Cerebral Palsy (CP): Growth Disorders and Walking Ability ‍
Cerebral palsy (CP) can indeed be associated with growth disorders in children. However, it's important to note that this doesn't apply to all children with BMI, and that growth disorders can vary considerably depending on the severity of BMI, the type of motor impairment and other individual factors.
Why can BMI affect growth?
Several factors can contribute to growth disorders in children with BMI:
- Feeding difficulties ️: Motor disorders can make feeding difficult, leading to inadequate food intake and nutritional deficiencies that can affect growth.
- Swallowing disorders : Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) can also lead to reduced calorie intake and difficulties absorbing nutrients essential for growth.
- Increased energy expenditure: Involuntary movements and spasticity can increase a child's energy expenditure, which may require a higher caloric intake to ensure normal growth.
- Medications: Some medications used to treat BMI-related disorders, such as anticonvulsants, may have side effects that affect growth.
- Lack of mobility: Lack of mobility and physical activity can lead to reduced muscle mass and impaired bone growth.
- Hormonal factors: In some cases, hormonal disorders may be associated with BMI and affect growth.

How do growth disorders manifest themselves?
Growth disorders in children with BMI can manifest themselves in different ways:
- Statural growth retardation: The child may be shorter than children of the same age.
- Weight growth retardation: the child may weigh less than expected for his or her age.
- Microcephaly: The size of the head may be smaller than normal.
- Growth asymmetry: One part of the body may grow more slowly than the other.
What to do in the event of growth problems?
If you notice growth problems in your child with BMI, it's important to consult a doctor. The doctor will be able to assess your child's growth, look for possible causes and suggest appropriate treatment.
Management of growth disorders may include :
- Optimizing diet: ensuring adequate caloric intake and a balanced diet, possibly with the help of a dietician.
- Management of swallowing disorders: Implement strategies to facilitate eating and ensure proper hydration.
- Physiotherapy: Promote mobility and physical activity to stimulate muscle and bone growth.
- Treatment of associated disorders: Manage disorders that could affect growth, such as hormonal disorders or digestive problems.
- Regular monitoring: Regularly monitor the child's growth to adjust management if necessary.
Can people with BMI walk?
Walking ability varies considerably in people with cerebral palsy (CP). It is impossible to generalize, as Cerebral Palsy presents in different forms and with varying degrees of severity.
 Factors influencing walking ability
- Type and severity of motor impairment: Some forms of CMI may allow relatively independent walking, while others may make walking impossible.
- Functioning of the lower limbs: Muscular strength, coordination and mobility of the legs and feet are decisive factors in walking.
- Presence of associated disorders: Disorders such as spasticity, muscular contractures, orthopedic deformities or balance disorders can hamper walking.
- Treatment and rehabilitation: Early and appropriate treatment can considerably improve walking ability.
Walking possibilities
- Independent walking: Some people with CMI can walk independently, without technical aids.
- Walking with technical aids: The use of canes, crutches, walkers or other technical aids may enable some people to walk.
- Impossible walking: In the most severe cases, walking may be impossible. However, this does not mean an absence of mobility, as manual or electric wheelchairs can be used.
It is important to note that :
- Each person is unique: BMI manifests itself differently in each individual.
- Progress is possible: Even if walking is difficult or impossible at first, progress can be made through rehabilitation and appropriate care.
- Quality of life is paramount: The main objective is to improve the person's quality of life, by promoting autonomy, social inclusion and well-being, regardless of walking ability.
Conclusion
Walking ability in people with BMI is highly variable. The key is to provide individualized care to enable each person to develop their full potential and live life to the full.
