Peek of Perfection: A Look Inside a Chic Ski House Renovation

Marisa Lafiosca’s clients were so pleased with the New Jersey home she designed for them that when they purchased a ski condo in Windham, NY, they asked the New Jersey-based interior designer if she would make the trip to transform the dated, four-level ski home into a fun, cozy, modern space for them to enjoy future family ski weekends and vacations in.
The space was dark and drab with wall-to-wall beige carpeting and red-orange flooring, cabinetry, and trim, so Lafiosca of ML Interior Designs, gutted the interior including all of the flooring, the existing kitchen, the master bathroom, and the boot room.  With family and friends visiting often, it was also important for the designer to maximize space.

Working with local contractor Hickory Hill Builders and cabinet maker Shawanga Ridge Woodworks, Lafiosca redesigned the kitchen layout by removing all cabinetry, soffits, the peninsula, and outdated appliances.  The upper cabinets were replaced with open shelving and shiplap was applied horizontally to work with the existing layout of the windows.  An island was added that works perfectly for an open concept and family gatherings, and a large dining table for gatherings sits opposite the new kitchen.  Lafiosca chose an antler chandelier painted in a high gloss black and black metal chairs for a rustic modern look.

For optimal seating in the living room off of the kitchen, Lafiosca added a large comfortable sectional with fun pillows and swivel chairs.  A game table completes the space for the children’s off-slope puzzle hobby.

Shiplap detail was continued in a new foyer entry with coat hooks, shelves and a bench to keep outerwear organized, and large brick porcelain tiles were installed for low maintenance flooring.
All of the trim and built-ins flanking the stone fireplace were painted a dark gray/black color for warmth, and grass cloths and other wallcoverings added texture.
The wall to wall carpeting and red-stained wood flooring was replaced with warm gray/brown toned wide plank flooring,  beautiful area rugs and staircase runners.  With open staircases, all four levels of the condo were unified and a big open space concept was created.

The lower level originally housed a built-in entertainment center, a makeshift boot room, and a guest bedroom and bath.  By removing the entertainment center Lafiosca was able to create ample space for a comfortable children’s TV room.  A sleeper sofa was added to accommodate additional guests.  The boot room was updated with lockers for each family member, a built-in bench and shelving for extra storage which created a very convenient ski-in ski-out!  Lafiosca smartly chose a fabulous looking indoor/outdoor carpeting for the TV room foreseeing children running in and out with boots on – a guarantee!

The family wished to create additional sleeping accommodations for the children’s cousins and friends and so a queen size bed in the girl’s room was removed and Lafiosca designed wall-to-wall bunk beds – two twins over two fulls.  The walls were wrapped with shiplap painted in a light gray high gloss, and reading sconces were added for each space.

A new master bedroom, sitting area, and master bath were created – continuing the same paint colors and design scheme adding warm gray finishes on furniture, and cream and brown fabrics to the mix including beautiful bedding and fur throws.  The stunning view of the mountain from the bedroom adds the perfect finishing touch!

The master bath was updated with a soaking tub, steam shower and wall to wall vanity using the porcelain tiles, river stones for shower flooring, and classic white subway tiles.

An empty space on 4th floor landing was transformed into a cozy reading nook under an existing skylight.  Lafiosca added wall sconces, a daybed, pillows and a warm throw – a great space to sneak off to for a quiet read!
