The Critical Role of Tutoring in Chinese Language Acquisition
With over 1.3 billion native speakers, Mandarin Chinese is one of the most widely spoken languages globally (Ethnologue, 2019). As China’s economic and political influence grows, learning Chinese as a foreign language has become increasingly popular worldwide. However, mastering Chinese presents unique challenges for non-native learners due to its logographic writing system, complex tones, lack of cognates, and cultural differences (Xiao, 2006). Extensive research indicates that individualized tutoring significantly enhances outcomes in Chinese language education.
Several studies on US college students found that one-on-one tutoring produced substantial gains in Chinese language proficiency compared to traditional classroom instruction alone (Chen, 2011; Luo, 2013). Students who attended weekly tutoring sessions over one academic year demonstrated greater improvement in reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Researchers posited that the highly contextualized feedback and scaffolding provided by tutors accounted for the enhanced performance.
Similarly, a Singapore study of secondary school students showed that struggling Chinese language learners substantially improved their exam scores after receiving supplementary small group tutoring (Wong, 2017). The personalized attention facilitated remediation of gaps in knowledge.
Beyond academic settings, tutoring also plays an important cultural role in Chinese language education. Native speaker tutors socialize learners into traditions and customs through contextualized instruction. They model authentic dialogue, providing vital exposure to colloquial vocabulary and usage often absent in classroom materials (Wang, 2009). This immersion builds learners' sociolinguistic competence.
In summary, research highlights the unique benefits of individualized tutoring, particularly for a complex language like Chinese. The tailored guidance, scaffolding, and cultural immersion enhances proficiency outcomes beyond conventional teaching methods alone. With a specialized tutor, a motivated student can make remarkable progress in comprehending and using this fascinating language.

How many hanzi do I know now? Hanzishan puts me at 2500 hanzi! http://hanzishan.com/
And hsklevel puts me at the following:

So basically somewhere in B2/HSK 6, I'd be broader and say B1-B2 or HSK 5-6 since I have plenty of gaps, and my communication skills are definitely only lower intermediate at best (they may be considerably worse lol). The hsklevel test also agrees with around 2500 hanzi as the amount I know generally both the pronunciation and meaning. A bit more if it's just meaning (around 3000) which may help explain reading skill improvements, and my listening comprehension being a degree below my reading skills.
In reality these tests are not perfect, but I wanted a recorded result so if I check this again in several months I can see if it went up. I know back in September or August 2022 I did these tests and it put me around 2100 I think? And I agree with the new results that my hanzi knowledge has increased by a significant amount. It's especially noticeable in pronunciations: I can read a lot of stuff out loud to myself than I could before.

To be a clumsy bird
Maybe you are surprised when you see the title. To be a clumsy bird doesn’t means when you do self introduction in Chinese ,you say “我是一只笨鸟(wǒ shì yì zhī bèn niǎo). “Clumsy birds have to start flying early” is used to describe someone who compensates for his/her weaknesses by working hard. The character “笨 (bèn)” means clumsy. “鸟 (niǎo)” refers to bird; “先 (xiān)” means first and “飞 (fēi)” means to fly. Example: Wǒ xiāngxìn tōngguò nǔlì wǒ huì dádào 我 相信 通过 努力 我 会 达到 mùbiāo de, bènniǎoxiānfēi ma! 目标 的, 笨鸟先飞 嘛! Indeed, everyone should learn to be a clumsy bird. Just like Chinese learning , we should make use of every resource to learn Chinese, every idiom, every song, every ancient Chinese poem… These resource can be found through e Chinese channel. Generally, what you learned through e Chinese channel can be examined by HSK test. Thus you can clearly know what you mastered and what you need to revise. If you want to take HSK test or learn Chinese through e Chinese channel, you can go to the website: http://www.echineselearning.com.

New HSK 3.0 standard was released last year! Old HSK 2.0 test has 6 levels (1~6), but new HSK 3.0 test has 9 levels (1~9).Also, the vocabulary in each level changed greately. I recommend this New HSK Test Vocabulary 1-9 app. At the present, this is the only app on Google Play that covers the vocabulary of 1~9 level (11,500+ words). https://howchinese.com/hsk-app

Last year, we released “HSK Test 3.0 Vocabulary 1-9” to help Chinese learners prepare for the New HSK 3.0 test. Recently, we released another app “Learn Chinese Slang” to help Chinese learners master the popular slang words and phrases used among Chinese young people. These slang words are not covered in the textbooks but frequently used in daily life especially on Internet. So it’s highly recommended to learn the most popular Chinese slang words.
