Recensione: OWC Mercury Elite Pro Qx2, un case RAID solido, veloce e multipiattaforma

In questi anni con il Mac Pro mi sono trovato discretamente bene con l'archiviazione via Thunderbolt, ma ho avuto anche alcuni problemi. Il primo è più importante è che la quantità di dati che mi serve e la necessità di backup, mi ha portato ad avere la scrivania ricolma di dispositivi, cavi e necessarie alimentazioni su UPS. Il secondo è che mi è capitato in un dato momento di avere il Mac Pro in assistenza e con il MacBook 12" non riuscivo ad accedere ai dati tramite la sola porta USB-C. Ora si sta facendo avanti proprio quest'ultima soluzione e ci sono dei case esterni che la supportano ed hanno il comodo RAID 5, ma non li potrei collegare al Mac Pro. Con la Thunderbolt 3 la situazione non sembra migliore e i limiti di compatibilità aumenterebbero, per cui ho deciso di cambiare completamente tutto. Il primo passaggio con il mio #ProgettoWin sarà quello di avere i dati dei lavori in corso su SSD interni in RAID, così da non avere altri ingombri. Per lo storage personale e di famiglia ho deciso di affidarmi ad un NAS di QNAP (la recensione arriverà tra qualche giorno se siete interessati), ma avevo comunque bisogno di mettere almeno 8 TB di progetti archiviati in un posto in cui fossero al sicuro ed accessibili velocemente da qualsiasi piattaforma. Visto che tanto di dischi meccanici si parla e che la velocità auspicabile sarà comunque inferiore a quella della banda USB 3, ho deciso di testare un case di OWC adatto allo scopo, il Mercury Elite Pro Qx2.

Si tratta di un alloggiamento con 4 bay per unità da 3,5 (o 2,5" con adattatori) SATA III, il quale offre connettività USB 3.1 Gen 1, Firewire 800 (che ormai non mi serve più, ma tant'è) ed anche la eSATA. Quest'ultima su Mac non è facilissima da usare (alcuni adattatori che ho provato io non funzionano) ma è un di più che può essere comodo per un accesso RAW da Windows o Linux, mentre la USB 3.1 è la connessione che intendo usare e la cui banda eccede ampiamente quella necessara per questa configurazione.

Come per gli altri prodotti di OWC, ci troviamo di fronte ad una eccellente costruzione ed a materiali di prima scelta, che ha anche il vantaggio di essere piuttosto compatto contenendo 4 dischi 3,5" e l'alimentatore in 24,5 x 13,5 x 17,7 cm. Pesa, perché è tutto in metallo, e il design industriale mi è piaciuto molto, riportandomi alla mente i fasti del glorioso Mac Pro (non quello di ora). La dotazione di serie comprende il cavo di alimentazione schuko, cavi eSATA, USB 3, Firewire, diverse viti per fissare i dischi ed una coppia di chiavi di sicurezza. Nota negativa il cavo USB di soli 50cm...

Per questa prova l'ho scelto 4 dischi da 3TB di Toshiba a 7200rpm, i quali si installano agevolmente nei cassetti dedicati. Ogni elemento combacia perfettamente, ma essendo tutto metallo può capitare di dover forzare leggermente.

Per il settaggio del controller RAID vi è un selettore fisico sopra i cassetti dei dischi, il quale può essere impostato su queste modalità:

0 = RAID 0

1 = RAID 1/10

2 = SPAN

3 = RAID 5

4 = IND

Ogni cambiamento causerà la perdita dei dati, per cui bisogna andarci cauti, ma ovviamente non è un problema nella prima attivazione con i dischi vergini. Una volta impostato il selettore sulla modalità desiderata (nel mio caso 3: RAID 5), occorre tenere premuto il tastino Confirm con un oggetto appuntito (una spilletta togli SIM è perfetta) e contemporaneamente accendere il case con il pulsate posto sul retro.

I LED lampeggeranno per meno di un minuto fino al completamente dell'operazione. A quel punto tutte le spie dei dischi devono essere di colore verde e quella power azzurra. La rumorosità in queste fasi è di circa 33dB, parte dei quali dovuti alla ventola posteriore. Tuttavia questa è un'unità standard da 92x92x25mm (fd129225lb-n), per cui conto di sostituirla al più presto con una Noctua NF-A9 o simili, che scommetto si riveleranno molto più silenziose.

Il computer riconoscerà un volume unico avendo impostato il RAID 5, poiché tutta la gestione è adibita al controller interno dell'Elite Pro QX2. Con 4 dischi da 3TB la capacità complessiva sarà ovviamente di 9TB, con parità distribuita equamente su tutti. Il sistema è operativo e i dati al sicuro fintanto che sono funzionanti N dischi meno 1, che nel caso di specie significa almeno 3 dei 4 totali. Se uno di questi si corrompe è possibile sostituirlo, sempre con una unità identica (o quasi), e il RAID verrà automaticamente ricostruito. Un risultato simile in termini di sicurezza si sarebbe ottenuto con il RAID 1+0, ma la capacità si sarebbe ridotta ad N/2 (per cui 6TB invece di 9).

Per quanto riguarda il file system ho scelto di utilizzare ExFAT, in quanto non possiede i limiti del FAT32 ma è leggibile ormai quasi universalmente da Windows, macOS e Linux. Volendo si può anche partizionare in più volumi logici in base alle proprie esigenze, tanto i dischi vengono riconosciuti dal computer come fossero uno solo, riducendo al minimo la complessità dovuta alla gestione. All'interno della confezione si trova un piccolo foglietto di carta molto importante, che ci ricorda di registrare il prodotto per ricevere un bundle di software di gestione composto da Intech SpeedTools e Prosoft Data Backup per Mac o NovaStor Backup per Windows.

Intech è nota ai più per Quickbench, ma il kit OEM SpeedTools in dotazione è davvero ricco e comprende un sistema di monitoraggio dello stato di salute dei dischi, il test delle performance e diverse utility per l'analisi e la risoluzione di eventuali problemi. In scrittura sequenziale il sistema RAID così composto raggiunge i 250MB/s in lettura e si attesta su una media di circa 240MB/s in scrittura.

Ovviamente nel random può essere parecchio più lento per via della natura dei dischi meccanici, però va comunque meglio delle mie precedenti coppie di dischi in RAID stripe via Thunderbolt.

Il risultato è davvero ottimo se si considera che si sta sfruttando la maggior parte della capienza reale e si possiede anche un discreto margine di sicurezza. In genere è difficile che due dischi si rompano contemporaneamente (l'unico modo per rimanere a piedi con questa soluzione), soprattutto quando il totale è di soli quattro, ma tenete sempre a mente che un RAID 5 è uno strumento efficiente ma non quanto delle buone politiche di manutenzione e sicurezza.

Conviene quindi usare l'app per il monitoraggio continuo dello stato S.M.A.R.T. e, possibilmente, avere una ulteriore copia dei dati più importanti in luogo separato. Anche se non aggiornata con frequenza continua, è sempre meglio che trovarsi di punto in bianco senza neanche uno straccio dei nostri dati. Una possibilità è quella di acquistare periodicamente dei dischi esterni, riempirli e lasciarli in una seconda casa o da un familiare. Vi potrebbe sembrare di buttare soldi, ma consideratelo alla stregua di uno dei tanti dispositivi di sicurezza che siete ben disposti a pagare per la casa o l'auto.

Conclusione

L'unico neo che ho riscontrato nell'OWC Mercury ElitePro Qx2 è la rumorosità. E non tanto quella legata all'operatività sui dischi, perché mi sembra di capire che il colpevole principale sia la ventola posteriore, che infatti cambierò a breve. Attualmente si attesta su circa 30dB in stand-by, che nel mio studio sembrano tanti visto che sia il Mac Pro che il computer del #ProgettoWin sono praticamente inudibili. Per il resto ho potuto apprezzare una costruzione eccellente, un settaggio molto semplice e ottima velocità del controller via USB 3.1. In questo periodo in cui non si capisce davvero quale sarà lo standard per l'archiviazione un prodotto del genere è una sicurezza, perché lo si può usare ovunque senza limitazioni. Anche se tutti i computer di qui in avanti fossero USB-C, basterà un comune adattatore per risolvere, mentre non è quasi mai vero il contrario. Inoltre ho apprezzato molto i software in dotazione, che di solito tendo a scartare in quanto scadenti, mentre qui il pacchetto è ricco e molto utile anche per altri dischi. I 365€ richiesti per l'acquisto su MacShop sono assolutamente giustificati dalla qualità offerta. Un NAS in questa fascia di prezzo fornisce una flessibilità maggiore per chi ricerca funzionalità aggiuntive, ma non raggiunge che 1/3 di questa velocità via Ethernet. Lo sottolineo solo perché qualcuno potrebbe tentare un confronto tra i due prodotti, ma sarebbe un grosso errore perché sono destinati ad usi completamente diversi.
