Zoos waren im deutschen Kolonialsystem ein Raum, in dem Tiere und Menschen gleichzeitig exotisiert wurden, dazu wurden Menschen aus afrikanischen Ländern unter sehr schlechten Arbeitsbedingungen angestellt dem Bild von exotischer Fremdheit/Wildheit entsprechend aufzutreten. Ein weiterer Schauplatz dieser Darstellungen waren die Kolonialausstellungen, auf der zum Beispiel 1896 im Berliner Treptower Park ein Ausstellungs-Dorf eingerichtet wurde. Die zu dieser Zeit in Berlin reisende Diplomatengruppe der Herero weigerte sich in Tracht aufzutreten und performte in klassischen Herrenanzügen. Das Gemälde “In der Tierbude” von 1891, von Paul Meyerheim, einem der berühmtesten Maler Berlins im 19. Jahrhundert, zeigt eine schwarze Person die in exotisierender Tracht ein Krokodil hält, während ein Dompteur in Arbeitskleidung die Vorstellung leitet. Das Bild ist im Besitz der Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden in der Galerie Neue Meister, erworben wurde es 1894 direkt vom Künstler. In der Nationalgalerie Berlin befand sich ein im zweiten Weltkrieg verlorenes Gegenstück von 1885, auch hier ist eine schwarze Person in exotisierender Kleidung zwischen den Tieren zu sehen. In der Berliner Nationalgalerie wird heute nur noch eine Zirkusvorstellung mit einem Affen und einem Elefanten von Meyerheim ausgestellt, ein Anblick an den man so gewohnt ist, dass einem der Bezug zum Kolonialismus wohl gar nicht mehr auffällt.

Ein Millionärsport

Ein gesetzwidriger, aber mit größtem Eifer betriebener Sport der amerikanischen Millionärinnen ist das Schmuggeln. Niemand bereitet an der Zollabfertigungsstelle in New York den Beamten so viel Ärger und Arbeit als gerade die reichsten der Yankeedamen, die auf die raffinierteste Art und durch stets neue Tricke die Zollbehörde zu hintergehen suchen. Dieser stete Kampf zwischen weiblicher Verschlagenheit und den wachsamen Zöllnern hat schließlich zu Maßnahmen geführt, die sich bei all ihrer Kostspieligkeit bisher als recht einträglich erwiesen haben. An allen europäischen Hafenplätzen, von denen die Ozeandampfer abgehen, unterhält nämlich die amerikanische Behörde eine Menge von Spionen unter der Maske von Hotelangestellten und Kommissionären, ebenso befinden sich auch unter dem Personal der Schiffe selbst stets einige Aufpasser, die darauf achtgeben, wie viel zollpflichtiges Gut die Reisenden mit sich führen. Nur auf diese Weise ist es möglich, dem Schmuggel, wie ihn die stets mit einem Berg von Riesenkoffern reisenden Millionärinnen betreiben, auf die Spur zu kommen. –

Vor kurzem hatte die Zollstation in New York davon Wind bekommen, daß Frau Webster, die Gattin eines vielfachen Millionärs und Besitzers großer Maschinenfabriken, in Brüssel einen Perlenschmuck von ungeheurem Wert erstanden hatte. Als der von Frau Webster benützte Dampfer in New York anlangte, erkundigten sich die Beamten daher teilnehmend, ob die Dame nicht auch den Perlenschmuck verzollen wolle. Sie besäße keinen derartigen Schmuck, erwiderte die elegante Frau; man solle nur ruhig ihr ganzes Gepäck durchstöbern.

Natürlich wurden die Perlen nicht gefunden.

Aber die Zöllner sind ebenso gründliche wie rücksichtslose Leute. Die Dame wurde in ein Zimmer geführt und mußte sich dort eine genaue Leibesuntersuchung gefallen lassen, die von einer älteren Frau vorgenommen ward. Der Perlenschmuck fand sich auch wirklich. Die Millionärin hatte ihn in ihrer hochgetürmten Frisur versteckt und sicherlich gehofft, [221] ihn dort vor allen neugierigen Blicken aufs beste verborgen zu haben. Und das Ende der Geschichte waren 25.000 Dollar Strafe, die Frau Webster lachend aufzählte mit der Bemerkung, sie habe nun auch noch 20.000 für eine verlorene Wette zu zahlen.

Ähnlich ging’s Frau Lindsey, deren Gatte gleichfalls zu den oberen Zehntausend von New York gehört. Frau Lindsey hatte in Amsterdam, dem berühmtesten Diamantenmarkt, eine Anzahl Edelsteine erworben, um sie daheim zu einer Halskette vereinigen zu lassen. Noch im letzten Augenblick wurde dies der Zollbehörde bekannt. Aber die Dame leugnete, Brillanten bei sich zu haben. Man durchforschte aufmerksam die Koffer, und ein besonders findiger Beamter fand hierbei einige Schachteln mit Pillen, die nach der Aufschrift auf dem Deckel ein Mittel gegen Migräne darstellten. Leider waren die Pillen unverhältnismäßig groß geraten, und dies war Frau Lindseys Pech. Man zerschnitt die Pillen eine nach der anderen, und siehe da: die Hälfte von ihnen enthielt Diamanten, die zusammen einen Wert von 50.000 Dollar hatten. Der Schmuggelsport kam der Dame recht teuer zu stehen: sie zahlte nicht weniger als 21.000 Dollar Strafe.

Berühmt geworden ist auch der Etagenkoffer der Frau Chesbrough, einer vielfachen Millionärin. Von einer Reise nach Europa brachte sie diesen mit drei Etagen versehenen Riesenkoffer mit und erklärte sich ohne Zögern bereit, den Inhalt: Hüte, Pariser Roben und Wäsche zu verzollen. Der Beamte, der die Dame abfertigte, gehörte jedoch zu jenen unangenehmen Menschen, die allen Dingen auf den Grund zu gehen pflegen. Er maß den Innenraum des Koffers genau aus und stellte so fest, daß das innere und äußere Maß um 15 Zentimeter voneinander abwichen. Damit nicht genug, nahm er noch ein Stemmeisen und brach den Boden des Reisebehälters auf, was zur Folge hatte, daß in dem schlau angebrachten Versteck eine Menge des feinsten Pelzwerks zum Vorschein kam. Trotzdem behielt Frau Chesbrough ihre ganze Kaltblütigkeit bei. Sie spielte die Erstaunte und erklärte, sie habe den Koffer in Paris gekauft und wisse gar nicht, daß der heimliche Raum existiere; wie die Pelzwaren hineingelangt seien, könne sie erst recht nicht angeben. Aber die Zollbeamten waren unhöflich genug, ihr dies Märchen nicht zu glauben. Man telegraphierte auf ihre Kosten nach Paris an das Koffergeschäft, und die Antwort fiel natürlich derart aus, daß nichts mehr die Millionärin von der Strafe wegen versuchter Zollhinterziehung retten konnte.

Ein anderes Mal wieder wurde der Zollbehörde in New York durch einen ihrer Spione hinterbracht, daß eine Frau Wenterley auf einer Auktion in Paris einen echten Rubens erstanden habe. Bei der Zollrevision aber war das Gemälde nirgends zu finden. Man suchte stundenlang, Frau Wenterley stand mit einem maliziösen Lächeln dabei und schaute ruhig zu, wie man ihr Gepäck stets aufs neue durchwühlte und die Koffer nach verborgenen Fächern abklopfte. Schon wollten die Beamten das Spiel aufgeben, als plötzlich einer von ihnen die siegesgewisse Dame bat, ihren modernen Riesenhut doch einmal abzunehmen. Frau Wenterley machte Ausflüchte. Es half aber nichts, der Hut wurde ihr abgenommen und untersucht. Der findige Beamte hatte auch das Richtige getroffen: in dem runden, 35 Zentimeter breiten Hutboden war unter dem Seidenfutter der Rubens fein säuberlich eingenäht. Erfolg: 18.000 Dollar Strafe.

Interessant ist auch der Fall Gardner. Frau Gardner gehört zu den vornehmsten Damen der Gesellschaft von Boston und ist eine eifrige Sammlerin von berühmten Gemälden. Der Zollbehörde fiel es auf, daß im Laufe weniger Monate eine ganze Anzahl von ziemlich wertlosen Gemälden für Frau Gardner eintraf. Man wußte, daß die Dame früher nur seltene alte Meister eingeführt hatte, und konnte sich die plötzliche Schwärmerei für derartige Dutzendware, wie sie jetzt stets von Frau Gardner verzollt wurde, nicht recht erklären. Eines Tages kam wieder eine Kiste an. Wieder enthielt sie ein Bild, das ein sachverständiger Beamter auf kaum 50 Dollar abschätzte. In dem Bureau der Zollbehörde besprach man nun abermals diese immerhin auffallenden Bildersendungen und beschloß dann, einen Agenten nach Boston zu senden, um nach dem Verbleib dieser Durchschnittsgemälde forschen zu lassen, da man nicht annehmen konnte, Frau Gardner würde derartige Stücke ihrer Galerie einverleiben.

Auf diese Weise kam endlich die Wahrheit ans Tageslicht: die Dame hatte in Europa wertvolle alte Meister von einem Maler durch ein besonderes Verfahren überpinseln und auf diesen Überzug ein neues Bild malen lassen. Die so verdeckten Gemälde passierten natürlich für wenige Dollar die Zollgrenze. In Boston wurden sie dann von dem Überzuge wieder befreit und schmückten in alter Schönheit die Wände des Gardnerschen Palastes.

Der Spaß kostete der erfindungsreichen Millionärin nur 92.000 Dollar nachträglichen Zoll und 200.000 Dollar Strafe, die sie lachend bezahlte.
