Does anyone have shoujo recommendations that aren’t too cheesy?
I’ve never found anything truly amazing since Gals!

Okay this is pertaining to my next writing project which is a Supergals fanfic, but do y’all know about the Gyaru fashion subculture in Japan? It's a bit hard to explain
Some gyaru girls deeply tan themselves and some don't, and a lot of people see the tanning aspect as blackface but l'm kind of on the fence about it?
Like it's NOT face paint but they ARE trying to emulate the looks of black models (IIRC) But this is only SOME gyaru, not all. (The tan style in specific is a subculture of gyaru known as ganguro)
The fashion itself is supposed to go against a lot of beauty standards in Japan. In Japan, beauty is thought of as pale skin, black hair, and a traditional beauty. Gyaru borrows elements from western pop fashion and even though it can be seen as "Japanese preps," it's actually an equivalent of punk considering the culture
It's like how kawaii styles are, no-kidding, considered punk in Japan
Anyway if you understand what gyaru is now (the word is also romanized as "gal" or the plural "gals")
My fanfiction is going to be a femslash crossover between Supergals, Sasameki Koto, Ultra Maniac, and Maria-sama ga Miteru. They're all schoolgirl series, but Supergals is about gals, Sasameki Koto focuses on sapphic themes, Ultra Maniac has a witch girl, and Maria-Sama takes place in a Catholic school (and is also very sapphic)
My fanfiction is gonna be "Gals, Lesbians, Witches, and Catholic Schoolgirls'" Maybe I'II change Gals to "Punk Gals" for more impact
It’s planned on being about all these girls meeting somehow, and then getting into relationships. Specifically Yumi/Sachiko, Sumika/Ushio, Ayu/Nina, and maybe Ran/Miyu/Aya. There will also be male side characters featured.
Also, Gals and Maria-Sama are COMPLETE opposite in tone. The girls in Gals are super rebellious and punk and Maria-Sama girls will faint if you utter a bad word.
Imagine Ran Kotobuki cursing her ass off and all the MariMite girls turning red and flustered. Except for Sei. Lmao

Yay! Fujii Mihona has announced the release of the first of her self-published digital GALS!! anthologies in English! You can purchase the digital book here via her BOOTH account for 550 yen.
There may be a few things that don't flow as easily for an English audience due to the GALS!! sequel series not having an official English-language release. However, if you're a fan of the characters from the OG series you should be able to follow most of it. A print version may happen in the future if there's enough content to warrant it.
Personally, I think it's very exciting to see an establish shoujo mangaka directly releasing digital content for English-speaking fans in an affordable and accessible manner. Please support Mihonacchi by purchasing this volume if you're in a position to do so as this has absolutely been a labour of love for the artist and it's a fun little read.
