Aqueduct
Aqueducts transport water from one place to another, achieving a regular and controlled supply to a place that would not otherwise receive sufficient quantities. Consequently, aqueducts met basic needs from antiquity onwards such as the irrigation of food crops and drinking fountains. Ancient aqueducts took the form of tunnels, surface channels and canals, covered clay pipes and monumental bridges.
Ever since the human race has lived in communities and farmed the land, water management has been a key factor in the well-being and prosperity of a community. Settlements not immediately near a freshwater source dug shafts into underground water tables to create wells and cisterns were also created to collect rainwater so that it could be used at a later date. Underground aqueducts and those built as bridges on the surface, however, allowed communities not only to access clean and fresh water but to live further from a water source and to utilise land which would otherwise have been unusable for agriculture.
Where Were the Earliest Aqueducts?
The earliest and simplest aqueducts were constructed of lengths of inverted clay tiles and sometimes pipes which channelled water over a short distance and followed the contours of the land. The earliest examples of these date from the Minoan civilization on Crete in the early 2nd millennium BCE and from contemporary Mesopotamia. Aqueducts were also an important feature of Mycenaean settlements in the 14th century BCE, ensuring autonomy against siege for the acropolis of Mycenae and the fortifications at Tiryns.

Stockholms Stadsbibliotek (Stockholm Public Library) by architect Gunnar Asplund, designed in 1922 and completed 1928. I tend to get drawn back to transition styles time after time and this library, a landmark building in Stockholm is a fine example of architecture's gradual shift from classicism to functionalism. Although I love functionalism, it did often lack the poetic approach as seen here at the main entrance hall with it's Greek style wall decorations carved on black marble inspired by "Iliad" by Homeros ca. 700 BC. The artwork is done by sculptor Ivar Johnsson. Temple of Dionysus (Temple IV)
Yria, Naxos, Greece
580-570 BCE
28,5m x 13,5 m
Ionic order (One of the earliest uses)
Around 580-570 BCE, work began on the fourth and largest temple of Yria, the only one of which remains are visible, and the only one to have been restored. It is an archaic hekatompedon (30 m. long) temple of the Ionic style. It is built of local granο-diorite rock, and it has an Adyton (innermost sanctuary for a mystery cult), marble portico (prostasis) with columns forming a monumental entrance, and a marble altar. Τwο tetrastyle marble colonnades divide the building into three aisles.
The temple is divided into three naves by two rows of four columns of Ionic order, each of which consists of two or three marble drums. The Adyton is separated from the cella by a second monumental gate. The hearth, found inside the temple, was of marble and was used for libations.

Back from a trip to the Greek island of Kérkyra (or Corfu) in the Ionian Sea! I was fortunate enough to see the remains of one of the earliest known Doric temples. The temple was dedicated to the Goddess of the hunt ΑΡΤΕΜΙΣ【Artemis】 (Latin: 𝐃𝐈𝐀𝐍𝐀). The tympanum shows ΜΕΔΟΥΣΑ 【Médousa】 flanked by two lions. ⌛ 6th century BCE 📍 currently in the Archaeological Museum of Corfu (Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Κέρκυρας)
