@CoachCarvelUM - My favorite book of all time. It has helped me so much as a coach and leader of young men. The author, James Kerr, learned that we use his book to build our culture and wanted to visit UMass Hockey. What a day!!

Minutemen Outlast Warriors
North Andover, MA – The Massachusetts Minutemen rode 26 saves from freshman goalie Michael Hrabal and two-point nights from juniors Lucas Mercuri and Scott Morrow to a 3-2 win over the Merrimack Warriors in front of 2,314 at J. Thom Lawler Arena on the Merrimack campus.  Cole O’Hara gave the visiting Minutemen the early 1-0 lead when he deposited a Jack Musa cross-crease pass past Zachary…

Tumblr media
Highlights from the stream:
Here are the anecdotes shared during the epic draw-fest. Nearly all of them have been shared elsewhere at least once, but the new ones for me were about Greg Universe's orientation and the prototypical name for what Steven and Pearl's Fusion was going to be.
Rebecca Sugar loved Peridot's floating fingers and wanted to do all kinds of fun things with them before they would be gone forever. That's why we see her making arrows with them and biting them nervously in the episode right before she loses them.
When selecting clips for promotional use, they tried to be super careful about not picking anything that would show Peridot's real hands before the reveal had been aired. They didn't want a promo to accidentally ruin that surprise.
Tumblr media
While doing the show they had an "eye theory" where the three main Gems would always have a different number of eyes showing. Pearl had both her eyes visible; Amethyst usually had one covered; and Garnet had either no eyes showing or three eyes showing.
With Rebecca and Ian's decision to get married and the characters Ruby and Sapphire being based on them, they figured well, of course now they have to get married too. (Though Rebecca and Ian got to do so AFTER their characters did!)
Tumblr media
One of Rebecca's "post-Future theories" is that Steven gets a Gibson Hummingbird guitar.
Cookie Cat was originally based off of Cookie Puss, a very strange Carvell ice cream cake. It had a complicated backstory, which was appropriate for working with their own characters' complicated backstory. The branding and packaging of the Cookie Cat is important within the show.
Tumblr media
Jeff Liu composed the Cookie Cat theme on a Game Boy and pitched it.
Rebecca has a "theory" regarding how Steven and Connie's faces kind of "fit together" with Connie's face sticking out at the top and Steven's face sticking out at the bottom.
Rebecca used to do a lot of fan comics, and learned a lot about storytelling while practicing with others' worlds and characters. They love when people make things based on these characters.
Tumblr media
The original appearance of Rainbow Quartz was inspired by a music video from the Cars that Rebecca loved when they were younger. The Cars are referenced a lot throughout the show because their videos were a huge inspiration to Rebecca.
Lapis is very much based on a character from one of Rebecca's comics from the art school days.
Everybody on the Crew had different ideas of how Steven's head connected to his body and how his hair worked; Rebecca felt that they learned from everyone's various ideas.
If you've heard that Rebecca was against Finn being in a relationship while working on Adventure Time, that is not true. Rebecca worked on lots of the Flame Princess episodes. Finn and Flame Princess were still together when Rebecca left the show (last episode "Simon and Marcy").
Tumblr media
Greg Universe's sexuality was never explicitly stated on the show, but Rebecca thinks of him as sexually fluid. Regarding him as bisexual is also completely valid--and appreciated by Rebecca as a bisexual creator who puts lots of their own personal traits into characters and feels that bisexual characters are pretty rare. Greg's gender on the show is pretty solidly established as male, so Ian says he is probably not gender fluid, but Rebecca is fine with alternate headcanons about that too.
Some of the earliest concept art from "Mr. Greg" was everybody in suits. Getting everyone in a suit was a primary agenda.
Everyone also wanted Connie to have a Space Camp outfit in the earliest concepts for her design in the movie.
Rebecca used to love doing signings while doing the show because it was like a chance to come up for air and go back to work energized by knowing how many people were touched by the show.
Rebecca Sugar wanted Pink Diamond to feel a bit influenced/inspired, design-wise, by the work of Iwao Takamoto. Rebecca loved his work in the Hanna-Barbera Alice in Wonderland and on Sleeping Beauty.
Tumblr media
Rebecca drew the rough of the poster's art and Danny Hynes did the colors. Rebecca loves that they got to do this poster because they didn't get to do the final Comic Con with any art depicting Future or beyond (the finale of Future coincided with the emergence of Covid, so everything was closed down), so this is their way of "going rogue" and doing it!
An early prototype of a Steven/Pearl Fusion was called Coral. Rebecca said maybe they could share some drawings of this Fusion sometime. Rebecca shared this factoid with the viewers while drawing Rainbow Quartz 2.0, and mentioned that Ian boarded the scenes including their introduction.
Rebecca would often draw Garnet with a huge smile on her face whenever Garnet was the requested character--even before Garnet had made an expression like that on any aired episode. They had to be careful not to drop any Garnet lore before viewers knew what her center was about. For the short period before "Alone Together" had aired that they were doing conventions, some people were getting mysteriously grinning Garnets and not being familiar with that expression, but once the episodes aired, they understood for sure.
Tumblr media
Shelby Rabara, Peridot's voice actor, is a professional dancer, and she choreographed the tap-dancing in "Mr. Greg" as well as provided the foot-taps that you actually hear in the show during the dancing.
Rebecca thinks of art and writing as just two different ways of expressing what you mean--they're not exactly as different from each other as most people think.
Everyone on the Crew was so excited about Steven's neck as an older teen. Mainly because figuring out how Steven's head joins to his body was an issue in original SU.
Unfortunately, while it was also kinda nice to see so many people enjoying Rebecca's drawings and commentary, there was a lot of rudeness and obnoxiousness in the chat. I know, I know, it's expected; I too live on the internet. But I'm disappointed to say the chat was full of people demanding Black Diamond, or repeating their own name and what character they want every 3 seconds (like, literally, pasting it over and over again for a long period of time), or harassing them about "weird Ed Edd and Eddy art," or spamming "REBECCA WHAT WAS IN THE CHEST," or wanting constantly for them to say hi to them personally, or repeatedly asking if Rebecca has read Homestuck. Or even writing snotty things like "maybe you should stop drawing and get up and give us a new season." Holy shit. can u not
(I didn't want to get a live-signed one, but I did get one of these to be sketched later! Mine is supposed to get Lion on it. I love Rebecca and the SU crew for bringing us new art and fun discussions in 2024.)

Bloody Hell, three stories/chapters up. Now I can concentrate on auction winners!
Holy Water Never Works, from a Tumblr prompt, for our teeny tiny Dalgliesh Fandom, wherein Adam is a Vampire.
The next chapter of Tis Folly to be Wise is up, Sins of the Father part 2, wherein Greg finally finds out who his father is.
I've just altered the ending slightly, so please re-read. I missed a bit!
And finally, because I am totally gone on Bertie Carvel at the moment (and no, I've not lost loyalty to Mystrade, I've just added another obsession to the list!), I have written a Babylon (TV series) fic, Sins of the Father (yes, I used the title again), with Finn Kirkwood and Liz Garvey. I'm just proving I'm completely off my nut, because I've never watched it. I've seen clips, and I have a good idea of their characters (I hope), and this is an AU, because with a high stress job like that, somethings gotta give.
Be warned, the Dalgliesh and Babylon fics are both rated Explicit and are definitely NSFW.

story time.
On the 19th of April in the lord’s year 2005, my mother thought I had a horrible brain trauma.
It began as a normal enough day—I was your average uninterested high school student, I was going to only half my scheduled classes, and I had recently convinced my now wife—then good-student great-influence friend—to walk back into a class I had ditched to retrieve my jacket that I had forgotten therein.
(She still won’t let me live down how the teacher had cornered her, and read her the riot act so that she might in turn read it to me, but I digress.)
The school day was coming to a close and one of the upperclassmen—a girl-woman of an amazon named Christine—invited me to come to an impromptu party at our mutual friend Meredith’s house. I had nothing to do and no plans to do any work assigned to me, so I agreed and off we went.
I feel like it needs to be mentioned that Christine had a bright red Jeep Wrangler with a tongue decaled on the side and the spare tire covered in a wrap declaring it the “Kiss Mobile!”
We picked up the boy I dated for a lukewarm forty five second the year prior before he realized his mother liked me better—no, seriously, when he moved to another state she asked if my mother would allow her to have temporary guardianship so I could move with them, again, I digress—and off we went.
Neither me, or Greg—the boy—were of age to drink legally, but no one in the suburbs cares about that.
When we arrived there were already eight to ten cars parked on the lawn—this is an absolutely unremarkable Tuesday in spring, mind you.
We drink a little, we dance, and once there was enough liquor involved we decided the party could only get better if it became a toga party.
Now, most people might have methods to tie togas so they’d stay in place—but a handful of drunk suburban babies don’t have those skills.
So we stapled them to ourselves.
Opening a pretty hefty office stapler, we slapped the prongs against each other’s backs until the little metal teeth dug into our skin and kept the togas in place. We took Meredith’s beta fish from his lovely little bowl and put him into a pair of platform shoes that were meant to be filled with water for—I don’t know—effect, probably.
“Behold! I am Jesus Christ, walking upon water!”
Nevertheless someone showed up with two carvel cakes and more beer. We ate cake by the literal fistful and played a far too dangerous game of darts in her basement.
But everyone knows drunk people always want something—the more off the wall, the better.
We wanted Jello.
One of the four responsible people—sober and loving it—offered to drive us to the supermarket so that we might procure jello. We stumble into cars and after almost forty minutes we returned—packs, on packs, on packs of Jello mix in our possession.
We read the instructions, skip the steps we don’t like, and then we have Jello.
Well, we have colored and flavored water—apparently it takes hours to set.
We sip the very-hot flavored liquid and it fills none of our needs—our desires hardly quenched, we tried to improve on the situation we find ourselves. We start adding.
Sprinkles, tabasco sauce, pickles—anything and everything was on the table.
“Hey,” someone—I can neither confirm nor deny that it might’ve been me—says mid-way through consuming pickle filled lime Jello liquid (green on green, you know?). “What if we, I don’t know, snorted the mix?”
We still had packs, on packs, on packs of Jello powder left—we had, truly, bought way too many boxes.
All the cowards—intelligent humans—plead out and it was left up to me and that statuesque girl-woman of an amazon, Christine. I picked raspberry because I surmised—in my underage drunken haze—that it would have the nicest “nose feel”. We aimed to make lovely lines of powder on the tables—not with credit cards because we were children, but high-school IDs—and rolled stiff one dollar bills.
To this day that raspberry Jello mix is the only thing—other than pool water—that has gone that far up my nose. It was fine enough of a powder that it was easy enough, prompting me to go three lines in.
With that being done, I was sufficiently out of bad ideas—or so I thought—and me and Greg—the boy—started to walk home. We both lived only about five minutes from Meredith’s house, so the slight drizzle didn’t seem that bad.
Oh, it got bad.
Deluges of rain started only a minute after we left and we were immediately soaked to the bone. Water logged in my JNCO oversized denims and well-chosen Coheed and Cambria hoodie, I realized I wasn’t out of bad ideas.
Me and Greg would switch pants.
Why? To this day I don’t know, but it seemed imperative at the time that we did.
Though he was—at least—five sizes larger, I steadfastly held them up with one fist while he wiggled into my oddly-small-yet-oversized denims. We laughed, we cried, and then when we hit the main road, we parted ways.
I entered my house carefully, stealthily, not wanting to wake my mother if she was asleep—she wasn’t. She was watching television, something stupid looking—and I was counting steps, and carefully rolling my tongue so that I might coherently express my need to go immediately to my room for no untoward reason.
Of course, that was aborted immediately as I watch plumbs of white smoke drift lazily across the screen—standing there, dripping on my mother’s carpet. I ask her what she’s watching, still not facing her.
“White smoke,” she replies, as I turn toward her. “It means they elected—Oh my God! What happened?! Did you fall off your bicycle?”
Now, you need to understand that when you have a traumatic brain injury one of the many signs you can look for is something called CSF—cerebrospinal fluid—also known as a “halo”. It is a clear oily looking liquid that can leak out of your nose or ears.
My mother works in the emergency room, she’s very keen on these things.
Apparently, raspberry Jello mix looks startlingly close to cerebrospinal fluid when it has started leaking out of your nose. And I can’t blame my mother for assuming head injury before snorting food powders, but I was just this side of drunk that I wasn’t putting any of that together.
“S’raspberry,” I slur while wiping it at my nose.
This, of course, doesn’t give her any reason to not assume I’m somehow concussed—the slurring and wobbling didn’t help either. She sat me down while I watched the smoke on the screen, and started doing field tests to see what was wrong. She eventually just realized I was a drunk idiot toddler with a penchant for bad ideas.
And that’s why I’ll never forget what day Pope Benedict XVI was elected.

Stop but like this UMass program as a whole has come so far in the last five years: In 2016 they hired Greg Carvel after the team had 5 wins and 29 losses for the 15-16 season, they got Cale Makar as a freshman for the 17-18 season, went to the teams first-ever Frozen Four in the 18-19 season only to have a BRUTAL loss to UMD in the National Championship in 2019, and then everyone had the season shut down before the tournament could be played in 2020. Then 2021 comes, the season doesn't start until January, and they win every single game from mid-January until tonight, where it took them winning in overtime against UMD thanks to Trivigno and Waite to even get here, and then beating St. Cloud for their first EVER NCAA hockey championship, the second D1 championship in school history. I'm so fucking proud of them oh my god

Minnesota Dethrones Massachusetts in OT
Minnesota Dethrones Massachusetts in OT
Golden Gophers claw back in 3rd period.  Worcester, MA – Late game heroics saved the Minnesota Golden Gophers season and ended the Massachusetts Minutemen’s. After spotting the Minutemen a two-goal lead in the first period, Minnesota tied the game with 6:43 left in regulation on a slapshot from freshman Matthew Knies. Then would knock-off the defending National Champions 4-3 at 8:31 of overtime…

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts hockey has signed 6'2", 187-pound forward Peyton Reeves to a National Letter of Intent, UMass head coach Greg Carvel announced on Wednesday. Reeves becomes the first member of the Minutemen's incoming freshman class for the 2019-20 campaign after playing the past four full seasons with the Oakville Blades of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) "Peyton is a good-sized power forward who skates well and will help our team play with an edge and a physical presence," said Carvel. "He had a breakout year with Oakville averaging a point per-game, serving as team captain and leading his team to an OJHL Championship. He is a leader and high character kid, the type you need to win." Reeves totaled 115 points on 57 goals and 58 assists over 185 regular season games with Oakville and played in an additional 61 games in postseason play with 47 points (14g, 33a) in those contests. This past season the Toronto, Ontario, native captained Oakville to an OJHL Championship and an RBC Cup appearance after finishing the regular season with 45 points in 45 games (18g, 27a). He ranked second for the Blades in playoff scoring with five goals and 18 assists for 23 points over 19 contests.

Ransomware (2021)
Format: A single episode of the live-action comedy news show Last Week Tonight.
Directors: Paul Pennolino and Christopher Werner.
Writers: Johnathan Appel, Ali Barthwell, Tim Carvell, Liz Hynes, Greg Iwinski,  Mark Kramer, Daniel O'Brien, John Oliver, Owen Parsons, Charlie Redd, Joanna Rothkopf, Chrissy Shackelford, Ben Silva, and Seena Vali.
Is J.K. Simmons in this? His voice is in this.
Who does he portray? Himself, or a version of himself with strong opinions about the best way to protect against ransomware attacks.
What does he do? He informs the viewer about how best to protect oneself against ransomware attacks.
How bald is he? Unknown, we only hear his voice.
Is anybody else in this? Well, it’s not a radio show, so at the very least other people appear on the screen.
Is it worth seeing if I’m not a J.K. Simmons completist? Yes, it’s a reasonably funny and very informative show. There are occasional jokes that I don’t really care for, and sometimes they push a little harder for the laugh when they should be pushing to inform, but that’s mostly my personal taste. It doesn’t make the show bad.

CANTLON: (3/19) UCONN WINS SEMIFINAL GAME
Tumblr media
BY Gerry Cantlon, Howlings BOSTON, MA - At 3:06 of overtime, sophomore Aaron Bohlinger’s shot from the left point went off the UCONN’s Jachym Kondelik and sailed past a thoroughly screened Darion Hanson to give UMASS a 2-1 victory and the Hockey East championship for the second year in a row. UCONN was unable to get the puck out of their zone. First, UMASS’s Anthony Del Gaizo came down from the right point forcing Kevin O’Neil to lose the puck. Then UMASS MVP Bobby Trivigno fished the puck out and backhanded a pass across the ice to Bohlinger from deep in the right-wing corner. A right-handed shot, Bohlinger sent a perfect shot on the net as Del Gaizo converged with teammate Garret Wait around Roman Kinal, thoroughly screened Hanson. Bohlinger hadn’t scored since last year’s NCAA title game. “Well, first I would like to congratulate Greg (UMASS Head Coach Greg Carvel) and UMASS on winning. We clawed; we fought and hung in there to try to win our first tile, but it wasn’t meant to be. Simply put, UMASS played better than we did. The puck has eyes sometime in overtime,” said UCONN Head Coach Mike Cavanaugh. Kondelik was trying to block the shot but had it go off his left arm into the top part of the net, ending UCONN’s season. With a record of 20-16-0 overall, 16-11-0 in HEA, the team ends one of the program’s deepest runs of any of its teams in its short Hockey East history. The loss means the Huskies will miss out on a Hockey East championship and a berth in the national tournament. The UMASS (21-12-2 overall, 17-8-2 HEA) Minutemen are the defending national champions and earn one of the automatic NCAA regional bids based on winning the conference championship. The regionals this year are in Albany, NY, Worcester, MA, Loveland, CO, and Allentown, PA. THIRD PERIOD The third period was an extraordinary tight-checking affair as UCONN was held to just two shots for the period and twenty for the game. They saw their shot at a championship game go to OT for the first time in 13 years. However, UCONN could not match their game to UMASS, who smothered the Huskies and were willing to grind it out for the 63-plus minutes. “We had a hard time sustaining offensive pressure. Ironically, we had decided to change our forechecking patterns in overtime. We tried to change things up because nothing was working. They’re a good team. They kept up the pressure,” a downcast Cavanaugh said. SCORING Vladislav Firstov, a Hockey East All-Tournament pick, and a Minnesota Wild draft choice, scored the game’s first goal, the third-straight game UCONN tallied first. John Spetz, an all-tournament selection, was also at the right point. His shot was going wide, but Firstov made an NHL-like re-direct between his legs and through the five-hole of the screened Matt Murray (19 saves). It was his 12th goal of the year. Trivigno tied the game at 16:06 of the second with his 20th goal and showed why he is one of the ten finalists in the Hobey Baker conversation. Trivigno caught UCONN in a bad change at center ice on the left-wing side. He received a pass from Colin Felix and was wide-open to go to the net. He took off for the net with speed and ripped one off the inside of the left pad of Hanson, evening the score at one. INJURED D-MAN UCONN was stronger on the puck in the second period. However, despite the rise in play, they suffered a setback as they lost defenseman Jarrod Gourley for the game as he got dinged off his helmet with the puck when it hit him with his back to the play. The referee told him to stay down until the UCONN trainer came out. Jake Flynn and Marc Gatcomb helped escort him off the ice. In the first period, the Minutemen possessed the puck for most of the period. Hanson continued his strong post season staying square to the shooters and a top of the blue paint area. He made a vital stop on a bouncing puck off the ice at 9:47 on Marc Del Gaizo and stopped Darien’s Scott Morrow from the left point on another and Oliver MacDonald with a tip-in attempt. “He was great,” Cavanaugh said. “He gave us a chance to win the game. He played great. He was outstanding not only tonight, but all season for us.” UCONN scoring chances were few and far between. They had a two-on-one with Kondelik and Firstov. However, Kondelik’s backhanded shot at the end of a PK hit the side of the net. MORE STRONG PLAY Chase Bradley had a solid first period making the other 31 NHL teams wonder how he got to the seventh round for the Detroit Red Wings. Bradley had strong hits on Trivigno behind the UCONN net but took a penalty for his hit in front of the UCONN bench at the end of the period. Bradley plastered Lucas Mercuri in the right-wing corner of the UMASS zone that left him dazed after the contact. Cavanaugh ended his post-game presser philosophically. “The precious things in life are non-transactional. You can’t put a price tag on the experiences those twenty guys just had. They did many exceptional things this season.” However, one accomplishment did elude them, and that was for a chance to skate around the TD Garden with the Lamoriello Trophy.
