Tacos: A Taste of Tradition and Innovation
Tumblr media
Let’s be honest—who doesn’t love a good taco? Whether it’s Tacos Tuesday or just a random craving, tacos have a way of bringing people together. They’re the ultimate handheld food, perfect for a quick bite or a full-on feast. But what exactly makes tacos so special? Is it the endless variety of fillings, the perfect blend of textures, or simply the fact that you can eat them with your hands?
In this article, we’ll explore the rich history of tacos, the diversity of taco styles, and why they’ve become a staple in American cuisine.
The History of Tacos
From Humble Beginnings to Global Fame
Tacos have a long and storied history that dates back centuries. Originating in Mexico, they were originally a simple meal for working-class people. The first tacos were likely made with corn tortillas and filled with whatever was available—usually something hearty and flavorful like beans, meat, or chiles.
As the dish evolved, so did its popularity. By the time tacos made their way to the United States, they had already become a beloved staple of Mexican cuisine. Today, tacos are enjoyed around the world, with countless variations and interpretations that cater to every taste.
The Influence of Mexican Culture
Mexican culture is at the heart of every taco. From the traditional street vendors in Mexico City to the high-end taco joints in Los Angeles, the taco’s roots are always evident. The simplicity of the taco allows for creativity while still honoring its origins—a balance that has helped tacos maintain their cultural significance even as they’ve spread globally.
Types of Tacos
The Classic Street Taco
When you think of tacos, the classic street taco probably comes to mind. These are small, soft corn tortillas filled with savory meats like carne asada, al pastor, or barbacoa. They’re usually topped with a simple combination of onions, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime. The beauty of the street taco lies in its simplicity—it’s all about the quality of the ingredients and the balance of flavors.
The Hard Shell Taco
While traditionalists might argue that a taco should always be soft, the hard shell taco has become an icon in its own right, especially in the United States. Introduced by fast-food chains like Taco Bell, the hard shell taco is made with a crispy, fried corn tortilla that’s filled with ground beef, lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes. It’s a crunchy, satisfying take on the classic taco, and it has earned its place in the taco pantheon.
The Fusion Taco
In recent years, fusion tacos have taken the food scene by storm. These are tacos that blend different culinary traditions to create something entirely new. Think Korean BBQ tacos, where tender bulgogi beef is paired with kimchi and sriracha mayo, all wrapped up in a soft tortilla. Or seafood tacos, where fresh fish or shrimp is paired with tropical salsas and creamy avocado. Fusion tacos are all about pushing the boundaries and experimenting with flavors, and they’ve become a favorite among foodies.
The Breakfast Taco
Why should tacos be limited to lunch and dinner? The breakfast taco is a delicious way to start your day. Typically made with scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, cheese, and maybe some potatoes or beans, breakfast tacos are hearty, filling, and incredibly satisfying. They’re especially popular in Texas, where they’ve become a morning staple.
How to Make the Perfect Taco at Home
Ingredients You’ll Need
Making tacos at home is easier than you might think. Here’s what you’ll need for a basic taco night:
Tortillas: Corn or flour, depending on your preference.
Protein: Choose from beef, chicken, pork, fish, or a plant-based option like beans or tofu.
Toppings: Shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, onions, cilantro, cheese, sour cream, and avocado are all great choices.
Salsa: Whether you prefer mild, medium, or hot, salsa is a must.
Lime Wedges: For that final burst of flavor.
Step-by-Step Preparation
Cook Your Protein: Season your meat or plant-based protein with your favorite spices, then cook it until it’s tender and flavorful.
Warm the Tortillas: Heat your tortillas in a dry skillet or wrap them in foil and warm them in the oven.
Assemble the Tacos: Start with a tortilla, add your protein, and then pile on the toppings. Don’t forget a squeeze of lime!
Enjoy! Tacos are best enjoyed fresh, so dig in while they’re hot.
Why Tacos Are So Popular
Versatility and Customization
One of the reasons tacos are so popular is their versatility. You can fill them with just about anything, making them suitable for any meal, diet, or occasion. Whether you’re feeding picky eaters, catering to vegetarians, or just looking for something quick and tasty, tacos have you covered. Plus, they’re customizable, so everyone can build their perfect taco.
A Social Food
Tacos are also inherently social. They’re easy to share, and taco nights are a great way to bring people together. Whether you’re hosting a casual get-together or celebrating a special occasion, tacos are always a crowd-pleaser.
A Perfect Balance of Flavors and Textures
At their best, tacos offer a perfect balance of flavors and textures. The combination of savory fillings, fresh toppings, and a warm tortilla is satisfying in a way that few other foods can match. Whether you’re biting into a soft, chewy tortilla or a crispy, crunchy shell, each bite is a delightful experience.
youtube
Conclusion
Tacos are more than just food—they’re an experience. From their rich history to their modern-day popularity, tacos have earned their place in the hearts (and stomachs) of people around the world. Whether you prefer the traditional street taco, the all-American hard shell, or a creative fusion twist, there’s a taco out there for everyone.
So, the next time you’re looking for something delicious, versatile, and satisfying, why not reach for a taco? With so many options to choose from, you’re sure to find a favorite that you’ll come back to time and time again.

Learn the routes of the city's buses, subways, and commuter trains so that you can get around effectively. You may jump on and off of several kinds of transportation at your convenience using city cards or passes. Respectful interactions with locals improve your vacation and help you develop a strong bond with the area.
5. Discovering Places Outside of Tourist Hotspots: Although famous sites are a must-see, don't stick to the tourist traps. Explore the neighbourhoods to get a true sense of the city. Talk to people, go to the local markets, and check out the parks where the locals congregate. This gives you a more sophisticated perspective of the city's culture and makes it possible for you to find undiscovered treasures that the guidebooks might not mention.
6. Weather-appropriate clothing: American cities have wildly different climates. Make sure you pack for the weather at your location by checking the forecast. Layers let you adapt to fluctuations in temperature throughout the day, so they're usually an excellent choice. It is important to wear comfortable shoes, particularly if you intend to explore the city on foot. If you want to stay hydrated, especially in warmer locations, think about bringing a reusable water bottle.
7. Maintaining Safety and Vigilance: Although big cities provide amazing experiences, it's important to maintain vigilance and put safety first. Pay attention to your possessions, particularly in busy places. Investigate safe neighbourhoods; stay away from strange places late at night. Get to know the emergency phone numbers and the fundamentals of the nearby medical institutions. If something doesn't seem right, follow your gut and get help.
Exploring the enormous landscapes and dynamic cultures of the biggest American cities is an experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression. When your urban trip comes to an end, consider the variety of experiences you had, from seeing famous sites to finding hidden treasures in nearby districts. Los Angeles, which is known worldwide for its glitz, glamour, and events with famous people, is a great place to celebrate all kinds of events. The City of Angels is no different when it comes to baby showers. They are times filled with joy, energy, and eagerness. In the world of Baby Shower Halls, there are venues, and then there are extraordinary experiences.  As we learn more about the culture of baby showers in LA, it’s clear that the right location can make all the difference and today we’ll talk about some of the more important things to keep into account for your upcoming baby shower.
Decoding LA’s Baby Shower Trends, Themes and Decor
Every year, baby showers in LA follow a different style. There are a lot of different options, from floral themes with lush green backgrounds to Boho Chic with Macrame Hangings. Showers with vintage decorations, soft colors, and lace details have also made a comeback. This diversity reflects in the baby shower menus too.  People love fusion foods, which take the best parts of different kinds of food and mix them together. Think about tiny taco pizzas or chicken sliders with Teriyaki sauce. When making the menu, we believe that it’s important to take into account people’s food preferences and restrictions. At Sepan, our food services are known for being flexible and high-quality, making sure that everyone can enjoy a gourmet meal.
Choosing The Right Games And Activities For A Crowd In Los Angeles.
Even though standard baby shower games like “guess the baby food” and “diaper raffle” have been around for a long time and are considered Blassics, sometimes the LA crowd often wants something a little different. Personalized trivia about the parents-to-be, baby karaoke, and even craft stations where guests can make keepsakes for the baby are becoming more common. The goal? Making memories that will last, not just for the parents but for all of the guests as well. Chicano Eats by Esteban Castillo
Esteban Castillo grew up in Santa Ana, California, where more than three-quarters of the population is Latino. Because Mexican food was the foundation of his childhood, he was surprised to see recipes for dishes on popular food blogs that were anything but the traditional meals he grew up eating. He was inspired to create the blog, Chicano Eats, to showcase his love for design, cooking, and culture and provide a space for authentic Latino voices, recipes, and stories to be heard.
Building on his blog, Chicano Eats is a bicultural and bilingual cookbook that includes 85 traditional and fusion Mexican recipes as gorgeous to look at as they are sublime to eat. Chicano cuisine is Mexican food made by Chicanos (Mexican Americans) that has been shaped by the communities in the U.S. where they grew up. It is Mexican food that bisects borders and uses a group of traditional ingredients - chilies, beans, tortillas, corn, and tomatillos - and techniques while boldly incorporating many exciting new twists, local ingredients, and influences from other cultures and regions in the United States.

Muy Bueno by Yvette Marquez-Sharpnack
Siéntate a comer, esta muy bueno! {Sit down and eat, it’s very good!} This was how Jesusita Mendias-Soza always welcomed guests to her table. The same words served as inspiration for her daughter Evangelina and granddaughters Yvette and Veronica, who wanted to honor her memory and preserve their family's recipes and stories for future generations. They started the Muy Bueno Cookbook blog in 2010 with this idea in mind, and quickly attracted thousands of fans and followers who fell in love with Muy Bueno's flavorful Mexican recipes, heartwarming family stories, and beautiful photography. Now they open their hearts and kitchens to an even wider audience in their first cookbook. Spanning three generations, Muy Bueno offers over 100 recipes: traditional old-world northern Mexican recipes from Jesusita’s kitchen; comforting south of the border home-style dishes from Evangelina; and innovative Latin fusion recipes from Yvette and Veronica. Also includes a chile glossary with photos, step-by-step instructions for roasting chiles, making tamales, and red chile sauce.

How to Explore LA During COVID
I’ve lived in Los Angeles for over two years now, but I still feel like a tourist. I had big plans for returning to campus this year -- museums I was going to visit, concerts I wanted to go to, restaurants I planned to try. Of course, Covid-19 threw a pretty major wrench in all of these plans. My roommate and I had to adapt, and we managed to find a number of fun, socially distanced things to explore in LA.
The first thing we learned is that food trucks are your best friends. Many of the food trucks around USC have stayed open through the pandemic, and they have some of the best food I’ve tried so far in the city for super reasonable prices. One of my new favorites is Taco Zone, a food truck near the Autozone on South Vermont that sells tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. They cook all of their food on a stove right in front of you, and everything on their menu is in the range of $1-5 (cash only). My all time favorite food truck, though, is still Mariscos Jalisco. This truck sells absolutely the best shrimp tacos I have ever had, for only $1.50 each. They’ve been reviewed and recommended by famous LA food critic Jonathan Gold, so you know they have to be good. The Kogi food truck is also a classic, serving Korean-Mexican fusion food (although more expensive than the other options).
We also recently discovered Zipcar, a service that allows you to rent cars by the hour as long as you are over 18, unlike most car rentals. We’ve used it to go to the Griffith Observatory (the outdoor part is still open), drive up Mulholland Drive, visit the Hollywood walk of fame, and to explore some of the beaches near campus. Our favorite covid-safe trip so far has been one to the Arts District, a neighborhood right outside of DTLA that has a bunch of outdoor art installations (mainly graffiti art). The great thing about living in LA is that the weather is always good enough to do things outside, which means that even during Covid there is no shortage of safe places to visit and activities to partake in.

Los Angeles has more than its fair share of authentic Mexican tacos, but it’s also have the richest selection of fusion tacos with flavors from around the world. Whether you like your tortilla made with flour or corn and stuffed with Korean bulgogi, North African pozole tagine or Mediterranean kebabs with tzatziki, you’ll find amazing taste sensations to discover.

Mondo Taco
•••
Mondo Taco translates as Taco World, and they aim to provide as many world flavors as possible wrapped in their handmade corn tortillas. (For the gluten-intolerant out there, note that they use a little flour in their regular corn tortillas, but they have gluten free and paleo options available on request.). Offerings range from El Greco, with lamb, tzatziki and diced tomato and the Amore with grilled chicken breast, bruschetta and pesto sauce to Tokyo Shrimp, Bayou Fish, Taj Majal coconut shrimp, Thailicious chicken with chipotle peanut sauce or the Yo Adrian ribeye with provolone. All variations are also available in a wrap or a bowl. Sides include cabbage, horseradish slaw, and hot or cold quinoa in addition to the more traditional chips and salsa and guacamole. As a bonus, they have a nice patio and serve beer, wine, and margaritas.

Kogi Korean Tacos
•••
Roy Choi’s original Korean-Mexican Kogi BBQ truck is still an LA favorite with four trucks on the road, but his signature specialties are now also available at the Alibi Room near Culver City and the Kogi Taqueria in Palms. Tacos have corn tortillas, slaw, cilantro, onions, salsa roja and a choice of short rib, bbq chicken, spicy pork or tofu. Korean-themed mulitas, quesadillas and burritos are also on the menu as well as a selection of bowls and sliders.

Komodo
•••
The Komodo franchise was created by Indonesian-born, East LA-raised, Cordon Bleu-trained chef, Erwin Tjahyadi. The Asian-Mexican fusion street food with a little French technique thrown in started in a truck, but is now available at two brick and mortar locations in Pico-Roberson and Venice. The truck is only brought out for catering events these days. The four taco Killer Combo gives you a chance to try four different fusion tacos from Singaporean-style shrimp or Indonesian-style pork rendang braised in coconut milk to Hawaiian seared Angus ground beef patty with pineapple teriyaki sauce, white rice and sunny-side up egg; Deep fried fish and grapes; or chicken with marinated oranges, among others. Salads and dinner plates are also available.

Revolutionario
•••
When you read this, North-African-influenced Revolutionario may or may not have a physical location, since their original Exposition Park location was sold out from under them, but if they don’t currently have a fixed location, keep a look out for the Revolutionario on Wheels food truck. Corn tortillas can be topped with duck hash; pozole tagine with lamb, beef, chicken, hominy and vegetables; smoked lamb; black-eyed pea falafel and more. Burritos, quesadillas and bowls are also available. Follow @ChefZadi on twitter to keep up with what’s going on.

Kaya Street Kitchen
Kaya Street Kitchen is frequently referred to as a Southeast Asian inspired Chipotle because you choose your platform of non-GMO flour roti taco, whole wheat burrito, rice or noodle bowl, or salad, then choose your protein, then your veggie toppings and sauces. Proteins include grilled chicken satay, shrimp and pork meatballs, coconut lemongrass beef, or tofu.

TLT Food
•••
TLT Tacos – named in honor of its predecessor, The Lime Truck – calls itself “New American cuisine without boundaries”. Taco flavors include sweet & spicy steak with Asian slaw; beef short ribs with horseradish crema; pork belly with mojo sauce; and grilled ahi tuna with honey-chipotle sauce. Other specialties include the ahi poke bowl or chimi noodle bowl; a short rib grilled cheese on sourdough; and a quesadilla with pork belly, sweet potato or short rib, in addition to more traditional options. They also serve craft beer, keg and specialty bottled wine.
TLT Food has additional locations in Pasadena and in Orange County in Irvine and Newport Beach.

Cha Cha Chili Asian/Korean
•••
Another contender on the Korean-Mexican stage is Cha Cha Chili, which is basically a burger and taco stand with outdoor seating located next to a car wash in an industrial area in El Sereno. You’re not likely to stumble upon it by accident unless you live in the area, however, fans make the pilgrimage for the seriously good Korean-Mexican specialties. In addition to their Kimchee quesadilla, bulgogi beef, kalbi short rib and spicy pork tacos, burritos, chimichangas and Hawaiian bread sliders, there are chicken, battered fish and tofu options and Korean or Chorizo Angus burgers. There’s even a Korean Philly Cheese Steak.

Mandoline Grill Food Truck
•••
Mandoline Grill is a Vietnamese food truck that includes Vietamese fusion tacos in corn tortillas with your choice of meat topped with fresh cucumber slices, pickled carrot and daikon, cilantro, and sriracha aioli. They also serve bun (rice vermicelli noodles), bahn mi (baguette sandwiches) and Vietnamese nachos topped with meat, jalapeno, mint, cilantro, scallion oil and sriracha oil. Their schedule is listed on their website about a week at a time.

The KooKoo Grill
The KooKoo Grill in Bellflower, south of LA, is a Japanese-Mexican fusion. They only offer two meats in their tacos, chicken or beef, both topped with cucumbers, onions, teriyaki sauce, sesame seeds and hot sauce, with avocados available as an add on. You can also get the same combo wrapped as a burrito or as a bowl or plate. The California burrito is teriyaki beef, french fries, 1000 island, pico, guacamole, lettuce, and hot sauce. The full menu includes salads, noodles, fried fish and shrimp, and the house special Kookoo Ball, a deep-fried fried rice ball resembling Italian arancini.
The original owners sold the Bellflower location and opened another KooKoo Grill in Anaheim. They both get stellar reviews.

White Boy Tacos
•••
White Boy Tacos is one guy with a cart who can be found at his regular spot in front of 740 South Broadway most nights from 9 or 10 pm to 3 am. The guy is Ben, who puts his unique spin on tacos like whiskey marinated steak with hash browns; BBQ pork with bacon and coleslaw; Albariño and Dijon marinated tilapia; sake marinated chicken breast with scrambled eggs, pepper and onions; and orange juice marinated tofu and grilled banana.
  11of 14
HomeState
HomeState is on this list, rather than my Best Authentic Tacos list because they’re hipster Austin-style Tex-Mex, rather than pure Mexican. They’re especially known for their breakfast tacos on fresh tortillas, including non-traditional options like the Blanco with organic egg whites, mushrooms and jack cheese. Other options include Austin-style chips and queso, Texas toast, Frito Pie in a Bag, or Kale Cabbage Salad. They also serve Cuvée Coffee imported from Austin, Mexican Coke and Hibiscus Limeade. Expect challenging parking and long lines especially for weekend breakfast/brunch.
  12of 14
Trois Familia
•••
Under a rainbow sign in a Sunset Blvd strip mall in Silver Lake, you’ll find the French-Mexican concept from celebrity chef Ludo Lefebvre, Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo. Open for breakfast and lunch, the only actual tacos on the menu are the double decker potato tacos with lime, crème fraiche, carrot pico and jack cheese. The menu is not completely meat-free, but  concoctions like the beet tartare tostada and carrot mole enchiladas find favor with vegetarians. Compared to other fusion tacos on this list, servings are quite small for the price. 18% service charge is added to all bills. No additional tipping is necessary.
13of 14
Kabob Express Fusion Truck – Mediterranean
The Kabob Express Fusion Truck offers traditional Mediterranean food in a pita, or you can choose from the Mexi-terranean Tacos, including a choice of chicken kabobs, shawarma, gyro slices or falafel in soft corn tortillas with hummus, pico de gallo, lemon juice and salsa, served with a side of dill cucumber salad and tzaziki sauce. Also available as a burrito. They don’t seem to have a website, but can often be found in Santa Monica at lunchtime on Food Truck Row at 31st and Ocean Park.
  14of 14
Falasophy
•••
Falasophy doesn’t just fuse Lebanese with Mexican in their Spicy Modern Tacos with falafel, avocado, pickled red cabbage, cilantro garlic-crema, house-pickled jalapeños in a flour tortilla. They also serve Banh Mi inspired Pita with pickled daikon and carrots, fresh cilantro, jalapeños garlic sauce or tahini with chicken shawarma or falafel. The rest of the menu is pretty traditional Lebanese.

LOS ANGELES | Chef Wes Avila started @guerillatacos as a food cart in 2012 while between jobs. In 2013 it evolved into a food cart and in 2018 a brick and mortar restaurant. 🇲🇽⁣ ⁣ The Arts District taco spot is known for serving up some of the most inventive tacos, tortas, tostadas, and other modern Mexican dishes in Los Angeles. Think no traditional ingredients like sea urchin, wild boar, and duck breast. All seasonal and locally sourced. 💯⁣ ⁣ A highlight when I visited was this Al pastor lamb plate. A soft, thick almost flatbread like tortilla topped with labneh, Persian cucumber salad, chile de valle, habanero labne, and succulent al pastor lamb. 🌮⁣ ⁣ If you're thinking that this sounds like a kebab you'd be right. Al pastor developed in central Mexico and is based on shawarma spit-grilled meat brought by Lebanese immigrants to Mexico. 🇱🇧⁣ ⁣ I had no idea that Mexican Lebanese fusion was a thing, and it's wonderful. Have you tried all pastor before? Let me know in the comments below. 👇 http://bit.ly/2VZzKei

Best Restaurants In Los Angeles
Tumblr media
Los Angeles is famous for a lot of things including the movie industry, surfing and the beautiful landscapes surrounding it. One aspect of the city that is often overlooked is its amazing wealth of restaurants. Known to locals but often forgotten by tourists, the cuisine of California stretches into wine territory in the north to the orange growing history of California’s South. The seafood originating from the vibrant Pacific Ocean also adds tantalizing opportunities for guests of Torrance massage places and hotels looking for more ways to enjoy the tranquility and luxuries of Los Angeles.
With the multicultural vibrance of Los Angeles, it’s unsurprising that so many cultures have left their mark on the cuisine of California. From the Japanese restaurants of Torrance to the all-American diners, this blog will explore some of the best restaurants in Los Angeles that will add flavor to your visit.
Ise Shima
This delightful Japanese eatery acts as the Miyako Hotel Torrance restaurant but is open to more than just guests. Watch as the chefs grill and prepare sushi whilst being served some of the best Japanese-Californian fusion cuisine in the state. From sushi, sashimi and wagyu dishes to the fresh locally caught seafood, Ise-Shima is a must for any visitors to the South Bay region of the city.
Mariscos Jalisco
Situated in Boyle Heights, Mariscos Jalisco is technically not a restaurant and more a collection of food trucks that tour the city and surrounding area. Though it might seem like fast-food on the surface, there is much more to Marisocs Jalisco than simple fast food tacos. The signature dish of deep fried shrimp and ceviches, tostadas and oysters makes for moreish and vibrant snacks and has cemented Jalisco as a main and much loved player on the LA street food scene.
Petit Trois
A slice of Paris in the heart of Hollywood and Sherman Oaks, these classy twin bistros are all about classic French dishes such as steak frites and mussels marinieres in a music-pumping and informal setting. Great for friends looking for a fun start to a night out or a lively date night, the Petit Trois simple and technical, but packs a satisfying punch.
Leo’s Taco Truck
Another take on taco culture in LA, Leo’s Taco Truck is located in the Mid-City area and offers a wealth of different Mexican style street food options. Alongside its tacos, guests of the Miyako Hotel Torrance CA and other foodie tourist hotels can enjoy a wealth of burritos, mulitas and huaraches at any time of day - and most popularly - through the night! Make sure not to miss their spit grilled pork - al pastor - which is always topped with a juice slice of pineapple to liven up the meaty taste.
Park’s BBQ
LA has a long history of Korean culture and offers a wealth of opportunities to indulge the fusion of BBQ and Asian food. One of the best Korean restaurants in town is Park's BBQ in Koreatown, a high quality meat vendor that has a few tricks up its sleeves for vegetarians too. From the boneless Wwagyu to spiced black cod, the possibilities are endless when it comes to barbequed meat and veg.
