Ok but now that you have brought the camilla in uniform-ish outfit from ttc, as a military person yourself what is your standpoint about the royals who are not in the military but wear the uniform?
Masaa el kayhr it is 2130 in Bahrain and I have risen from the dead and chosen violence once again. *sips covfefe*
A list of modern (post-George VI) BRF members and their tenure of military service:
Queen Elizabeth II - Auxiliary Territorial Service, Subaltern -> Junior Commander, WWII Lord High Admiral BAMF, HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and Slayer of Nazis - Royal Navy, 1940 - 1953 although never formally discharged from service, Midshipman -> Commander (active duty), WWII King Charles III - Royal Navy, 1971 - 1976 Princess Anne - *crickets* Prince Andrew - Royal Navy, 1979 - 2001, Falklands War Prince Edward - Royal Marines, 1986 - 1987 Prince William - Royal Air Force, 2006 - 2013 Prince Harry - British Army Air Corps, 2005 - 2015, Afghanistan Now. Which one is the one, using the fandom's words, playing dress up every time they show up in a uniform? Why is it when the one without any tenure of military service is hyped up, encouraged, and idolized for doing so, whereas Ed is deemed a fake and relegated to cosplaying? You cannot have separate standards for this, otherwise it makes you look silly and, frankly, ignorant at best.
If we're going to constantly be triggered by uniform regulations and who does/does not "deserve" to wear them, then it should be applied across the board, which yes, includes Harry not shaving while in uniform. Personally, (USN, Electronics Technician 2nd Class, 2012 - , Operation Inherent Resolve) I'm Unbothered™. It's usually done for ceremonies where some royals hold honorary positions in the military. It is an honor that was granted them, ergo they have the right to wear it (hopefully correctly). It has zero effect on my life whatsoever, and I have more important things to stress about here in 5th Fleet where Iran is constantly fucking around and trying to find out. Y'all stay more pressed than my dress blues.

HRH The Princess Elizabeth. Her Royal Highness’s Merry Smile
Tumblr media
📷 HRH The Princess Elizabeth. Her Royal Highness’s Merry Smile, published by J. Beagles & Co, circa 1933 © National Portrait Gallery, London
From National Portrait Gallery Twitter Sept 16, 2022
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was born Princess Elizabeth of York on 21 April 1926 in London. As a young royal, countless images of the Queen were captured – from her first years to the earliest moments of her royal duties.
At the time of this portrait (c.1933), Elizabeth’s grandfather, George V, was king. Her own father, the future King George VI, would have been unaware of the dramatic changes to come – in 1936 Edward VIII abdicated, setting in motion a new line of succession.
Here we see a happy Princess of York, captured away from ceremonial life. Many of our works present the Queen in a formal manner, however this snapshot offers a fascinating insight into a more intimate moment – capturing the young princess's ‘merry smile’.

Henry ‘Chips’ Channon: The Diaries (Vol. 1), 1918-38, entry for 16th January 1923
Tuesday 16th January
I was so startled and almost fell out of bed, when I read in the Court Circular that their ‘Majesties are much pleased to announce the engagement of their second son Albert, Duke of York,¹ with The Lady Elizabeth Lyon’. I was left numb. We have all hoped and waited so long for this romance to prosper that we had begun to despair that she would ever accept him. He has been the most ardent of wooers and was apparently at St Paul’s Walden [Bury]² on Sunday, when he at last persuaded her. He motored at once to Sandringham and the announcement is the result; the royalties allowing her no time to change her mind. The Lyon family are rather taken by surprise as they had not expected the official announcement would appear so soon. He is the luckiest of men and not a man in England today does not envy HRH!! The clubs are in gloom; and already photographers display photographs of our future Princess for large crowds to gaze at. Bruton Street³ is impassable because of the people. Everybody is delighted and I have written to console poor Gage.
1.  Prince Albert Frederick Arthur George (1895–1952), second son of King George V and Queen Mary, was created Duke of York in 1920. He served in the Royal Navy in the Great War and was mentioned in dispatches for his service in the Battle of Jutland. Following the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII, in 1936, he became King George VI of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and Emperor of India.

At 9th of June was 102 years since the birth of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh (born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark)
Philip Mountbatten; 10 June 1921– 9 April 2021 , was the husband of Queen Elizabeth II. As such, he was consort of the British monarch from Elizabeth's accession on 6 February 1952 until his death in 2021, making him the longest-serving royal consort in history.
Philip was born in Greece into the Greek and Danish royal families
Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark was born on the dining room table in Mon Repos, Royal family’s summer villa on the Greek island of Corfu, on 10 June 1921.He was the only son and fifth and final child of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg.A member of the House of Glücksburg, the ruling house of Denmark, he was a prince of both Greece and Denmark by virtue of his patrilineal descent from King George I of Greece and King Christian IX of Denmark; he was from birth in the line of succession to both thrones.Philip's four elder sisters were Margarita, Theodora, Cecilie, and Sophie. He was baptised in the Greek Orthodox rite at St. George's Church in the Old Fortress in Corfu. His godparents were his grandmother Queen Olga of Greece, his cousin Crown Prince George of Greece, his uncle Lord Louis Mountbatten, and the mayor of Corfu, Alexandros Kokotos.
His family was exiled from the country when he was eighteen months old. After being educated in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, he joined the Royal Navy in 1939, when he was 18 years old. In July 1939, he began corresponding with the 13-year-old Princess Elizabeth, the elder daughter and heir presumptive of King George VI. Philip had first met her in 1934. During the Second World War, he served with distinction in the British Mediterranean and Pacific fleets.
In the summer of 1946, the King granted Philip permission to marry Elizabeth. Before the official announcement of their engagement in July 1947, Philip stopped using his Greek and Danish royal titles and styles, became a naturalised British subject, and adopted his maternal grandparents' surname Mountbatten. He married Elizabeth on 20 November 1947. The day before their wedding, the King granted Philip the style His Royal Highness. On the day of their wedding, he was additionally created Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich.
Philip and Elizabeth were married in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey, recorded and broadcast by BBC radio to 200 million people around the world. In post-war Britain, it was unacceptable for any of the Duke of Edinburgh's German relations to be invited to the wedding, including Philip's three surviving sisters, all of whom had married German princes. After their marriage, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh took residence at Clarence House. Their first two children were born before Elizabeth succeeded her father as monarch in 1952: Prince Charles in 1948 and Princess Anne in 1950. Their marriage was the longest of any British monarch, lasting over 73 years until Philip died in 2021.
Philip left active military service when Elizabeth ascended the throne in 1952, having reached the rank of commander. In 1957, he was created a British prince. Philip had four children with Elizabeth: Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward.
A sports enthusiast, Philip helped develop the equestrian event of carriage driving. He was a patron, president, or member of over 780 organisations, including the World Wide Fund for Nature, and served as chairman of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, a youth awards program for people aged 14 to 24.Philip is the longest-lived male member of the British royal family. He retired from his royal duties on 2 August 2017, aged 96, having completed 22,219 solo engagements and 5,493 speeches from 1952.Philip died in 2021 at Windsor Castle, at the age of 99.

The city has created 450 new shelter beds, expanded its emergency housing capacity and earmarked $250 million for affordable housing, he added. The policy was supposed to be a temporary measure while the city worked to create more temporary housing and dovetailed with the city's declaration of a state of emergency for homelessness. The Willamette Week, the city's alternative weekly, sent a team of reporters to test the policy by pitching tents on the sidewalk in front of Hales' home and the homes of other elected officials. Neighborhood and business groups, including the Portland Business Alliance, sued. When Hales announced it in February, it drew immediate criticism. Portland's safe sleeping policy allowed homeless people to unroll a sleeping bag or unfurl a tarp between 9pm and 7am on city sidewalks and allowed camping in some specific areas of the city - but never in more than groups of six. His struggles mirror those in other West Coast cities, such as Seattle and San Francisco, where politicians have grappled to address a tide of homelessness. Hales has walked a fine line in trying to address a growing problem with homelessness in the Pacific Northwest city while appeasing homeowners and businesses. Portland Mayor Charlie Hales on Tuesday announced the end of pilot program that allowed homeless people to sleep on the streets undisturbed by law enforcement (November photo)

Queen Elizabeth II death: Who is in the Queen's family tree?
Tumblr media
The House of Windsor, as we understand it nowadays, started in 1917 whilst its own circle of relatives modified its call from the German "Saxe-Coburg-Gotha." Queen Elizabeth's grandfather, King George V, became the primary Windsor monarch. Meanwhile, it is essential; that the royals we see today are the descendants of King George and Queen Mary.
Queen Elizabeth's grandmother Queen Mary turned into a royal through birth; her great-grandfather turned into King George III. Edward, the eldest son of George V and Queen Mary, became King after her father's loss of life in 1936 which threw the country into crisis months later when he proposed to Wallis Simpson, an American divorced socialite.
There was no split between church and state at that time. As a result, Edward was the head of the Church of England, which at the time, divorced people were not allowed to remarry, and thus his marriage was opposed.
After only one year on the throne, Edward III voluntarily abdicated the throne addressing the nation on the radio with these words; "I have found it impossible to carry on the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge the duties of the king, as I would wish to do, without the help and support of the woman I love."
His more youthful brother, the duke of York, was proclaimed King George VI on December 12.
The Queen became the 6th lady to ascend the British throne in February 1952, after his father, King George IV, passed away. She served the British monarchy for over 70 years.
Following Queen Elizabeth II death at 96, her eldest son immediately ascends the throne as the King of the British monarchy, putting his eldest son, Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, first in line to the throne.
Regarding marital relationships, Queen Elizabeth married her third cousin, Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in November 1947, who both were Queen Victoria's great-great-grandchild.
Queen Elizabeth had only sibling sister, Princess Margret, Countess of Snowdown, who died in 2002.
Among her children, Prince Charles was the prospective heir to the throne at the age of three and married Princess Diana from 1981 to 1996, with whom they had two children; Prince William and Harry.
Princess Diana's death was caused by a car crash in France's Capital, Paris, along with the Egyptian film producer Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul.
Prince William, Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge, heir apparent to the British throne, married Catherine Elizabeth Middleton in 2011 at West minster Abbey. The couples have three children together; Prince George, 9; Princess Charlotte, 7; Prince Louis, 4.
Prince Harry, real name (Henry Albert David), was born September 15, 1984, a member of the British royal family and fifth to the line of successors to the British throne. He underwent Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
Prince Harry married Meghan Markle in 2018 at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.
Under the protocols started by King George V in 1917, the youngsters and grandchildren of a sovereign have to be automatically called Her Royal Highness or His Royal Highness (HRH) and prince or princess.
According to the British media reports, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, is now technically a prince following the demise of the Queen- a name which Meghan controversially claimed became formerly denied to him due to the race he belongs to.
His more youthful sister, Lilibet` Lili' Mountbatten-Windsor, is likewise entitled to be a princess following the demise of the Queen and, together with her grandfather, the Prince of Wales, turning into King.
Other close relative includes Prince Andrew, Duke of York, 62, the third of the Queen's four children and nine to the throne. He served in the British Royal Navy for 22 years, and during the Falklands War, he served as a helicopter pilot.
Princess Beatrice, 10th in the line of succession to the British throne, married real estate developer Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi in a non-public rite in July 2020.
Princess Eugenie, the younger York sister as described royally, is the 12th in the line of succession after her cousin Prince Harry.
The Queen's next of Kin also consists of Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, Prince Eugenie, Lady Louise Windsor, and Anne, Princess Royal, among many other ascendants and descendants.

HRH THE PRINCE PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH (June 10th 1921 - April 9th 2021)
Born Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark, Philip was the youngest son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice – a great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria. After the Greco-Turkish war, his family was exiled and Philip was carried to safety in a fruit box, before settling in France. Philip has stated he thinks of himself as Danish, although he has lived in England for most of his life.
At the age of six, he travelled to England to live with his maternal grandmother, Victoria Mountbatten. His mother was committed to an asylum, his father moved to Monte Carlo, and his sisters married German Noblemen. During Hitler’s rise to power, several of these noblemen became entwined with the Nazi party. While Philip was attending Gordonstoun, in Scotland, he attended a Nazi funeral after the death of his sister.
Philip joined the Royal Navy in 1939 and served during the Second World War. He received a number of military awards during the war and became one of the young first lieutenants in the Royal Navy. While at the Royal Naval College, Philip was introduced to his distant relatives, King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, and their two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. After this meeting, Elizabeth began to send letters to Philip regularly and, in 1946, they became engaged. In 1947, in preparation for the official announcement, Philip discarded his titles and became Philip Mountbatten, a British subject.
The day before his wedding, Philip, became a His Royal Highness and was made the Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich of Greenwich. He married Elizabeth in a televised wedding at Westminster Abbey, attended by none of his family. In the following years, they had two children: Charles and Anne. Until the death of George VI, Philip remained at work with the Navy, predominantly stationed in Malta.
In 1957, Elizabeth granted Philip the title of Prince of the United Kingdom, making him HRH Prince Philip. The couple later had two more children: Andrew and Edward. During the following years, Philip became patron of over 800 organisations and regularly toured countries alongside his wife and, later, children. Philip is a keen sportsman, and has enjoyed polo, carriage driving, yachtsman, and flying. He also loves painting.
Known for being down-to-earth, and having made plenty of rude and often racist remarks, Philip is a divisive figure. Despite this, he is beloved by his grandchildren and appears to be close to his great-grandchildren. After the dawn of the 21st Century, he began to suffer from ill health and had to miss a number of pivotal moments. He is the longest serving consort of all time and half of the only British reigning couple to celebrate a 70th Wedding Anniversary. In 2017, Philip retired from royal duties. He still accompanied the Queen on various engagements and was seen at family moments, including weddings, christenings, and Christmas.

Wait how is it that the men never become royal?
If they married a royal woman, for instance say William was actually a woman & 2nd in line to the throne, when married, wouldnt her husband become a royal duke? Or am I missing something?
So! We can actually use the example of The Queen and Philip - in order to get engaged, Philip had to renounce all of his Greek/Danish titles. So for a few months (from February to November) he was just Philip Mountbatten - no HRH, no prince, nada. Then, the day before the wedding The King issued a Letters Patent making him a British Prince, so he became Lieutenant HRH Sir Philip Mountbatten (still not a Prince though). On the day of the wedding another LP was issued making him The Duke of Edinburgh, so he became HRH The Duke of Edinburgh ... and then 10 years later The Queen issued a Letters Patent making him a British prince and he became HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
It's a bit confusing with Philip - and not a 100% accurate response to the question you asked - because he was BORN a Prince. So the media had always referred to him as Prince Philip even after he renounced his titles/styles and wasn't royal at all (Feb-November 1947) and then for the 10 years after when he was an HRH but not a prince.
But let's say that William was female (Wilhelmina) and married a man named Carl, lol. Wilhelmina - being a female royal and 2nd in line to the throne would already be HRH Princess Wilhelmina of Wales. Carl, however, would just be plain ol' Carl. It would be the prerogative of the monarch at the time to offer a duchy or earldom making Carl "The Duke of X" -- and it would also be the monarch's prerogative to issue an HRH. NOW! Since any children of Wilhelmina and Carl would be in line to the throne, and one of them would be the future monarch AND since HRH's only pass through *the male line* (ie: Carl's line) it is very likely that in order for the future monarch to be born an HRH Carl *would* be offered (and likely obligated to accept) an HRH and duchy. Otherwise the future monarch and their siblings would just be George, Charlotte, and Louis rather than HRH Prince George, HRH Princess Charlotte, and HRH Prince Louis.
And in explaining this, I've now just run into a confusing point for myself that maybe someone can clear up. It's quite obvious that King George VI made Philip HRH The Duke of Edinburgh so that the consort of the future monarch would be a royal duke AND so that the children of said future monarch - including another future monarch - would be born HRH. BUT Philip wasn't Prince Philip when Charles was born - he was just HRH Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. And it titles/styles pass through the male line, doesn't that mean that the princely title shouldn't have passed, only the HRH? Or was there a stipulation in the Letters Patent 1947 (I tried a quick search but got lazy) saying that children of Elizabeth and Philip would be styled HRH Prince/ss from birth?

He was a servicemen at heart, he was good at it and he enjoyed it. There was no ego in the man. I think the Navy provided him with an anchor for life. He was always very proud in the uniform and his sense of duty and correctness dovetailed quite well when he married the princess.
- First Sea Lord Sir Jonathon Band, Royal Navy
Many military veterans and observers have privately said that the late Duke of Edinburgh could have become the First Sea Lord had he not married Princess Elizabeth, who assumed the throne following the death of her father, King George VI.
At the onset of World War Two, Philip started at the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth, where he would go on to be named “best cadet” and eventually took command of a frigate, HMS Magpie.
Tumblr media
With Britain at war in 1940, Philip joined the Royal Navy, serving as a midshipman on HMS Ramillies, and was posted to the Indian Ocean.
The Duke of Edinburgh was mentioned in despatches for his service during the Second World War. He was a midshipman aboard HMS Valiant off the southern coast of Greece when he earned his honourable citation.
A young naval officer, he was praised for his actions in the decisive Battle of Cape Matapan against the Italian fleet in March 1941.
Philip had been in control of the searchlights as the ship battled an Italian cruiser when he spotted an unexpected second enemy vessel nearby. He survived unscathed amid his shattered lights as an enemy cannon shell ripped into his position. His commanding officer said: "Thanks to his alertness and appreciation of the situation, we were able to sink in five minutes two 8in gun Italian cruisers."
Shortly afterwards, he was awarded the Greek War Cross of Valour. The duke later spoke of how he coped when his shipmates died or were wounded. "It was part of the fortunes of war," he said. "We didn't have counsellors rushing around every time somebody let off a gun, you know asking 'Are you all right – are you sure you don't have a ghastly problem?' You just got on with it."
Tumblr media
At the age of 21, Philip was one of the youngest officers in the Royal Navy to be made First Lieutenant and second-in-command of a ship – the destroyer escort HMS Wallace of the Rosyth Escort Force.
In July 1943, Wallace was dispatched to the Mediterranean and provided cover for the Canadian beachhead of the Allied landings in Sicily. The ship came under repeated attack in the dead of night, off the coast of Sicily.
With quick-thinking, Philip threw a wooden raft with smoke floats over-board, giving the impression of burning debris which was enough to throw the Luftwaffe plane off target.
Hundreds of lives, including Philip's, were probably saved by this act. One of his colleagues, onboard HMS Wallace that night, was Harry Hargreaves, "Prince Philip saved our lives that night," he told The Observer newspaper in 2003, “I suppose there might have been a few survivors, but certainly the ship would have been sunk. He was always very courageous and resourceful and thought very quickly."You would say to yourself, 'What the hell are we going to do now?' and Philip would come up with something.”
Tumblr media
Philip also served as First Lieutenant on the destroyer HMS Whelp in the Pacific, where he helped to rescue two airmen in 1945.
The men's Avenger bomber crashed into the ocean during the Allies' Operation Meridian II against the Japanese. The duke, who was 23 at the time, sent the battleship to the spot where the plane had gone down. The bomber had flooded and rough seas were preventing the men from getting into their dinghy.
Philip, who first spoke publicly about the incident in 2006 for a BBC Radio 4 documentary, remarked in a typically matter-of-fact manner: "It was routine. If you found somebody in the sea, you go and pick them up. End of story, so to speak."
He alerted the sick bay, arranged for hot food to be waiting for them and found new uniforms for the airmen. The men had no idea who their rescuer actually was until they were told he kept a picture of Princess Elizabeth in his cabin.
Tumblr media
The royal wedding took place just two years later.
Philip was reunited years later with one of the airmen – former Petty Officer (Airman) Norman Richardson – at the Royal British Legion's Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey in 2013.
Mr Richardson, of Weybridge, Surrey, said at the time: "We had a joke about Prince Philip giving me a set of his clothes when I was picked up off the coast of Sumatra. The duke still remembers it, and I told him they weren't really his clothes, they were the property of the purser's store."
Tumblr media
The duke was on HMS Whelp on September 2 1945 in Tokyo Bay when the Japanese surrendered. He recalled the horrors of seeing former prisoners of war returning from the camps. "It was an emotional experience. These people were naval officers who hadn't been in a naval atmosphere for three or four years, sometimes longer," he told a BBC documentary in 1995. "When we sat down in the mess they were suddenly in an atmosphere that they recognised. They sat there with tears running down their cheeks. They just couldn't speak."
Tumblr media
For seasoned veterans, there was little doubt Philip had had the potential to rise to the very top of the Royal Navy. The late Terry Lewin, who served alongside Philip when both were junior officers, went on to become First Sea Lord. And it was once suggested to him had the duke remained in the navy, they might have been competing for the top job, "I don't think the competition would have been very strong," Lord Lewin later told the BBC, "He would have walked it."
Yet as an officer, Philip never achieved the level of affection Lord Mountbatten managed. He was notoriously not one to suffer fools gladly. And one junior sailor on HMS Magpie said he never wanted to serve under him again. But Philip is also remembered as an immensely capable officer who drove himself as hard as his men and remained cool in moments of crisis.
Tumblr media
Although the duke's royal duties became his first priority, he maintained his interest in the Royal Navy - and used his position to support the preservation of Britain's maritime heritage.
In 2011, the Queen appointed him lord high admiral, a post that has existed since the 14th Century.
The duke maintained his love of ships and the sea, which remained a constant source of fascination to him. "The environment is completely different to anything you'll find on land," he once said, "You're at sea and exposed to the elements in a way you never are ashore. At sea you're in a cockleshell in this enormous expanse of the ocean. So that tends to cut you down in size a bit."
RIP HRH Prince Philip.

ELIZABETH of GLAMIS
By Roddy Martine | Published 20 August 2021
On an overnight visit to Glamis Castle in the early 19th century, Sir Walter Scott wrote, “I began to consider myself as too far from the living and somewhat too near the dead.”
No such thoughts troubled the future bride of King George VI, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, for whom Glamis Castle with its bulky towers and turrets was her much beloved family home. In common with other scions of the old Scottish aristocracy, her parents also owned properties in England, notably in London and at St Paul’s Walden Bury in Hertfordshire, but it was amid the straths of the Angus countryside that the young Lady Elizabeth spent her happiest formative years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While attending a charity garden party in the grounds at Glamis, an old woman informed her that when she grew up, she would become Queen of England. “In that case,” said the seven-year-old Elizabeth to her governess, “The laws of England will have to be changed!”.
When war was declared against Germany on 4 August 1914, coincidentally the day of Elizabeth’s 14th birthday, the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne decided to relocate his Countess and 10 children more permanently to Scotland. Soon after their arrival, Glamis Castle, in common with other great UK country houses, was requisitioned as a convalescent hospital for wounded soldiers.
Tumblr media
The family nevertheless remained in their private quarters but soon after, a serious fire broke out. On seeing the smoke, it was the 16-year-old Elizabeth who raised the alarm and who is largely credited with securing the rescue of the castle’s contents.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Those were difficult times for the close-knit Bowes-Lyon family. Four brothers enlisted in the army and Elizabeth’s eldest brother Fergus, an officer in the Black Watch, was killed at the Battle of Loos in 1915. Another brother, Michael, was reported missing, but later discovered to have been a prisoner-of-war.
However, amid the green rolling countryside and big skies of Scotland’s northeast coast, the troubles of the world were kept at a distance. Aside from volunteering as a nurse, Elizabeth was able to enjoy all of her favourite country pursuits, such as riding and fishing for trout and salmon, at which she excelled. The Italian Garden, with its raised terrace set between two small gazebos to the east of the castle, was laid out by her mother, Countess Cecilia, to designs by Arthur Castings. It was from this example that her daughter inherited a love of plants, which in later life she introduced at Clarence House, Birkhall and Castle of Mey.
And it was in Scotland that the young Elizabeth socialised with nearby landed families, notably the children of King George V when on holiday at Balmoral. In 1922, she was a bridesmaid at the wedding of Princess Mary.
Following their wedding in 1923, she and the then Duke of York chose Glamis Castle as one of their honeymoon locations, and it was here that their second daughter, HRH The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon was born in 1930, becoming the first royal baby in direct line to the throne of the United Kingdom to be born in Scotland for 300 years.
Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother clearly loved Glamis and at an official ceremony in 2008, her grandson, the Duke of Rothesay, officially named the specially designed wrought-iron entrance gates to the one-mile front drive, The Queen Mother Memorial Gates.
Show me a Scot who does not revere his or her ancestral roots. Descent from the royal line of Stewart was important to Elizabeth of Glamis, and throughout her long life she retained a deep emotional attachment to the land of her ancestors. Once, when approached at a reception by a South African who informed her that he detested the English, she replied. “Oh, I do so understand. You see I am Scottish.”
Tumblr media
Long before it became a hunting lodge, Glamis had been a religious retreat for the Irish Christian missionary Saint Fergus. One thousand years ago it was among the territorial titles held by the much-maligned Macbeth, Mormaer of Moray, and she was well aware of that.
The de Lyons family from Upper Normandy, were originally followers of William the Conqueror when he invaded England in 1066. In a future generation, family members arrived in Scotland where they were given Charters of Land at Forteviot and Forgandenny in Perthshire. Succeeding generations prospered and in 1376, Glamis was a gift from King Robert II to Sir John Lyon of Forteviot, Lord Chancellor of Scotland, when he married the King’s daughter Princess Joanna.
Another royal connection followed when Sir John’s son married his cousin Lady Elizabeth Graham, a great granddaughter of King Robert.
Politics and power dominated medieval Scotland and in the 16th century, out of jealousy directed at the powerful Douglas family, King James V accused Janet Douglas, wife of the 6th Lord Glamis, of witchcraft. The estate of Glamis was confiscated by the Crown and the unfortunate Lady Glamis was burned at the stake on Castle Hill in Edinburgh in 1537. The King even took up residence in the castle until his death in 1542, after which the vandalised property was handed back to the family.
Such incidents linger long in the Scottish psyche, and it says a lot for the 7th Lord Glamis that he was prepared to serve under the regents Morton and Lennox, and, like his ancestor, he too became Lord Chancellor of Scotland. He even invited Mary, Queen of Scots to stay at Glamis in August 1562.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In 1603, the 9th Lord Glamis, Captain of the Royal Guard to James VI, accompanied the King to London when James became King of England, and was created Earl of Kinghorne in 1606. His son unfortunately backed the wrong side during the religious wars and Glamis was occupied by Cromwell’s soldiers in 1650.
With debts of £40,000, the 3rd Earl of Kinghorne restored the situation and created the West Wing (to his own design) and turned the old hall into a spectacular vaulted Drawing Room. In 1677, he acquired a new patent for his peerage which enabled him to style himself Earl of Strathmore & Kinghorne.
The 4th Earl had seven sons. Four predeceased him and the surviving four brothers were each to succeed in turn. The 5th Earl supported the Jacobite Cause and was killed at the Battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715; Charles, 6th Earl entertained the exiled Old Pretender and was subsequently killed in a local skirmish in Forfar.
Then came financial salvation in 1767 when the 9th Earl married the 18-year-old Mary Eleanor Bowes, heiress to a substantial coal fortune in County Durham. To acknowledge this union, their son, the 10th Earl, hyphenated the Bowes surname with that of Lyon and quartered the family arms.
A five-acre walled garden was created in 1866 to provide vegetables, fruit and flowers. The servants’ quarters beyond the east wing were refaced and a Dutch garden created in front of the castle. Further interior improvements were introduced by Mary, wife of the 17th Earl, when her husband inherited the estate from his cousin in 1972.
A remarkable lady, her sense of style became apparent throughout. She confesses that when first married, the castle did not charm her at all, but afterwards her attitude completely changed and the Glamis which passed on to her son remains the much-loved family home it is today.
Simon, 19th Earl, inherited the estate and titles from his father in 2016. By then, the castle’s popularity as a visitor destination and working estate was well established. There are 4,000 acres of arable and commercial cattle farming, and 100 domestic houses let out to residential tenants. The castle annually hosts exhibitions, large-scale events, concerts and theatrical performances.
The gardens are beautifully maintained and include ‘The Macbeth Trail’, which sets out to explain the links with William Shakespeare’s iconic Scottish play of which there are several. Glamis had been one of the territorial titles held by the much-maligned Macbeth, Mormaer of Moray, while the battle of succession of Malcolm II’s three daughters after the king died at Glamis, was the inspiration behind the interplay of William Shakespeare’s highly partisan Scottish play, written in the 16th century.
