Postcards from Snagglepuss
Kind of makes you look small--or can it?
OFF GUANA CAY, ABACOS ISLANDS, BAHAMAS: If ever there was a rather impressive dive spot to end all dive spots in The Bahamas, it would have to be a reef on the north side of Guana Cay in the Abacos group of the Bahamas known as "The Skyscrapers." Sitting in waters as reach 60 feet deep, with coral reaching literally to the ocean surface, one will certainly try and feel impressed by the sheer looks of such being not unlike a small city situated underwater.
Or am I getting a little too Trollkins for myself here?
Yet even with the looks of The Skyscrapers, care certainly needs to be taken in navigating. And you can never tell when a black-tipped reef shark will come along, let alone Jabberjaw ... but maybe for another time, as the Diver's Delight, the craft of the Peter Potamus Magic Divers, makes anchor off Guana Cay, the name prompting Mildew Wolf to wisecrack whether it would have been much amusing if it were named "Guano Cay." Until Peter pointed out that "guano" is another term for dung--especially such used as fertiliser.
And as I said, considering that many of the coral structures of The Skyscrapers reach to the ocean surface, care has to be taken with the approach.
And was it a dive for the books, videos even ... yet you wouldn't want to attempt an underwater game of "hide-and-go-seek" in this particular reef. Even with the Divin' Wolf Pups, who for some reason seemed attracted to some of the reef life hemmed in between rather hefty coral walls. And given just how narrow some of the passages in The Skyscrapers can get, it was understandable that Peter Potamus, considering his bulk (even for the leader of such a fascinating dive troupe), managed to crawl through one especially narrow passage ... diving on his side. And with barely an inch or so of his frame to spare, even with moray eels and black-tip reef sharks somehow seeing their share of fascination at such a sight. (Let's just hope any footage which Squiddly Diddly captured wasn't of an embarrassing sort.)
Yet then again, you can't help but wonder what can make the Bahamas so divable ... and there's some more to note here, fellow Hanna-Barberians!

This island is known as home of the "Friendly People" and promises a paradise and all the magical experiences you can have in such a beautiful place! It's also known as the smallest landmass where two nations exist, giving you the experience of both a tropical paradise and cosmopolitan city living. And with the relaxed energy and rhythm of the island, it'll be a daycation you won't soon forget. Here are some of the island features to partake in:
Natural Pool: The nature-made wonder called Natural Pool or David's Cupper is an absolute must for both nature lovers and thrill seekers. During a hike to the pools, you get the scenery of beautiful green hills and rocky views on one side of the path, and a glimpse of the ocean on the other. Take a swim in the pool protected from crashing waves and filled with coral shrimp and sea urchins before taking the hike back.
Seaside Nature Park: Take a tour through 30 acres of unspoiled nature here at Seaside Nature Park. You have your choice of riding horseback or hiking through the wilderness, and they also offer activities such as a playground and a pet farm for the whole family to have a great time with hand-feeding and petting ducks, goats, and miniature horses.
Green Cay Beach: Many areas in St. Maarten provide undisturbed landscapes for visitors to enjoy, and Green Cay Beach is one that offers access to coral reefs via snorkeling, or just the beautiful backdrop of a sunset over natural terrain. And with options such a kayaking, paddleboarding, or just relaxing on the beach, Green Cay aims to give everyone an incredible experience.
Rainforest Adventure Park: The rainforest park on the island is designed to give each visitor an unique experience while providing a sustainable use of the environment. Each visitor can tour each of the attractions and beauty of the rainforests with the provided viewing platforms. And there are also the options of ziplining, riding in the sky explorer, or the hill zip and schnoor ride to see the views!
Parrote Ville Bird Sanctuary and Museum: This is one of many animal sanctuaries on the island to explore and learn about all of our island wildlife. The Parrote Ville Bird Sanctuary is where you can learn about over 25 species of the most friendly and colorful birds during a walk through of the center.
Back Bay & Guana Bay: This hiking path takes visitors along the east coast of the Dutch Side, along a 2.6 km trail. And you can choose which paths to take between Back Bay and Guana Bay. During the hike, you'll see local fauna and flora, cacti, and may even see a goat or two in your path!
Fort Amsterdam: Visit a little of history in touring this location, location near the capital of the island, Phillipsburg. Built by the Dutch in 1631, the fortification was attacked and conquered by the Spaniards in 1633.
Fort Louis: Another place on the island that provides a little of history can be found at Fort Louis. This is a French military fort built in the 18th century to defend the French side of the island from enemy attacks. With its surroundings of green rolling hills and blue sky, it's the perfect place both to unwind and learn something new about the island's history.
Once again, these are only suggestions, and you're welcome to peruse the website and make your own itinerary for the island!

Bahama Cruise 2022, Part 13, April 8, Sand Castle, Little Bay, Jacks Bay Cove.
Tumblr media
Walking by Lorraine’s Restaurant on the way back to the dinghy. Lorraine’s mom lives in the small house behind the restaurant. Ms. Rolle is known on the island as the “bread lady”. You have to get there early for the fresh bread which cost $8.
Tumblr media
We started the day with fresh cinnamon raisin bread from Ms. Rolle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here we end the day with a drink at Lorraine’s. Lorraine’s is a cruisers hangout. “Killer” is the bartender who specializes in his famous rum drinks, he invents. He keeps an entire whiteboard with the names and ingredients.
Conversation at the laundromat today was the sever weather coming in tomorrow, with high winds blowing from the North West. So we fled the harbor early the next day. It was totally exposed to NW winds.
Tumblr media
We hugged the coast to the south and anchored close by the “sand castle”, in Little Bay. So the anchorage filled up shortly as this was the best protection from the impending winds. Note the sailboat grounded on the beach in front of the castle. Unfortunately it has been there for years. Probably there for many more years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nancy on the local swing looking over the anchorage. From here we crossed over the island to the far shore.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The trail and small beach on the sound side.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Carl Allan and his boats show up to escape the storm. First was “Axis” a Damen Support boat for his toys. Which includes his personal deep diving submarine, jet skies, flats skiffs, etc. Then “Gigi” a Westport 164. “Gigi” is named for his wife. Smart man!
After awhile a very nice sportfish pulled up in front of us in protected water. They were transferring some people to the “tender”. While they were distracted and drifting downwind. They were about to hit our bow. But the Captain realized it before I had to blow the air horn. Turns out “Frigate” is part of Carl’s fleet. So he could have paid for the damages.
Carl has a great reputation and has helped the Bahamas out a lot after Hurricane Dorian. He is so well liked by the Bahamian government that a Bahamian gun ship is usually found nearby. In the morning, we watched the tender drop off some goodies to the crew of Bahamas Defense Force boat.
Tumblr media
The squall line came in before dark. We danced around on deck soaping up and washing down. First shower in three weeks, since Bimini. How nice, even if it was cold rain.
Tumblr media
We had a comfortable night on the hook. No worries of dragging. Sunrise the next day dawned clear and calm.
Tumblr media
Winds would be light and the anchorage was too crowed for us, so we headed south down Great Guana. This mega yacht was nestled into the rocks with lines to shore and a couple of anchors off the bow. Pretty cool!
We found a nice sand beach at Jacks Bay Cove. Some cruisers leaving the Bahamas said this was their favorite beach. I would have to agree with them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nancy can’t pass up a swing, so here she is….swinging back and forth. We took the cruisers trail to the sound side. Scrub brush is about hip high with a well used easily followed sand trail.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nancy had to play mountain goat and climb the hill.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back on the bank side we explored the beach from one end to the other. On the north end is a great little cave to bury treasure in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a quick dinghy run exploring the shore lines with its undercut rocks we returned to the boat.
Tumblr media
This ends the day,
S/V Sea Breeze, Jacks Bay Cove, Great Guana Cay, Exuma.

Beyond the Beach: Unforgettable Boat Tours in Turks and Caicos
Turks and Caicos: a name synonymous with powder-soft sand, turquoise waters, and endless sunshine. But beyond the allure of lounging on postcard-perfect beaches lies a treasure trove of unforgettable adventures waiting to be discovered. And no experience embodies this spirit quite like a boat tour. So, grab your swimsuit, sunscreen, and sense of wonder, because we're about to embark on a journey across the cerulean seas of Turks and Caicos.
Dive into a Kaleidoscope of Colors:
Snorkel with Gentle Giants: Witness the awe-inspiring grace of humpback whales during their winter migration. Glide alongside them in the crystal-clear waters off Grand Turk, feeling the spray of their blowholes and the power of their movements.
Explore Coral Kingdoms: Plunge into a vibrant underwater world teeming with life. Dive vibrant coral reefs like Grand Turk Wall or Chalk Sound National Park, where fish dart between colorful formations and playful dolphins might join your adventure.
Unravel Shipwreck Mysteries: History whispers from the depths. Explore the sunken remnants of shipwrecks like the Molasses Reef wreck or the MV Turks & Caicos. Imagine the tales these silent sentinels could tell of maritime adventures and bygone eras.
Island Hopping and Nature's Playground:
Sail the Turquoise Seas: Hop aboard a catamaran or sailboat and set sail on an island-hopping adventure. Discover hidden coves, pristine beaches, and secluded cays accessible only by water. Picture the sun warming your skin and the gentle breeze carrying the scent of the sea as you navigate this archipelago paradise.
Conch Cruise Delights: Immerse yourself in the local culture with a conch cruise. Learn about the fascinating world of conch fishing, witness skilled divers harvest these delicious mollusks, and savor a fresh conch salad prepared right on board. It's a taste of the islands' culinary heritage and a glimpse into their traditional way of life.
Landlubber Adventures: Not everyone loves the open water. For those who prefer terra firma, a hike through the dramatic cliffs and hidden trails of Providenciales offers stunning views and a chance to connect with nature. Explore the deserted sands of Grand Turk's Governor's Beach or kayak through the serene mangroves of North Caicos.
Cultural Immersions and Island Flavors:
Step Back in Time: Travel through history at the ruins of Fort George on Grand Turk, a testament to the islands' colonial past. Learn about the indigenous Lucayan people at the Guana Island Museum or explore the vibrant local markets for handcrafted souvenirs. Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of the islands' heritage.
Indulge in Island Flavors: Tantalize your taste buds with fresh seafood, tropical fruits, and conch specialties served up at beachfront restaurants and local shacks. Don't miss out on trying the national dish, "conch fritters," a crispy and flavorful treat that will leave you wanting more.
Feel the Island Rhythms: Let loose and celebrate the islands' vibrant culture at a Junkanoo parade. Immerse yourself in the infectious energy of music, dancing, and colorful costumes. This is a chance to experience the true spirit of the Turks and Caicos people.
Planning Your Unforgettable Voyage:
Choose wisely: Opt for reputable tour operators with a good safety record and a commitment to responsible tourism practices.
Respect the environment: Be mindful of the delicate marine ecosystem and choose tours that minimize their impact on the islands.
Embrace the adventure: Pack your sense of wonder and a thirst for discovery. Be open to new experiences and let the magic of the islands unfold before you.
From snorkeling alongside gentle giants to island hopping and cultural immersions, a Turks and Caicos boat tours is more than just a trip; it's an experience that will stay with you long after you've returned to dry land. So, cast off the lines, set sail across the turquoise seas, and discover why the magic of Turks and Caicos truly lies beyond the beach.
