So, I wanna make an analysis video of Auf Wiedersehen Sweetheart and it’s significance in not just the Hetalia fandom, but also in fanfiction in general. Does anyone have any advice as to how to make it good/resources I could use to research the fic?

It's been almost a decade now and I didn't try to look for the fics after the account was deleted. Still, I remember so vividly the emotions I felt while reading those precious works of art and overall a powerful message that conveys me through life: hope

I won’t lie. Rereading “We’ll Meet Again” by George deValier after so many years was quite the experience. Particularly now that I’m older than George’s Arthur.

Out of the entire Veraverse, I still believe that “We’ll Meet Again” was George’s best.

It’s the story of a young and overly-optimistic American fighter pilot and a lonely, “know-better-than” British pub owner picking up the pieces of their lives in the wake of war and their loss of innocence.

War brings them together then wrests them apart, only for their love to bring them together again.

If I remember correctly, George’s portrayal of Alfred and Arthur in WMA was one of the reasons why my teenager-self started shipping them in the first place (in addition to General Kitty Girl and StarDropDream’s fics). There was also the Rockets comic by Hakuku and Ronbinrocks, but that story is for another time.

A single paragraph of George’s packs the action of a short novel. Their narration is dynamic, fast-paced and “jumpy.” George was so good at scattering seemingly unimportant details that later clicked and fell into place. Or how they orchestrated situations that enabled characters which belonged to different fics to meet and save each other. One of my favorite examples of this is Ludwig’s capture in chapter 5, which binds the plots of WMA and “Auf Wiedersehen Sweetheart” together.

There are some lines in WMA that I will never forget, like:

(1) “Hey, Arthur. If we’re dreaming… let’s not wake up.”

(2) “I was in a good mood that night. I’d just fallen in love.”

(3) “I like that,” said Alfred, staring at Arthur.

“What?” asked Arthur huffily. How bloody irritating that he could not even control his facial expressions around the American. “When you smile.”

The friendship between Alfred and Francis is so heartwarming to read every time. The scene where they race in their wheelchairs in the hospital ward never fails to make me smile.

Also, the innuendos at the beginning of the third chapter…George definitely knew what they were doing!

I wouldn’t say that the rest of the Veraverse fics made an impression on me, but I do wish they’d have finished writing “Lily of the Lamplight” at least. The first chapter sounded so promising.

And with this I promise I finish — something that I’ve noticed during my extensive time in the fandom is that most people can write Alfred fairly well from the start.

Yes, some fan writers only scratch the surface and limit his character to this boisterous young man with a hero complex, but I think most of them do a fairly good job.

I like to call him the trial and error character. He’s enjoyable and less intimidating to write.

there's this fanfiction that I'm super obsessed over that will never be finished. it's Catch Perfect by the (in?)famous George Devalier. yes it's a Hetalia fanfic please shame me, it's probably my subconscious reason for taking geography in college. anyways this fic... god I would give the world to see it finished. many praise Devalier's veraverse fics as his finest works but this one for some reason is so special to me.

I think what's so special about this fic to me is how sincere it feels? how real it feels? the veraverse series was the author's interpretation, their assumption about how gay couples in europe would be like in WW2 - obviously they weren't there for the actual thing. but his modern AU fics feel... tangible. a real "write what you know" situation. the author was probably a young, gay man who was into romcom, you could really feel that he wrote from his own experiences, from people he knew (although he never explicitly said anything about himself, geogre devalier is notoriously mysterious even as one of the most fanous hetalia fandom figures).

and when you read this fic, analogizing it to let's say a half eaten corpse, only part of the body is whole. but you can see the bones of it! every chapter is titled after poker terminology and strategy, and they kind of link to each of the main character's personalities and you could guess that they potentially foreshadow something. you could tell which body part went where! and it kills you even more because you want to see so bad what the whole body looked like. you are able to tell where the arc is going, probably figure out that it'll have a happy, cheesy ending like his other modern AU fics but you want to hear geogre write about it so bad.

it's about human!Sweden, a tapped out poker player who is forced to move into a student sharehouse (with the rest of the Scandinavia gang) because he lost his entire everything on poker (he is also the age of a uni student, but he doesn't go to uni). and it's this fic about 5 gay guys (and 2 other guys) living in one house and hijinks ensue, mostly around their own crazy personalities. i love how gay it is, it isn't just some "they just happened to be gay" or being gay is just not a thing that's just there in the world. there's these hints of homophobia as experienced by these men in the 2000s (presumably), there's the gay culture written out, it's just a real treat to read. if i had the time and energy i would research poker just so i could finish the fic for myself even though that wouldn't be enough because i know anything i write will be leagues below devalier

I remember when I pranked the hetalia fandom for all of two days by pretending to be george devalier and writing a shitpost fanfiction (“Land of Hope and Glory”) where I just copy-pasted inspirational quotes and write down stuff and hopes to God some guy would take it seriously and quote it

Either way if people fell for it and are mad at me I am legit sorry because I realize how big it must’ve been.

nothing beats the nostalgia of rereading one of your favorite fan-works and then crying real tears when you realise that its almost completely likely that its never going to be updated.

tbh i just hope this man is well, wherever he is. cause hes one of the only reasons why im still in this fandom.
