My Top 12 Favorite Anime of 2023 (and more)!

This was a great year for anime, so here's a long list of my top 12 (including some bonus great anime). If you get tired of clicking the review links, check out my anime overview collection for all of them here.  You can also check out my list of favorite manga here!

Some of these are ongoing, so consider those only a review of the first cour-- no official endorsement on the rest because it hasn't aired yet!

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury (Season 2)

When I listed G-Witch in last year's top anime list, I prayed the show wouldn't betray me. Fortunately, it didn't! Though the final half of the show was a bit rushed, it remained must-see, compelling sci-fi full of exciting twists and turns. And I adore the well developed romance between the robot-piloting protagonist and precious girl, Suletta, and her fierce fiancé, Miorine.  Whether you’re here for starcrossed queer lovers, robots wrecking each other, tense battles between opposing political factions, or morally-horrifying moms on a revenge spree, you’re in for a treat.

Yuri is my Job!

Hime is roped into working at a cafe where the waitresses playact as students of the fictional all girl’s school from a beloved novel series. However, Hime finds her co-worker, Mitsuki, has an inexplicable grudge against her. Thus begins a tangled web of romance and wounded feelings among the girls in the cafe! Yuri is My Job seems like a fun comedy boasting a cast full of quirky lesbians, but then reveals itself to be a complicated and fascinating examination of performance- as it intersects with queerness, girlhood,  and the desire to be “likeable” and “cute". It's top-tier lesbian drama full of fraught relationships and it's absolutely worth a watch.

The Apothecary Diaries (still ongoing, review is for the first cour)

Though it's still going, I have to sing the praises of this dazzling anime about a saavy apothecary who uses her medical expertise to solve the many murders and betrayals in the Emperor's palace. MaoMao is a fantastic lead, a poison-obsessed gremlin who's whip-smart, deadpan, and fun to follow. The Apothecary Diaries has intrigue, well-developed characters, and an impeccable atmosphere. It tells a great range of stories, from romantic triumph, to bittersweet tales of recovering from grief, to pure tragedies. I'm totally hooked.

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady

When Euphie is dumped by her fiance at a ball, the oddball princess Anis rescues her.  Euphie becomes Anis' assistant in her quest to develop magical tools. The girls also start to develop feelings for each other, while discovering a conspiracy among the nobility. I'm always desperately in need of cool lesbians having action-packed fantasy adventures, and Magirevo delivers. The characters grow in entertaining ways, we get to see them fight dragons in killer action scenes, and the romantic development is completely satisfying. It's a simple story at its core, but the lovable characters, joyous queerness and jubilant execution make it a great watch.

Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story (Season 2)

In the second season of the anime about girls homoerotically golfing while dealing with the mafia and ludicrous family drama, Birdie Wing remains a bombastically absurd sports anime that is fun all the way through. Please come watch these girls get ridiculous sports  injuries, scream their super golf attacks, experience extremely extra plot twists--and be super gay with each other, of course. The finale didn't go quite as hard as I wanted (and the romance is more subtexual than I wanted), but you need to allow yourself to experience the madness of Birdie Wing.

Skip and Loafer

An endearingly dorky, earnest, and driven girl moves from her small town to Tokyo. While she struggles to adjust, she befriends a nice popular boy who's got some baggage. Skip and Loafer is a show that’s like a warm hug. It's sweet, entertaining and funny. It handles adolescent struggles with tender nuance. There's a emphasis on kindness, connection, and looking past stereotypes and misconceptions. It also includes a trans character who's treated with respect (and is a great character in general!) Let this show touch your heart.

Undead Murder Farce

An immortal woman has had most of her body stolen by a mysterious man. Reduced to a head carried around by her maid, she teams up with a half-demon man to track the thief down while solving supernatural mysteries all across Victorian England.

This a fun, campy mystery series starring three asshole weirdo protagonists,  it’s bursting with supernatural creatures and literary references. We've got Sherlock Holmes, The Phantom of the Opera, Carmilla and more...along with a vampire murders and werewolf drama galore. UDM is a wonderful romp with stylish, slick direction... and it’s unexpectedly really gay.  I’m aching to see more of these scrappy misfits and their adventures.

Migi & Dali

A story of twins who are pretending to be one kid in order to fool their foster parents and find out who killed their mother. It starts out as an utterly absurd comedy becomes a impressive and genuinely tense murder mystery that is incredibly moving at times, all while keeping up it’s signature brand of goofiness. There’s genuine commentary on abuse, the damage you can do to children by forcing perfection on them, the struggle of being a foster kid, grief and recovery and more. There's also some great character development. It's a weird one, but it's absolutely worth sticking with.

Pluto

Somebody is killing the most advanced robots in the  world and murdering humans alongside them. A robot detective is trying to track this killer down, but he might be compromised as well. Pluto is a tense, tense, tightly plotted robot murder mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Through robots, it explores the idea of being a tool in a corrupt system, and tackles subjects like war, imperialism, and the nature of hatred. It's a masterful psychological thriller with stunning animation and a rich story.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

This anime approaches the story of Scott Pilgrim and Ramona's seven evil exes from a brands new angle, and the results are great. We get a exploration of relationships and regrets, the messiness of communication and connection, the trials of becoming an adult, all with the signature goofy video game antics. Characters neglected in previous iterations finally get their due, new facets of the story are explored, queer relationships are delved into more, girls kiss...and it's all accompanied by phenomenal animation and a killer soundtrack.

Soaring Sky! Precure

Sora lives in a world called Skyland and wants to be a great hero. When rescuing the kidnapped baby princess, she falls through a portal to earth. There she meets her fellow magical warriors, and as Precure they protect the princess from the villains!

This vibrant, warm-hearted adventure got me back on the Precure train! This series boasts a lot exciting firsts for the franchise--the first official male cure, the first main cure that's eighteen years old- but above all, it has a lively team of characters with who have an entertaining dynamic and enjoyable individual journeys. It's often very funny, the baby has a surprisingly good character arc, and it's bursting with magical girl (and boy) goodness! It's also not afraid to give you an emotional gutpunch when you've been lured into a false sense of security by all the fun times. If you're new to Precure, this is a great jumping on point, and if you've watched it before, this is a series you won't want to miss.

I'm in Love with the Villainess

Rae is reincarnated as the heroine of her favorite dating sim. But she has no interest in romancing any of the boys- she’s head over heels for Claire Francois, the snooty villainess.

Villainess may not be as polished--storywise or animation-wise-- as these other entries. It's a messy series, it has plenty of problems...but it's also very fun, and it touched my queer little heart like no other. Queer people get to indulge in our imperfect faves too, and the silly shenanigans, blatant lesbian wish fulfillment, honest advocacy for queer people, and the joy and earnestness of the series works for me!

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End (still ongoing, review is for the first cour)

Frieren is a long-lived elf who was once part of an adventuring party that saved the world from the Demon Lord. But now her friends are passing away and the world is moving on. She decides to retrace her old party's journey so she can understand what she's feeling.

Frieren is both an interesting examination of what happens after the hero saves the world, as well as a meditation on mortality, grief,  and the endless march of time. It takes you on a quiet, beautiful and sometimes touching journey though a pastoral fantasy world. There's some breath-taking animation and excellent atmosphere to enjoy.

Spy x Family (Season 3)

Spy x Family is pretty much staying the course from when we last checked in,  though this season gives a lot more attention to Yor, and I love the cruise ship arc and all the ridiculous fights she gets into a lot! That arc contains some of my favorite gags of the series too (like Loid’s  attempts to be a cool dad). Otherwise, Spyfam has settled into a series that intends to be around for the long haul, so don’t expect too much forward plot momentum. And Yuri (the man, not the genre) unfortunately still exists. Overall it was good season and remains a fun  adaptation. Yor, please step on me.

It's all thanks to your father, the CEO of Tokyo's General Hospital. That entailed attending galas, white-tie events, and whatever luxurious engagement that the lower class could only dream of.

Even the smell within the venue was just as luxurious as the types of engagements they linger in. The stench of cologne belonging to Tom Ford, Dior, Hermes all found its way in your nose, releasing you from the choke-hold of musty cigars.

Luxury would still follow you, regardless of where you went. Luxury was your comfort. Luxury is what you can breathe. Own. Adorn. Become.

For you, money had no bounds, no limits.

Everyone would flock towards you, regardless of age. They would kiss your cheeks, smell you, and kiss you some more.

To them, you were the goddess, Venus, because of the way they were drawn to you.

They wanted you. They wanted to become you, beautiful and immortal in luxury.

Unfortunately for them, you were untouchable. Eyes of envy will always stalk you, but they could never haunt you. It's as though the supplication had rinsed the sins of envy off of you. And everytime you'd exit an event, you were just as pure as when you came in.

You were invincible. Since that's the power of money. Soon, that's what people realized.

No.

That's what fated realized.

Fate saw how you swirled your champagne. Fate saw how you looked bored. Fate saw how luxury had a comforting hold on you.

To you, money was the back-bone to everything. Without it would mean you've been stripped from your status as a goddess, as a human. Fate knew this, and exploited it.

In one fell swoop-- fate had orchestrated a cold-case on your father.

It dominoed from you becoming Venus, to becoming a slave. A slave who shouldn't even dare kiss her feet.

Now you were no longer human.

One thing that you've realized as your time as a goddess is that gods don't face responsibility. They imposed it. Now you face the laws that you once imposed. A cruel reminder of the mortality of humans, and anything beneath them. Of yourself.

You had caught glimpse of the man who did it. Somehow he let you live. Perhaps it was because he knew that you were worse off alive than dead. But he didn't share his name. Of course he wouldn't. When you described him to the police, through brimming tears-- the police wouldn't do anything. Mostly because they thought you were delusional.

There was no evidence. No CCTV footage, nothing.

Stockholders entered to a state of frenzy. The men in the room taunted you like bullies in a playground when you suggested to take over.

"Women don't know the first thing about business!" That was your fathers right-hand man, Albert, who gave you all the pretty dresses and jewelry when you were a child. He was the one who'd beckon you to join him and your father for golf.

This is the first time you realize Albert was after the hospital.

"Just sit there, and look pretty. We can handle it." Another stakeholder said.

You sat there, head hung low. Your father had just passed away, and the first thing that these men in the room do is talk business. None of them take a moment of silence to mourn. They all seemed too excited to take this as a golden opportunity.

Every part of you wanted to scream and shout. To insult them-- to burn their skin with the cigarette butts.

But you didn't. And you don't.

For the first time, you realize that the men here-- they weren't men. They were a bunch of children playing dress-up, and wearing expensive suits of brands they cannot pronounce. Their cigars were an accessory. Their fat fingers greedy for money as they are for young women.

You grit your teeth. You were going to find the man who killed your father, and pay him ten-fold.

When lawyers flocked to your door, you had no clue what to do. Unfortunately, you weren't well educated with many matters. And this was one of them. But Albert appeared, and smoothly took over everything. As though he was your father, as though everything belonged to him.

Perhaps ignorance truly is bliss. But it also resulted in you suffering the consequences of having to lean on Albert. Only for him to ask for something in exchange.

"What makes you think you're entitled to trade?" You crossed your arms.

He runs a hand through his bald head. "Well, I just think that it would be fair if you would marry Tenya."

You rolled your eyes. "No one would want to marry me anymore. Especially when I have nothing. I don't think your son even has eyes for me."

Albert waves his hand, nonchalant about your words. "Does it matter? There are still some things that need to be done with the hospital."

Oh.

"I see..." your gaze falls the ground, "You want a temporary marriage between your son and I."

"Yes." The words come out blunt, and it didn't help either. Secretly, you had wished that maybe you could be in a love-filled marriage. But this felt another jab to the gut.

Who knew one could fall beyond the earth and brush the gates of the Underworld.

The only saviour for you must come from hell.

The funniest thing is watching people cling to articles with no real credible sources that Jikook spent no time together in Japan and stayed in seperate hotels and ate alone. LMAO then left to go to another town and spend no time together. Disptach literally said Jikook were going together to shoot a documentary TOGETHER. We know that is not the real reason, but there is no way in hell they are gonna set Jikook up in different hotels, just for them to meet up to film whatever it is they need to film. How fucking dumb are you people? Insecure jikookers, antis and tkk are all losing their fucking minds and making up scenarios at this point to explain away Jikook's gayness. Acting like while JK is filming a performance for a show, that Jimin can't sight see. Clinging to articles with no real confirmation, making up scenarios about it being only for work. 1) Which tour stop was your favorite?

London is always the best because it’s home. I also loved Tokyo, Harry went there a few years back and always talked about it and it was sweet to see the city from the POV of someone who loves it so much. We had a few days off before and after the shows so we were able to play tourists which is always fun. 

2) Tour fits! Which was your number one?

Hmmmm… this is hard but the last Wembley show. Heart overalls with no shirt. Delicious.

3) Harry's performed numerous covers on tour. If you had to choose, which has been his best for you? Which song would be a dream cover?

Hopelessly Devoted. I tried to get him to do Summer Lovin’ or really lean into the Danny Zucko of it all and go full Grease Lightin' but luckily for me - I still got what I wanted just a little bit after the show.

4) Lucky you, you've got access to any piece of Harry's merch you'd like. What are you choosing?

Our custom gazelles. That was my idea! It started with the custom final show shirts from the 2018 tour and now every end of tour run he comes up with something unique to give to all the band and crew.

5) Choose your favorite bathroom sign from Love on Tour

Kiwee. I still use it to this day!

6) Which opening act has been your favorite?

Wolf Alice! That was a special request from me - I showed Harry their music back in 2016. If I had a choice they’d be the openers from the very start.

7) You can add any of Harry's songs to the set list from any of his past albums. Which one?

Ever Since New York. You should've seen my reaction when he played it on NYC Night 15. He didn't give me any heads up. I was floored.

8) What are your very own essentials for being away from home on tour?

My work computer and film camera.

9) What's Harry like on tour? Any memorable moments, favorite crowd interactions?

I've been lucky enough to be with Harry through every tour in his career even through the tail end of the band. And I can honestly say this is the most relaxed I have ever seen him on a tour. He has his schedule down to a science. He wakes up in the morning after letting himself have a 'lie-in' (usually is up by 9 which to me is not a lie in but for a man who usually wakes up at 6 it is) we have breakfast together always. It’s a must. And then he’s off to the arena by mid-day while I work but I always make sure to get to the arena early so we can watch the opener together. And then I give him his space to do his ~rituals~ and watch the show from the back or the bleachers. One fun fact that not many would know is as soon as he gets out of a show and back to the hotel or home it’s straight to the treadmill to perform the show through one more time. So it’s a good 90 minutes before he’s in bed again. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

10) In honor of Harry's 30th birthday: Harry played at Acrisure Arena in Thousand Palms, CA on his 29th birthday. Aside from the show, how did the two of you celebrate?

This was nice because I didn’t have to actually plan the party! We had an afters at the arena filled with lots of cake from Hansen’s. We snuck into the golf course at the Madison once we got back to where we were staying - a very drunk yet memorable decision.

The SPs mainly served United hubs on the West Coast, and they were regulars at Los Angeles LAX, San Francisco International and also Seattle/Tacoma, where United was in direct competition with Northwest Airlines' transpacific flights.

N142UA is seen here in the early morning hours, inbound from Tokyo Narita, as it passes the restaurant deck of the former golf course on 24th Ave. South - back in the 80s a great place for breakfast with a perfect view on morning arrivals to SeaTac's runway 34R.

The airport comprises a spa, a dedicated golf course, a casino, various indoor games, an ice skating rink, and the Museum of Korean Culture. The airport's departure and arrival average times are a delight for every traveler, as it has the fastest customer processing time across the world. The airport is located 48 km from Seoul. This airport has won various prestigious awards over the years, making it a delight to travel.

Hamad International Airport, Qatar

Though there were some delays in opening this airport, they can handle nearly 50 million passengers per year which speaks about the prowess and efficiency. This lovely airport has an oasis theme and water motif built in and is a delight to pass the time between your flights. They use recycled water to grow the lovely indoor plants, which are a sight to withhold. It has lovely artistry, like the lamp bear designed by Swiss creator Urs Fischer. It played a vital role in handling the usher of guests during the FIFA World Cup. The airport consists of two parallel runways, one considered the longest runway in the world. It also acts as a major cargo destination from across the world.

Tokyo Haneda Airport, Japan

The official Tokyo International Airport serves the region along with Narita International Airport. The airport is 15 km south of Tokyo in Ota, Tokyo and covers a 1522-hectare area for its operations. By traveler’s throughput, it is one of the busiest airports in the world. The 2020 Summer Olympics saw the government increase accessibility and made new railway lines, which enabled travel time of less than 20 minutes to Tokyo station. It has three terminals equipped with numerous stores for travelers to enjoy their time here.

Munich Airport, Germany

Munich Airport, also known as Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport, is the second busiest airport in Germany. Lufthansa calls it their den along with Condor and TUI fly Deutschland. The location is 29 km from Munich and is near to the town of Freising. It boasts of two runways and has dedicated parking lots for visitors. The Munich airport center comprises various business and local leisure centres for travelers. This airport also has a helipad, and the two runways are of 4000metres long. It has a lovely visitor viewing area from which great views of Terminal 1 can be obtained.  

Hong Kong International Airport, China

Located in Chek lap Kok in Hong Kong's western region, this airport was started in 1998. This airport has the credentials to hold the world's busiest cargo gateway and the largest terminals for passenger movement. It employs almost 70000 people, making it a big employment zone for the country. It covers an area of 3101 acres and has 90 boarding gates. It has two terminals and huge concourses for swift movement of air traffic. It has various engagement avenues for the public to keep engaged during a long flight haul.

Dubai International Airport, UAE

With a whopping 88 million passengers in 2017, Dubai International Airport was the fifth busiest in the world. It operates out of two runways, which are more than 4500 meters long. Dubai, being a major flower imports center has a dedicated arm for the smooth functioning of the same. The airport speaks of the luxury of Dubai and caters to travelers with the multitude of duty-free shops, premium lounges, and world-class amenities. It acts as a s primary fulcrum in global aviation between the west and the east.

Zurich Airport, Switzerland

This airport, which started in 1948, serves Zurich, Switzerland and is located 13 km from it. It has three operational runways, each beyond the 2500 m length, serving around 29 million passengers yearly. According to officials, this number is forecasted to reach 50 million by 2030. The terminals are well maintained and equipped with essential and luxury brand outlets for everyone's delight. This airport deals with the tourists coming in from the world over to witness the beauty of Switzerland.

Vancouver International Airport, Canada

The airport in Vancouver serves the Lower Mainland region and has a dedicated float plane terminal, making it unique. It is a star-studded affair as it has won 12 nonstop awards for Best North American Airport till 2022 by Skytrax. The airport also holds worthy mention of having a maximum number of direct flights to China than any other across this region. It has three runways, out of which two are more than 3000 meters long while the third is 2225 meters. How he got here: Taking a break from his hectic routine, he found himself in Tokyo for a brief respite. As he relaxed in his hotel room, he caught sight of fireworks illuminating the sky in the middle of the day from the window. Intrigued by the spectacle, he made up his mind to investigate and headed downstairs. However, as he stepped out of his room, a weird emptiness greeted him. Though initially unfazed as it wasn't a busy time, he still couldn't shake off the unsettling feeling when he noticed the absence of any individuals, even beyond the hotel premises.

First Game: He initiated his gaming experience with an intense game of hide and seek known as "Ace of Spades" held in a playground. The game had a maximum capacity of 15 participants and lasted for one hour. The objective was for players to conceal themselves successfully and avoid being detected by the seekers. Those who managed to remain hidden until the end of the game would be the winners. However, a notable modification was introduced: the seekers assumed the roles of two fierce tigers. As a result, the game took a drastically intense turn, resembling a brutal bloodbath.

Fic Being Discussed

DISCLAIMER: No sexually explicit content or OC/Canon romance is actually featured here (except if you count past instances of OC/Saki, referenced Aragaki Shinjiro/FEMC, or onesided Aragaki Shinjiro/OC), but as the fic does delve into mature themes like teen pregnancy (due to the MC's younger sister being pregnant), familial abuse, mistreatment of an autistic character, and bereavement, sex and matters relating to sexuality is/will be discussed. This, however, is basically an OC-centric character study above all else, so more emphasis will be placed on found family and interpersonal relationships than romance, meaning while it isn't necessarily a Persona 4 retelling with a female protagonist, it does involve a FEMC navigating the intricacies of socialization as an autistic late bloomer on the aroace spectrum.

As far as protagonists go, I feel like Iroha is interesting in the sense that she isn't exactly a stereotypical goodie two shoes. Like, yes, she's capable of being kind, but she's also a girl that doesn't care one bit about her family, to the point where she might have straight up killed both her sister and parents had she stayed in Tokyo. Coupled with the fact she's also emotionally stunted and had never really been taught how to properly regulate her emotions thanks to her autism pretty much being left undiagnosed and her parents doubling down on punishing her whenever they believe she is acting up, she isn't above using violence to vent out her frustration, to the point where she had once attacked her father with a golf club.

Granted, Iroha is at least significantly more well behaved than Kohaku who goes out partying, stays up late, and regularly gets involved with the wrong crowd, so the Momotomis never have to worry about her bringing any unscrupulous boys home or engaging in petty crime, but she does, well... constantly fail the vibe check, so to speak. To that end, they think she's both embarrassingly rude and socially inept, so they're lowkey ashamed of her and even think she's unfit for society.

Like, on one hand, she's very self sufficient, so they never have to worry about her compared to Kohaku, but on the other hand, she absolutely sucks at reading the room and can lash out at any moment even when they attempt to do damage control, to the point where they're also scared of her. When it comes down to it, though, the Momotomis are just really ill-equipped at handling a child with autism, meaning for as much as they love her, they were pretty much incompetent at parenting, which ultimately led them to get walked all over by Kohaku and Iroha herself resenting them with every fiber of her being. It also doesn't help they suck at conveying their love for her, that to this day, she is convinced they were never once on her side.

Due to this being the case, Iroha grew up to be mature beyond her years yet at the same time, not exactly well-adjusted either. Why, she doesn't know how to be the 'bigger person' and if angered, could go from 0 to 10 real quick; in fact, I headcanon she would have gotten into a physical altercation with Ebihara Ai and even went as far as to call Morooka an 'out of touch old fart' somewhere along the way, just because something tells me he'll have no qualms gossiping to others about her pregnant sister or pretty much coming to the wrong conclusions about her.

Then again, Iroha lacks much interest in the opposite sex to begin with and despite being a nail that stands out, doesn't feel a need to doll herself up or acknowledge her appearance unless absolutely necessary, so her sense of individuality feels vague. Of course, she knows she enjoys golf, cooking, and reading, but outside of that, there isn't much else really going for her... meaning it feels apt she can wield more than one Persona rather than just one like everyone else, if only because her personality itself isn't something she could easily grasp nor define.

Honestly, had it not been for the fact Yasogami High is really lax on dress code, Iroha would have worn the same uniform as every other girl... because at the end of the day, she sees her body as merely a vessel, so she can't say she's all that attached to her face, her 'female-ness', or her existence as 'Momotomi Iroha', meaning if she woke up tomorrow, no longer having her female parts, I don't see her giving a shit, since it's not like it would hinder her from playing golf.

At the same time, though, she doesn't mind the world perceiving her as a cis girl, yet strangely feels no shame or embarrassment when naked due to the fact she doesn't view her body in a sexual light, so she thinks individuality is kind of wasted on her. Why, all things considered, Iroha thinks she's a very boring person and believes the other girls in the Investigation Team are way more of a catch than she could ever be.

The Overture

Came from far away, across the Atlantics. They're just our customers as well as others,

but the difference is amidst misfortune conflict between two continents: Europe and South America.

This city, granted the city status from Queen Victoria is known as a British Overseas Territory in Continental Europe, it saw many ships on trade and sometimes in battle. The cityscape is sunkissed, and coloured in beige. The main street is well equipped with sunroofs on the wall.

"Hehe, this pamphlet of a café is silly... Mary's?"

"Harm indeed"

They carry large golf bags on each shoulder.

"Hey look there, Mary's. How about taking a breather over a cup of tea?"

Then a lady tore up the colleague's pamphlet, and said:

"Sí sí, but remember who our adversaries are!"

After they are served with tea on the roofed cafeteria table, enjoy the hot, and the sweet from teacup. Then rang the beeper in her pocket.

"Oh, the 5th Column seems to have crossed the border."

Her companions pursed their lips in a whistle.

“Azuca, it’s just time for the Flamenco guys incoming…”

Each of them cheered with cups of tea.

“¡Sí, por Nuestra Señora! (Yeah, for Our Lady!)”

-Royal Navy HQ, the Gibraltar Harbour

Here the naval base of the Royal Navy is a strategic spot to make a connection between Mediterranean and Atlantic. British Forces Gibraltar is stationed there to keep their eyes peeled for Soviet Fleets expedition on the Mediterranean.

The day passed as usual, the Officers were at teatime.

In the office, the Officers are accustomed to gathering for joking around noon.

“Captain Young of our task force did a great job on the South Atlantic, I think the helicopter is the best invention.”

Said Townsend.

“Haha,”

Surrounding men also laughed.

“Let’s thank Da Vinci’s sketch for sinking submarines, cheers!”

“Don’t forget about the depth charge!”

Then officers felt the earthquake.

“Oh, it’s quaking just like Japan!”

Townsend rushed to the windowside seeing outside of HQ area, then noticed fire at storehouses on the Harbour. She shouted to an ensign, her subordinate.

“Ensign, report many explosions at sametime on the Harbour. It’s undoubtedly sabotage!”

“Aye!”

Everyone in the office room obviously ran around in a sudden panic.

Ensign telephoned the Admiralty in London to report it in an atmosphere of pandemonium. The telephone is antique, with a rotary dial and set on the wall.

While the call, Ensign shouted to Townsend:

“Our admiral said it can’t be Argentine attack,”

Townsend glared at him while walking toward.

“Why dare you make a telephone call? The Admiralty doesn’t matter in this emergency!”

He answered in a small voice.

“...so Admirals should know…”

Then she took away his phone in hand to respond.

“Please stop your assumptions in London, the emergency is here in Gibraltar!”

Ensign noticed a rocket sounding outside. When Townsend hung up the receiver, she saw a RPG-7 warhead flying toward the HQ.

“Jump out of the window, guys!”

“Whoa?!”

She drugged his shoulder to jump into the opened window nearby. They heard the roar and felt heat on their back.

Spring 2023 Anime Overview: Skip and Loafer and Birdie Wing Season 2

Skip and Loafer

Mitsumi comes from a small, under-populated town and her dream is to become a government official and help her town out. After getting into an elite high school in Tokyo, she moves there and finds that there are a lot of challenges in the big city and new people to meet. Her new friend, Sousuke, is a nice, popular guy, but he also has a troubled past. But Mitsumi is determined to face anything life throws her way!

Skip and Loafer is just one of those shows that’s like a warm hug. Mitsumi is an instantly endearing protagonist- dorky, earnest, and driven. She's overwhelmed moving from her small town to Tokyo, and a little naive about some things, but she's  a can-do gal determined to make it work! There's an overwhelming kindness to Skip and Loafer that permeates every inch of it. Characters that would just be a simple antagonist or "mean girl" in other anime have their struggles explored and become whole, realized people with good points and bad points.

Sousuke is a troubled former child star who experiences some conflict, but it's not like Mitsumi 'fixes' him-  he simply learns and grows through his experiences with her, both through their conflicts and moments of connection. There's some great female friendships too, and they focus on girls from different social spheres working to find real connection to each other and trying to look past stereotypes and misconceptions. It shows why labels like 'popular girl', 'nerd girl', and so on, are no reason to judge someone.

There's also some nice trans representation with Mitsumi's aunt, Nao, who is a trans woman. Nao-chan's a fun character, who tries to guide her overwhelmed s niece and forms a surprising connection with one of her friends, while still showing off her own sweet and goofy quirks and giving hints about her own life story and how it shaped her outlook. She is also truly wise:

Some brief transphobia towards Nao is shown in the form of people whispering about her on the train, but Mitsumi immediately holds her hand and shows support. Skip and Loafer's kindness extends to the treatment of Nao-chan, and we're clearly meant to cheer for her as she thrives.

All-in-all, Skip and Loafer is a relaxing, entertaining and funny- it has a light touch and a focus on relationships, treating the conflicts and complications high schoolers can face with nuance and empathy. The characters are loveable and the setting is fully realized. The animation is very cute and delivers a couple of beautiful moments. It was the most consistently excellent show I watched this season (even if it didn't reach the highest highs of some other shows) and I think anyone who enjoys slice of life shows, or just wants something that's pleasant to watch but has enough depth to remain entertaining, should definitely check it out.

Birdie Wing Season 2

Premise: Season 2 of the saga where two girl golf geniuses just want to face each other one the green and have their homoerotic sports rivalry like they were MEANT TO, but weird family drama and the actual mafia keep getting in the way.

In my review of Birdie Wing's first season, I completely enjoyed the show's absurdity, but was worried it could all come crashing down in the second season. Fortunately, it did not! Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story remains a bombastically absurd sports anime that is fun to watch all the way through. Please come watch these girls get ridiculous sports injuries, scream their super golf attacks, and be ten times more intense than your average shonen sports show.

Birdie Wing also pulled some great moves this season, like having Eve's caddy from golfing high school be pulled into the absurd world of the golf mafia and react to it with the same panicked confusion the audience might. "They're going to KILL you if you LOSE A GOLF GAME? Why is the golf course like this? How much does this cost?" she cries while Eve just shrugs everything off.

Meanwhile, the show finally brings in the bread and butter of sports anime- injuries and diseases that the main characters are going to ignore for the love of sport. But the tired trope becomes wonderfully absurd and almost verges on pointed commentary when it's GOLF, the sport of retirees, causing these ridiculous injuries. Seeing Eve gets covered with bandages because she golfed too fucking hard, or having this line:

...It really throws into perspective how ridiculous sports anime is when it glamorizes people destroying their bodies for the 'love of the game'. I don't know if that was intentional, but it is very funny.

I am immensely grateful that the plot twist I was fearing didn't come to fruition in the show- instead, in classic Birdie Wing fashion, they teased that terrible plot twist, but instead gave an explanation that was a thousand times more soap opera-esque and ridiculous. I have to to applaud that moxie.

But what's important is that the true believers made it through. We're okay. (If you want to know what I'm talking about and don't mind spoilers, please enjoy this meme I made based off a famous tweet by Crunchyroll).

I must share an anecdote- I had to watch the finale while on vacation with my Mom. When she overheard all the yelling, she was like "are you watching a magical girl show?" "no it's a sports anime- they're playing golf" "Oh...why does it sound like a magical girl show?"

Sadly, the finale was a little bit of a let down- it was rushed compared to other parts of the show and felt like less than it could be. (Considering G-witch had the same problem, I wonder if it was a Bandai wide issue).

But it was still fun. While Aoi and Eve sadly do not kiss or become an explicit couple (despite Aoi very much wanting to!), there is at least absurd golf team up moment you could read as being a Super Deep metaphor for their love. Not much of an excuse, but it's something. The end of the show didn't go as hard as it could have (or, I think, should have) but it was still ridiculously, wonderfully Birdie Wing.

 I was disappointed Aoi and Eve were separated this season so much (and unlike the first season, did not pine for each other nearly as much during separations since they were busy contending with ridic plot stuff), but on the plus side, there weren't really many 'sexual menace' or jarringly mature moments like the first season had. 

Overall, I think it was a really solid follow up, and I can now wholeheartedly recommend Birdie Wing as a show. Just heed the content warnings I left in my first review so you too don't get killed by golf! Once you're ready, let the glorious golf wash over you. You won't regret it.
