I posted earlier about getting a shoutout in the annual, national survey (GSVC) and I just want to take a moment to reflect on reading through three 60+ page reports on what hundreds of people think of us.
As I’ve posted in the past, survey feedback is hard for me. One, I really like input, but really only constructive input. Don’t just complain about what you don’t have, tell me what you want that I can actually do. Two, any survey with a lot of negative feedback makes me feel a little sad because I truly love my org and want everyone to have that wonderful experience I had.
A not insignificant number of people don’t understand the value of DEI work, to the point that they want inclusion, they just don’t want it framed as DEI. What a catch-22. The responses to political affiliation were also a time. Many said “why are you asking,” which I think is valid, it’s just very much a demographic question. Is Girl Scouts political? Yes, but.
Yes because we teach our scouts to address the issues of the world, and you can’t do that without being political. We have a entire badge titled “Public Policy.” It’s non-partisan, but policy is frequently made political. Yes but because we’re a nonpartisan organization whose politics reflect the people involved. It doesn’t matter your affiliation, but it does. In case you were wondering, the majority of our volunteers are moderate or liberal.
One parent wrote that they are an anarchist.
In other news, people hate cookies. Not everyone, many people love cookies. I don’t know what to say, I also hate cookies. But people also don’t want to pay more for things. Events, camps, they’re subsidized. I am subsidized.
They want more input. They don’t want to provide specific input. They want more support. They want less emails. They want more staff. They want less overhead. They want staff to stay. They want staff to work more hours and do more things.
The squeaky wheel gets the grease. Or something like that.

Update on Romeo

I haven’t been able to get Romeo in for a follow-up check. He’s acting a lot better since his last vet visit. His bum wound is healed. His appetite is back and even larger than ever!
But he’s started having brown eye discharge. I’m so worried his body is full of infection. He needs a follow up check with lab tests to look into that and to monitor his kidney function.
The vet specifically mentioned a repeat test for SDMA, CREA, and BUN. But we’re not gonna do the SDMA because I’ve been told that’s only useful for early detection of ckd and we’re past that already. But I am going to ask for a phosphorus check.
I’ve read a lot about feline ckd and this is how I understand phosphorus. It’s a byproduct of processing meat. In healthy cats, the kidney can excrete it no problem. But in cats with ckd, the kidney can’t do its job of getting rid of waste. So the waste builds up in the blood instead and makes the cat feel ill.
Protein=phosphorus. But since cats need protein, it’s a delicate balance of giving just enough protein to maintain healthy body weight but no more that phosphorus is increased and taxes the kidneys too much.
Specially formulated renal diets are low in phosphorus and have been proven to slow the progression of renal disease.
There’s also phosphate binders which prevent phosphorus from being absorbed and the cat just poops it out instead of it building up in the bloodstream.
So I’m thinking we either put him on a renal diet or do our best with regular food and a phosphate binder. The problem with this is phosphate binders are so hard to find. I would ship it in from Amazon but it’s out of stock there too. 😞
In addition to that, I’m going to ask the vet if a urinalysis is needed since he peed outside of the litter box. Maybe he has a blockage or an infection.
Since blood pressure issues could be a complication of ckd, he needs his BP monitored as well.
He may also need an ultrasound or x-ray to see if his kidneys have shrunk or are enlarged.
Here is the breakdown for the fundraising goal. I’ve decided to split his care between two clinics. His blood chemistry monitoring can be done for cheaper at GSVC, but they don’t have an ultrasound or x-ray machine so we’ll have to go to AKVH for that. It’s like the one big animal hospital here.
GSVC:
200 vet fee for follow-up check
1,050 blood chemistry
450 complete blood count
50 blood pressure monitoring
AKVH:
700 vet fee
200 urinalysis
900 ultrasound
1,050 Monge Vet Solution Renal dry food 1.5kg (1 month supply if fed alone, 2 months if mixed feeding with wet food)
Total PhP 4,600 (approx. CAD 121)
The only other options here for renal food are Hill’s (almost always out of stock) and Royal Canin (500 pesos more expensive).
Ideally, Romeo should be on an all wet food diet since he’s prone to getting dehydrated. And really he should be getting subcutaneous fluids as well. But the vets here don’t like that for some reason.
Prescription wet food would be best, but all the clinics/shops are out of stock, and it’s just way too expensive anyway at over 100 Php per 100g. The recommended amount to feed for his weight is 150g per day. So that would be 150 Php per day just for him. Not sustainable for us.
I’m selling all my things, short of my own kidneys, to cover Romeo’s healthcare. I’ve sold our water dispenser and our microwave so far. I would sell my Harry Potter books, but my aunt will get mad because she gifted them to me. And I love them dearly, so you know I’m feeling desperate when I’m willing to sell them.
I know it’s terminal. But after a week of medications, he’s acted like the happiest, healthiest boy. He’s still got a lot left in him. I just want to give him as much time as possible.

Startups!
One of the coolest things I’ve done at Haas is work on startups with colleagues. One of them, Smart Traffic, is doing quite well. We presented the idea to a Startup Competition (GSVC - Global Social Ventures Competition) and we are now in the regional final round! You can check out our video for this round here:
