TOWNES
TOWNES is the stage name of Matt Radich (MR), who just recently released his third EP, appropriately titled III, early February. We caught up about dream tour-mates, working with producers, and the saxophone presence in his songs. Give his latest recording a spin and read on for more!

Latest Release: EP III (EP, February 2018)
Upcoming shows: Stay tuned!
SA: How did you get your start in music? MR:  I took saxophone lessons starting when I was about 10 years old. Then about a year later I started to play bass guitar. Quit saxophone when I was 15/16, but recently started playing again.
SA: What bands, musicians or artists would you cite as the biggest influences on your sound? MR:  The first reason I decided to play solo was because of a guy named Diamond Rings. He made a record called Special Affections in 2010, and when he was touring it he played all the shows alone. I had only been in Ottawa for 8 months or so, and I didn't really know many people who I could be in a band with, but I knew I wanted to play shows and record music. A lot of my influence has also come from artists like Beck, William Onyeabor, TV on the Radio, and Dusty Springfield. Although my music isn't significantly similar sonically, I think there are certain aspects about each of these artists that have an appeal to me. For example, I think Dusty Springfield's songwriting is incredibly simple and classic, about as classic the craft of songwriting can get. That's definitely something I tried to approach on parts of my new EP. I was also listening to a lot of Underworld when I was writing this EP, so maybe some of that comes through on it.
SA: Thus far in your career, what has been your biggest success? MR:  Opening for Holy Fuck was a pretty big deal for me. It was part of the JunoFest weekend that happened when the awards were in town. It was a big deal because Holy Fuck were a band I had liked since I was pretty young, so having the opportunity to open for them was amazing. Ottawa Bluesfest was also a pretty important show for me. Even though I played within the theatre of the war museum, I was the same day as Flume and Lil Yachty, so that was pretty cool. The day itself will probably be known as one of the most infamous days in Bluesfest's history because of all the gate-hopping and hospitalizations, but I think I played well for the group of people that came out to see my set.
SA: On the other hand, what is the biggest challenge you have faced, and how have you dealt with it? MR: Making this new EP was a pretty big challenge. It took a while to end up with the producers I ended up working with, Bill Lepine and Will Brisebois of Scoreboard Recordings, but I'm happy I ended up working with them. I also think generally writing alone can be pretty difficult. If I get stuck, there's not really much I can do to progress a song so I'll have to put it aside or completely dump the idea. Luckily, my friend Gabe Roberge, who is the local electronic artist Frayd, is always open to hearing some of my early stuff and helping me with feedback.
SA: How do you approach the song-writing process? MR: My songs usually start with one of two things. I either write a song starting on guitar, then write all the instrumentation that would go around that, or I start with a bass line played on a synthesizer. Lyrics always come last for me.
SA: I understand you are originally from Oakville. What are your thoughts on the Ottawa music scene? MR: I think it's underappreciated for sure. There's a lot of bands and artists making great music. I think there's definitely a lot of opportunities in Ottawa to play good shows too. Even more so than cities like Montreal or Toronto. Sure, those cities are known for acts breaking out into the mainstream and what not, but in Ottawa I think it's easier to play shows beyond the self-booked level. For example, when I open for an act that's touring and coming through Ottawa, it's incredibly unlikely that an act my size would open for them in Montreal or Toronto. Festivals like Ottawa Bluesfest also are insanely generous to local acts.
SA: You have just released your EP, III. What's your favourite moment on the EP, and why? MR: I think the chorus of Tambourine is the best chorus I've ever written, so that might be my favourite.
SA: You've recently played shows with diverse acts, from the Elwins to David Liebe Hart. If you had a dream tour, which 3 artists would be a part of it, and why? MR:  A tour with me on it? Pulp would have to reunite. The other two would be Soulwax and Future Islands.
SA: For someone who hasn’t heard your music before, what is the ideal situation in which to listen to your music? MR:  My music is best live. I think that my personality comes through best in a live setting.
SA: Post EP release What comes next for you in 2018? We wish you all the best, and good luck! MR: I'm hoping to do a vinyl release of this EP, which would definitely come much later in the year. I've got two music videos coming out too, and by the time this is published they'll probably be out. They were shot and edited by Nicholas Wandel, a Ryerson film school graduate. I hope to play a lot of shows this year and hope that a lot of people who haven't seen me live before get the chance to. I'll continue writing songs, this time with 100% more saxophone than EP 3.
