The Business Side of Game Development: Budgeting and Finance
While imagination and technical skills are key drivers in game development, the business side—particularly budgeting and financial planning—can make or break a project. From indie developers creating their first mobile game to AAA studios managing multi-million-dollar productions, financial strategy plays a crucial role in sustaining development and delivering a successful final product.

Why Budgeting Matters in Game Development
Creating a game is an intensive process that often takes years, multiple teams, and hundreds (if not thousands) of work hours. Without a strong financial foundation, even the most promising projects risk being delayed, underdelivered, or canceled entirely.
Key components of budgeting include:
Staffing (salaries, freelancers, outsourcing)
Software and tools (licenses, subscriptions)
Marketing and distribution
Testing and QA
Legal and administrative costs
Post-launch support and updates
A clear, realistic budget ensures your team doesn’t burn through funding too quickly or underestimate costs.
Understanding the Phases of a Game Budget
Pre-Production Costs
Concept art, game design documentation, and initial prototyping
Small core teams begin to shape the game's vision and technical direction
Production Costs
The most resource-intensive stage, involving artists, programmers, writers, sound engineers, and more
Includes purchase of engine licenses, motion capture tech, and AI tools
Marketing and Launch Expenses
Social media campaigns, influencer partnerships, ads, launch trailers
Platform fees (Steam, PlayStation Store, App Store, etc.)
Post-Launch Support
Bug fixes, patches, downloadable content (DLC), and customer service
Community management and content updates to retain engagement
Tools and Methods for Financial Planning
Many studios use production software integrated with financial tools like:
Excel or Google Sheets (for small teams or early planning)
Project management suites like Jira, Asana, or Monday.com
Dedicated budgeting software such as Float, Scoro, or Forecast
Game-specific analytics to project ROI based on player trends and purchase behaviors
Tracking your burn rate (monthly spending vs. income/funding) is vital throughout the process.
Budgeting for Sustainability
Modern game development is shifting toward sustainable practices—both in terms of finances and production health. Smart studios now prioritize:
Reasonable timelines to avoid crunch
Scalable revenue models (like battle passes or subscriptions)
Data-driven decisions for post-launch updates and expansions
Sustainable finance planning leads to better team morale, more consistent releases, and long-term studio growth.
No matter how compelling your game idea is, without strong financial planning, it may never reach players. A sound budget ensures that your creative vision is supported by structure, enabling your studio to deliver, iterate, and grow.
Game developers who understand the business side of their craft don’t just make great games—they build lasting brands. So whether you're crafting an indie title or heading up a massive production, make budgeting and finance an integral part of your development cycle.

MediEvil PS4 Review

MediEvil was first released in 1998 for the original PlayStation and was then re-release on the PlayStation Network in 2007. Now you can enjoy this classic on your PS4.
The Story of MediEvil revolves around Sir Daniel Fortesque that led an army to defeat the evil sorcerer Zarok. During the initial charge Sir Fortesque was shot down by an arrow but was still seen as a Hero. Zarok has now returned and so has Sir Fortesque to stop him and now he has a chance to prove himself as a real hero.
They haven’t changed much from the original game apart from the graphics and better controls. With the game being so old, I expected some issues or that the game would play like a PS one game. To my surprise, the game actually played really well, and the controls and movements worked like a more modern game.
The graphics does look great with the cartoonish feel and they really made effort that the game feels like it was released now, instead of 20 years ago. The audio is great as well and blends in well with the theme of the game. It is a great game to have released so close to Halloween. I enjoyed the story and also enjoyed playing a more simplistic game that delivers on what it needs.

MediEvil is a great classic to own in your arsenal and a cool game to play through if you never played it before. The game brought a lot of joy to me while replaying the story, bringing back some memories and at the same time appreciation of the work they put in to bring this game to the modern age.
Reviewed on: PS4 Genre: Action Publisher: SIE Release Date: 25 October 2019 Review Copy: Yes
Likes: Great to see how they modernized it with graphics and controls Dislikes: Would have liked to have a small add-on story maybe?

Wanderlust:HUW169 GAMEFINAL!
Synopsis: Escapism is his forte and wanderlust his gateway to explore unknown regions far beyond any physical existence. Kook’s a hard working hipster at a local coffee shop but his day takes an odd turn when he finds himself jumping over rooftops on this bad acid trip. On an exploration of mind versus matter and separating the real from the fake Kook will find that seeking distraction may lead you down peculiar paths. Kick it with him as he disassociates from the world and has a pretty gnarly encounter with the nearly extinct OCTO-RANTULA!
Team: Our team consisted of Tony and I. Most of the building/coding of the game consisted Tony’s solid knowledge of coding and blue printing and of me making a mess with the code as Tony cleaned it up my and corrected pretty much every coding error. The 2d and 3d assets are also a mixture of both Tony and I’s work. We both have very different artistic identities and skill sets but they somehow meshed together to create visuals that all conform to their own atheistic. Tony was such an awesome partner and really taught me how to co-create within the scope of coming up with a presentable product while following a project based deadline.

Death Stranding Review

When Death Stranding was announced at E3 in 2016 it created waves. Since then, nothing changed, Death Stranding is probably the most anticipated title of 2019 and I had the great pleasure to review it.
What drew me to this game is not the all-star cast or the insanely good-looking graphics but the whole setting of the story. It grabs you right off the bat, that first trailer shows you a very little glimpse of what happened to the world and raises so many questions. The game is directed by the legendary Hideo Kojima and is the first title after him leaving Konami. The star-studded cast is insane with the likes of Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Troy Baker, Lindsay Wagner and Emily O’Brien just to name a few.
I could not wait to sink my teeth into Death Stranding and waited in anticipation while the game downloaded. Once I started it was bliss… The game starts off with the epic story and even though you are very much in the dark of what is going on it grabs your attention and holds on tight right through.
youtube
The game is set in an open world futuristic America, but you will not recognize anything except the shape of the continent in the map view. The tutorial will ease you into the gameplay and teach you everything you will need along the way, it can feel like an information overload at times but there is a great tips/guide section that you can revisited to read about some things you might’ve missed.
You play as Sam Porter a delivery man in this new world, because he is inflicted with DOOMs he can sense BTs but not see them, this gives him the unique ability to traverse the open world much safer than most humans. Now, you might see words here and think WTF am I talking about. BTs are beings that have come with the Death Stranding event and you will learn more about them as you play the game. People inflicted with DOOMs have special abilities which you will also learn more about.
Some of Sam’s abilities includes being able to find his way back to his body after he has died, sensing the BTs and his bodily waste and fluids are unique in a way that will be a positive outcome against the fight with the BTs. This might not be sufficient enough info for you but part of the greatness of the game is to learn about all these things and I do not want to spoil anything of that for you. You also get accompanied by a BB. A Bridge Baby, very little is known about them, but they can actually see BTs and your BB will assist you a lot in your journey especially when facing timefall. Your BB is special and as the game goes on you learn more about your specific BB and the history of them in general.
Part of your job will be to help Bridges (a Corporation in the game) re-establish the UCA (United Cities of America) on the Chiral Network. By doing this you help to reconnect people, restore information on history and data and also unlock new technology in the combat against BTs. The BTs aren’t the only enemies though, you will encounter Mules that want to steal your cargo and there is a type of terrorist group lead by Higgs. You will also partner with a woman, Fragile, who owns Fragile Express. There are some grey lines here if she is good or bad and some history with the terrorists but again more info will be revealed as you play.
While slugging cargo across lands you will have to face challenges like keeping your balance with the cargo as to not fall and damage the cargo. Timefall can happen at any time where BTs will appear to give you another challenge. When you deliver cargo, you will get rated on your performance and the status of the cargo, some missions might even add some extra challenges like time limit and cargo that can’t be damaged more than a certain percentage. With you rating you get likes, this is kind of how famous you become and if people will give you other jobs or unlock some more features from their station. Damaged cargo can be repaired with some repair spray which can help a lot. One cool feature of cargo is that you can pick up lost cargo along your journey and if you are not close to delivering it to the end point, you can entrust it to someone else to complete and still get some of the rewards.
You can easily get distracted from the main mission with side quest deliveries and sometimes there can be a lot of up and down travelling between points, but this is all optional and still great to do. Later on you will get different types of vehicles, bots and machinery that will helps you with your cargo delivery which will allow you to take on a lot of quests at the same time. Just don’t make the mistake like I did. I had about 3 active delivery requests and completed one, then had the opportunity to take two others on. When I accepted it the one delivery’s cargo was so uge I could not load it anywhere and there was a 60 min time limit bound to the delivery. I was then forced to entrust this delivery to another player and hope that I get something in return for it.
Although Death Stranding is a Single Player game, it does feature some Multiplayer aspects. This is in the form where you might meet other players along the journey. As you build or rebuild structures other players can contribute to it, use it and like it. I loved how I started a section of rebuilding a structure and other players came to complete it and it benefitted us all at the end of the day. It is great to deploy ladders or anchor points and see how it not only benefitted you but the community as a whole.
youtube
The soundtrack of the game is insane and just adds to the feel of the setting, at certain points set music will start to play to build-up a section of the story and other times you can choose music to play at post boxes, bridges, charge stations and more. This is a great feature and I also enjoy how you unlock more music by reaching certain ranks at stations.

I can go on and on about Death Stranding but instead of me rambling on and keep you here for more time, you should buy Death Stranding and start playing it. This game is definitely the game to beat this year! What are you waiting for get your copy now…

Likes: Amazing story and unbelievable setting. Great gameplay with a lot of freedom with some structure.

WRC 8 Review

It’s time to get your cars dirty and drive your way through challenging terrains in WRC 8.
There has always been a battle between the WRC game series and DiRT, recently the latter always takes the trophy but this time there are some mixed feelings. Let’s first start with the bad of WRC 8. The graphics leaves you a bit confused, the cars look great and there are some differences between the different cars you can choose to drive. The environment looks amazing from afar but looking at the detail closer to your gameplay is a different story. Crowds look like a copy and paste job and doesn’t play any relevance to what is happening close to them. The details of the road can give you some problems in terms of bumps and obstacles, they only become clearer when you get close, giving you no time to react instead you need to pay close attention to your co-pilot giving you direction. The racing feels more arcade like, and even though I prefer this it might not appeal to hardcore racers.
On the flip side the campaign mode is incredible! Instead of just a linear career that you follow, you get to control a lot more of your team and your sponsors. For team management you have to hire people to fill slots of vital parts of your team. They also don’t last forever and need to rest from time to time, adding a little more management element. Some of the people you need to apply to your team will fulfil functions like determining the weather for the races, perming physical therapy, agents, mechanics and more. This team can provide a vital role to your performance and then you still need to pay them as well. There is also a skill tree that you can use to unlock bonuses like quicker recovery time for the team, boosting money income and spending less time fixing your car during races just to name a few. This adds a lot more depth to the single player element and the game then becomes a lot more than just a Rally game.
youtube
So, as you can see the game does give some mixed signals, but I still thoroughly enjoyed playing it. I love how it is a little more arcade driving style and not as difficult as other racing games. The multiplayer modes of the game will be available at a later stage so I could not test that out.

WRC 8 bring a new flavour to team management and even though it lacks the visual appeal in a lot of places it still offer a lot for any Rally fan.

MXGP 2019 Review

This year’s edition of the MXGP video game is set to release on the 27th August. There are some new game modes and features that has been added which will give fans some more fun to have on this title.
The first new mode is the track editor. The track editor will allow players to create great looking tracks and share them online for everyone to enjoy. It is quite easy to use, and you can choose between 4 different landscapes. The next big new feature is the playground. The playground is settled in Provence, a free roam area where you can hone your skills. Here you can also complete special trials to earn unique customizations. Within the playground you can play the waypoint game mode that allows you to set up a path by putting checkpoints down that riders need to follow.
The game looks great and the new modes adds a lot of play time value and is something that has been missing in the series for a while. The gameplay is great, and the environments adds the extra flavour to the races. Personally, I like speed more than the MXGP style, but the game is great to play and any fan will enjoy the game. It is always great when they add new features and build up on a game series to improve the value of the game.

MXGP 2019 adds a lot more for us to enjoy, the environments look great and the new playground just adds something special.

Team Sonic Racing Review

Sonic and his friends are back, this time in a racing kart game to speed along tracks and uncover a mystery. Team Sonic Racing is a bit different to other kart racers in that it focuses on co-op play.
Team Sonic Racing was developed by Sumo Digital who also worked on Sonic & Sego All-Stars Racing and Transformed, they used the same engine of these games but obviously modified it to fit. The other difference is that Team Sonic Racing only includes characters from the Sonic universe.
There are a few different modes to play the game in, Team Adventure, Grand Prix, Time Trial and Exhibition. Team Adventure is a story driven mode where you play through a series of races through various environments and experience the story of the game. Here your characters are a bit restricted in who you can choose but it is a great experience. Progressing through this mode will unlock extras that you can then use in all the other modes.
There is a total of 15 characters that you can choose to race with and most of them fall into 1 of 3 categories, speed, technique and power. Speed has the best top speed, technique concentrates more on handling and power is the most durable. What makes Team Sonic Racing different is the focus on Co-op and team play. Each racer is part of a 3-character team and during races you work as a team to finish the race well. You can offer to send power ups, called Wisps, to your team mates and they can also send you some. Actions that your team perform builds up your team’s ultimate power which can then be activated to give your team an incredible advantage.
Wisps are the power-ups that you pick up during races and these are types of weapons or abilities that you use during the race to give yourself a little edge, these are in most kart racing games and is not very different from the norm.

You will earn in-game currency while playing the game that you can use to purchase parts for your karts, these can improve the carts for the character and change the aesthetic look. You can also customize the paint and horn sounds of your carts.
The game supports four-player local multiplayer, twelve online and up to three in the Team Adventure mode. It is great fun to play with friends and it does deliver well on the team-based racing idea.
youtube
Team Sonic Racing is fun and a great new way to enjoy kart racing games. It might not appeal to some hardcore gamers but is a great party fun game to be played with friends.

Rage 2 Review

Let’s get some Mayhem going in Rage 2! One of my most anticipated games which left me a bit confused at the end…
When the first Rage was released in 2011, I just got back into console gaming and it was such a fun game, easily some of the best memories I have on my PS3. It was a unique setting and you could spend hours roaming around and doing stuff. So, when Rage 2 was announced I jumped around like an energizer bunny, but now I feel a bit confused about the game.
Rage 2 feels like a First-person shooter that was pushed into an Open World game, it doesn’t really push across what it wants to be. You have freedom of going where you want to go but at the same time progression feels very linear. Vendors feel kind of pointless unless you need to stock up on ammo and a lot of times you will feel directionless, not knowing what to do or where to go.
The game is tons of fun, do not get me wrong. The First-person action is insane and when you are in a battle it is mayhem all around. You start off the game with an event of the Authority returning and you become the last Ranger standing from the Vinelands. You are then tasked with a mission to destroy the Authority and then it feels like you are left on your own. You can go meet any of the three main mission givers first, it all depends on you. Along your journey you will encounter tons of little locations like bandit camps, road block, sentry towers and more, which is amazing, but this can become quite monotonous very quickly. The main locations are a bit more unique and finding Ark locations are great to improve your character.
The way they created the character progression is not bad but at the same time you already feel like a Superhero and if you hone your Assault Riffle skills then it doesn’t feel like you need anything else. The other weapons are fun to use but most of the time you will find yourself switching back to Aunty Faithfull. Upgrading vehicles and gadgets feel very expensive and you will have to do a lot of grinding to get the money or items for the upgrades. Unlocking vehicles can also feel like a mission as you need to find one and then drive it back to a garage or trading town, although once you get the hang of it, it can be quite rewarding.
There is a great roadmap worked out for the game and hopefully some gameplay mechanics will be changed with updates. Below is an image of the roadmap.

The game looks amazing and you still feel the remnants from the first game throughout the environments. I love how the roads change and the different districts have their unique looks at certain areas. The one spot I was cruising to a mission point and suddenly, the road turned into a 4×4 track and I quickly had to react not to damage my car. The style works well for the universe setting and gives you a proper post-apocalyptic feel.
youtube
The reason I fell confused about the game is that it is fun and there is so much to occupy your time in the game, but it feels like it didn’t deliver what it should’ve. It feels more like an open-world Doom game than what the first Rage game felt like. So, it is a great game, but I think the delivery was wrong or expectations were incorrectly set up. Still, if you love FPS action games then you will enjoy Rage 2.

LEGO Movie 2 Videogame Preview
Last week Gamefinity invited us to preview The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame and boy were we in for some good surprises with the new game!
A lot has changed from the original The LEGO Movie Videogame release(that came out in 2014), from improvements in visuals, controls and there is even a new Sandbox area.
We got to play about an hour worth of Game play and I can say it is really going to be awesome. Almost all the cut scenes are rendered in the game instead of using cues and scenes from the movie. Another cool thing that I noted is that instead of cycling through your characters(for special moves) you can actually select them from a menu and a bonus is that your character selection is just a skin.
Any of your LEGO figures can now build your contraption to further advance in the game and this is all thanks to the new Build pages that you get to collect in-game. Instead of just building contraptions from thin air you have to now collect certain colour blocks to complete say a trampoline or a sprayer system to extinguish fires.
Overall I really loved the preview and can’t wait to see what the full game will bring. The LEGO Movie 2 Videogame is definitely going to be Awesome!
