Cliff walking the Northwest Coast of Skye
We had another beautiful walk today. The start was only about 20 miles from our accommodations, but it was well off the beaten path, on a long single lane road and so the drive took an hour.
The hike started at a farmhouse then climbed to the top of a cliff. It seems that every hike here starts with a big climb. This was through sheep fields that the locals had neatly mowed/ eaten down to a golf course grade surface.
The trail dipped through peat bogs - very mucky- then climbed again until we reached the second highest cliff on Skye, Waterstein Head. We don’t know where the highest is, but this was pretty high with spectacular views.
We got news of the birth of our new grand nephew, Thomas, as we reached the peak. We toasted him with peanut butter sandwiches.
Tumblr media
The single lane was not the only reason we had a long ride this morning!
Tumblr media
The cows had taken the available parking spaces so we left the car beside the road. It felt like we were leaving it in the middle of nowhere where..I guess we were!
Tumblr media
The meadow/bog we climbed up …
Tumblr media
…was cut by some lovely streams
Tumblr media
The view to Waterstein Head.
Tumblr media
View from the peak
Tumblr media
Looking back to where we started
Tumblr media
Three eagles were soaring over us as we ate lunch
Tumblr media
Trekking back across the boggy field
Tumblr media
Don’t be fooled by how green the field looks. Every step was a chance to sink into the peat, which is made up of hundreds of different and colorful species.

Ch. 5: Foursome
“When will you acknowledge that a wolf on a leash isn’t a dog? I’d think someone who works with rescues should know that.”
“Anything can be trained. Lions jump through rings of fire at the circus.”
“Lions aren’t trained, Will, they’re biding their time.” Hannibal reached up and tugged at the man’s curls. Will didn’t pull away. “They either break, or they dream of feasting on the bones of those who thought them tame enough to parade around the ring.”
“What if they don’t mind the ring?”
“Then they’re lying to themselves and end up digging up perfectly nice golf greens.” Hannibal patted Will’s chest. “I didn’t dispose of the body on the golf course, Will. You don’t need to look in the rookery, either. It’s nesting season and the area is off limits — we can’t have you disturbing eagles.”

A Royal County Day
Today was our first day of golf and what a day it was! RCD lived up to all expectations. The course was very challenging and everything you would expect from a links course of it’s reputation. Some things I found particularly surprised by was how fast and rolling the greens were and how some of the tougher holes had domed shaped greens that gave you very little landing area for your approach shots. The front nine of RCD has had endless articles written about it as being the best nine holes of golf ever designed. I’m not a golf expert but from my point of view it was a beautifully difficult test of golf!!
We had outstanding caddies, Patrick and Lenny. They knew the course well and one was a story teller and the other offered the inside gossip of the club. The course itself had huge heathered mounds that were flowering with a bright yellow type of gorse which made the scenery even the more dynamic. The deep blue sea running alone side the course, the mountains of Mourne forming a striking background and the variety of greens of the golf course itself sprinkled with the brown sand traps and the mounds of bright yellow gorse. Truly picturesque.
On the tenth hole, I thought our golf trip was going to come to a quick end as I scaled the side of huge green side mound or should a say almost a cliff, which was only suitable territory for a mountain goat, to attempt to deliver a spectacularly executed flop shot from a ball buried knee deep in the heather. I know, brilliant idea! After a swing and advancing the ball three feet further down the side of the mound. I made a second attempt and that was one attempt too many as I temporarily lost my balance and started to go over backwards but being the finely tuned athlete I am...not... I managed to catch myself and gingerly scaled down the mound of my hands, knees and feet!! That was Kim’s first I told you so moment of the trip! I hate when she’s right!!!
One of the interesting bits of info we found out during the round was that Eli and Peyton Manning had bought the five star hotel located a block or two away from the course. We were unable to get a room there because it was going through a major renovation which the Mannings are, of course, funding.
Some stats from the first round. I will being keeping a running total throughout the trip: (Kim prefers keeping hers to herself:-)
    Score 97
    Yardage Played - 6297
    Lost Balls - 2
No. of Pars, Birdies, Eagles - 3 pars (I wouldn’t dare share the number of bogeys, double bogeys and worse:-) Remember I’m an 18 hdcp!
    Steps - 14,389
    Miles Walked - 6.2
    Green Fee - $375
Caddie Fee - 60 pounds plus tax (These last two stats are a little tacky but I        know you’re curious on what it’s going to cost you when you take your Irish        Golf Vacation!!)
After the round, Kim and I headed to Quinn’s, a well known pub in Newcastle for a pint or two of Guinness and bar food! The atmosphere was what you would expect from a weathered old Irish pub. - Great vibe, good food and the friendliest people you’ll find anywhere!
Then back to The Briers for our last night stay before moving on to Portstewart. I think we’re close to shaking the jet lag which means tomorrow we’ll probably go low at the next course we play, Ardglass Golf Club. BTW Low means lower than the 97 I shot today!
Stay tuned!!
gb
PS - The pictures posted just don’t capture how rolling and massive some of the mounds are but they still give you an idea of the experience.

What Can a Pond Fountain Do for Your Commercial Landscape
A well-designed landscape can make your commercial property look really nice and feel special. Whether you manage a hotel, a golf course, or an office area, installing a pond fountain can make everything look prettier and can help in other ways, too.
A pond fountain instantly makes your property look better.
Commercial pond fountains are designed to be both functional and beautiful, and they come with different spray patterns to match the style of the landscape. Whether you choose a gentle stream or a dramatic cascade, having the right fountain will certainly make your place look and feel special.
Not only do pond fountains look nice, but they can also make your property seem more valuable. Prospective clients, visitors, and employees will appreciate the thought and care that went into the landscape design, which will, in turn, improve your property’s reputation.
A pond fountain keeps the water clean and reduces algae growth.
While the aesthetic benefits of a pond fountain cannot be denied, it also helps the pond stay healthy! Sometimes, ponds can have stagnant water, which can make the pond look gross and can cause problems like green algae, bad smells, and lots of mosquitoes.
A pond fountain keeps the water moving and adds oxygen to the water — a process called “aeration.” Fish and other water organisms need oxygen to live, so the moving water makes it a better home for them. Additionally, when there is enough oxygen, it also stops algae from growing too much.
A pond fountain creates a welcoming and peaceful atmosphere for visitors.
Whether it is a park, a hotel, or a corporate campus, visitors and employees alike enjoy being in a nice and quiet environment where they can feel calm and relaxed. A fountain in a pond can help with that.
The sound of water flowing can have a calming effect on the mind. It can make people less stressed, help them relax, and even help them improve focus. On top of that, the gentle sound of the fountain can cover up loud noises from traffic or the use of heavy machines, creating a more pleasant atmosphere for everyone who visits or works there.
A pond fountain boosts your property’s curb appeal and marketability.
When it comes to commercial real estate, first impressions are very important. A beautifully landscaped property with a pond fountain is naturally more attractive to tenants and visitors.
For businesses that want to create a memorable brand image, having a well-maintained landscape with a beautiful fountain shows that they care about creating a nice place for their customers and workers. This can help them get more visitors and tenants, sure, but it can also increase the property’s value in the market.
If you want to install a pond fountain in your commercial landscape, look no further than Eagle Fountain Works! They have been making durable and high-quality fountains for decades, and they can help you create a beautiful and functional commercial landscape. Contact Eagle Fountain Works today to learn more about the different fountains they have and how they can benefit your commercial property.

Sinclair Golf Course - Sinclair, WY
Tumblr media
Situated in the river bottom along the North Platte River a few miles north of the town of Sinclair is the 9-hole city golf course. We played this course two times, the first time we played for free (the groundskeeper just told us to "go have fun" and drove off in his golf cart to turn off the sprinklers on the first hole for us), the second time we paid $25 to walk 18 holes. This course defines "podunk", although we did appreciate that there are different tees for the back 9. This course was probably in better shape before Rochelle Ranch was built, but it is suffering a bit now. Pronghorns, deer, eagles, hawks, and bunnies were abundant on the course. We only saw 6 other people in both of our rounds. Range balls were not available either time that we visited, they were locked up. The clubhouse wasn't open for either of our visits. The fairways were dry and roughly groomed, sometimes it was hard to differentiate between the fairway and the rough. The greens were rough and bumpy. Additionally, the flies and mosquitoes were a bit of an issue, luckily, the wind helped some with that problem. We give this course 5 stars out of 10 and we hope that things will work out for the city to get it into better shape - they were experiencing management problems during our visits.

Introducing the new Henry County STEM
High School coming to Downtown Stockbridge! ❤️
The new Henry County STEM School vision is best in class excellence and should be the finest high school facility in the state of Georgia when it opens in 2027!
The Henry County school system confirmed the demolition and construction bids were currently being solicited for a fall start date, if all goes well. Funding will be provided in the E-Splost with $45 million initially approved for the project but understanding the economy and construction bid escalations involved with the Stockbridge Amphitheater and Henry County Aquatic Center, I fully expect the final price tag will be north of $60 million or more with inflation rendering the initial project estimates insufficient.
Planned improvements to South Lee St. Include extending the existing 10 foot multi use paths along the full frontage of the project along South Lee St. Plus the City of Stockbridge would like to see appropriate trails on the grounds of the project instead of traditional sidewalks for bike riding & golf cart riding to school emphasizing connectivity. In fact we would like to extend the 10 foot trails all the way to Rock Quarry Rd along South Lee Street connecting to the upcoming Rock Quarry Rd trails. The Rock Quarry Rd widening project starts this winter and should be finished when the STEM School opens in 2027. Imagine students & staff in the Eagles Landing Country Club area taking a golf cart, bike, or scooter to the Henry County STEM School making the project as green friendly as possible with EV charging stations as well.
Our goal in Stocking is to be the most walkable and green friendly community in south metro along the I-75 corridor. That begins with a solid plan and commitment for walkability, pedestrian safety including street lights, and green friendly planning.
Finally, I believe it should include a pedestrian bridge from the STEM School campus across North Henry Blvd to the Stockbridge Amphitheater and City Hall Campus for safe passage along the busy corridor for students and guests. Stockbridge has a million dollars in funding allocated for the pedestrian bridge in T-Splost and Federal Grant awards. I look forward to this transformative STEM School Project being the best educational facility in the state of Georgia when completed in 2027. We are leaning forward to assist as “One Henry” together!

Courtesy MHF News:
The STEM high school plans to offer advanced curriculum for students through three pathways. They are the following:
Aerospace, with a concentration in electrical engineering,
Biotechnology & medical science, and
Sustainability and green energy.
The district plans to offer a “demanding accelerated curriculum, featuring a rigorous sequence of AP courses and integration of university-level research content,” at the STEM high school. They continue work to develop the final course plan that each pathway will follow. The school will also offer the full accompaniment of fine arts, such as band and orchestra, for students. There are no plans for the school to compete in athletics.
When complete, the high school will be able to support an enrollment of 900–1,000 students. Students from throughout Henry County will be eligible to attend the STEM school. In addition, the district will offer transportation for its students. Henry County Schools plans to utilize a lottery when determining which students are selected to attend the school. More details about the lottery will be available closer to the school’s opening.
Students at the STEM school will attend the new school for all classes. It will be their high school of record. This is different than the current Academy for Advanced Studies. Academy students attend their home high school, based on their residence, for half of the day.

BOTR - Day 19 - July 3, 2024
Today we had about 250 miles of driving to do. We continued east through Utah and all of its brown, barren landscape. In the distance on both sides of us we could see mesas, buttes, spires, and rolling hills. The occasional raven was about all the wildlife we saw.
As soon as we crossed into Colorado we started to see green shrubs and red clay hills. The first towns we came upon, Mack and Loma) were green with agricultural and landscaping around homes. The Colorado River provided the water everything needed.
In a little while we rolled into Grand Junction and the visitors center. The host there described some of the local features (Grand Mesa, Monument Canyon). We will definitely spend more time in this area in the future.
Beyond Grand Junction we drive through canyons carved by the Colorado River. The cliffs around us changed with every turn. They went from red clay colors to sandstone and granite. Some looked like they could send an avalanche of stone onto the highway at any minute.

Spectacular drive on 70 East from Grand Junction.
Making our way through the canyons, we stopped for lunch in Rifle, a quaint little town along 70. The area was thriving with lots of shops and restaurants.

Downtown Rifle.
Finally getting off of I-70, we did our grocery shopping in Eagle and then made our way to Sylvan Lake State Park. We were initially concerned that we were going the wrong way as we passed upscale homes, a golf course, and a number of high end shops. Finally it became obvious that we were going in the right direction when we started climbing a canyon and there were fewer signs of civilization.
When we arrive that state park we were excited to see that our campground was next to an alpine lake. We parked at our site and immediately went to check things out. Because the park is so close to town, it had a large day use area and allowed non-motorized boats and paddle boards. Even though it was July 4th, there really weren’t many people there. The breeze probably limited the number of paddle boarders, considering the few we saw had been pushed to the other side of the lake.

Sylvan Lake.
We spent the rest of the day walking around the lake looking for interesting birds and relaxing at our campsite. We watched the sun set over the mountains and then were chased inside by chilly temps. We climbed into bed with anticipation of seeing the stars when nature called hours later. They didn’t disappoint.

As an aside, it obvious that many of the towns we’ve passed had been founded based on the natural resources they were exploiting. They had names like Phosphorus, Sulfur, Gypsum, Leadville, and so on.

A Fictional Golf Story, about Billy and David
Like Magic, As they were finishing up their game, a sudden gust of wind swept through the clouds, causing both Billy and David to lose their balance. As they stumbled, their golf balls suddenly began to glow brighter and brighter until they were both engulfed in a blinding light.
When the light finally faded, Billy and David found themselves standing on a lush, green fairway with a breathtaking view of the cloud-covered landscape below. They couldn't believe their eyes - they were now playing golf on a golf course in the clouds!
Excitedly, they teed off, their golf balls leaving trails of red and green light as they soared through the air. The course was unlike anything they had ever seen before - there were floating islands, water hazards filled with sparkling mist, and sand traps made of fluffy white clouds.
As they played, Billy and David couldn't help but feel a sense of exhilaration and freedom. The air was crisp and clean, and the sun shone brightly overhead. It was a truly magical experience, unlike anything they had ever experienced on Earth.
The score kept going back and forth, with Billy and David teasing each other playfully as they tried to outdo one another. But in the end, it was Billy who emerged victorious, making an eagle on the final hole to win by just one stroke.
As they shook hands and congratulated each other on a great game, Billy and David knew that they had just experienced something truly special. They couldn't wait to come back and play on the cloud golf course again, already planning their next match and imagining all the incredible adventures that awaited them in the skies above.
