The Royal Shakespeare Company’s Matilda The Musical has announced its new adult cast with David Shannon playing Miss Trunchbull alongside Gina Beck as Miss Honey and Tom Edden and Marianne Benedict as Mr and Mrs Wormwood. The multi award-winning production is currently playing its sixth year in the West End and is booking until 27 May 2018.

The full adult cast includes Keisha Amponsa Banson, Richard Astbury, David Birch, Maria Graciano, Karina Hind, Peter Houston, Katie Lee, Vicki Lee Taylor, Kris Manuel, Bryan Mottram, Tom Muggeridge, Emma Robotham-Hunt, Simon Shorten, Biancha Szynal, Callum Train and Robert Tregoning. Gina Beck (Miss Honey) is renowned for leading roles in musical theatre. Previous roles have included Glinda in Wicked (Apollo Victoria Theatre & US Tour), Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera (Her Majesty’s Theatre), Magnolia Hawks in Daniel Evan’s production of Show Boat (New London Theatre) and Cosette in Les Misérables (Queen’s Theatre). A graduate of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, her other theatre credits include Far From the Madding Crowd (The Watermill Theatre) and The Belle’s Stratagem (Southwark Playhouse) both directed by Jessica Swale, I Love You You’re Perfect Now Change (Arts Theatre Upstairs), Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris (Charing Cross Theatre), The Sound of Music (Kuala Lumpur), Peter Pan (Birmingham Rep), The Kissing Dance (Jermyn Street Theatre) and Imagine This (Plymouth Theatre Royal). Her television credits include the BBC’s Doctors and Sherlock Holmes and The Case of the Silk Stocking. Opera credits include Madame Butterfly and L’elisir d’amore (Opera Holland Park). She was a soloist in the 21st and 25th anniversary celebrations of Les Misérables as well as in the recent blockbuster film version. She made her BBC Proms debut in 2016 as a soloist in the BBC’s Bernstein prom.

Marianne Benedict (Mrs Wormwood) has most recently appeared as Grizabella in Cats (UK Tour). Her other credits include Women On A Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown (Playhouse Theatre), The Wizard of Oz (London Palladium), Dirty Dancing (Aldwych Theatre), We Will Rock You (Dominion Theatre), Chicago (Oldham Coliseum), The Girl Dusty (Duchess Theatre), Crazy for You (Lincoln Theatre Royal and UK Tour), Return to the Forbidden Planet (Basingstoke Haymarket and UK Tour), The Blonde Bombshells of 1943 (Stoke New Vic & Oldham Coliseum), Loveshack (UK Tour), The Sunshine Boys (Oldham Coliseum), Debbie Does Dallas (Old Fire Station Theatre, Oxford) and The Country Wife (Watford Palace Theatre). Having studied at the Arts Educational School, she has also appeared in Eastenders.

Tom Edden (Mr Wormwood) is known for his work across stage, television and film. His theatre work includes Amadeus (National Theatre), One Man, Two Guvnors (National Theatre, Adelphi Theatre, UK Tour & Music Box Theatre, Broadway) for which he received Tony and Critic’s Circle nominations and won The Drama Desk Award for his role as Alfie, and Oliver! (Sheffield Crucible) for which he was nominated for a UK Theatre Award for his role as Fagin. Other notable credits include The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (Donmar Warehouse), Doctor Faustus (Duke of York’s Theatre), Peter Pan Goes Wrong (Apollo Theatre), Les Misérables (Queen’s Theatre) and Measure for Measure (Young Vic). David Shannon (Miss Trunchbull) is known for playing iconic stage roles in the West End and beyond. His extensive stage credits include The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera (Her Majesty’s Theatre), Chris in Miss Saigon (Theatre Royal, Drury Lane & UK Tour) and Jean Valjean in Les Misérables (Queen’s Theatre). Other credits include, The Beautiful Game (Cambridge Theatre), Romeo and Juliet, Threepenny Opera and Sweeney Todd (Gate Theatre, Dublin), Martin Guerre (Prince Edward Theatre), Cats (New London Theatre), Whistle Down the Wind (Aldwych Theatre), Jesus Christ Superstar (N.C.H Dublin) and Notre Dame de Paris (Dominion Theatre). Film credits include Noah, 5 to 7, Framed and La Visa Loca. David is also one half of Irish singing duo ‘Fir’, alongside Simon Morgan. He has also made regular appearances on the past three seasons of the History Channel’s Vikings.

Seen by over 7 million people across 60 cities and playing more than 5300 performances worldwide, Matilda The Musical is now preparing for its New Zealand premiere at The Civic in Auckland in August 2017 as well as the first UK and Ireland tour which will begin in March 2018, running alongside the continuing West End production. Winner of 86 major international awards, including 16 for Best Musical, the hit show is now the longest running production to play at the Cambridge Theatre.

Inspired by Roald Dahl’s beloved book, Matilda The Musical was commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and premiered at the RSC’s Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in November 2010, before transferring to London’s West End in October 2011, where it opened to rave reviews.

Having swept the board at the 2012 Olivier Awards, winning a record-breaking seven awards, the New York production of Matilda The Musical opened in April 2013 at Broadway’s Shubert Theatre and was celebrated on 10 “Top Ten” lists for 2013, including TIME Magazine’s #1 Show of the Year. The show also won four Tony Awards and a Tony Honor for Excellence in the Theater for the four girls sharing the title role on Broadway.

In July 2016, the Australian production broke further records by winning all 13 Helpmann Awards for which it was nominated. Having also won a Sydney Theatre Award for Best Musical in 2015, the Australian production has also played sold-out seasons in Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

Matilda The Musical is produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company with André Ptaszynski and Denise Wood as Executive Producers. The production was developed with the support of Jeanie O’Hare and the RSC Literary Department.

Matilda The Musical is written by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, and direction by Matthew Warchus. The production is designed by Rob Howell, with choreography by Peter Darling, orchestrations, additional music and musical supervision by Christopher Nightingale, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound by Simon Baker and the special effects and illusions are by Paul Kieve.

great, now i’m re-living the all-too-short glory that was Guvnor & Peter Edwards illustrating standard-gauge

... they didn’t do many, actually. majority of their books featured the Skarloey, Arlesdale, or Culdee Fell Railways. (and honestly a few of their Skarloey Railway illustrations leave me pretty cold.) 

but their standard-gauge stuff? brilliant... because it’s so different than what any other illustrator ever tried to do with these all-too-familiar characters and settings. 

impressionistic watercolors... not the “classic” look for the series but super cool

In a total power move, they rejected the old C. Reginald Dalby policy of “do as many pics as possible that avoid showing the engines’ faces because they’re too Difficult.” In fact, they completely reversed it, pointedly including a picture in their very first standard-gauge story where they showed basically nothing but engine faces. (Take That!)

Pffffttt. Funny... but, I admit, a bit lazy with those faces, don’t you think? (Unless James’s crew is twin brothers. Which... headcanon accepted, actually.)

They really loved depicting these crowded “chock-a-block” siding scenes? And I have no complaints.

Their talents equipped them well for LITERALLY WRECKING MY CHILDHOOD. (Ow.)

i meant to just check a quick detail about how the china clay trucks are illustrated and wound up wending through the delightful “Bill and Ben/Gallery” rabbithole

Guvnor and Peter Edwards were not fucking around when it came to illustrating the new baby twin characters with frighteningly realistic faces. WTH?! What even is that shading, and why did they use it so inconsistently??!! (The perspective is equally amazing and they use THAT trick a LOT because they ROCK. But I’m still gonna get real hung up about Bill’s face here.) 

Have all you current, prospective, and questioning Gordon/BoCo shippers who came out of the woodwork when I made my post about them seen THIS? 

... coz I admit... that is. like. a look of dawning love on Gordon’s face right there. wow. 

BWAHAHAHA. That time (I think this is in RWS *and* TTTE?) where Thomas was thrown off his own branch line for bridge repairs or something, and dear Edward’s like “yay! son, meet my other sons. i hope you all love each other like i love you <3” and Bill and Ben proceed to torment the hell out of Thomas?? Never Forget.

Appaarently there is an annual story called “On Your Guard” where their drivers (understandably, tbh) think Bill and Ben are just being idiots and dismiss them as the engines who cried wolf, but no, the twins were RIGHT, and they catch some thieves. I think? 

The wiki summary isn’t super clear, and I certainly don’t know what the thieves were after, but in this frankly unsettling illustration they seem to be re-evaluating ALL of their poor life decisions:

Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre has today announced that four cast members from the 2016 Olivier and Evening Standard Award-winning production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar will be reprising their performances this summer. The theatre has also added additional dates, with Jesus Christ Superstar now playing 11 August to 23 September 2017.

Ahead of his appearance at Magic at the Musicals at the Royal Albert Hall tonight (4 May, broadcast on Mellow Magic on Sunday 7 May), it is announced that Declan Bennett will return to the role of Jesus in the Open Air Theatre production. Also returning this summer are Tyrone Huntley with his award-winning performance as Judas, and David Thaxton and Peter Caulfield as Pilate and Herod.

Declan Bennett was the original lead in the London cast of Once (Phoenix), and has also appeared in Boy George’s musical Taboo (Venue Theatre), RENT (US tour and Broadway), American Idiot (Broadway) as well as on BBC’s EastEnders as Charlie Cotton. As a solo singer-songwriter, his album Record: BREAKUP was released as a live acoustic version in 2013. He achieved five UK Top 20 singles and a UK Top 20 album with Brit Award nominated band Point Break.

Tyrone Huntley won the Evening Standard Emerging Talent Award for his performance as Judas in 2016, as well as an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. He previously appeared in the Open Air Theatre production of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, Memphis (Shaftesbury), Hairspray (Curve), The Book of Mormon (Prince of Wales) and most recently as C.C.White in Dreamgirls (Savoy).

David Thaxton won the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for Passion (Donmar) and has appeared as both Enjolras and Javert in Les Misérables (Queens), Raoul in Love Never Dies (Adelphi), Maximillian in Candida (Menier) and Only The Brave (Wales Millennium Centre). He is a founder member of the band Divisions.

Peter Caulfield recently appeared in Doctor Who, and as Ariel in The Tempest (Southwark Playhouse). He has also appeared in One Man, Two Guvnors (National and Theatre Royal Haymarket), Into the Woods (Royal Opera House), Enron (Chichester and Noel Coward) and, on television, Cucumber (Channel 4) and Banana (E4).

With direction by Timothy Sheader, design by Tom Scutt, choreography by Drew McOnie, musical supervision by Tom Deering, lighting design by Lee Curran and sound design by Nick Lidster for Autograph, Jesus Christ Superstar was a sell-out in 2016, and went on to win the Evening Standard Award for Best Musical and the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival. It also received a further five Olivier Award nominations, for Best Theatre Choreography, Best Lighting, Best Sound, Outstanding Achievement in Music and Best Actor in a Musical (for Tyrone Huntley).

The production opens at the Lyric Opera of Chicago in April 2018.

The 2017 Open Air Theatre season opens with On The Town, (19 May – 01 Jul) directed and choreographed by Drew McOnie. The cast includes Danny Mac, Fred Haig, Samuel Edwards (replacing Jeremy Taylor who has withdrawn due to injury), Siena Kelly, Lizzy Connolly, Miriam-Teak Lee, Naoko Mori, Mark Heenehan, Rodney Earl Clarke and Maggie Steed.

The season continues with Dickens Uncovered, celebrating the greatest storyteller of London life, Charles Dickens: Artistic Director Timothy Sheader directs A Tale of Two Cities (7 July – 5 August), a new play by Matthew Dunster adapted from the original Dickens novel and, developing their programme of work made especially for families, Caroline Byrne directs Oliver Twist created for everyone aged six and over-adapted by Anya Reiss (17 July – 5 August).

Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre was voted London Theatre of the Year in the Stage Awards 2017, and recently announced a collaboration with English National Opera for their 2018 season, with Timothy Sheader directing Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw (22 – 30 Jun 2018).

Lenny Henry in The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui at The Donmar Warehouse

The Donmar Warehouse today announces full casting for Bruce Norris’ new translation of Bertolt Brecht’s satirical masterpiece The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, directed by Simon Evans with design by Peter McKintosh. As previously announced, Lenny Henry will make his Donmar debut as Arturo Ui, he is joined by Michael Pennington, who recently played the title role in King Lear at the Royal & Derngate Northampton, as Dogsborough. Other casting includes Philip Cumbus, Lucy Eaton, Tom Edden, Lucy Ellinson, Simon Holland Roberts, Louis Martin, Justine Mitchell, Gloria Obianyo, Guy Rhys and Giles Terera.

Chicago! A city of jazz and gangsters, prohibition and poverty. Amongst the murk of the Great Depression, there’s room for a small time crook like Arturo Ui to make a name for himself.

Ui and his henchmen just want to look after you, to offer protection for workers, for jobs, for businesses. Nothing to fear. But a little bribery here, some harmless corruption there, and soon something much more dangerous takes hold.

Brecht’s satirical masterpiece about the rise of a demagogue will be given a new translation by Pulitzer, Olivier and Tony Award-winning American playwright, Bruce Norris. Lenny Henry makes his Donmar debut as Arturo Ui. Making theatre accessible to as many people as possible remains at the heart of the Donmar’s mission. The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui has tickets available throughout the run via KLAXON TICKETS: a new allocation of tickets, starting from £10, being made available every Monday for performances two weeks later. Tickets will also be available across the auditorium at every price band.

The Donmar’s new YOUNG+FREE scheme, which provides free tickets to those aged 25 and under will also continue throughout the season, with releases for tickets on the last Friday of each month. YOUNG+FREE is made possible thanks to donations from Donmar audiences via PAY IT FORWARD. The Donmar has now received almost 2,750 donations alongside their partnership with Delta Airlines, which has enabled the venue to allocate almost 5,600 of these free tickets so far to those aged 25 and under.

Lenny Henry (Arturo Ui) makes his Donmar Warehouse debut in The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. He made his West End acting debut in the role of Othello in the Northern Broadsides production at the Trafalgar Studios. His portrayal won him critical acclaim and the London Evening Standard Theatre Award for Best Newcomer. Other theatre includes Fences (on tour and West End), Rudy’s Rare Records (Birmingham Rep and Hackney Empire) and The Comedy of Errors (National Theatre).

Lenny has been a comedian since the age of 16, finding fame as a comedy impressionist on 70’s TV talent show, New Faces. Other television work includes TISWAS, Three of a Kind, The Lenny Henry Show, Hope & Glory, Lenny Henry in Pieces, Chef! and the Saturday night BBC1 show, The Magicians. He has completed many sell-out live stand-up tours in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. On radio, Lenny worked for three years as a DJ on BBC Radio 1. Michael Pennington (Dogsborough) has previously appeared at the Donmar Warehouse in The Cosmonauts Last Message to the Woman He Loved. Michael’s most recent theatre credits include King Lear (UK Tour), She Stoops to Conquer (Theatre Royal Bath), A Winter’s Tale (Garrick Theatre), Richard II (RSC), Dances of Death (Gate Theatre), Judgement Day (The Print Room), Sweet William (Michael has also appeared in numerous productions at Chichester Festival Theatre, including Anthony and Cleopatra, The Syndicate, The Master Builder, Collaboration and Taking Sides). Guy Rhys (Givola) has previously appeared at the Donmar Warehouse in Artistic Director Josie Rourke’s production of Saint Joan. Most recent theatre appearances include Pomona originating at the Orange Tree Theatre, and subsequent National Theatre/Manchester Royal Exchange revival. Giles Terera (Roma) makes his Donmar Warehouse debut in The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui. Giles’ stage credits include Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Hamlet, Death and the King’s Horseman, The Hour We Knew Nothing of Each Other, Troilus and Cressida, Candide, Honk!, The Darker Face of the Earth, Mind the Gap and Walk in the Light (National Theatre), The Tempest (RSC). Other theatre credits include The Book of Mormon (Prince of Wales Theatre), Pure Imagination (St James’ Theatre), The Merchant of Venice (Globe Theatre, International Tour) King John (Globe Theatre & UK tour), Don’t You Leave Me Here (West Yorkshire Playhouse), Up on the Roof (Chichester Festival Theatre), Six Degrees of Separation (Sheffield Crucible) and Generations of the Dead (Young Vic). Giles has appeared on television in Horrible Histories and Doctors, and on film in The Current War, Muse of Fire and London Boulevard.
