Basically my stance on assembling flat-packed furniture is that assembling furniture made of real wood can be fun, but assembling furniture made of laminated particle board is pure hell.

With real wood, you have ample margin for error – getting something backwards or mixing up two similar pieces isn’t a big deal, because you can always just back up and try again. It’s durable, and often explicitly designed for repeated assembly and disassembly.

With laminated particle board, every error is a potentially show-stopping disaster, because it’s really not designed to survive having the locking bolts tightened more than once. Every time beyond the first that you loosen and re-tighten the stupid things you’re risking permanent damage, and load-bearing particle board is essentially impossible to repair once it’s broken. I’d say it’s like assembling furniture made of glass, but I’ve actually assembled furniture made of glass, and it’s a heck of a lot less fraught than particle board!
