Following an executive order by President Donald Trump on January 20, 2025, the United States has officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America within its jurisdiction. In response, Google Maps has updated its platform to reflect this change. Users in the U.S. will now see the label "Gulf of America," while those in Mexico will continue to see "Gulf of Mexico." Users in other regions will see both names displayed.
This renaming has been implemented in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), prompting Google to adjust its maps accordingly. The change is part of a broader initiative by President Trump to honor American contributions, which also includes reverting the name of Denali back to Mount McKinley.
The renaming has sparked diplomatic tensions, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum formally contesting the adjustment. She emphasized that Mexico and the international community continue to recognize the body of water as the Gulf of Mexico.
In summary, the Gulf of Mexico has been renamed to the Gulf of America within U.S. territories, and this change is now reflected on Google Maps, with variations based on user location.

My queen was checking out estate sales on estatesales.net & saw one in Alamo, TN that had some cookware she like the looks of so we drove out that way on Saturday:

When we got there, the cookware turned out to be smaller than it looked in the photos so we didn't get it but we didn't leave empty handed.

The Gulf of Mexico: Secrets Beneath the Waves
Lisa Giammarino NJ here. You might think you know the Gulf of Mexico, but let me tell you, that great stretch of water has stories it does not whisper to everyone. I have spent countless hours tracing lines on maps and squinting at the glow of Google Maps, and every time, the Gulf of Mexico still finds ways to surprise me.
Tumblr media
Now, some folks call it the Gulf of America. I remember the day I read about the Gulf of Mexico name change. My coffee went cold as I scrolled through Google Maps Gulf of America Change. Why did Trump rename the Gulf of Mexico? That question danced in my head like a riddle no one was eager to solve. On Google Maps Gulf of Mexico Name Change searches, I found arguments and politics, but the waves cared little about what men called them.
Lisa Giammarino NJ likes facts, so I asked myself, who owns the Gulf of Mexico? Countries like the United States, Mexico, and Cuba all dip their toes in it, but ownership feels like the wrong word. Can you own something that wild?
Maps carry answers but leave you thirsting for more. I dragged my finger across a United States Map and followed it down to a Gulf of Mexico Map. Then, for fun, I tried Golf of Mexico. Turns out, typos can teach you things too. Even Apple Maps and Bing Maps seemed to shrug at my curiosity. Maps Google gave me pinpoints, but none explained the feeling in my gut.
Every Gulf of America Day, I think about those who worked and bled along those shores. Fishermen with faces carved by salt air, drilling rigs standing like metal giants, and hurricanes that rip apart lives but somehow cannot break spirits. These are the stories maps cannot tell.
I once stood with an old man who had fished the Gulf of Mexico longer than I had been alive. His skin carried the map of his life, each wrinkles a line toward some forgotten catch. He chuckled when I mentioned Google Maps and Google Maps. Technology made things easier, but he trusted his eyes and the wind more.
Tumblr media
Google Earth once took me below the surface. That blue expanse held more than fish. Shipwrecks slept there. Lost oil barrels, rusted history, maybe even treasure from some long-forgotten voyage. You can see a part of it on Google Earth Map, but the rest is left to your imagination.
Google Maps Gulf of America Reviews make me laugh sometimes. People reviewing water as though it was a sandwich shop. Yet, beneath that humor lies the truth. The Gulf of Mexico is more than blue on maps. It carries lives, storms, and history.
Maps give you borders, but they cannot draw the whispers of the wind or the fear in a sailor's eyes. I chased those whispers, tracing lines across Google Maps, wondering if my fingers touched what explorers once dreamed of.
So next time you look at a Map of the USA, or tap on Google Maps, remember that the Gulf of Mexico holds more than cartographers can ever pin down. Lisa Giammarino NJ learned that standing where the sea meets land. Maybe you will too.

For Google Maps Users in U.S., It’s Now the Gulf of America
Tumblr media Tumblr media
People in Mexico will still see the name Gulf of Mexico, with international users seeing both names, Google said. The change follows an executive order from President Trump.
Google has renamed the Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America in its Maps application for users in the United States.
The company started implementing the change after the U.S. government updated the name on its official maps, Google said in a statement on Monday. President Trump ordered U.S. authorities to make the change to official maps in an executive order he signed on his first day in office.
