Citizen Jake experience.
Being a huge fan of Indie films myself, I spent months of doing my thesis studying their social relevance and how they play as a tool in promoting social awareness. So ever since Citizen Jake started filming, i’ve been following their progress online, waiting. (Well aside from being Atom’s fan ever since HS).
I noticed how Citizen Jake was super brave when it comes to discussing political and societal issues, kaya I told myself -- I HAVE TO SEE THIS FILM.
And it was exactly few days after I ended the semester, merong contest via twitter where they are giving away free tickets for the special screening of Citizen Jake. Being a fangirl myself, nagdecide ako to join since SM City Lucena was not on the list of cinemas na magpapalabas nung film. I tried my luck, and DESTINY SIGURO! Hahahahaha
So I travelled to Manila a day early, (5 hours Lucena to Pasay) and it was my first time to travel alone via LRT then MRT the day of the screening (Diba? things we do for love!)
Moving on, the gates opened at around 6PM. Mahaba ang pila, star studded, but most importantly, it was full of people na alam mong handang makita ang realidad at matuto.
So, about the film itself. Being a Mass Comm student and an aspiring journalist ever since childhood, nakita ko yung sarili ko kay Jake ton of times. “Journalist ka lang” “blogger ka lang” “bobo ka” just few of the things people say to journalists who they run to pag kailangan nila ng information, ironic. And feeling ko Atom was a perfect fit for his character since we already have that prejudice of him being a journalist, and someone who tends to fight for what he knows is right (mabuhay mga aktibista!)
Another interesting thing about Jake is his character and background story. Kasi he’s the son of a senator, a former Marcos crony and he has a dumb congressman brother who does nothing but cite the Godfather film. He also has this missing link from his past where he’s searching for his mom. These imperfections make Jake real. Making him tough, not giving in to the stereotypes na ‘ay anak ng politician, magpopolitician din yan’. Jake decided to go a different path, to go against the norms.
(Being a huge Atom fan myself, he’s super good-looking the entire film, pero SWEAR bonus lang siya. The film was super story-wise you’ll forget about how adorable Atom is)
All of the characters are also very superb, especially Sen. Jacobo (Teroy Guzman) He’s way too good to be a villain, it looks natural! LOL. Gabby Eigenmann, or big brother was irritatingly evil and dumb at the same time, Anna Luna (I’m a fan!), Max Collins, Luis Alandy and Nonie Buencamino also did a great job.
When it comes to the setting, (being a Baguio fan myself) It was distinctly established and the world was given this opportunity to bloom on its own. Sobrang natuwa ako when they discussed history along with building the world. It’s hitting two birds with one stone. And, make that hitting three kasi tinamaan ako when they mentioned about how tourists always go to Baguio and ‘wala namang ginagawa, kundi magpaikot ikot lang’.
Simple lines, pero iba ang atake. Some lines are even funny when they blurted it out pero mapapailing ka and you will realize that it’s actually true. Like another significant line “Election na naman! Panibagong set na naman ng mga halimaw, Ang tatanga natin!” (nonverbatim). Sobrang talino ng palitan ng mga linya na mapapangiti ka, matatakot ka, mapapaisip ka.
Technically speaking, being masscomm student, I have to admit how the film was so raw making it the typical indie film; shaky, dragging shots, excellent choice of music. Pero one thing I got bothered (in the technical aspect) was the use of wipe transition. I don’t know pero I cringed a little with it (arte ko lang siguro lol) Pero, being a typical indie film itself -- kita na pinag gugulan ng oras at panahon ang kwento, ang paraan ng pagkekwento, ang lahat ng aspeto. The inclusion of history, giving out facts --how the way it went to thorough research was superb.
And although the film ended with an open ended idea (distinct indie film characteristic, it makes us think *wink) What I got from it is that -- The Philippines is Citizen Jake. Pilit kumakawala sa nakasanayan, pilit na lumalaban at humanap ng kasagutan. Pero may malaking puwang, may nakaraang maiitim, magulo at nakakatakot.
After seeing the film, tbh I got scared. Scared that what the film showed was true, and mahirap kumawala sa sistemang mas matanda pa sa ating lahat. Pero it also gave me hope -- we should always do what we do with the purpose of helping our country and the mass. Kapag may kapangyarihan ka to influence people, do it! do it for the greater good. Maglingkod sa bayan, hindi sa tao.
Like what Teroy Guzman said at the forum after the film “Yes it may be dangerous to be outspoken, but it is even more dangerous to stay quiet. Choose a side, people. Stop being fence-sitters. Stop being apathetic just because your lives are not affected because believe me, they are being affected.” that struck me.
So, congratulations to the Citizen Jake team!
Mabuhay ang Pelikulang Pilipino!
