A true general store at the Port of Middlesex
By Jonathan Monfiletto

Call it Willow Point, call it Vine Valley, even call it the Port of Middlesex – the Robeson General Store, today known as the Vine Valley General Store, has been a fixture and a landmark here for more than 120 years. The landscape and the clientele have changed in those six-score-plus-eight years since the building went up; what hasn’t changed in that time is the small-town, community-centered feel of a local business.
Charles Abram Robeson – or just Charles, or Charles A., or C.A., depending on which newspaper article you are reading at which point in time – was just 20 years old when in 1898 he opened the store that became Robeson General Store. The building itself was just 3 years old, having been built in 1895, when Robeson first rented the business from George Green. Though barely out of his teenage years, C.A. already had experience working in a store, having worked for his brother-in-law Laverne Fitzwater in a store in Italy Hill.
Robeson had grown up in Jerusalem, one of seven children born to George Robeson and Nancy Henderson, and lived there during his boyhood. His experience with Fitzwater “fired (him) with the ambition to own a store of his own,” according to an article in The Chronicle-Express of May 11, 1950. Through another brother-in-law, Charles LaDue, Robeson learned of Green’s store in Vine Valley. Becoming a business owner turned him into not only a valued member of the community but also, apparently, a ladies’ man with several options to choose from.
“The advent of a young, good-looking, and independent business man in the community aroused the usual curiosity among young ladies,” the 1950 article states, namely Ellen and Adelia Hixson and a friend, Nettie Mertz, who “decided to visit the store and inspect the new proprietor.” However, neither the customers nor the storekeeper knew what to do in that situation, and the girls ended up buying three pounds of raisins for their aunt – only to realize later their aunt did not need raisins at all.
That meeting did produce fruit beyond the bulk portion of dried grapes; C.A. began a courtship with Ellen – one of two daughters of Foster Amos Hixson and Caroline Harkness, born and raised on the family’s Vine Valley farm on the east shore of Canandaigua Lake – and the two married a little more than a year later, both of them 21 years old. Their wedding took place in the Hixson home, and the couple made their own home there as well. While C.A. continued to operate the store, Ellen took care of the home and raised their four children, sons Walter, Carl, and Charles Jr., and daughter Caroline (or Carolyn or Carol, in various articles), who helped her father in the store and eventually took over the family business.
After nearly 50 years of running the store and literally overseeing the eastern shore of Canandaigua Lake from Vine Valley – on Willow Point, at the Port Middlesex – Robeson looked back on the changes he and his business had seen during that tenure, in a November 28, 1946 article in The Chronicle-Express. The bulk of trade took place during the fall season, as grocery items for Middlesex and Potter Center came in the port by boat and were hauled away by wagon. Conversely, farmers who had harvested their grapes sent their shipments of pony baskets away aboard the Onalinda, Ogarita, or Oriana – the three main steamships that cruised Canandaigua Lake at the time.
At the time, Vine Valley was quite the commercial center. Aside from Robeson, Theodore McCombs served as postmaster and handled the mail that also came in by boat from the lake and the Hawleys ran a summer hotel. “There were no cottages beneath the spreading willows and the shoreline was set solid with well tended vineyards,” the 1946 article states, with Robeson observing there was probably 10 times as much land in vineyards at the beginning of his career as there was almost a half century later.
More observing and not necessarily complaining, the storeowner saw vineyards grown up to brush and berry bushes and lake frontage sold to cottage owners. Rather than the fall, the bulk of the business in the mid-1940s took place in the summer months and during various fishing seasons – “for one of the best trout and pike grounds in Canandaigua lake lies just off Willow Point,” the 1946 article states while adding, “About 75 per cent of the summer trade is by cottagers, transients and week-enders.”
Early on, aside from the staple groceries – crackers produced in Canandaigua, bread baked in Geneva, all kinds of spices, lard, eggs, butter, and more – there was kerosene brought in by wagon, over the ice of the lake in wintertime, through the mud in spring, and through the dust in summer. The store also sold lumber, boots, shoes, fresh vegetables, and hardware supplies, and later on it offered shoe polish, boxed cereal, candy, bread, fruit, cookies, ice cream, and soda pop. Robeson died January 19, 1960 at age 81, still operating his store at the time and having lived on the Hixson homestead since his marriage; Ellen lived for 11 more years and died November 12, 1971 at age 92.
While Ellen headed the store following C.A.’s death and until her own death, it was their daughter – listed as Carolyn Robeson Underwood in her obituary – who took over the store from that point until the family sold the business in 1984. After Robeson General Store closed, the Town of Middlesex purchased the building and lakefront property for use as a public beach. After extensive renovation work, including repairs to the foundation and roof, upgrades to the electrical wiring, and exterior painting, the town offered the building for lease in February 1991 to anyone wishing to operate it as a seasonal general store.
In June 2018, Fred and Beth Muller announced they had leased the building from the Town of Middlesex and planned to re-establish the Robeson General Store as the Vine Valley General Store. Their store continues to serve the lakeshore community of Vine Valley on a seasonal basis.

#tbt to revisiting the quirky hamlet on the Ohio River known as Rabbit Hash, Kentucky. I used to come here to buy Ale-8's on my breaks at Camp Ernst and watch the riverboats roll by. This spot is famous for its long line of dog mayors, starting with a dog named Goofy Borneman-Calhoun in 1998. The 1831 @rabbithashgeneralstore burned down and was rebuilt in 2016. This was my first time back since the reopening and we enjoyed some pralines and live bluegrass music, as part of Old Timers' Day.
