Imagine you're a mob boss of the biggest and most feared mafia of the land. One day your subordinates find a homeless hippie and bring him to you because he can do magic. The hippie denies being able to do magic and then performs magic right in front of you. He says it's not magic because he knows how it works. It works by god's will, is what you're hearing when he explains it. He might be insane but he's definitely magic.

So you take the hippie with you because your former boss and now mob rival is holding your sister hostage and you're hoping to use him as a weapon. He says he won't use his magic to hurt people, and you can't make him. To prove his point, he makes a volcano explode and dies in front of your eyes. You're angry you lost someone so valuable but what can you do? He's dead.

Then a month later you hear that someone in this little town is performing miracles, healing people of incurable ilnesses. You send a spy and find out that hippie you found literally resurrected himself and is now about to marry whoever becomes the new mayor.

So you go over there, beat up the other Mayor candidate, and go into the church with your soon-to-be-husband hippie. You walk in and the hippie suddenly asks where did you get the picture of his dad's favorite angel? You're confused as fuck and then the priest says, 'Do you take this man, Jesus Christ, as your lawfully wedded husband?' and you can't even call bullshit because this weird homeless hippie being the literal Jesus Son of God actually explains a lot.

Of course you say 'yes', but you wonder what the fuck you got yourself into.

❤BWAHAHAHAHAH OMG, if Shen Yuan woke up in the Dr. Stone universe he would have been like 'Guess I'll die' about it, my man could barely survive Ancient China and that was only because he had his blorbo to obsess over. If Senku ended up in Demon Summoning 101 there probably wouldn't have been a plot because he wouldn't even think to try it, or he WOULD and then it would turn into a vivisection horror. For the demons.

🧡None of them? I try not to create characters in fics unless I specifically need them for something, because I'm shit at making OCs. If one of those ain't cooperating, they're getting aborted before readers even knew there was a new baby cooking.

💛I don't! I'm one of those weirdos who writes in complete and utter silence. I don't think the sound of my frantic keyboard clicks counts?

💚If I had to absolutely clown on myself and name one, I think it would be 'A very powerful character put in a situation where their power doesn't help them at all'. I don't think this is usually a trope? But it's like the one theme I've seen consistently in my works. I guess I just want to see god eat dirt and then cry about it.

🍣 If my fic was a meal, specifically GFPC, it would be Spekkoek. For those of you who are not familiar with it, it's called a Thousand layer Cake. It's sweet, cinnamony, melts in your mouth and it requires at least one sleepless night to make. You have to be quick, precise, and basically be a trained marathon runner to make it properly. As one recipe I saw put it: I do it not out of love but to brag. GFPC was born of a fever dream and a two-week long flu, and the knowledge behind it took me six years of college to achieve. And yet, I think it amassed my most loyal following yet. The slow burn represents that fact that each layer of Spekkoek's 18+ requires individual baking (you put a layer on and shove it in the oven for 3 min, and then add another and back in the oven GOD)

So yes. Spekkoek.

🖤Oh, that's easy. A virus. They're in the stone age, one mutated strain in a world before vaccines reaches the right person and suddenly society is no more. I'm not even necessarily talking about Senku.

💘Tsukasa, obviously, tho he got redeemed in canon too. His current redemption arc is still ongoing, but I think he's on the right track.

💔Well, half of Senku's worst nightmare kinda already came true. It turned out fine but then Gen added oil to the flame. Currently, I think he's most dreading someone stronger than Tsukasa coming along and taking him away, which basically restarts his first nightmare. He's afraid of his knowledge being used for evil, and him not being able to do anything to stop it.

❤️‍🩹 Very awkwardly but with a lot of heart. Senku would pepper his assurances with logic and solutions. His venting and problem solving phases are one and the same. It worked for him so far!

💝 Ho hum, not very well. There is no way to give Senku a happy ending immediately, because he's straddling two different worlds he's come to care about. He's working on advancing the stone age people to a proper civilisation and getting the industry necessary to feed 8 billion people back on track, but that will be a project of a lifetime, and he's aware of that. There's no good solutions without a hard work, but Senku wouldn't be very happy to wake up one day gray and wrinkly with all of his dreams already achieved. Doing it is half the fun.

I’m sure by now you have noticed the masked armed guards                        that have flanked the exits, the automatic doors locking. and if you haven’t, well you might                        wanna check on your LOVED ONES. you see, I have taken over THE METRO COURT                         HOTEL,  PORT CHARLES GENERAL HOSPITAL, THE PIER, THE DOCKS, and                         your favorite waterhole THE PORT. all of the exits are flanked with trained marksmen.                        don’t try to fight your way out, they are paid quite handsomely and their skills reflect that.                        but we all know how the citzens of port charles like to think of themselves as heroes. so                         to insure your cooperation, each of these locations lies a BOMB that would DEVASTATE.                         I will not tell you where the bombs are at your location, nor which flunkie of mine has the                         detonator. if any of you try to sabotage my plan or hail yourself a martyr, the bomb will be                        detonated.                          WHAT DOES THIS PSYCHOTIC VILLAIN WANT, YOU ASK ???                                 oh it’s simple really. i want TWENTY GRAND FROM EACH LOCATION.                           i’m a reasonable man, despite what some believe.         → so in short what has happens is a villain named Jerry Jacks has had armed         men take THE METRO COURT, THE PORT BAR & GRILL, GENERAL          HOSPITAL, THE PORT, and THE PIER hostage. There are bombs located some         where in each location. He has demanded 20k from each location and given 36         HOURS. and to show that he is serious, A BOMB JUST WENT OFF IN THE TOP         FLOORS OF THE METRO COURT and the top three floors have started to collapse.        → this event will have a separate tag GFPC THE TAKE OVER where you can put         stuff for the event. That was it is all clean and organized and stuff.        → this event will end FEBRUARY 4TH. the verse timeline is 36 hours, but we all got        lives and it wouldn’t be fair to squish this super cool epic event into a day and half. so       it will go on for a week but the verse time is only 36 hours.       → jerry jax is a NPC and he is not currently in port charles, so you can not physically       hurt him or kill him. but you can hurt his henchmen, or at least try. But remember that        to start you don’t know which one has the detonator       → so this event is gonna super danger angst, which is awesome !!! and this verse is       all about angst overload. But just keep in mind to keep it at least soap opera realistic.       a single character won’t be able to take out all of Jerry’s henchmen. But they can do       damage and come up with a good plan and maybe pair up with someone too. or maybe      they are focusing more on helping the hurt. or maybe using the crisis as a cover up for      someone they have been meaning to hurt for a while. or maybe they are trying to get to      a loved one.      → if you want to have a bomb go off in your plotting just check with @temperproblem          and there will be an announcement that that locations bomb has gone off.    Tyler’s phone lit up in his hands, and for a split second he replayed what just happened in his mind. Movement caught his eye as men in black masks appeared at the entrances. His eyes tried to follow their movements at once, automatically looking for a weakness. The ever present gun in his waistband felt cold against his skin, but reassured him at the same time. There were too many of them, about eight or so. They held their automatic weapons close. His attention turned back to the voice on his phone, the voice he knew haunted half the people in port charles. Some may be scared of him and Marcel, but everyone knew to be scared of Jerry Jacks. The damage he had done in the past to the city and the people Tyler cared about was catastrophic.

The last word rang in the lobby phone the phones of the guest. MOTIVATION. Then all of a sudden the ground beneath Tyler shook, an explosion echoing down in the lobby. It came from above. Everything froze, the movement of the armed men and the panicked guests seemed to be moving in slow motion as only one thing went through his head. IVY. ANNA. They were in one of the suites on one of the upper floors. Jerry Jacks smiling face was the last thing that lit up his phone before it went blank.  And then adrenaline coursed through his veins as he ran towards the stairs. He could hear shots firing behind him as he crouched low while diving into the stairwell. He knew they all couldn’t come running after him, they needed all the man power they could get to guard the entrances and keep the rest of the guests where they are. But that didn’t mean that weren’t more in the hotel. Another bullet narrowly missed him as he raced up the stairwell. He turned around, grabbing the gun from his waist band and quickly releasing the safety. He shot quickly at his attacker before starting his accent back up the stairs. The footsteps behind him told him that his shot missed. As he turned the corner to another flight of stairs, shots ran out again. He felt the heat before he felt any pain, a burning sensation in his right shoulder. The blood was warm against his skin, but his adrenaline caused him not to feel the pain the bullet that just ripped through his muscle. He turned again and fired another three shots from his gun. The first two missed as the attacker ducked, flying through the wall. The third hit his attackers leg, and Tyler watched him go down for just a second before he continued running. The heat and smell of smoke hit him and he knew he was nearing the floors that the explosion impacted. Debris started to litter the stairwell and he narrowly avoided the rubble. He finally reached the thirteenth floor, where he knew Ivy’s suite was. He quickly tried to remove enough debris to reach the door that had half fallen off it’s hinges. As he ripped through the doorway, his voice was loud and distress apparent. “ IVY. ANNA. IVY. ” He repeatedly called out while making his way through the wreckage.

Metroid Lore/Timeline: The Galactic Federation Military Structure and its History (Sources: The games, game manuals, metroid wikis, and instances of me just making it up as I go)

It all started with the Galactic Federation Police Corps (GFPC). As the Federation initially started as a form of trade regulation between planets, Federal laws would need enforcement, leading to a simple set of space fleets, officers and soldiers for that purpose. These troops and agents would ensure trade transactions and supply lines between planets were legal and secure, as well as lead galactic criminal investigations. As the new federal government grew and centralized into a galactic system of representatives, the use of the Police grew to ensure general order and security outside of the individual jurisdictions of worlds as well as continue to enforce federal laws.

What the new government didn't anticipate, however, was the onset of organized and strategic raids of piracy against trade ships, coming from a new faction that emerged. Dubbing this faction simply as "The Space Pirates", the Federation Bureau elected to expand its military, as the established police force was insufficient to combat the shockingly well-organized Pirates while also trying to lend its member civilizations aid in maintaining order on their own individual worlds where necessary. Thus a new division was established: the Galactic Federation Army Corps (GFAC). The Army forces were deployed on wider scale scenarios of mostly ground warfare on various planets, and had its hands full driving out conquering Pirate forces from member worlds and defending those worlds from future attacks. So full, in fact, that the Federation Bureau even started a new program, one that employed the use of skilled mercenaries and bounty hunters to supplement existing military forces, aid in special missions, and track down retreating Pirates into the further reaches of space. One of these independent contractors was of course the famous Samus Aran, who had gained much vital experience from serving in both the Police and Army Corps before striking out on her own.

Even after Samus took down the immediate Pirate threat on Zebes, however, it became apparent that those Zebesian Pirates were far from the only Pirate divisions. Over the next few years, seeing the need to stop relying so strongly on mercenaries and bounty hunters to keep the galaxy safe, the Federation created two new military factions. With the most advanced training and equipment, and often hiring Army and Police veterans who weren't ready to retire, the Galactic Federation Navy Corps (GFNC) and Marine Corps (GFMC) were established specifically to focus on countering the Space Pirates on a galactic scale and allow some levity for the Police and Army forces. We see the Navy and Marines specifically throughout the Prime games, as exclusively the only Federation military forces depicted in the space and planetside battles. The most advanced the technology used seems to get thus far is seen in the small mechs used by the special Marine squad in Federation Force. We don't yet know how the Prime series ends, but presumably the widespread warfare with the Pirates ends with most of them gone, only for them to make a small surprise return at Zebes in Super Metroid much later.

Once the widespread difficulty with the Pirates seems to be dealt with, the Federation seems to have allowed the Marine division to mostly retire, focusing on making continued use of the Police, Army and hunters/mercenaries for galactic peacekeeping. The Navy, meanwhile, is likely stationed at the edges of the Federation-controlled galactic regions, securing the borders against future pirate attacks, as well as other potential enemy factions such as the Kriken Empire.

In the background for Metroid 2, we learn that a special ops offshoot of the Police Corps, the Special Squad (GFSS), was sent to SR-388 to rescue those who were sent before them to find any sign of the Metroid life forms native to the planet, for the sake of wiping the creatures out. They aren't heard from again after landing planetside, and as we know Samus accepts a contract to investigate and finish the job concerning the metroids.

In Other M, we see that the Army also sends out specialized groups of soldiers for special ops, as Samus cooperates with the 07th Platoon on the story's overall mission.

The standard armor design used in the Federation Army. Optimized for planetside/ground warfare scenarios as well as special operations involving similarly armed and armored opponents. Likely designed with energy shielding and ammunition carrying capacity in mind.

The Federation Police Special Squad, clad in powered armor suits optimized for exploration and protection in hostile alien environments. The armor is likely designed to defend against hard physical attacks, falling damage, radiation, extreme temperatures, etc.

The standard Marine armor as seen in Prime 2. As they were (according to the theory above) designed to be top of the line in the Prime era in order to combat the widespread, coordinated and intense Pirate attacks, these were likely the most capable and expensive Federation Military armor suits ever produced, as the Marine division was intended to lessen the Federation's dependence on independent contractors.

Estate Planning: Leaving a Legacy Instead of a Mess

What will you leave behind for those you love when you’re gone?

An important of retirement planning is estate planning.

First, you can’t take the wealth you’ve accumulated with you, and one of the reasons many look to build a strong financial portfolio, is to be able to ensure their loved ones are taken care of after they’re gone.

Second, no one wants to a mess for those they care about to sort out – or worse, take on – when they leave this earth. Furthermore, most people would hate to think their heirs had to deal with critical decisions, financial quandaries, or even dividing possessions, at a time when they will be grieving as well.

Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) Harboring ALK Translocations: Clinical Characteristics and Management in a Real-Life Setting: a French Retrospective Analysis (GFPC 02–14 Study)

Abstract

Background

Chromosomal translocations involving the anaplastic lymphoma kinase gene (ALK) are rare oncogenic events found in 3–5% of non-small-cell lung cancers (NSCLC). Limited data have been published on the management of these patients outside clinical trials.

Objective

To investigate the clinical characteristics and management of patients with NSCLC harboring ALK translocations (ALK+) in a real-life setting in France.

Methods

This multicenter, observational, retrospective study included all NSCLC patients harboring ALK translocations diagnosed in participating centers between January 2012 and December 2014. Patient data include clinical characteristics, disease management, and outcomes [progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS)].

Results

The 31 participating centers reported data on 132 patients, of whom 51% (n = 67) were male. The median age was 60.1 ± 14.5 (standard deviation) years; 89% (n = 106/119) had performance status 0/1 at diagnosis; 79% (n = 103/130) were non- or former smokers; 93% (n = 120/129) had adenocarcinomas and 74%(n = 97)/19%(n = 25)/7%(n = 10) had disease stages IV/III/I-II at diagnosis, respectively; co-mutations included EGFR (n = 2), BRAF (n  = 2), KRAS (n = 1), and HER2 (n = 1). Of the patients with stage IV NSCLC (n = 97), 96% received first-line treatment [75% chemotherapy-based, 21% ALK tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI)], with an associated response rate (RR), disease-control rate (DCR), and PFS of 42%, 64%, and 7.5 [95% confidence interval (CI) 5.9–9.5] months, respectively; 62% received second-line treatment (28% chemotherapy, 72% ALK TKI) with an associated RR, DCR, and PFS of 43.4%, 70%, and 4.7 (95% CI 4.0–8.1) months, respectively. The 2-year OS was 56.7% (95% CI 45.5–70.4%); median OS was not reached.

Conclusion

The results of this real-life analysis suggest that the prognosis of NSCLC patients with theALK translocation may be better than that of the overall NSCLC population, but the outcomes were poorer than those of ALK+ NSCLC patients included in clinical studies.
