What is an Auto Transformer?

An auto transformer uses a single coil that acts as both the primary and secondary windings to regulate voltage. And therefore, there is no direct current (DC) isolation between the primary and secondary circuits, contrary to traditional transformers with two-windings. The prevention of DC from flowing between the input and output circuits is known as DC isolation.

Much like isolation transformers, auto transformers send electrical energy from one circuit to another while adjusting the voltage. However, the windings in isolation transformers are not electrically connected.

Advantages of Auto Transformers

Compared to a two-winding transformer of a similar capacity, an auto-transformer which is a single-winding transformer, requires less copper.

This single-winding transformer also offers higher efficiency than the transformer with two-windings.

The auto transformer regulates voltage levels better than a two-winding transformer of the same rating.

It is smaller and compact than traditional two-winding transformers.

Unlike two-winding transformers, the auto transformer can operate at a smaller exciting current.

Disadvantages

Contrary to traditional transformers, where isolation of direct current is possible due to the lack of physical contact between the primary and secondary windings, there is no room for DC isolation in auto transformers, posing safety concerns in some applications.

The autotransformer is not ideal for converting a high voltage to a low voltage because of lack of DC isolation. Because of the single winding, a fault in the low-voltage side can cause trouble in the high-voltage side and vice versa. This can lead to severe shock hazards.

In auto transformers, the short-circuit current is significantly higher than the standard transformer of the same capacity. During short-circuits, the secondary winding can cause short-circuit in the primary winding as well, resulting in reduced resistivity and reactance in the circuit.

I like to think that when they get startled, they’d instinctively transform into their alt modes like turtles or pangolins cuz they’re much more compact and sturdy and smaller targets 😌 also maybe possibly I am secretly a sucker for bloominglegumes’s jazterwave stuff so I wanted to make something with them too 🙄 but I’ll never tell.
