could have worked Nalu into a better sense of becoming canon through the course of the original series. These are based on what I've heard regarding Nalu on both sides. Near the end, I'll include my suggestion for the best possible route Mashima could take regarding Nalu, especially at this point in the sequel.

Change #1: Natsu Leaving at Chapter 416

Let's get this one out of the way now. The big thing that turned me off to Nalu is how Natsu left at the end of the Tartarus arc, and I know I'm not alone in this. There are two camps of logic about why this is bad. Most people are in the Lucy camp which focuses on Lucy's broken bond with her friend. I'm more in the Natsu camp and focus on how his leaving betrays his ultimate goal of protecting his friends. Either way, Mashima didn't do much to make people who didn't already love the ship like it.

I don't think the argument should be made that Natsu shouldn't have left. He needed to leave to get stronger and if the guild was going to break up, their splitting up was inevitable. There are ways that Mashima could have handled Natsu leaving Lucy that aren't "write her a letter and leave". Given their relationship, he absolutely should have told her to her face that he had to leave and why. That's just a matter of being a good friend.

That's another reason I feel like it's important to start here. Mashima could work to further their relationship from a friendship to a romantic one. However, if their friendship is strained, there's no reason to start that in the first place. With that out of the way, let's talk about how Mashima could have made their relationship more romantic.

Change #2: Clearly Change their View of Each Other

It's not as if Natsu and Lucy's views of each other were consistently positive. It's weird to see that Natsu was dismissive and kind of exploitative was of Lucy early on in Fairy Tail. Of course, this changes throughout the series. Natsu and Lucy come to have a really cool friendship and one of my favorite partnerships in anime and manga.

However, there's no moment where Natsu or Lucy comes to a definite "Oh, I love them" realization. While the other ships in the Big 4 have at least one moment you can point to where the perception of a character towards the other noticeably changed, Nalu doesn't have that. The idea that they could be a couple is brought up every now and then. However, it's always treated as a joke and dismissed almost as quickly as it's brought up. If Mashima were to take Nalu seriously, this kind of moment would be crucial to their progression from great friendship to definite romance.

It's not even as if this couldn't happen. I've seen Nalu fans point to a few different places as possible moments for this to happen. However, my personal favorite moments happen during the Tenrou Island arc. At the beginning of the arc, Lucy looks at Natsu as he's sleeping and mentions how cute he looks. Later on, Natsu sees Lucy struggle against Kain and hears her say "It's more fun when we're together". I think both moments could have been reworked to start them on the trend of starting a romantic relationship with each other.

Change #3: Define Natsu and Lisanna's Relationship As Platonic

Depending on who you ask, we already got this during Tenrou Island. After all, Lisanna told Lucy to take care of Natsu before they went to fight Hades. A lot of people see this as the sign that Lisanna gave up on being with Natsu romantically. (If you can't tell, I'm restraining myself from arguing against this.) Mashima could have made this purpose of the moment more obvious.

Regardless, we didn't get a similar moment where Natsu and Lisanna realize their relationship has changed since Edolas and can't currently be romantic. All we got is a moment that might indicate that Lisanna thinks Lucy is a better romantic fit for Natsu. As someone who's been advocating for more of Lisanna, this change could lead to some interesting moments. Lisanna doesn't have problems with either Natsu or Lucy that would result in any ill will between them. I don't think that should change regardless of how feelings are written regarding Lisanna and the duo.

Change #4: Give Us A Real Confession

I've said this plenty of times already. We did not get a confession from Natsu at the end of Fairy Tail. The fact that people are arguing that a straight-up confession would be "out of character" for Natsu and Lucy is proof enough of that. If Nalu was meant to be, this would be an obvious inclusion.

Opinions are all over the place regarding how that ought to play out. Should Natsu confess first or should Lucy? Will their confession be more composed or frenetic? That's not so much of my concern. What matters most is that a confession actually happens for the reader to see.

Honestly, it's a shame that so many different romantic ships can get away with happening without seeing definite romantic confessions, especially in battle action shonen series. I've gone through 11 years of nonsense with these characters. If they end up a couple, I want to see the confession, at the very least.

And those are my suggestions for changes.

You'll notice that I haven't talked about romantic progression in this post. That should be obvious when talking about this kind of thing. I think it's hard not to write characters falling in love if you know you're building to a couple being romantic. Fans are more likely to see it in places it isn't happening. Mashima has proven himself capable of writing good romance time and again in both of his big running series. Of course, we're waiting to see if he'll do it again with Edens Zero.

Though, these are changes that would have to take place regarding the original series. If Mashima wanted to do any of these things, it would be too late to properly do them. With that in mind, here's what I think is the best thing Mashima could do with Nalu, especially at this particular time in the sequel.

Destroy Its Chances.

No, seriously.

To be clear, I'm not advocating for Mashima to give us less ship tease fakeouts or meaningless rejections. I'm not asking that he simply not make Nalu canon. I seriously wish that Mashima would make explicitly clear that Natsu and Lucy cannot and will not ever enter a romantic relationship with each other. I simultaneously wish he would stop playing with the idea that they may start one in stuff outside of canon, like Twitter sketches, omakes, and spin-offs.

I've had a lot of time to sit with Nalu as a possible ship. I've thought over and over about what's wrong with it. And I can't think of anything fundamentally wrong with Nalu. The worst thing about it is the nonexistent progression from friends to lovers and Natsu leaving in chapter 416. I'd add fanservice, but pretty much every Fairy Tail ship has egregious fan service moments.

When people talk about Nalu not being a good ship, there are worse things they could be talking about. They could talk about how one person is clearly pushing for a relationship the other isn't interested in. They could talk about how their relationship started off with one brutalizing the other. They could talk about how Nalu is incestuous or pedophilic. However, when we talk about the ships in Fairy Tail, these topics don't come up regarding Nalu.

Like, people don't like Gruvia because of the dynamic between them. For people to like that ship, you'd basically have to rewrite their dynamic entirely. I know someone who would only make Gruvia canon in its current state if it were an abusive relationship. My suggestions for Nalu don't even change that much about their relationship.

The real issues I have with the ship stem from the fandom itself. The Nalu fandom considers any and all moments that involve Natsu and Lucy as a sign that they can become a couple soon. This ranges from "understandable arguments regarding certain scenes in canon" to "irrational interpretations regarding Twitter sketches". All of it's treated with the same cavalier attitude of Nalu's impending canonization. This is all despite no confession, no indication of romance on either side, and an omake literally made to dissuade people from this idea.

I can't say that Mashima will never make Nalu canon. But if he plans not to make it canon, I want it to be clear that Nalu is never going to be a thing. Leave no sense of ambiguity for readers to argue that it might happen in the future after the series ends. When I read the last chapter of the sequel, I want Nalu's prospects to end with the series.

"But what about the fans who spent years following the series hoping for the ship to happen?"

What about them?

I'm not saying this as someone who has no interest in the ship or empathy for its fans. I could and probably should, especially given the stuff I've seen happen over the years. But I'm not. (People can just as easily point to any of the various extreme Nalu haters like... a certain someone.) No, I have no patience for this view considering another perspective I hold.

I came into the fandom enjoying Fairy Tail. I started this blog because I wanted to talk about the things I liked about it and places I disagreed with fans about it. As time passed, I started to like the series less and see more issues with it. Many of the things I came to like about the series started to annoy me more and talking about this series became more of a chore than anything else.

However, I came to have a renewed sense of love for the series as I revisited it. I found new things to like about it and reconfirmed my enjoyment of the things that previously annoyed me. Consider the ship I talk the most about positively on this blog is likely not going to be canon officially. I'm still here and I still love the series.

I find it hard to believe that fans can come this far into the series only because they want to see their ship happen. I get that this sentiment is popular to hear fans say. However, I can't believe that all those people are so deeply invested in Nalu being canon, as opposed to other aspects of the series, that the series would be ruined for them if it didn't happen.

This is a series that's almost a decade and a half old. We've had more spin-offs, omakes, and tie-ins than series many times more popular than Fairy Tail have received. We just got an anime game that actually isn't just another arena fighter and a sequel has been greenlit. There has to be SOMETHING that these people can come back to and appreciate about this series OTHER than Nalu.

And if there really is nothing they can come to like about this series than Nalu? If they really come to hate the series over their ship not happening? If we really see a fan meltdown over the ship not happening, then...

Good riddance to them!

I know plenty of fans who bowed out of the series after realizing the series wasn't great. I'm still following a few of them for other stuff. Almost every one of them came to the conclusion long ago that the series wasn't as great as they'd like it to be and moved onto other things that interested them. They handled it calmly and left the fandom without a ton of drama. A couple of them even drop in to make new fan content every now and then.

I can respect a perspective that acknowledges a series isn’t doing what you want it to do and decides to engage with only the elements that matter most to an individual. I can respect a similar perspective that decides to cut ties with a series or fandom over how canon plays out. I can’t respect or sympathize with a perspective that says canon is worse because one’s wishes for it weren’t fulfilled.

I'm not even saying that it's wrong to not like how Mashima handles a ship. I still don't like how Graytear played out. You're allowed to feel that Mashima's handling of any part of a series isn't great. However, I don't think the series is worse for what it did to Graytear. Fairy Tail wouldn't be worse if Nalu didn't happen.

I'd argue it would be better, but that's enough for now...

Absolute Carnage: Scream #1 and Absolute Carnage: Seperation Anxiety #1 Thoughts

I’m not going to do full breakdowns of these issues or any of the tie-ins to Absolute Carnage with the exception of ASM and the possible exceptions of Venom and anything Ben Reilly/Kaine might crop up in, depending upon what does down in those stories. 

These two minis were a big part of what got me hyped for Absolute Carnage. Is it because I love these characters?

LOL...no.

My investment in Scream ends with the nostalgia I have for the Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man theme park ride. 

Beyond that I’ve advocated that these characters be somehow mitigated as they were a huge part of watering down the symbiote brand in the 1990s. Sans Scream none of the characters stand out or have individual personalities or hooks, hence they are so often just lumped in together, this happening quite literally in the 1990s when all four of them merged into a single symbiote called Hybrid.

However, the sheer bravery and audacity of Marvel to decide that they were going to use these characters, give them their own mini-series and make them briefly relevant again in 2019  was so surprising to me I give them major kudos. Much as I give Absolute Carnage in general kudos for having the bravery to in this day and age make a mega crossover event out of a homage to one of the most notoriously bad Spider-Man stories ever, Maximum Carnage.

However to my surprise, the issues offered more than audacity.

They weren’t reinventing the wheel, nor were they particularly deep at all, but the remit for these series, and this event as awhole, seems to be to just have fun with the mess that is symbiote history and pay homage to it.

I mean if you want background reading for these series or Absolute Carnage as a whole it boils down to EVERY symbiote story ever. That’s how all encompassing it is!

The Scream issue started off with some decent dialogue incorporating her name and actually might’ve been reusing an abandoned idea from Spider-Man 3, by having the symbiote bonded to a skeleton (this was Eddie Brock’s fate in an older draft of Spider-Man 3 which made it’s way into the novelization). But more shockingly for me was the return of Patricia Robertson (no relation to Joe or Randy).

You might be scratching your head at the name I wouldn’t blame you. Patricia is a fairly deep cut  to symbiote lore.

See kids once upon a time the year was 2003. It was a time when Marvel were recovering from the 1990s and as far as the Spider-Man brand was concerned were trying to distance themselves from clones, Venom solo-books and having loads of symbiotes; but also trying to chase the newfound anime/manga crowd.

Enter often (and rightly) derided comic book writer Daniel Way. What did he do? Well he did a Venom ongoing  series about a clone of the Venom symbiote...drawn by someone trying to evoke manga by ripping off Humberto Ramos’ early 2000s  style...and failing at doing that...

Believe it or not this piece of crap ongoing series lasted 18 whole issues.

That series was also...sigh...the first American comic book series I ever collected.

Prior to that I’d only read reprints, but when an comic book shop opened up near where I lived and I saw Venom had his own comic I began picking it up, it was the first ever comic on my first ever pull list.

I wouldn’t say I LIKED the series, but there is nostalgia there for me. The fact that Patricia is showing up again, that continuity from this forgotten and derided series is relevant again (complete with pretty accurate renditions of the clone venom symbiote) and that Pat is the new Scream blows my mind!

Separation Anxiety ont he flipside was perhaps a stronger story. There was little in the way of continuity beyond fitting in with what happened last time we saw these symbiotes (which was IIRC in Carnage vs. Deadpool) but what the issue has going for it is it’s played as a straight horror comic. Horror seems to be a very effective new angle to approach the symbiote from in the 2010s and this series leans in on that. 

The spelled out but nevertheless clever twist on these symbiotes is that it embraces the name of the comic (which is the same as their most famous 1990s outting) as the central premise of the series. The main characters are a family of four, the parents of whom are in the midst of an ugly separation. The main focus is on the eldest child who laments her parents separating and breaking up their family, only for the story to be a case of ‘be careful what you wish for’ as her family is gruesomely and violently forced back together when they (and her) bond to the Life Foundation symbiotes who are under the control of Knull/Carnage.

There is a brilliantly bonkers scene where the family sits down for a stereotypical family dinner scene that’s given a dark humour twist.

The artwork is also very impressive with extremely creative layouts and panelling to convey the story. I’d post pages from it but I’d just be posting the whole comic.

If you vaguely have a fondness for symbiotes and monster/horror comics I’d highly recommend both titles actually.

Premiere Nebula Fun Facts!

I was planning on writing a character profile for Io tonight, but since I’m feeling a little under the weather, I’ll just give you a few Premiere Nebula fun facts about each character. So, here goes!

Valka: Probably my oldest character ever, to the point where she’s almost more of an imaginary friend than a disposable character. Underneath her serious and deeply traumatized mentor-like nature, she has quite the snarky side, and often exchanges quips with her adoptive sister, Io. She was an Ixi (goat-like species) when I first came up with her on Neopets, so sometimes I imagine AUs of her as a satyr or werewolf (since her backstory mirrors a werewolf myth). The nickname Io gives her, Valvi, originally made a ton more sense when she was on Neo, because she married a certain Neopets sports player character with “vi” in his last name, so it was like a J.Lo thing. Now it’s just a play off how many athletes have similar-sounding nicknames AKA I liked the name too much.

Omega: She was originally conceived as an emotionless girl type, which I later repurposed into Koto. The beginnings of her current personality were sparked by me rereading Harry Potter and wanting to create a nervous hero who later becomes strong, like Neville Longbottom. She kinda took the main character position from Valka after that. Outside of sports, she’s great with all sorts of art, especially painting and jewelry-making. Has light brown hair with rainbow tips, which a ton of people think are lame, but she finds them really cool.

Xue: Basically the magical girl mom friend taken to its logical conclusion AKA the sort who uses empathic powers to pester you into fessing up your issues. Annoying at times, but also a great leader who helps Valka out a lot. Loves vintage, lace, and all things cute, while still being the most educated of the group (she’d probably paint her therapy office in wall-to-wall pastels). High physical strength, fairly low magical strength.

Xing: Xue’s sister, who was captured by the Firebrands many years before the story’s beginning. Also likes vintage fashion, but is more into the ‘80s and ‘90s scene than her sister. Was a local singer in the Square before capture, who specialized in disco and rock music. My image of her is based off black disco queens like Donna Summer, and I just know she listened to her stuff a ton as a kid. (She also really likes Motown—she even modeled her hairstyle off Diana Ross.) Basically, someone who seems stuck in the past, but really wants to change the future. High magical strength, weak constitution, gets sick a ton.

Koto: Her race was pretty uncertain after I changed her from a Neopet to a person, but someone I really value and who really values my ideas is Filipina, so I made Koto of that descent to honor her. Clones have fascinated me since I was a child, and a science fiction book I read about them had a clone who could play the piano even though his counterpart couldn’t—so I decided to make Koto learn to play violin in secret. She seems like dumb muscle, but Star Corporations realized the importance of educating her, so she’s quite smart. I often have writing discussions with my boyfriend, and since she hasn’t come in the story much yet, he often calls her “Shego” (since both are mook types with green themes). Since Koto is usually a rule-following type who mostly rebels when her friends are in danger, I jokingly call these situations “Captain America moments.”

Stelle: My favorite character to write tends to switch between her and Valka. Her color scheme (green+silver+black) is probably my favorite. She often switches between a comedic mood and a more depressive mood, which is seriously making me consider giving her ADHD or bipolar. Due to her whole “dark past as a brainwashed assassin” thing, she has “Bucky Barnes moments” to match Koto. (I swear, I didn’t watch any of the Marvel movies until their characters were finalized! It’s just a coincidence, albeit one that might draw Stucky shippers to my story.) Has always been 100% gay in my imaginings of her (it took Koto a little longer).

Io: By far, the most fun character to write. The teen character who curses a ton and secretly has plenty of hidden depths. Will probably be an indie movie director when she grows up. She’s actually the Manufacturer’s daughter, which I love because hero/villain’s daughter relationships are typically romantic rather than sisterly (like her and Valka). Watches a ton of old movies, as well as movies from our era. Would probably love/relate to all the “troubled relationship with father” characters, and I can especially see her liking Gamora and Todoroki in a modern AU. (Despite my lack of father issues, I have similar tastes in that regard.)

Kaine: Originally just a villain to be killed, is now a Chaotic Neutral turned Chaotic Good character. A lot of this change was based on a Precure season in which a chara’s dark clone was killed, which made me realize I really didn’t want this to happen to Kaine. Was also originally a Yandere, but was changed to just a flirty character who falls in love easily (because I’m not huge on that trope anymore). One of the rare sniper-type Actresses I have planned. A 30-something adult who never got out of her goth phase, and whose magical girl form is pure Gothic Lolita. (Hers is one of my faves for this exact reason.)

Phea: The newest Nebula gal—I’ve only had her in my head for a year or so. Most of her concept was based on my love for model-themed magical girls and the (actually useful) celebrity activist trope. Since she has long ombre teal hair and is a plus-size model, the plus-size modeling community on Tumblr gave me a ton of inspiration for her looks. Only goes by her stage name—even I don’t know what her real name is yet! Her Actress name, Nymphea, happens to be both a flower (water lily) and a Pokémon (the Japanese name for Sylveon); the former was intended and the later was a happy accident. She was Valka’s old college roommate, and the two were quite close (Phea personally fantasizes about an “oh my god, they were roommates” scenario with Valka, but hasn’t confessed yet.) Loves photography and dogs—the bigger and fluffier the better! (The “Phea has a huge dog” headcanon is a joke born from the fact that many celebrities have tiny ones—Phea, on the other hand, would have a Saint Bernard and still give her a cutesy celebrity dog name like Rosetta.)

Governing in a post-truth multi-ethnic democracy....

On July 25, Sinchew Daily front-paged the news that next year’s Standard 4 syllabus contains six pages of introduction to what Jawi script is all about. With that, the DAP came to face its worst crisis since Pakatan came into power in May 2018, and no doubt one of its most serious crises in DAP’s 53-year history. What follows is a case of strong emotions being whipped up based on very few facts, mostly twisted ones. This is indeed a wake-up call. We are now governing in a challenging post-truth milieu, and yet with the obligation to the nation to hold together a multi-ethnic and multi-party coalition government. I want to express my unreserved gratitude to DAP grassroots leaders in Johor. It has been very hard on all of you. When the public is up in arms against the DAP, you have to face it first hand at coffee shops in your respective local community. It is not that we have not faced such moments before. In 2014, courtesy of Sinchew Daily and Utusan, DAP was accused on the one hand of being cowardly and for not standing up to PAS, then an ally in Pakatan Rakyat, when PAS and Umno tangoed on the question of hudud; and on the other hand, Utusan accused DAP of being antagonistic towards Islam. Then in 2016, again on an issue fanned by Sinchew Daily, DAP grassroots members suffered ridicule as DAP re-aligned with forces associated with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. At the same time, in the universe of Utusan readers, Dr Mahathir’s supporters faced ridicule for collaborating with DAP. During those crises, DAP Johor leaders at all levels stayed together and we went to each and every small town in Johor to speak at “Forum Kedai Kopi” to explain to our supporters the difficult choices we had to make. Ethnic firestorms created by the press and social media are very hard to deal with. But in the post-truth world, these perceptions are hardened as “truths” to the extent that political leaders at many levels are forced to adopt such positions or at least respond to them positively. In the process, the nation risks being torn apart. The fact is that the Pakatan government is a coalition government. No party has absolute power. Most things have still got to go back to Cabinet and Pakatan Harapan Presidential Council for endorsement, and that is how it should be.

This coalition government is certainly a very difficult one to manage. Dr Mahathir and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim were sworn opponents for two decades. Dr Mahathir and DAP were opponents for even longer. All of us in Pakatan have to be committed to keeping the coalition intact and keeping our multiethnic society safe and secure. We will have to do everything possible to reverse this “post-truth” situation: in which Dr Mahathir is branded as the worst enemy of the non-Malays and Lim Kit Siang the worst enemy of the Malays. I urge DAP members to be steadfast in keeping Pakatan intact. Talks of asking DAP to quit Pakatan at all costs is just going to destroy the fruits of democracy won on May 9, 2018 and to open the door for Umno and PAS to return to rule. Kenapa beban masalah kepada DAP?

DAP dilihat lebih tertekan atau diberi tekanan sebagai kerabat kerajaan berbanding dengan parti-parti komponen lain. Tengok sahaja kepada isu tulisan Jawi, DAP yang ditekan dan terpaksa memberi penjelasan. Satu mesyuarat khas dipanggil oleh parti itu berkaitan isu berkenaan. Orang Cina yang kurang senang dengan langkah untuk memperkenalkan Jawi di kalangan murid sekolah jenis kebangsaan meminta DAP memberi penjelasan. Bagi Cina yang tidak senang dengan apa sahaja langkah kerajaan, mereka akan tunding jari kepada DAP. Dan DAP mengambil peduli hal itu dengan memanggil pemimpin tertingginya bermesyuarat dan mengatasi pertikaian itu. Satu lagi isu yang juga terpaksa ditangani oleh DAP ialah isu Lynas atau nadir bumi di Kuantan Pahang. Masyarakat yang tidak setuju dengan projek itu telah menunding kepada DAP. Dan DAP sekali lagi akan memanggil pemimpin tertingginya untuk bermesyuarat membincang isu berkenaan.

Isu Lynas timbul kembali apabila Dr Mahathir memberi bayangan projek itu akan diteruskan apabila ada jaminan daripada syarikat pengendali untuk menyelesaikan sisa pepejalnya. Nampaknya DAP terpaksa memikul banyak masalah yang boleh memberi implikasi buruk kepada kerajaan. Isu tulisan Jawi dan juga isu Lynas ini. Walhal soal keselamatan alam sekitar bukan sahaja menjadi tanggungjawab DAP tetapi ia adalah tanggungjawa kolektif parti-parti komponen PH. Tetapi kenapa yang nampak serius dan ambil berat DAP? Apakah DAP concern masalah rakyat dan faham kalau isu-isu seperti khat Jawi itu tidak diselesaikan mereka akan kehilangan undi? Walhal kalau DAP hilang undi bukankah kesannya nanti kepada PH seluruhnya. Rasanya tidak adil untuk dibiarkan hanya DAP memikul beban dan ada kalanya ia menjadi biawak hidup dalam kerajaan. Misalnya isu tulisan Jawi, tidak ubah seperti biawak hidup kerana perkara itu tidak pun perlu disegerakan, tanpa memberi kefahaman mendalam. Reformasi atau tugas pertama yang dilaksanakan oleh Tun selaku Perdana Menteri ke 7 ialah mendapatkan Pengampunan Di Raja atau Royal Pardon dari Agong yang MEMBOLEHKAN Anwar Ibrahim bertanding dalam Pilihanraya Kecil Parlimen Port Dickson 18. Superior Spider-Man #17-19, 23, 27-32 and Superior Team-Up #5, #7 Thoughts...Sorta

Because of the 2099 event coming up I have ambitions (and lord knows if I will succeed) of re-reading the 2099 centric stories published in the 2010s, chiefly Peter David’s Spider-Man 2099 solo-books. I never actually finished reading that stuff nor did I finish writing posts for each issue/arc but I’m willing to try again.

It’s been so long though and now the stuff has been collected I thought it’d be best to not simply pick up where I left off but both refresh my memory and be more of a completionist about it.

Hence I decided to skim  the Superior issues featuring Miguel O’Hara and to a lesser extent Alchemax with a mind towards the scenes featuring both. This is both to save me time (no pun intended) and because you know...fuck Superior.

As such this is far from comprehensive and I’m likely missing information but for the sake of completion I’m making these posts.

So first of all I’m not going to overly critique the inherent concept of Superior, Otto’s characterization, or anyone else’s characterization (sans 2099 relevant characters); especially as they relate to the Superior concept. It’s shit. I’ve said that endlessly before. If you are chomping at the bit to hear specifics regarding these issues then all I shall say is Slott writes Otto as cartoonish with Saturday Morning style villain dialogue whilst Yost in Team-Up, just like virtually EVERY writer sans Slott to handle the character, did better.

NO ONE hearing Otto talk as Spider-Man should be fooled into thinking he’s the real Spider-Man because he doesn’t sound anything like he did before he changed his outfit, started using more violent methods, employed supervillains as part of his Superior Six, had 4 metal arms come out of his back and had a hold gang of henchmen at his beck and call. But in spite of that at least Yost’s dialogue was more nuanced. Whilst it sounds like something Otto would say it also sounds like the Peter Parker Spider-Man merely skewed. He’s more condescending, egotistical and bluntly insulting than Peter ever was but he also doesn’t sound like a middle aged man from a 1960s comic book.

This brings us to the dialogue in general in fact. As a fan of the MC2 universe and older comics I ENJOY older style dialogue...in MC2 stories or older comics. The MC2 universe was it’s own off to the side sandbox that was deliberately trying to evoke the Silver Age, but it could break from that when appropriate. And older comics were just written by the standards of the time. Slott though his dialogue was written if anything in a more antiquated style than what the MC2 usually went for. Seriously all he’d need is to throw in some old fashioned words and social attitudes and it’d be ripped from the 1960s.

In a mainstream, main universe set title the dialogue style should be reflective of the times, whilst obviously avoiding the bad stuff regarding modern dialogue. One of my frustrations with many modern comics is that characters will speak outloud because modern standards dictate that thought balloons for anyone who isn’t the lead character of the story are bad for some asinine reason. On that front I do give Slott credit as he avoids this. He has no problem giving any character he wants internal thoughts and even still makes the lead, Otto, stand out as he has thought captions not thought balloons like everyone else. It’s just literally the word choices he makes that’s the problem. It’s inorganic even by comic book standards and is overly exposition laden. This is where editorial boxes or the recap pages could help out by getting that exposition out of the way. But instead we need to explain a story from over 20 issues earlier twice across 2 issues or alternatively just take it on faith the reader remembers the stories.

It doesn’t help that he inconsistently will use the third person narrator once in a blue moon.

The dialogue also impacts upon the characterization because frankly Miguel and Tyler Stone are...off...

In fact a lot of the characters besides Otto feel rather bland and samey because they are just actors in the plot that is being told and nothing more. Miguel is distinct for little reason beyond his use of future slang. Now I’ve only read the first trade of Spider-Man 2099 so maybe some of these terms pop up later but if Slott invented ‘bithead’ and ‘jammit’ it’s cause for cringe. The larger issue though is that Miguel’s status quo is set up by Slott but not his you know...personality. Okay in fairness he gets across Miguel has a little bit more edge to him than the regular Spider-Man and is not as prone to the same kind of humour in battle. But the latter is likely less Slott getting the character and more him just writing him pretty generically. The sarcasm, the arrogance, the sardonic aspect of Miguel is totally absent.

This is a problem if you were a 2099 fan showing up to see your fav or if this was intended as set up for a spin-off which it absolutely was. I mean shouldn’t set up for a spin-off character give you an impression of their personality. Shouldn’t you want to follow the character as opposed to the admittedly interesting situation the character is in?

But that’s Slott all over. He’s awful on characters 99% of the time but he’s good on concepts 50% of the time. The initial 2099 arc is a great microcosm of this.

Miguel wants to avert Alchemax’s evil influence in the future but we are merely TOLD that it is evil but see little evidence to corroborate that. He is willing to destroy himself, his grandfather and his family lineage to do that but then he has a change of heart. The set up for that change of heart is briefly presented and we smash cut to after it has already happened, we see none of the internal gears turning to demonstrate his mind changing, not even a quick panel of his eyes narrowing or his brow furrowing.

O the flipside (again no pun intended) though I genuinely adore the idea that Liz Allan and Norman Osborn in effect founded Alchemax and the involvement of Tiberius Stone and the conundrum of Miguel needing to protect him. In fact Tiberius comes off as one of the more interesting characters in this. I liked how he deduced his own relevance to the future and was just a sleazy asshole.

Another thing compromising the introduction of Miguel is his presentation.

The arc is rather bewildering because it introduces functionally an alternate version of the original Spider-Man 2099 but also takes it on faith you already know about Spider-Man 2099 in the first place.

Which frankly wasn’t a reasonable presumption.

Like okay sure people know OF Spider-Man 2099 because if you are a comic book or Spider-Man fan long enough your pick up there was a future version of him sooner or later, it’s just plain osmosis. And he’d been featured in two video games in the then recent past.

But not everyone plays video games, watches Let’s Plays, or would have read comics from 20 years ago, especially considering the 2099 stories haven’t even been collected in trade yet. Hell the last time A version of Spidey 2099 appeared it was in 2009 and was a distinctly different version altogether.

So Miguel’s reintroduction should’ve been handled differently, the first shot of him in action should have been the Stegman splash page not him preparing to leap off into action, we should’ve seen his supervision in action instead of just being told about it, we should’ve had his other abilities demonstrated to us. I mean I  know what they are and how they work for the most part but how would someone who’s a new/unfamiliar fan have a clue?

Perhaps the worst example of this is the fact that Slott’s stories, both in the initial 2099 arc and later, reference Miguel and Peter meeting before. There is no further exposition, there is no editorial caption referring to when this occurred (in the initial arc anyway), you are just supposed to accept this has happened before. That is until Superior #32 but more on that in a moment.

But even for new readers this is bewildering. Newer fans might in their head’s wonder if this is referencing the Edge of Time or the Shattered Dimensions video games, which it definitely isn’t because those are clearly not canon to Peter Parker. Older fans like myself might immediately jump to the Spider-Man Meets Spider-Man 2099 one shot from the mid 1990s. But that’s never explicitly referred to until Superior #32 which was published not just after Superior wrapped up but in fact after Miguel’s solo-book had been launched!

More confusingly  IIRC the one shot factors into the original 2099 series so it shouldn’t apply to this alternate version of Miguel and indeed the marvel.wiki lists the one shot as featuring the original Miguel NOT the one starring in these stories. Much like Spider-Girl #10 Slott decided to canonize something he had no business canonizing.

Anyway one final little criticism I have of these stories in terms of writing is that Miguel helped create Spider Slayers using future technology (why would you fuck up the timeline like that??????) and he was able to deduce Otto wasn’t the true Spider-Man. How the fuck can a guy from the future who met Peter Parker ONCE and very briefly tell Superior Spidey is an imposter but Aunt May, Kaine and Mary Jane can’t?

Because contrivance thy name is Slott.

Let’s briefly discuss Superior Team up and Superior #32.

Miguel’s involvement is essentially meaningless in the former and he’s absent from the latter but credit where credit is due Slott did give us a fun little jaunt through the 2099 future...which is not the setting of Miguel O’Hara’s solo book so you know...that was kind of pointless beyond setting up Spider-Worst (not my joke but it’s appropriate). I have little else to say on the issue beyond that seeing more murdered Spider-Heroes sickens me.

Finally let’s talk art.

These books were drawn by Ryan Stegman (Superior #17-19), Marco Checchetto (Superior Team-Up), Humberto Ramos (Superior #23) and Giuseppe Camuncoli (Superior #27.NOW, #28-31).

Ramos is Ramos which is to say anatomically offensive though seeing him briefly draw Miguel wasn’t too bad. Camuncoli was better but I’ve never liked his style. True he got better but still not great.

Stegman meanwhile I think was good. Now this is 2013 Stegman. His RYV, Venom and Absolute Carnage work runs rings around his work back then and before that. It’s very stylized but it’s still good. In fact the stylized look of it works for the concept behind the series. Characters look darker, edgier, in a way uglier and somewhat caricatured which fits in a series about a villain. His double page spread for Miguel though looks awesome, one of the all time great images of the character.

Checchetto meanwhile was the stand out. His work just look gorgeous to look at but it was still evoking a darker aesthetic it fit the idea of a book about a villain very, very well.

Not much to say about these issues. I am debating if I’m going to make a similar multi-issue post when I skim through the Miguel parts of Spider-Verse since I never posted about them back when it was happening, but we will see.

So I recommend reading these?

No. No I do not. I recommend flipping to the pages of Miguel in costume and looking at the art but that’s it.

Spider-Geddon #2 Thoughts

Something of a clusterfuck

 There is the nugget of a fun story here. Seeing the Spider Heroes rally, recruit and use team work offers some opportunities for a fun action adventure yarn.

But this is blown by the innate blandness of the Inheritors (the most relatively interesting of which, Morlun, isn’t even present sans a quick cameo) and the blandness with which almost all the protagonists are written.

What do I mean by this?

I mean that pretty much every protagonist in this story has basically the same personality, the ONLY exceptions being

a)      Spider-Punk who’s rendered slightly more unique because he sides with Otto’s ‘kill them’ stance

b)      Octavia because she too sides with Otto’s stance and there seems to be a kinship between them. Which is more interesting in concept than it is actually explored in the story

c)       And...Otto

Fucking. Otto. Octavius.

Yeah so Superior Spider-Rapist is clearly not only Slott’s pet character but also Gage’s; makes sense I guess since Gage was Slott’s understudy writer.

Otto has by far the most personality and in spite of how much I hate Superior Spider-Douche I found myself more engaged by his character in this issue because of that. Not that I don’t find his pompousness, his villainy and his obnoxious catch phrase ‘the die is cast’ insufferable. It all just further makes you question why Peter let’s him run around.

What’s so fucked up about that is that this story exists to promote a movie about Miles and in which Miles was allegedly going to play a major role. But so far, much like Peter in Spider-Verse, he’s the Beta to Ock’s Alpha. He’s even used to establish a splinter group of non-murdery Spider-Heroes like Peter in Spider-Verse.

I feel like maybe the issue was trying to give a little more flair to Mayday because she’s rearing to fight the Inheritors in one or two lines of dialogue...but it’s just one or two lines. And I’m not even sure rearing to fight them because of her Dad’s death is all that in character for her after Spider-Verse and the Secret Wars Spider-Island story and Web Warriors issues she was in.*

I’m not saying Ock is the main character per se but he’s clearing the ‘first among the ensemble’ if you get me.

Equally getting more attention than most other characters is Spider-Gwen.

Yes apparently even though her solo book’s sales were in the toilet when this story was published (and still are) much like Web Warriors the story seems to insist on hyping her. Granted its less egregious than in Web Warriors and it does make a certain amount of sense. She has a symbiote thus her scoring some of the better hits in and fending off the Inheritors is more logical since she has a power advantage. But its just the fact it continues a pattern of hyping her up that’s a problem, not helped when she seemingly dies and the Spider-Heroes take a noticeable moment to mourn her, much moreso than Noir or UK ever got.

What’s so baffling about this story decision is that we know Gwen is definitely not dead because she’s too popular to die and the pretense doesn’t even last beyond the issue, the make it clear she’s alive on the last page. Alive and stranded which...didn’t this happen already in Web Warriors if memory serves?

 One more thing before I dive into the biggest issue with this story, Kaine and Otto interact in this story and their dynamic is soooooo unbelievable.

In keeping with the Spider-Heroes being written blandly and so similar to one another Kaine’s personality seems to be ‘a little more willing to kill’ than most everyone else. And this happens in a scene where Superior Spider-Man, whom Kaine KNOWS is Doctor Octopus last I checked, shows up to recruit him and he calls Ock ‘buddy’.

What. The. Fuck.

Surely if Ock had to recruit the guy who fucking killed him  and Kaine was being recruited by the guy who stole his brother’s body for a year (the brother he tried to protect by killing Otto in the first place) there’d be tensions. Instead it’s all civil.

Much like Spider-Verse this story seems to just piss away the potential drama you could milk from actually having these characters interact. I guess it’s at least consistent as a sequel then.

Now the single biggest problem with this issue though is how it relates to the tie-ins.

Between the dialogue and caption boxes it’s made clear to us that in this issue the Spider Heroes go off and recruit other Spider-Heroes.

This is just baffling because it means the events of Edge of Spider-Geddon #1-4 AND Spider-Geddon #0  actually happen during and after issue #2!

What kind of asinine planning is that? At that point it doesn’t even make sense to call those comics Edge of Spider-Geddon or Spider-Geddon #0.

They aren’t on the edge of the story they’re in the middle and issue #0 is actually issue #2.5. It’s not even like they were just released out of order Marvel GAVE us a reading order and it’s incorrect. It creates confusion even within Edge of Spider-Geddon issue #1 because THAT issue happens before Spider-Geddon but every issue after is during it?

What a mess, my God.

Oh and the issue also spoils stuff from Spec #312 as Miles is shown helping Peter fight off the Morlun. Great job there editorial

I’m soldiering through the main book so that now at least I can get to what I actually wanted to read, the tie-ins.

P.S. Mayday refers to Anya as Arana. The Marvel wiki still labels her as Spider-Girl, but could this be Marvel changing her name back? I hope so.

P.P.S. According to this issue a building blowing up should kill an Inheritor...what?

In older stories the Inheritors were shown to clearly be way more durable than that!

*Sidenote the art gets her costume wrong. It’s clearly red and black instead of navy blue and her chest symbol has ‘teeth’ on it which normally isn’t the case. Artistic licence I suppose and I like the look well enough but still the artists didn’t care to keep her on model apparently.
