CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS The inaugural InnoEX kicks off on April 12, 2023 in Hong Kong, where global tech achievements converge at three tech fairs, unlocking future trends and helaping enterprises stay ahead of the curve. CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS HONG KONG is definitely back in business, post-pandemic, as the first-ever InnoEX kicked off from April 12 to 15, with the prime objective of becoming the premier B2B platform for next-gen smart solutions, cutting-edge technologies and disruptive innovations.InnoEX was jointly organized by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC). The event ran in conjunction with the HKTDC Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring Edition) and HKTDC Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition), and all exhibitions were held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).The three tech fairs attracted nearly 3,000 exhibitors from 20 countries and regions across Hong Kong, mainland China, Asia, Europe and the Americas, and showcased Hong Kong's role as a global innovation hub and trade exhibition center. The four-day event also brought together influential tech experts, entrepreneurs, thought leaders and investors from the region to discuss collaborations, share upcoming trends and exchange insights into future opportunities."InnoEX serves as a premier business platform showcasing next-generation smart solutions, and cutting-edge technologies, bringing together influential tech experts, enterprises, thought leaders and investors from the region and beyond to discuss cross-region and cross-sector collaboration and explore business opportunities on all fronts," said Sophia Chong, HKTDC acting executive director, in her welcome remarks as she opened the first day of Innoex.Under the theme "Connecting the world with innovations for better living," the three tech exhibitions adopted the HKTDC's Exhibition+ integrated online and offline model for trade events. While physical expos themselves ran from April 12 to 15, global exhibitors, industry professionals and buyers could still come together through the Click2Match intelligent business matchmaking platform until April 22.According to its organizers, InnoEX is "devoted to promoting cross-industry as well as cross-functional collaboration and exchange, encompassing business-to-business (B2B), government-to-government (G2G), and government-to-business (G2B) partnerships." As the event is expected to drive "the translation of innovations into commercialization through the market, ultimately extending enterprises' reach to the global stage.""The current government is committed to promoting the development of innovation and technology to give a strong impetus to economic growth and address the concerns of people's livelihood. Last year, we published the 'Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Blueprint,' which sets out the strategic plan for innovation and technology in the next five to 10 years, and promotes key directions, such as digital economy and smart city development," said Professor Sun Dong, secretary for innovation, technology and industry."The 'Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Blueprint' has been making impressive strides in the smart city journey. Nonetheless, we will not be complacent in where we are. To lead by example, as announced in the chief executive's 2022 Policy Address, we are now forging ahead with an e-government audit with a view to implementing 100 digital initiatives by various departments leveraging advanced technologies such as AI, blockchain and big data analytics by 2025. They will certainly further enhance our livelihood with greater convenience and allow us to experience the benefits of smart city and innovation and technology (I&T) in our daily lives."Following the easing of the pandemic situation, Hong Kong has established closer trade ties with mainland China, resulting in 12 pavilions from 10 provinces and cities joining the InnoEx physical exhibition. The exhibition has also attracted leading innovation and technology institutions and organizations, including local universities and research centers, and major technology companies such as Huawei and Hikvision.Various local and overseas pavilions, including the B4B Challenge, Cyberport, Hong Kong Science and Technology Park, Smart City Consortium, So French So Innovative pavilion from France, and Canadian pavilion were all present at the exhibition halls. While representatives from the government, industry, academia and research communities from around the world joined the event to learn more about exhibitors' solutions and explore procurement opportunities.Several forums featured government officials from different mainland provinces and cities, with representatives promoting smart city development from various countries and regions, and executives from leading technology companies and unicorns, who gathered together to discuss a range of topical technology issues."Hong Kong is an important gathering place for global innovation elements and a key hub in the global innovation network," said Professor Zhang Guangjun, vice minister of Science and Technology, in a special address given online."With its advantage of the motherland's strong backing and world connection, Hong Kong plays an indispensable and important role in the country's innovation infrastructure. The Ministry of Science and Technology will work closely with the Hong Kong SAR Government to implement President Xi Jinping's series of important pledges on innovation and technology and the promotion of Hong Kong's prosperous development, and to put into practice the arrangement between the mainland and Hong Kong on expediting the development of Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology center, so as to promote innovation and technology as a new engine for Hong Kong's development." https://www.manilatimes.net/2023/04/16/business/sunday-business-it/innoex-unlocks-future-trends-in-hk/1887269

Electronic filing of PPH request commences at IPO, Indian patent office to be at par with UPSTO and more
Tumblr media
In this week’s Patent News – Electronic filing of PPH request commences on 5th December 2019, 70 requests already filed; Indian Government to establish IPO based on the model of USPTO; CII publishes unique report on using IP as collateral at the 5th edition of the annual IP Conference; Sisvel and Spotify enter into patent licensing agreement; InterDigital files patent infringement lawsuit against Huawei; Avanci signs patent licensing agreement with Volvo Cars; Hong Kong hosts 9th edition of Business of IP Asia Forum; GCC Patent Office launches new search platform for Patents and other news updates.
INDIA PATENT NEWS
Electronic filing of PPH request commences on 5th December 2019, 70 requests already filed.
On 4th December, the Indian Patent Office issued a notification indicating the commencement of the recently introduced Bilateral Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) pilot program between the Indian Patent Office (IPO) and the Japan Patent Office (JPO). According to the notification on ipIndia, the bilateral agreement will come into force from 5th December 2019 and will remain active for a period of three years. Applicants intending to utilize the new route may refer to the – ‘Procedure Guidelines for PPH’ when filing a request for the PPH pilot program. The Applicant must also submit all the prescribed information while electronically filing Form 5-1 under Chapter 5 of the said guidelines.
The notification also highlights the following points:
The number of the requests for the PPH in IPO will be limited to 100 cases per year on first come first serve basis.
An applicant who has filed a patent application, either alone or jointly with any other applicant, shall not file more than 10 PPH requests to IPO per year
Request under the PPH is required to be filed online in prescribed form 5-1 under chapter 5 of the PPH guidelines
An applicant/Authorized agent can file the request for expedited examination on Form 18A only after the request for assigning Special Status filed through the form prescribed in Chapter 5 is accepted by IPO.
In case of defects in Form 5-1 the applicant will be provided opportunity to rectify the defects within 30 days from the issue of notification of defects by IPO
Notwithstanding the above procedure, the timelines for filing a request for expedited examination shall be as prescribed under the Patents Rules, 2003.
You may click here to access the official notification and here to access the Procedure Guidelines.
Expedited Examination under PPH program – only 30 more requests allowed.
In less than a week since the launch of the PPH program between Japan and India, 70 requests for expedited examination have already been filed by various applicants and only 30 more requests may be filed until the end of this year. While the notification states that the number of requests under the PPH program will be limited to 100 cases per year on first come first serve basis, it is not clear if this cap would be increased in the calendar year 2020. The patent office had similarly capped the number of expedited examination requests to 1000 when it was introduced first by the Indian patent office in 2016.
CII publishes unique report on using IP as collateral at the 5th edition of the annual IP Conference
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) recently published a report on the advantages of using Intellectual Property as collateral for financing by drawing examples from all over the world. The report titled – “Creating IP-led technology for a $5 trillion economy,” was published at the 5th edition of the annual IP Conference, in New Delhi.
According to the CII website, the highlights of the report are as follows:
While the regulatory environment is evolving globally and initiatives to provide impetus to IP-backed financing are underway, some economies such as Singapore exhibit a sophisticated regulatory environment as well as a robust infrastructure for IP financing.
IP financing transactions where IP is used as a collateral, have declined over the past five years globally. However, transaction financing where acquired IP is the primary collateral, and monetizing IP under a distress situation have gained traction.
There is increasing interest from large, global PE funds in innovative, IP-based companies. These funds are not only investing in IP-based companies, but also providing finance to help protect IP in certain situations.
You may click here to access the official CII media release webpage for more information.
Indian Government to establish IPO based on the model of USPTO
While speaking during the Question Hour at the Rajya Sabha, last Friday, the Union Minister, Piyush Goyal said that the government is making efforts to set up an Intellectual Property Office that is completely computerized. In line with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the Indian government aims to establish an office where the activities of four different IP offices are combined into one. He said, “In the whole of U.S, there is one IPR Office and everybody works online, I am trying to develop that module here.” In addition to this, the Union Minister also spoke about the changes bought by the government to protect Traditional Knowledge, which would have otherwise been lost.

InterDigital files patent infringement lawsuit against Huawei
InterDigital, Inc. has instituted a lawsuit against Huawei for allegedly infringing its patent portfolio consisting of 3G, 4G and 5G standards-essential patents (SEPs). The lawsuit instituted in the U.K, seeks the determination of “fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms.” 18th months ago, Huawei’s SEP licensing agreement with InterDigital expired and since then the companies have been making efforts to negotiate the FRAND terms and conditions for a global licensing agreement. The current lawsuit has been filed by InterDigital in the High Court of Justice of England and Wales. InterDigital is also seeking a “FRAND injunction” which is similar to what was awarded previously by the High Court of Justice in Unwired Planet v. Huawei.

Smart Items in Focusing Hong Kong Lighting Fair
Tumblr media
Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the 11th HKTDC Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Spring Edition) (Spring Lighting Fair) opened today and continues through 9 April at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). More than 1,430 exhibitors from nine countries and regions are featured, with Japan taking part for the first time. The fair welcomes new pavilions from Guangdong, Ninghai (Ningbo) and the Dali Aluminum Products Pavilion, showcasing a variety of products and materials from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and other mainland provinces. Alibaba.com will also debut pavilions at the Spring Lighting Fair, with selected suppliers from its e-commerce platform going from online to offline to present their latest lighting products. To facilitate exchanges and business matching, the HKTDC has organised 62 buying missions comprising over 4,000 representatives from some 3,000 companies. These include Energy & Environment LLC from the United States, Pick n Pay from South Africa, Diefra Light from Germany, Tata Realty & Infrastructure from India, Joyful Honda from Japan, Robinsons Handyman from the Philippines, LEDIN from Poland, and Krislite from Singapore. New Innobuild zone to support smart living and green construction This year's fair sees the launch of the new Innobuild zone, which showcases innovative building technologies, practical building tools, smart and green building materials, and hardware. The zone highlights new technologies and construction methods that complement smart lighting systems for domestic and commercial purposes in response to the growing demand for smart living and environmentally friendly construction. Featured products include a vertical green wall from Canica Building Materials (booth no.: 1A-D01) that suits both indoor and outdoor settings. In addition to enlivening domestic and public areas with dense foliage or colourful flowers with matching lighting, the wall also serves to insulate sound and reduce air pollution. The Smart Lighting and Solutions zone returns this year in response to this hot industry trend, exhibiting the latest smart and remote-control lighting systems and products, as well as related solutions that incorporate the new smart technologies into lighting. Tuya Smart (booth 1C-E02) showcases its Internet of Things operating system (IoT OS)-level plug-and-play technology. This helps lighting enterprises to supercharge their development of smart lighting products. The Hall of Aurora continues to be the spotlight of the fair, showcasing an extensive range of innovative lighting products and technologies from more than 180 renowned brands, including MLS Co, Shenzhen MOSO Electronics Corp, SKY-LIGHTING and Mooni Ltd. Hong Kong-based Mooni (booth no.: 1E-D01) presents the Mooni Eclipse Speaker featuring smooth curves, a pine wood handle and a concave design that delivers powerful sound. The LEDs around the speaker can create a fire-ring effect. Local exhibitor A-Z Star Electrical (booth no.:1E-B18) presents a plug-in dimmer, which is remotely controllable with Alexa, meaning users can easily switch lights and appliances on and off anywhere, anytime with an app, even when on the go. Users can set schedules and timers and adjust the brightness of lights to suit different lighting needs at different times. Insights into smart lighting trends and industry developments Prompted by the Hong Kong government's push on smart city development, smart lighting and connected lighting systems were in focus at today's Asian Lighting Forum 2019, At which representatives from industry players and professional organisations such as OSRAM, Signify, Illumination Physics, Tridonic, TrendForce, LEDinside, Bluetooth SIG, And the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) discussed industry trends, the latest technologies and applications in smart lighting, and the market outlook. Reflecting the growing prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI) and the internet of things (IoT), a forum titled "Smart Lighting: IoT and Its Supply Chain" will be held tomorrow (7 April), with experts from Tuya, Alibaba AI Labs and JD Cloud sharing insights into the application of these technologies in smart lighting products. Despite various economic uncertainties including the China-United States trade dispute, some of Hong Kong's lighting export markets recorded satisfactory growth last year, with Mainland China up 8.5%, Japan rising 10.4% and the United Kingdom growing 8%.
