1. Based on your previous readings, identify a topic that you would want to work on a thesis.

The topic that the proponent came up with after the previous readings was ‘Smart Garbage Bins or USeP’ that can detect the overflow of waste materials in the garbage bins located at USeP which can be monitored on the phone web browser of the janitors via internet. The proposed tittle aims to determine and segregate waste materials from degradable and non-degradable.

The selected journals follow a certain outline, starting from introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, conclusion, and acknowledgements and references. Each paper may have an architectural framework of the system or a flow chart. The selected papers also presented figures of the devices and materials that will be used. Sample data can also be found from each paper from their developed prototype.

The following are the terms and concepts which were unknown to the blogger which are therefore defined:

1. GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) - is a digital mobile telephony system which uses variation of time division multiple access (TDMA). GSM digitizes and compresses data, then sends it down a channel with two other streams of user data, each in its own time slot [1].

Creator Eben Upton's aimed to create a low-cost device that would improve programming skills and hardware understanding at the pre-university level [3].

4. Infrared Sensor - An infrared sensor is an electronic instrument used to sense certain characteristics of its surroundings by either emitting and/or detecting infrared radiation. Infrared sensors are also capable of measuring the heat being emitted by an object and detecting motion. Thermal and Quantum infrared sensors are the two main types of infrared sensors [4].

5. Arduino - is an open-source platform used for building electronics projects. Arduino consists of both a microcontroller and an IDE that runs on your computer to write and upload computer code to the physical board. Additionally, the Arduino IDE uses a simplified version of C++ [5].

“Implementation of the above smart bin can prevent lumping of the trash for a longer period of time thereby preventing the widespread of diseases to a great extent and promising a clean environment in the city [41, 8].” – as this statement is one of the major objectives of the proposed paper, this claim adequately supports the implementation of the system and its underlying good outcomes.

2. IoT-Based Smart Garbage System for Efficient Food Waste Management

“The term Internet of Things was introduced by Kevin Ashton, who was the director of the Auto-ID Center of MIT in 1999 [42, 9].” – the author cited the introduction of internet of things (IoT) as its basic idea were primarily discussed.

“For IoT applications performing these functions, a variety of researches on IoT services including environmental monitoring [42, 10, 11], object tracking [42, 12], traffic management [42, 13], health care [42, 14], and smart home technology [42, 15, 16] are being conducted.” – this claim fully utilized today’s technology, particularly IoT devices which insinuated the pursue of this proposal.

5. IoT Based Smart Garbage and Waste Collection Bin

“A review on Internet of Things gave the idea of IoT subject and addition details about IoT. The proper smart environment and various applications [45, 28].”

“A study by Arkady Zaslavsky, Dimitrios Georgakopoulos. This paper gave us the details about mobile analysis and sensor information management helped in data segregation of various dustbins [45, 29].”

9. Smart Garbage Management System

“Government of India have struggled for years to find a way to manage the country’s ever-increasing amount of trash [49, 39].” – this claim was proved by the author through laying these sentences: “According to the survey carried out in 1994 the garbage produced in Mumbai is 5800 tons per day. Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) operates a huge fleet of 983 Municipal and Private Vehicles for collection of waste making 1396 number of trips each day. Solid Waste Management (SWM) expenditure outlay in the year 2007-08 is Rs.10479.3 Million.”

“A GSM Module is connected to the computer of the control room through microcontroller [49, 40].” – this statement is very well supported by an existing system as to how the model of this system is devised.

10.  Smart Trash Can Using Internet of Things

“With the existence of many diseases in our Nation, the open containers are proving to be a breeding place for germs [50].” – this claim was countered by how municipalities operate on weekly routes to pick up waste in the garbage bins on designated days. This supporting text was again countered by this phrase; “but regardless of whether the containers are full or not, municipalities collect waste on designated days” which clearly showed the need for the modification of the existing waste management system.

“It will update the status of the trashcan to the Municipal so that the garbage will be cleaned earlier to the overflow stage [50].” – this statement is further supported by the technical capability of the three Infrared sensors to find the garbage level in the trashcan.

“The trashcan will have separate section for degradable and non-degradable wastes [50].” – such claim is supported by the use of the plate acting as a capacitive in determining non-degradable from degradable waste and vice versa. For instance, if an individual place the degradable waste, a motor will rotate the trashcan for degradable waste under the plate. Then the waste will fall on the correct section.

The Beginning

Since I was young, I have always been very focused on my studies because I really wanted to be a medical doctor and my dad used to tell me that the road to getting that “M.D.” will never be easy, that’s why I never wandered and gave most of my time on reading. Well, I also had my fun because I know it’s really unhealthy for a human being to not be able to go out and socialize. But most of my time, really, was spent on books and by books, I meant those educational books that the professors ask you to buy; those books required in a subject. That’s how desperate I was to be a medical doctor.

When I got in to my third year in highschool, I got really interested in arts and crafts. I was so obssessed to designing that when I got in to college, I enrolled myself in achitecture. I had a lot of options before entering the university like computer engineering, electronics and communications engineering, civil engineering and any medical course. I wasn’t very sure at that time what medical course specifically because my mind was totally focused on architecture. The engineerjng courses were just back-ups in case I fail in architecture. On the last month of my first semester in architecture, my body was really stressed out. I got really really thin because I wasn’t getting enough sleep and I couldn’t find time to eat because I have so many plates to finish. At school, lunch break became my nap time because it was the only time that when I have nothing to do. I love architecture. It’s fun and all but my body can only take that much. That’s why I decided to shift in a different course. I was going to pick the engineering options that I had but thought about it hard and imagined that the same things might happen to me and I was frightened by just the thought of it.

And so, I decided to go back and get that “M.D.” I tried enrolling to medical technology from a different university but the dean did not approve my request because one of my grades was not released yet. They wanted to see the complete list of my grades with everything passed. I got tired of waiting and that university was too far from my home, so I decided to enroll myself in biology, kn the same school where I took architecture.

Biology was a very rocky road. I had the best experiences of my life in that course especially when we go to different places. We don’t go to different places to visit. We go to places to do sampling. We had a lot of work to do but in everywhere we go, we never felt tired because we get to see the very relaxing view. Also in biology, I also had a lot of bad experiences like failed grades, rejection from a lot of people, failed relationships and so much more. Compared to when I was in architecture, I can definitely find time to sleep in biology because my father gave me tips on how to manage my studies. My father is a doctor (veterinarian) and he understands my transition from architecture to biology. In architecture, you don’t study that much. You apply what the professor has taught you during discussion to the plates that you will be making the whole night, and you’ll be fine. In biology, you have to memorize a lot and by a lot, I meant 4-5 reference books per subject and atleast 10 scientific articles towards the end of a semester because there will always be a mini-thesis, our ticket to passing a subject. The technique taught by my father was to always read what the teacher taught on that day, at night when I get home and do advance reading so that when the exams come, I don’t have to worry about cramming.

I studied hard in biology but I also had my fun. But, just like when I was in my elementary years, I was mostly in and seldom out. I only had one goal and that was to get that “M.D.” but then something happened..

On my second semester on my third year in biology, I realized that I only had interest in the cardiovascular system and nothing more. I would get very excited as we approach this topic and the rest of the topics, I’m just not down for. The reason for such interest was because I wanted to be a cardiovascular surgeon. I really loved how the heart the operated and how the arteries, veins, and capillaries are arranged in such manner. But I really do think it’s just bias. I thought about it hard for months and realized that, in order to be a good doctor, one must love everything about the human body, its parts, functions, physiology, and etc. I realized my true calling when I enrolled in developmental biology and comparative anatomy. I became so interested about the development of the teeth, which was the report assigned to me, and the different dentition of different species. I tried downloading pdfs and ebooks on dentistry and became so interested in it that I finished a total of 4 books until my last year in biology. I watched a ton of videos on extractions, implants, and so much more and got excited of the thought that I’ll be enrolling in dentistry and the videos that I watched will be what I’ll be doing in the future. It’s exciting!

The pressure got into me after I graduated. My classmates back in highschool are now having jobs and my parents are also trying to convince me to have one too because unfortunately at that time, my father got in to stroke. I didn’t want him to work for me and pay my tuition. I wanted to repay him with everything he had sacrificed for me. Every night I’d be crying because just when I finally knew what I really wanted, I couldn’t have it. My family is very important to me. If it means sacrificing my dreams, I would do for them. But my father saw how much I love dentistry and tried his very best to get back on his feet and told me one day, to go for it. I remembered the exact words “I will do my best to keep myself healthy. All I want for you is to be happy and nothing more. Do not worry about papa. I will be fine.”

And so here I am, enrolled in dentistry. My course, my choice.

Finding Answers Through Data Collection (RDL1 IV d-f)

Conducting an Interview An interview is “a purposive face-to-face encounter, usually between two parties (an interviewer and an interviewee), in order to exchange information” (Miranda-Plata, et al., 2006). (However, because of modern comunication technology, interviews can also be not "face-to-face". Interviews may be conducted over the telephone, chat, or video call.) The interview is one of the most common data-gathering techniques, and used in qualitative research (the other being the survey, used in quantitative research). “By talking to people who have the information [that] you need, you can enrich your knowledge about the topic you are working on”. An interview typically has three stages: the pre-interview stage, the interview proper, and the post-interview stage. The pre-interview stage 1. Determine the purpose of your interview. Determine the specific objectives in conducting your interview: What will you use the interview for? How will you use the information? 2. Research the topic. Read in order to gain background knowledge on your topic. This will help you to be able to ask the right questions. 3. Choose your interviewee. Determine who is/are the best people to interview. Determine their availability, their knowledge of the topic, and whether they may freely share the information that you need. 4. Prepare for the interview. Make arrangements for the interview, for example, a letter of request, a call to the interviewee's office, and recording equipment. 5. Prepare an interview guide. An interview guide is a research instrument (see previous lesson) that contains questions to be asked by the interviewer/researcher. Determine how to phrase the questions in order to extract the information that you need. The interview proper The interview proper has three basic parts: 1) the opening, 2) the body, and 3) the closing. 1. The opening. This is when the tone of the interview is set. Aim for a positive atmosphere right from the beginning. This will pave a smooth path for communication. Establish rapport, i.e, goodwill between you and your interviewee. Make a good impression. Also, set the foundation for the interview by a) introducing yourself/yourselves (“We are senior high school students conducting an interview for our Research subject”); b) stating your purpose ('We want to find out more about depression”, etc.) and c) describing what will be covered in the interview, including the topics (“We would like to talk about causes, symptoms, treatment, and prevention of malaria”), and time limit. 2. The body. This is the main part of the interview where you, the researchers, ask the questions. Remember that the prepared questions in the interview guide only serves as a guide and should not be seen as the only questions that may be asked during the interview. (See “Types of questions” below.) Your prepared list of questions should also not be see as the strict sequence that should be followed. Follow the interviewee's lead on where the discussion goes, and yet use your interview guide if the discussion get sidetracked. You must research this well. 3. The closing. Do not neglect the closing part of the interview. Aim to leave with a positive attitude to the interviewee. Signal the conclusion (“And for my/our final question...”). Provide a summary statement by reviewing the points that were discussed. Make sure that your interview notes are accurate. Finally, show appreciation and courtesy to your interviewee for the time and knowledge he or she has shared. The post-interview stage 1. Arrange for a follow-up session, if needed. Make your interviewee aware of his/her valuable contribution to your research. Maintain the goodwill that was established during the interview so that you will be able to arrange a follow-up session in case you need to clarify some information pertinent to your research. 2. Prepare the interview report. Sort through the information gathered during the interview. Identify the information need for your research. Recall the purpose for conducting the interview. Make sure that you present different perspectives on the topic at hand. (See “Writing Chapter IV: Results and Discussion” below.) Types of Interview Questions 1. Open-ended questions are broad questions which can be answered freely by the interviewee: “How did you get started with your business?” “How would you describe your dream job?” 2. Close-ended questions call for restricted answers, i.e., specific answers: “How many languages do you speak?” “Do you agree with amending the Constitution?” 3. Primary questions are those that introduce new topics or other aspects within the same topic: “What makes digital photography fascinating to you?” 4. Secondary questions are those that help the interviewee clarify or elaborate on responses which may not have been clear or complete: “Can you please give an example of that?” “What do you mean by the word, 'esoteric'?” “Did you say 'poorer' or 'purer'?” 5. Neutral questions ask for simple, clear-cut answers. These is the type that interviewers should ask. “What is it like being a girl studying engineering?” “What are the latest developments in your field?” 6. Leading questions are those that direct (or force) the interviewee make expected responses. These should generally be avoided. “Noontime shows are stupid, aren't they?” (You are making the person agree with you.) “Is it true that you did not vote for our president? Who did you vote for?” (You are forcing a person to say something that is supposed to be a secret.) “Where were you when you murdered the victim?” (You are already assuming that the suspect is actually guilty.) 7. Loaded questions are those “loaded” with some negative aspect of the interviewee, and thus highly inappropriate. “How can you stand being around a bunch of idiots?” (You are calling his/her friends “idiots”.) “What ever happened to the corruption charges against you?” “When the aliens to you up on their spaceship, did they do anything sexual to you?” (From the movie “Independence Day”, 1995.) Tips in Conducting an Interview 1. Contact the person you wish to interview ahead of time. 2. Get permission first before using any recording equipment (e.g., voice recorder, video cameras). Research is ethical! 3. Check if your recording equipment is working properly. 4. Take down notes during the interview. Do not rely on electronic recording equipment. 5. Listen attentively during the interview. Show your interviewee that you are interested. Avoid doing other things during the interview, such as browsing your phone. 6. Ask only one question at a time. 7. Tactfully redirect the interviewee if they stray away from the topic. 8. After the interview, send your interviewee a thank-you note (or a small token of appreciation). WRITING CHAPTER IV: RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The fourth chapter of a thesis or research paper is called Results and Discussion. In a qualitative research paper, this chapter presents the results of the interview. There is no fixed sections in this chapter. When writing this chapter, consider: 1) You intended audience (i.e, your teacher or research panel); and 2) your teacher's requirements for the subject. Begin with a brief background about the interview situation (When? Where?) and the interviewee(s). Present the interview in the order that the questions are presented in the interview guide. Give the main points discussed during the interview. Paraphrase or summarize the responses of your interviewee(s). Use quotations only if the interviewee said something particularly striking. Quotations provide flavor to the interview report. Ensure the smooth flow of ideas by using transitional devices (such as first, next, then, meanwhile, finally, and others). Rising Collaborative Production duo Re.decay shares ‘Ghost (feat. Brian Ennals)’ Single

Rising production duo Re.decay have released their single, ‘Ghost (feat. Brian Ennals)’ on the 29th of May via SPRINGSTOFF. Premiered via bond, the single is lifted from their upcoming EP, Down Long Enough, which will be released on the 19th of June. Module 2 In Review

Continuing my big catch up marathon, after spending the last week catching up on COMP3141 and my thesis I’m now desperately spending today trying to catch up and get ahead on security!  This weeks module was all about thinking like a security engineer and introducing early fundamentals. I am finding it a little disappointing the lack of technical examples even at this stage, however I do recognise that it’s by virtual of being a non-technical course.
