Thinking about that color correction/grading post I made yesterday, and thinking about Garrett Gilchrist's 4K restoration of Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure, which I watched recently.
And thinking about how much it bugged me how much of the film looked washed out. So I grabbed it off the internet archive and played around with it a bit.
(Garrett's on the left, mine on the right)

And like, I don't want to step on anyone's toes here or anything, but this took me like... 30 minutes to find the right levels that I think boost the quality of this significantly. I think Garrett does some really spectacular, necessary work, but it needed just a little more.
And again, I'm by no means a professional at this. There are undoubtedly better ways to bring out color and contrast than what I've done here. It's just a simple example.

Super Mario Bros. (1993) Extended Cut - 30 years later
CINEMATIC BANDICOOT REVIEWS - SUPER MARIO BROS. (1993) EXTENDED CUT - 30 YEARS LATER #SuperMario #SuperMarioBros #SuperMarioBrosMovie
With “The Super Mario Brothers Movie” in theaters, it’s only fitting to lookback on the film that birthed the video game adaptation curse. History “Super Mario Bros.” was the first video game adapted into a movie, and production was akin to “Saving Mr. Banks” in how long it took to get off the ground, as documented in the book “Lights, Camera, Game Over!: How Video Game Movies are Made” by Luke…

Interim Poll!
We've finished round 2, so now let's vote on the worst of the losers. Some of these guys only won because their opponent really sucked, so who's the worst of the disqualified contestants?

We watched RLMs gorilla interrupted, and the very obvious question came up of
"Who's Garret Gilchrist?"
I couldn't figure it out last time around, but Kat did some googeling and found out that he went on to create one of the most important film preservation efforts in animation

Just watched The Thief and the Cobbler: The Recobbled Cut again. I still stand by the opinion that it's the greatest animated film of all time, tied with Fantasia. It's in my Top 10 favorite films easily. An absolute masterpiece that needs to be seen by film-goers, film buffs, and animation enthusiasts everywhere.

Fun fact time! The Thief and the Cobbler was supposed to be the magnum opus of Richard Williams an acclaimed director best known for his animated works in who framed Roger Rabbit (he voiced Droopy in that movie as well!).
The movie took 30 years or so to be developed but it was cutoff from being finished and pasted together by a third party and sold in not one but two different versions than the intended version Richard wanted to commit to history.
It doesn't quite end there though. Orange Cow Productions gathered some of the original prints, scans, and other various details that went into the production of the Thief and the Cobbler and removed many of the dubs and edits by the other companies and put it together as a closest approximation of the original Thief and the Cobbler as it was intended to be seen.
This version has been named the Re-cobbled Cut. You can't purchase it anywhere but it is one of those things you can Torrent and various versions of it exists on the youtube account Thethiefarchive. On that channel you'll see many more things that Richard Williams created in his long history of being an animator.
TheThiefarchive and the company Orange Cow Productions is owned by Garret Gilchrist. Garret is a minor filmmaker who makes or acts in mostly micro-budget productions one of which went by the name Gorilla Interrupted which starred him and Mike Stoklasa from Redlettermedia.
My new plan for you all is to show you some more stuff related to Redlettermedia but also show off some stuff regarding Richard Williams and Garret Gilchrist.
I hope that's okay with you.

I'm working on a film restoration, expensively. With a few people. We've been meaning to do this for awhile. (Well, a couple of film restorations but this one in particular.)
An earlier (dirtier) restoration of it leaked (which also contains footage from a much earlier version we did)
There was a comment somewhere, in a community which hates me for made-up reasons,
along the lines of:
"This is crazy and amazing, thank you to whichever one of you did this, you've done more for this film than Garret Gilchrist ever could" I’m Garrett Gilchrist.
This is pretty much how things go for me on the internet these days.

What do you mean this isn't the teaser scene at the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy? Howard the Duck is there and everything!
